New Air, Time Machine install, Access Rights

I just bought a new MacBook Air and to move all my files from my old MacBook Air, I did a restore from Time Machine. Now there are many files that I directories I cannot put files in unless I sign in using my Admin password? What happened? Also, sometimes when I want to rename an ordinary data file I get a message saying, "You do not have sufficient access privileges to rename the item "filename". Any idea what's going on and how I can resolve it?
I did a search on the forum and found advice to run the command "man chown" but no explanation as to what it does.
Any help would be appreciated!

Launch the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run:
sudo chown -R $UID ~
Provide your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed.

  • Bought new Air, Time Machine Restore not working

Bought a new air, have my previous Air backed up on a time capsule, which I want to transfer to the new Air. When I Cmd+R the new Air on startup, I go through the normal procedure to transfer the time machine image from the old Air to the new Air. I do -
    1. Restore From Time Machine Backup
    2. Select Backup Source - my original Air image
    3. Put in my password, it's accepted, I can see my previous Air image and the laptop name is correct.
    4. It says "Opening Time Machine Backup"
    5. I select the latest backup, which date/time is correct
I get "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac". Is the new Air incompatible? If so, arrrrgh!

  • Time Machine: Cannot access old backups after migrating to a new mac

    Hello,
I have bought a new Mac (With Snow Leopard installed on it). I have used it for about half an hour to have fun with it.
Then, I have decided to use Time Machine & Migration Assistant to restore all my files from my old Mac (Leopard). The restoration was successful and I was very happy to see that all my files and settings were there.
However, when I try to access my old backups (the ones I have done prior to buying the new Mac), Time Machine says I do not have the permissions to access it.
Is there an way to fix this? I would like to be able to access these old files.

I am having a similar problem and do not understand the solution. I have a new Macbook and transferred my data from my Powerbook G4. However, I cannot access anything! There is a no entry sign on the folders and if I click them I get this message: 'The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.'
Help - but please, in simple language
    Thanks

  • Time Machine and Accessing iPhoto library on an external HD

    Hi
I am new to Time Machine.  I didn't see a community for it, so I am posting here.
I have TIme Machine set to backup to an external HD (Clickfree).
When I check on the iphoto library stored on the HD for the TIme Machine, I am unable to open the library.
How do I confirm that my iphoto library is being properly backed up by time machine?
Will it not open because iphoto is not installed on the external HD with the Time Machine backup?
    Thanks
    A

Time Machine provides a "versioned backup" of your files. Yes, it does provide a backup through time of your photos. You can restore your photos through the Time Machine interface on your Mac.
Obviously, if the drive on your Mac dies, then, you won't be able to access your TM backup until you repair your Mac. Restoring from your TM backup could take hours.
It is recommended that in addition to TM you perform a bootable cloned backup of the HD in your Mac using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to an external drive. Booting up from your cloned drive gets your Mac up and running within minutes.

  • Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. Apps won't launch. Help?

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. I get an error when I try to launch a program on the new computer (150:30). After contacting live chat about the issue and providing all serial numbers etc. I was directed to a download. The download was a .dmg file that my computer did not recognize. It was suggested that I ask the experts on the forum how to resolve the issue. I have all the discs and serial numbers but the new macbook pro doesn't take discs (I guess they think all apps are downloadable now). Any ideas?

Hmm... I don't know why they sent you here... CS4 is not part of the Cloud
I have some download links for earlier versions of Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements, but not CS4 Web
My best idea is to take a LARGE USB memory stick to a friend with a DVD drive and copy your DVD over to the USB memory stick
Or, ask in the forum for your program(s) to find out if anyone has CS4 download links
If you start at the Forums Index https://forums.adobe.com/welcome

  • Migration to new 3TB Time Machine/Time Capsule?

From an earlier posting, I think A Silverstone asked for a step-by-step procedure.
I have a similar issue I would like a procedure(s) on.  Actually two identical issues.
    1. I wish to purchase Apples new 3TB tower Airport/Time Machine to replace a 1TB Airport extreme/Time Machine.  I want to migrate the old to the new using Apple processes/procedures without a lot of workaround.  How can this be done?  Does Apple have a procedure?
    2. I have a desktop with four drives (three 2TB & one 1TB) and wish at least two of them to be Time Machine capable, i.e., backup every hour like the Airport/Time Machine does.  Can this be done?  Does Apple have a procedure?
I want to migrate the old Time Capsule data to the new Time Capsule and to two HD's in the desktop.
The idea is to have backups for a Time Machine backup in the event of a power disruption or a hacker that might impact the tower Time Machine.  There are other reasons such as storage capacity using a daisy chain process.
One main problem is capturing the old "sparsebundle" in such a way to get it into the new unit and on to internal HD's.  How to do this is the question.

    1. Time Machine – Transfer Backup to a New Drive
Time Machine – Transfer Backup to a New Drive (2)
You can also use Disk Utility's Restore tab, which is often faster and less prone to errors. Note it will format the new drive.
    2. Yes. Go to System Preferences/Time Machine, select Add a drive and you can have 2. They will alternate with each new backup.

  • Can the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Hi, I am thinking about purchasing the time machine. Can the hard drive on the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

Do you realize that if you store some of your Mac's data (photos, music, etc.) ONLY  on the external Time Capsule, AND also  store your "Time Machine" app "system backups" on the Time Capsule, then if the Time Capsule hard drive ever fails you will have lost the " original" and the "backup" copies of all that data  (photos, music, etc.)?  They will be gone forever.  NOT recommended!

  • Macbook pro won't restart after time machine install on new hard drive

I installed a new 500 GB HD on my 13-inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro (since the original crashed).  I successfully connected to the Disk Utility via the internet connection and started recovery from a recent Time Machine backup....but, the computer will not restart.  It's been stuck in the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating status bar all night.  I shut it down and restarted, but it won't go past the grey screen state.  I can't find any answers on the Support Page.  Help. Any one else have this issue?  Should I have first installed the Lion OS X first and then restored from the Time Machine backup?
Also, wondering if all my programs (2011 ILife & IWork and Microsoft Office) will be reinstalled with the back up?  (I can't find my installation disks for ILife and IWork :-()

Time machine is easy to set up and theoreticaly recover from. There have been reports of problems when a different disk or computer is used.

For future reference you may wish to learn about and use cloning of the HDD. I use both CCC and SD to do this and consider it to be the most reliable way to back up and recover.

  • Please help.  New Mac Air & Time Machine problems.

Recently I replaced my wife's MacBook with a brand new MacBook Air. We used an iomega model RPHD-TG external HD for Time Machine with FireWire on the old laptop.
However, since the Air does not have FireWire I am using the USB cable that came with it. It works fine when the Air is awake.
The problem is that whenever we put it to sleep then wake it we get this message every time:
"The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off." Then it proceeds to "repair" it then mount it.
Now, there is no on/off switch on this drive nor do we unplug it. Any ideas?

Open Energy Saver preferences. Look at the checkbox labeled, "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible." If it is checked then uncheck the box. See if that helps.
If your Iomega came with software to configure the drive for spindown when not in use, then disable that option.

I need to access a website that uses Safari 5.0. I'm using 5.1 and OS10.6.8. I do not have Time Machine activated - so I cannot go back and reinstall Safari 5.0  that way. Any suggestions?

Safari 5.1.9 and Java 6 are the latest versions available for OS X 10.6.8. To upgrade any further you would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.4) through the Mac App Store.

  • Flash, Adobe Air, Time Machine, Safari not  working with Snow Leopard

Really need some help with this.
Did an archive and install of Leopard then installed Snow Leopard. No problems yet.
90% of Video sites would not work. Uninstalled and reinstalled Flash. Uninstalled ShockWave, could not reinstall with 10.6.1.
Attempt to install adobe air, received this message: "couldn't write the application to hard drive - please verify and try again." performed verify disk, disk permissions, repair permissions all ok.
Attempted to install Air again, same message.
Tried to use Time Machine to open Safari from a week ago, received message: I did not have permission.
Using Macbook Pro, 2g memory, 80g hd, with 42g free.
    Backed up on ext. HD,
Oh, one more, getting a lot of spinning wheels when using Safari that causes a lockup and hard re-start.
I have an expensive piece of software that uses adobe air and I create videos for my business and I'm not able to do so now.
Can anyone give me any ideas what I can do.
    Thanks,
    Z

After a couple of days of problems with Snow Leopard and flash, safari etc... I figured out the problem is with my account.
I created a new admin account and everything seems to be working. Well almost.
a couple of things I've noticed are right clicking on dock icons does nothing, no option to quit or keep in dock.
Apple Techs', had me change my account months ago to fix a problem with safari crashing. It didn't really work and more problems resulted.
*So now my big question is: How do I move need items over to the new account.* I don't want to move everything over as I might bring what caused the problem in the first place.
What I need are several apps,(like ilife, iwork, firefox, devonthink, 1password etc.) downloads, desktop, docs, files, and book marks.
*What is the best way for me to do this?* Is there anything I need to do re: Snow Leopard on the new account?
I feel like I have a new and functioning Mac again just around the corner.
    Looking for your help, thanks,
    Z

If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes <u>'''before'''</u> starting Safe Mode. • Time Machine install created HUGE Library Files

A quick summary -- I have an iMac which I recently updated with Time Machine on a new 750 GB Western eDrive. I've also bought a new MacBook. I was trying to share the data folders between the 2 computers and giving myself permissions on each computer. For some reason, I wound up not being able to reboot my MacBook. It would just hang. Since this was a new computer with basically nothing installed on it, I decided to reinstall Leopard. When going through the initial boot-up, Leopard gave me the option to import settings from another computer via Time Machine -- a simple way to share my iTunes Library, right? Well, I did this and the MacBook copied over all my iTunes and iPhoto Library and even my iMac computer name and password.
My new MacBook, with its 108 GB Mac Hardrive partition already has 51 GB used, leaving 57 GB available. The Library folder info indicates that this folder occupies 9 GB of space. My iMac Library folder is much smaller. *Why would this Library folder be so large and can things be deleted safely?* (why would it be larger than the Library folder on my iMac?) Is there a simple way to list the individual folder sizes?
BTW..... I"m a newbie and recent convert from Windows. I bought my iMac last August and my MacBook this March. Any suggestions on a good tutorial or text book on what all these Mac folders do? Thanks!

Well what happened was my laptop ran into 2 kernel panics within 2 days (I posted a question here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25605663#25605663). Which sent ME into a panic. I couldn't trust myself to go any further so I went to the Apple store who then helped did an erase/install for me because they suspect it could be a software issue (maybe it was missing codes or something) and suggested that it would be best for me to drag/drop restore my stuff manually. I'm not very keen on a full system restore either because I know there are some system files which I'd rather not have sticking around (like com.rims which are super stubborn to get rid of) and which could even have been the source of my trouble right now.
I was reading through every single page of Pondini's articles and I'm couldn't find anything which said I could just restore the apps in my apps folder without transferring anything else (ie. the library folder in the macintosh hd folder) since i'm assuming anything from the library folder of the user would be obsolete if I choose not to restore those files using setup assistant. But I'm more reluctant about not using setup assistant for restoring my apps because I don't know how bad it will turn out. Not to mention I won't know if they would restore system root files that should've been long gone since I uninstalled them.
