New AirPort Express, but only 1 device can be connected at a time

I recently switched out a Linksys router for an AirPort Express, and now I am only able to connect 1 of my devices (MacBook, iPad, iPod Touch, Tivo) to the internet at any given time. I'm not sure if this is an AirPort or ISP (Earthlink DSL) issue, but with the Linksys, I was always able to have multiple devices on my home network at once.
With each of my Apple devices, I have to open Safari and obtain a connection by entering my DSL password. Specifically, the Earthlink ASDL Modem page says, "The Internet connection is currently in use by another computer (lists the IP address). Enter your DSL Account logon password to switch the Internet connection to this computer."
After I do this, Earthlink gives me the option of 'Releasing the Connection' so other computers can access the internet without entering the logon password...whether I do or don't, it doesn't change the fact only 1 of my devices can be online at once.
Did I configure my AirPort incorrectly or is there a setting that I need to change to fix this issue? Thanks!

Welcome to the discussions, kaytoem!
This sounds like you may have the AirPort Express set up in "bridge mode", which would only allow one device to connect at time.
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connection Sharing setting
This should be set to Share a public IP address
Update to save any changes
Does that help?

  • New airport express has error, now network can't connect to internet to

Purchased new airport express to use solely for airplay, ran airport utility and there was an error. Now airport express is not recognized and wireless network (Fios router) has no internet connection.

It's optional, but in my opinion, it would still be a good idea to perform the complete network power cycle that I outlined above.  This will give the network a "fresh start" and minimize the chances of an error occurring during the setup of the Express.
Perform a Factory Default Reset as suggested by Tesserax above.
Temporarily, locate the Express in the same room or close proximity to the Actiontec modem/router and power it on for a few minutes. Do not connect an Ethernet cable to the Express, as it will be configured using wireless.
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station
Click on AirPort Express just below that listing
That will get the setup "wizard" running to take a minute to analyze the network and likely suggest that the Express be setup to extend the Actiontec network.
Technically, it cannot do this, but it should be able to join the Actiontec network for use with AirPlay if the security settings on the Actionec are compatible with the Express.
Enter a name that you want to call the Express and then click the Other Options button.
Select the Add to an existing network option, if not already selected, and click Next
Follow the prompts, making sure that the name of the network and password are entered correctly.
If the setup is successful, you will see a message of Setup Complete and the Express will display a green light. Click Done and move the Express to the desired location and power it back up again.  The Express needs to be located where it can receive a good quality signal from the modem/router wireless.

  • My wireless iBookG4 sees my new Airport Express, but my PowerMac G5 won't!

My wireless iBookG4 sees my new Airport Express, but my PowerMac G5 won't!
I find this really strange. I have a cable modem coming in. There is an Airport Express hooked up to it. I use this to allow free movement about the house for my iBook, bhile my PowerMac g5 stays wired via ethernet.
Now I have purchased a second Airport Express for the living room, hooked up to BOSE speakers. The iBook sees the new Airport Express and can brpadcast iTues to it, no problem. The problem IS, I can't get the PowerMac to see the new Airport Express AT ALL--- it only sees the original one (the one that has the ethernet connected to it) PLUS--- the new Airport Express LCD flashes amber, not green... what is going on???

The new Express is not really on your network but is able to communicate with the laptop using Bonjour. Here's Apple's explanation for the flashing amber:
Startup is complete, but AirPort Express didn't get an IP connection. Depending on your setup, it may mean AirPort Express is out of network range, unplugged from Ethernet, lacks a path to the Internet (or local router), or that there's an issue with your Internet service provider.
Does your PowerMac G5 have an Airport card? If it does then it isn't associated with the new Airport. Both should be listed under the Airport menu but only one has a checkmark. If it doesn't have a card it won't be able to see the new Airport until you configure the new Airport as an extension of the first wireless network, called WDS or Wireless Distribution System.

I can connect to internet with my MBP through Airport Extreme, but my iOS devices can't. Please help.

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

  • I can stream from ios to new airport express but not from windows 7 or powermac G5

I have new airport express and older apple tv on my network.  Both are connected and found by all devices - Windows 7 laptop, Powermac G5 and all ios devices.  I can stream music via airplay to both airport express and apple tv from ios devices (one at a time of course).  I can stream from itunes to Apple TV but cannot connect to the airport express!  It shows up and I get the dredded error: An error occured while trying to connect...
I tried some of the many ipv6 suggestions that I've seen here but nothing is working.
Anyone have the setup?  Is this an airport express setup issue?  Please help!!!

OK, I'm tipping my hat to Apple's (new) online experts. Great job.

  • New Airport Express: Stream from iOS5 devices to multiple AEs?

    Hi all,
is it possible to stream music from iOS5 devices (iPhone4/iPad3/Apple TV 3) to multiple (new) Airport Express devices?
    Thanks.

Streaming music to Airplay simultaneously on/with iTunes is 100% clear.
But as mentioned, at the German Apple website it's a bit vaguely described for the new Airports.
Since iOS5 I can stream music to my existing Airport Express (pre the new release) from my iPhone/iPad only to one Airport at the same time. Of course I can choose a single Airport one by one, but music plays only on one at the same time.
Apple increased the Airport selling prices by some 10$/€, so I hope it's the "fee" for the functionality to stream music to all new Airports simultaneously from the iOS devices :-D

  • Itune on iMac cannot connect to Airport Express, but Itune on XP can

    Hello
    I've the following situation:
Itune cannot see the Airport Express unless my Iphone Remote controle is connected to Itune. And eventhough, Itune fails to connect to it.
Here is the environment of my network
    1) third party LAN/Wireless router (connected to the internet)
    2) iMac (10.4.11) connected via the LAN port to the router
    3) Airport Express (7.3.2) connected to the wireless network
    4) one Iphone connected to the wireless network
    5) one XP computer connected to the wireless network
    6) All devices are in the same subnet
What really puzzle me is that Itune on the XP laptop can broadcast music to the Airport Express without any issue. But Itune on the Mac does not see at all the Airport Express unless I connect my Iphone to Itune. When I do so, the Airport Express become listed in the status bar of Itune. But if I try to make Itune connect to it, it try for a while then it stop trying without any error message.
I really don't understand what is going on. Does any body can give my a bit more information how Itune and Airport Express communicate? Or have any idea where I should direct my troubleshooting?
Thanks in advance for any help

So did i screw something up last night when i connected using my PC?
That sounds likely. Maybe the security type or password?
And if so how do i re-set the link with my mac??
Try the options described on pp. 30-33 of http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/AirPort_Express_SetupGuide.pdf
Once you get things working again, suggest you save the settings in a profile. In future when you bring the PC home, create a different profile for experimentation. Switch back to the usual profile when you're done with the PC. Eventually, you should be able to develop one profile that works with both machines.

  • Airport Express - want only to use it for connecting a printer wirelessly

Ugh... have opened up a brand new Canon printer and plugged it into a new Airport Express and hoped that it would somehow talk to my iMac across the room but no luck. Apple Store boy said no problem - click and plug and play... but alas no. Right now, my internet modem is plugged directly into my iMac, so I don't need the Airport Express to assist with anything that has to do with my internet connection, and I wanted Airport Express to solely link my printer to my iMac. A) Hope I am explaining my plight here properly. B) Hope that what I want to do is entirely possible. Am fearful that iMac can only process wired or wireless but not both. Anyway - if anyone can assist - very much appreciated.

    Hey, Duane, that's actually incorrect.
You can be connected to the internet via ethernet and the non-internet wireless network created by your Airport Express simultaneously, and thus be able to print and browse at the same time. The iMac will have two IP addresses, one for each connection type, and it will definitely work.
    To the OP:
Setup will be as easy as leaving your modem/ethernet setup as is and plugging the printer into the Express, plugging the Express into wall and opening Airport Utility on your Mac. You'll want to "create wireless network" and give it a name and password. Make sure Airport is turned on, join the network, and add a printer in the Print & Fax preference pane. Print a test page. Done.
You could also connect the modem to the Express, and not plug anything into the iMac, and run everything off your wireless network.

  • Airport Express as a wireless bridge can't connect using the 2.4GHz band

I have an Airport Extreme with simultaneous dual-band support as well as an Airport Express serving as a wireless bridge to extend the range of my primary base station.

By the way, the 5GHz band does not penetrate very well,
That is not surprising since the higher frequency signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. Many users are finding that you almost have to have a line-of-sight situation between the computer and router for 5 GHz to work really well.
and the signal becomes weaker significantly after it penetrates through two walls.
Again, not surprising. What is surprising is that the AirPort Express was choosing the 5 GHz band to "extend", as it normally latches onto the stronger of the two signals, which almost always the 2.4 GHz signal.
You may be correct that the newer firmware has made some changes in this regard. My guess would be that most users were trying to extend the 5 GHz band and not having much success. We'll keep an eye on this.

  • Can't configure a new Airport Express or my old one

    Hi,
I just purchased a new Airport Extreme today and I cannot get it set up.  I keep getting an error message that states "An Error Occured While Reading The Configuration"(Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. -5).  It also gives me the same error message when I try to re-configure my old Airport Express.  I've tried numerous re-sets and have tried connecting it to my Airport Extreme Base Station(802.11n) via ethernet to no avail.  I also tried to install a firmware update on my new Airport Express but that failed shortly after the download.  I was hoping the firmware update might fix the configuration error.  I use the Airport Express's to extend my network and have successfully set these up before so I don't know what the problem is.  I'm using an iMac 3.06, on OS 10.7.1, which is connected to my AEBS via ethernet.
    Thanks!

  • Brand New Airport Express-Green Light Wireless, Dead Green Wired

I just bought a brand-new airport express device. I have a cable modem connected to a dual band AirPort Extreme base station in my basement. My house is wired with Cat5 Ethernet cable. In a far bedroom, I am replacing an airport express-N (previous model) that was hard-wired to the Extreme. Always worked perfectly in extending and supplying 2.4ghz band wifi to that part of the house. I bought the brand-new AirPort Express to utilize the dual band bridge.
After many hours of trying, this new airport express will only work properly if I do not plug in the Ethernet cable. It seems to be performing well, but i was under the impression that an ethernet cable should be used to physically connect the AirPort devices each other.
Currently, in this wireless setup, I do have both bands available. I feel that if I used the cable, I would have much stronger better signal.
Interestingly, when I do ether-connect the airport devices together. My AirPort Utility looses all of my AirPort devices and shows (with a yellow dot) that my Internet (modem) is not available. At the same time, all of my AirPort devices continue to show a green light. I am unable to connect anything with any of my wireless devices.
Also, when everything seems to be working fine, my AirPort Utility does depict the wireless set up with a dashed line between the two AirPort devices representing that it is wireless connection.
With my last AirPort Express, a wireless set did extend the range, but only while slowing everything down. An ethernet cable, when introduced, made everything work perfectly, during which time the AirPort Utility depicted that setup with all solid line indicating wired connectivity.
I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who might be able to tell me why when I introducing ethernet to the new AirPort Express, it takes down the entire wireless network.
Hi, of course, try all of the normal troubleshooting suggestions. I recycled all devices I have rebooted everything.

It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when switching out network components ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • How do I change the 5 ghz channel on new Airport Express when extended from Time Capsule?

Hi there. My Airplay device connected to the new Aiport Express keeps cutting out.
The 5ghz connection on my Time Capsule is set to channel 48. I have a new Airport Express (with Airplay device) extending from the Time Capsule and when I use WiFi Scanner, it shows the Airport Express set to channel 157. What gives? Is there a way to change to channel 48 or does this not matter? I imagine since they're on different channels, they're not talking to each other or am I .
Thanks in advance for any help.

I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36.

  • Airport Utility and new AirPort Express - Window XP

I have a desktop PC that is hardwired into my wireless router and a laptop PC that is connected wirelessly, both are running Windows XP. My AirPort Utility on my Desktop will not recognise my new AirPort Express, but my wireless laptop will. Here's the fun part....when I click on the "Continue" button to complete the initial setup the Utility goes through the "Connecting To Network" procedure but does NOT continue past. Same thing happens if I click "Manual Setup"I have reset the AirPort Express and still have no luck. Not sure what to do now...can anyone help?

There are many in the same situation.  See this thread
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23470358#23470358
And there is a fix but Apple keep deleting messages that mention it.

  • HT1515 My new Airport Express will not stop blinking an amber light.  What should I do?

I can't seem to get my new Airport Express set up properly.  I've connected wifi cable from the modem, the USB printer cable and plugged in but it continues to blink amber. I've tried all the solutions mapped out in the instructions.  What could be wrong?

Thank you so much for your reply.  I went over the AP utility and reread the notes and solved the issue!  Now, I need to solve a printing issue - I have two laptops, two Ipads and my Imac in my network and I would like them all to be able to print using my HP printer.  Working on that now!!!

    Hello lucky3480;
I don't know what else to do. I'm thinking of possibly returning the unit and purchasing a wireless internet card to install in the tower. Any help you can provide would be great. Even suggesting a good wireless card at this point
Well it looks like you're not having any luck at all with this AX set up but please don't give on it just yet, it's a good choice for extending your Network. Your on the right path, just going backwards and in the wrong direction. You'll learn a lot about stuff this way but may lead to other issues.
Before I continue, let me know if you have returned the AX or still need help. Here's a link to Apple's PDF about [Designing AirPort Networks|http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Designing_AirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf] Click on it to open in Safari but then save it to your desktop. Now open it from your desktop and start reading Chapter 3, page 42.
