New airport express flashes amber light

I just purchased an airport express. It keeps flashing the amber light. This morning my mac mini recognized its existence. It won't even recognize it tonight. On my computer, it says that the airport express is connected to our network, which is odd. I am not sure if the device is defective, or if there is anything I can do to remedy this. A call to the internet service provider indicates that the airport express is supported by their internet services. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
You may need to set up your Ax using the Airport Utility found in your utility folder. Double-click this app and go through the steps of the setup. This utility app will scan and find your Ax automatically. When you have gone through the setup process it should turn green
You may reset your Ax using a pin and go through the process from the beginning.
Good luck.

  • Airport Express flashing amber, but shows normal in airport admin utility

I just replaced a Microsoft wireless router with an Airport Extreme base station. I've had 2 airport express stations on the old wireless network working fine with solid green lights - 1 streams airtunes and the other is a print server. I installed the extreme base station and now the 2 airport express stations appear as normal / working in the airport admin utility but have flashing amber lights. the print server actually works - I can print. The airtunes streams, but it cuts out every 5-10 seconds. Can't figure out how to get rid of the flashing amber and can't find the error since the airport admin shows them as green and working normal.
    Any ideas??

Hi ...... I am having the same problem but am having difficulties finding out why.
How did you solve it ?
    Many thanks in advance

  • Airport Express flashing amber then green

I've read a few posts about recent problems with Airport Express after firmware update. I, too, am having a problem yet things are actually still working. A few days ago I noticed that my AX was flashing amber and my first thought was oh no it's quitting on me. It is located in my family room and bridges my Airport Extreme in another room. I also have Apple TV and the AX serves to extend my network for it. I ran the firmware update for the Extreme and the utility update when they 1st came out but hadn't done the Express. When I went to the computer to do it, I saw a message that said there appeared to be a problem with the Express. I ran the update and all seemed good.
But today I noticed that the Express is flashing amber again. However, after a few seconds of flashing it returns to solid green. This has been going on for over an hour and I am streaming music through my Apple TV with no interruption. So I guess there is a problem - sort of. Wanted to report what I've experienced with the recent update.

Thanks for your response. I followed your directions but my AE is still going from green to flashing amber and back to green again. I even unplugged it from the family room and brought it closer to my Airport Extreme while reinstalling the firmware and then returned it. Still doing it. But the good news is I can still listen to music and watch movies from my Apple TV without interruption. My Extreme is showing solid green as always.

  • Airport Express flashing amber; help to create an Extreme/Express network

I am a novice with wireless networks, so please bear with me....and I appreciate any advice that is in laymens terms.
I bought an iMAC G5 and a MacBook Pro (both with airport cards installed). I set up an Airport Extreme base station and have my G5 connecting to this wirelessly. This works fine. I also bought an Airport Express to extend the wireless reach within my house and to eventually hook in my stereo.
Problem 1 - my Airport express keeps flashing amber and is not being recognized. It was briefly recognized last night (although flashing amber) but this has been very rare. I've reset it, plugged it/unplugged it, but nothing stops the flashing or recognizes the express.
Problem 2 - Since I'm using an Extreme as the base station and Express to extend the network reach, what selection do I choose in the Airport Setup Assistant screen to connect the Extreme - "Set up new Airport base station" or Change settings on an existing Airport base station"? I think the latter, but want to be sure.
Problem 3 - I want to establish a network so I can use email, share files between my G5 and laptop, etc but am not clear how to do so. Airport has the option "creat network", but I really don't know what this accomplishes. I'd realy like to bring my laptop somewhere and be able to access files that are on my G5.
    So basicaly, HELLLPPP.
G5 and MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Still flashes...hard reset didn't work...and last night I even went back to factory reset. I went to the Apple store (genius bar??) and they said to bring it in if I can't fix it. We shall see.
Re the network set up..I'm starting to get there, but I've hit a stopping point. I made sure my G5 will allow file sharing, and I can see that computer in my "network", but when I aatempt to connect it asks me "Connect to the file server [computer name]" and asks me for a password. Nothing I've tried works. I just get a dialogue box that says "Connection Failed: Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled....."
Anyone know how to activate a login, if it is in fact disabled???
    Thanks in advance.

  • ITunes can't connect to my new Airport Express even when light is green and see it with Airport utility. Please help!

    Hi,
I'm using iTunes with my iMac and like listen the my music collection in my Hi-Fi which is 20 m far from the Mac. Because of the distance in my flat and other obstacles I'm using a power line. I installed the Airport Express through the Utility and no problems: Airport light is green and configured. iTunes air see it but it can't connect to it.
I made several resets, plugged and unplugged the power and no change, but Airport light is always green, see it in iTunes and the Utility.
    This is driving my crazy!
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for reacting to my question.
Yes, I did reboot the router, unplugged and replugged the Airport Express with ro result .... iTunes cannot connect to the Airport Express. I'm using power line to carry Ethernet because between my Mac and AE there are about 20 meters, but problems started since I updated AE version to version 3 ...
It is also non sense because the Utility sees it and then suddenly disappears ! but light remians green ...
I think there might be something wrong with the new firmware versions ...

  • AirPort base flashing amber light

The AirPort Utility cannot configure the AirPort Base. The base is flashing amber. The cable modem and router are in working order.
    Thank you

Reset to factory and start over.. this is common with latest firmware and OS.
You must have wireless on in the computer.. and you must have ipv6 turned to link local in the wireless preferences area.

  • Another one with flashing amber light on airport express...

New out the box airport express flashing amber...for first 30 seconds after plugin it holds amber steady then starts flashing...
Internet connection fine...using wireless for this iPad... have sky router/modem....sky hd + box connected to router via Ethernet...
Express situated approx 1m from router nothing blocking path...even placed side by side doesn't work...
Airport utility app says device not found...
Did try connecting express to router via Ethernet cable used with sky box but didn't work either...
Any ideas...would a reset be worth a try?
My sky tv is down because of problem with dish on roof...but because my wifi is working I don't see this being connected?  Adsl for broadband and satellite for tv...

    (running commentary)
Well that wasn't quite right...so will post for anyone who might find of value in future...
The express can be connected to speakers on the same wifi network that the ISP router provides, enabling simultaneous wifi net browsing on my iPad and wifi music through speakers via AirPlay etc....turns out that the method involved includes extending the existing wifi network, so if you want to buy an airport express v2 for primarily network extension, you do not need to connect it to to the ISP router via Ethernet to achieve this...I have done this at the same time as achieving my main aim of using with speakers...so that's def a bonus...and the same goes for each new express and speaker combo you set up around your house/mansion etc...

  • I am upgrading wi-fi router from Airport Express to Airport Extreme. I followed set up instructions yet I am still getting the flashing amber light and cannot setup (using manual setup or the continue button).  What should I do??

    Hello,
I am upgrading my wireless router from an Airport Express to an Airport Extreme.  After disconnecting the Express and plugging the Extreme via ethernet cable to the modem, I am receiving a flashing amber light after connecting the power source.  I also reset the modem while the Extreme was still powered and plugged into the modem, but no luck.  I also tried resetting the modem and the Extreme and still no resolution.  Please advise.  Thank you!

This error usually occurs when the Windows Firewall and/or anti-virus software blocks the connection attempt from the PC to the AirPort Extreme.
Microsoft Security Essentials can do the same thing.
Things would be much easier if you had a Mac or iPhone or iPad to set up the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise try turning off the Windows Firewall and Anti-Virus programs, etc on the PC.
Restart the PC, then see if the PC can contact the AiPort Extreme. It will likely help to connect an Ethernet cable from the PC to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the AirPort Extreme has been configured.
Re-enable the Windows Firewall, Anti-Virus, etc and restart the PC.

  • Airport express not working (flashing amber light)

I just bought an airport express and have spent days trying to set it up with my Cable modem. I use Time Warners roadrunner as my service provider and know that the cable modem is not the problem because the internet works fine when I hook my mac laptop directly up to the modem via ethernet cable. Originally when I first plugged in the airport express base station I only received the flashing amber light. I have tried unplugging the modem and plugging it back in multiple times, but I continuously get the flashing amber light on the airport base station. My modem however recognizes the airport and is flashing the light that signals that it is linked to a computer.
My computer recognizes the airport, I get a strong signal and the airport utility says that everything is ok but the light on the base station flashes amber and the Internet wont work. Originally I had it set to Connect Using: Ethernet and Configure TCP/IP: DHCP and the light flashed amber so I started messing around with the settings. I changed it to Configure TCP/IP: PPPoE but was not sure what my login and password would be so I used my account information for roadrunner and to my surprise the light stopped flashing amber and turned green. I thought my problem was miraculously solved but the Internet still wouldn’t work, it kept trying to connect to the PPOE server with no luck. I had never expected the wireless to work under the PPOE setting so I was very surprised that the light turned green rather than amber. This is very confusing to me so I put the configure setting back to Ethernet rather than PPPoE and the light started flashing amber again. I have put the airport back to its default settings many times and tried starting over, but I still get the amber light.
I have run out of things to try and do not know a whole lot about wireless Internet so any help would be useful. I know of other people that have set up their airport express with very little hassle and knowledge of computers, so I thought this was going to be an easy process, apparently I was very wrong.

Roadrunner's cable internet service uses DHCP and not PPPoE - so the first thing you need to do is change that configuration back to DHCP on your Airport Express.
Then unplug both the cable modem and Airport Express from power for a while - the longer the better. Try five minutes, and if that doesn't work then try all day or overnight. After you get tired waiting, plug the modem back into power and wait a minute. Then plug the Airport Express into power - and hopefully by now Roadrunner's connection will have been reset and the Airport Express will be able to establish a connection, get an IP address, and show you the solid green status light.

  • Brand new AirPort Extreme has only flashing amber light

    Hi all,
I just brought home an airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n to get online with my snazzy new MacBook Pro. So, I hooked the router up to my cable modem as per instructions, and all I get is a flashing amber light. I've tried rebooting the modem, and still zip. There's nothing wrong with my internet connection ~ when I connect either the desktop or the laptop via Ethernet directly to the modem, I get on line immediately. But I just can't get the base station to connect with the modem. I've waded through the forum and haven't found an answer, and since Apple no longer provides a phone number in their manuals, I have no way to get an actual human to walk me through this. I don't know whether I'm missing some crucial step, or if I have a defective base station and am just spinning my wheels trying to get it to work. Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated!
    Thanks, Kate

OK, I'm putting this back out to the group.
I've tried resetting the AEBS back to factory settings, I've unplugged and rebooted the modem & AEBS numerous times. I tried to install the 7.5 firmware, but my MacBook can't see the AEBS to perform the installation, and still, no internet connection and the persistent flashing amber light.
Comcast tells me they don't support routers, so they can't check to see if the AEBS is visible on their end ~ but I'd bet it isn't.
I'll try Apple's support line tomorrow, but in the meantime ~ has anyone else experienced this level of problem, or does it sound like I have a faulty unit?
    Thanks!
    Kate

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • HT1515 My new Airport Express will not stop blinking an amber light.  What should I do?

I can't seem to get my new Airport Express set up properly.  I've connected wifi cable from the modem, the USB printer cable and plugged in but it continues to blink amber. I've tried all the solutions mapped out in the instructions.  What could be wrong?

Thank you so much for your reply.  I went over the AP utility and reread the notes and solved the issue!  Now, I need to solve a printing issue - I have two laptops, two Ipads and my Imac in my network and I would like them all to be able to print using my HP printer.  Working on that now!!!

  • TS1589 Had to replace our Airport Extreme when it stopped working (still under warranty).  Now I can't get anything but flashing amber light. Airport utility says "error occurred" when I try to get it set up.

Had to replace our Airport Extreme (802.11n) and now can't get anything but flashing amber light.  Have gone the route of turning off modem (overnight), restarting everything this morning and at least when I turned on the laptop (no desktop) the Airport Utility opened automatically.  I put in the info for the Airport Extreme that we had previously (password, etc) but it couldn't connect (said error occurred).  I would assume this is because of the flashing amber light?

I am having a similar issue.  However I've had my airport express for over 3 years.  Yesterday we had to reset the router as it wasn't broadcasting.
Today having same issue so we reset the router again.  And now still blinking amber.  When I go to the Airport Utility I can't even go to the Manual Setup as I'm getting the Error 4.  Internet works fine as the router and modem are hooked up to my computer via Ethernet cable.
I did a factory reset and the AE is broadcasting again.  but I can't get in to protect the network.  And it's still blinking amber.
    Any thoughts would be great.
