New Airport Extreme (6th Gen) Dropping Connection from Time to Time.

Problem:
6th Generation Airport Extreme drops connection intermittently at random times.
Set Up:
6th Generation Airport Extreme (main router - no hard drive/not a time capsule) located center of house on the main floor. 2 Range extenders each approximately 30+ feet away from main router. First range extender (Airport Express - newest generation) located on the third floor parallel to main. Second range extender (Airport Express - new generation) is located at the end of the kitchen (main floor).
Main Router is connected straight from a Motorolla Surfboard modem on a foyer table at the center of the house.
Range extenders connected to Main Router wirelessly and at wall outlett height.
Previous Setup:
Same setup as above but, with the 5th Generation Airport Extreme instead of the 6th Generation.
Firmware:
All current versions.
Devices:
1 SONY VAIO VGN-FW490J
HP Notebook G60
Several WEMO outlets
1 iPad Mini
1 iPad 2
1 iPhone 5
1 Motorolla RAZR MAXX
Macbook Pro
iMac (wired from main router on foyer table)
        Note: All of these routers/range extenders/modem/computers are plugged into surge protected outlets.
Notes:
With the new Airport Extreme my family and I have been experiencing intermettent connection drops. The amber light on the main router turns on and within a few minutes turns green and connection resumes again. This has been happening for a few days now ever since I purchased the new router. This has not happened before with the 5th generation router, which I donated to our church.
I have not exchanged the product yet. I will be initiating a Complete Power Recycle after some suggested solutions in a bit. I have contacted my Internet Service Provider (Comcast) for a line check and found no problems.
Has anyone found any solutions to resolve the intermittent connection drops? Is reverting to the previous firmware going to solve this?
I would like some insights before trying to do all this. Thank you all for your time.

Before I went to exchange my 6th Gen Extreme, I ran through all possible solutions from complete power recycle to no devices connected. I even went out of my way to my cousin's house to test it out. The same problem still kept coming.
I was able to exchange my 6th Gen Airprt Extreme with another 6th Gen Extreme the other day. I set it up how the instructions told me and within an hour it did the exact same problem as the previous 6th Gen Extreme. I gave up and decided to get the ASUS RT-AC66R (ASUS RT-AC66U is the same, just the 'R' is Best Buy's model.)
The ASUS router is just as great as the 6th Gen Router. You can actually get it down to $180 by price matching to Amazon. The ASUS router has 3 antennas that you can adjust according to where the signal is used more. I pointed them more towards the backyard, upstairs, and the living room. The range is by far better than the Extreme because of this. I was able to drive down a good block (3-4 houses down) and still connected to my router. Also it has 2 USB ports which was fantastic for me so I can plug in my external hard drive and a non-wireless printer. It has many more features that I really liked that I didn't even know was possible. The router utility interface is a bit confusing at first but, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
Some features that I liked with the ASUS was the ability to have multiple guest network with time limits. 3 for 2.4gHz and 3 for 5gHz. I think that Airport guest accounts are only allowed 2.4gHz but not a 5gHz. Though I only needed 1 for each but, I can see this working well for businesses.
Another feature is traffic manager. I am able to set specific bandwith for different types of use such as, high priority 80%-100% bandwith for gaming, medium priority badwith 70%-90% for HD media streaming/data transfer, and 50%-80% low bandwith for casual web surfing. It also has it's own "beamforming" so that data isn't free roamed.
Lastly it has AiCloud sync which is basically like having a hard drive into your router but, much like having a Dropbox at the same time.
More or less I think I'll stick with the ASUS router rather than going with the new Airport Extreme. I think that it's more on firmware issue than it is hardware. If you are not willing to switch to another brand and want to keep staying with Apple, I recommend going back to the 5th generation until a new firmware or rebuilt 6th gen extreme is out.
I have not found any problem with the ASUS router and no intermittent connectivity issues.
Now I am not trying to make you buy the ASUS router. I'm merely expressing how great the product is.
I do have 60 days from Best Buy return policy to try out the ASUS (and report of any malfuntions) and if within that time a new firmware is out for the Extreme. I highly doubt I'll go back to the extreme though.

  • Extending an Airport Extreme (6th Gen) network with older Airport Express models

    I just purchased the latest Airport Extreme (6th Gen) base station to be my main wifi router.  I have two airport express models that I used in the past to extend my network with my (very) old retired Airport Extreme (2nd Gen): the 2nd Gen model A1264 (you plug into the wall directly) - I've had it for several years, and the newest 3rd Gen model A1362 (small square that lies on a desk or table) - I just purchaed a couple of months ago.
    My question is - will extending my network with either of these Airport Express models diminish my overall network speed (Especially the older model)? 
    I don't have any AC capable clients yet - so everything is running on the "n" band - and the older Express is an "n" model, but I just have this (perhaps irrational) fear that attaching older routers will slow everything down.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    The A1264 model will be able to extend only one band of the new dual band AirPort Extreme. Normally, the A1264 will extend the 2.4 GHz band since it is stronger than the 5 GHz signal.
    The A1392 will be able to extend both bands since it is also a dual band model, providing that it is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the new AirPort Extreme.
    Here, I am assuming that you are asking about extending wirelessly.
    You might want to keep in mind that extending wirelessly always involves compromises and loss of bandwidth. The main reason for this is that an extending device can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives.
    The wireless signal from the new AirPort Exterme will slow down and lose strength the further that it moves away from the main AirPort. So, the extending device gets a slower, weaker signal to extend. The result is signficantly slower wireless performance in the extended areas.
    The way to solve this is connect the extending AirPorts to the main AirPort using a permanent wired Ethernet connection.  There is no signal loss in a wire, so the extending AirPort receives a full bandwidth signal to broadcast. The result is higher and more uniform speed on the entire network.

  • ANOTHER Airport Extreme base station dropping connections

    I think my network connectivity problems predate the latest Airport software update by a few days.
    Our MacBook Pro's randomly drop an Airport connection when they are near a secondary access point operated in Bridged Mode.
    My one-year-old Airport Extreme/Time Capsule had been working fine in 2.4GHz b/g/n mode with a gigabit switch and a link to a Comcast cable modem, all set up in the northwest corner of the house. I decided to replace it with a new, dual-band Airport Extreme/Time Capsule so that we could separately operate a faster 5GHz "n" network for modern notebooks along with the 2.4GHZ b/g/n network for older notebooks and iPhones.
    We substituted the new Airport Extreme/Time Capsule for the old model and it now serves IP addresses to 5GHZ network devices. The old Time Capsule was moved to a new location in the southeast corner of the house, connected to the network via Cat 6 Ethernet, and also set it up to join the same 5GHz wireless "n" network in Bridge Mode -- it is an access point, but not serving DHCP addresses.
    Now, whenever a laptop is near that device, it accesses the LAN through that Airport Extreme's 5GHz WIFi connection. The problem is this: every few hours (though sometimes sooner - its random), our MacBook Pro's lose their network and Internet connections (not simultaneously though). This only happens if the laptops are physically closest to the older, Bridged wireless access point. It can happen in the middle of Web surfing and always, when they wake from sleep. It NEVER happens if the notebooks are physically closer to the new Airport Extreme (and hitting it's 5GHz signal) and the iPhones NEVER lose their Internet connection to the separate 2.4GHz b/g/n network.
    When it does happen, we have to Restart the notebooks to re-establish an Internet connection, though I suppose restarting the Airport Extreme/Time Capsule also might re-establish the connection. Sometimes, I can just move my laptop back to the northwest corner where the main Airport Extreme/Time Capsule is located and get right back online through that access point. But usually, I just sit in the back room, restart and rejoin the network through the secondary, wireless access point. Turning off/on Airport (at the MacBooks) accomplishes nothing and neither does Network Diagnostics.
    This affects two new, MacBook Pro "n" laptops running 10.5.8, but does not affect the iPhones. So, it only seems to be a 5GHz issue. I don't think it's RF interference because I've tried three different 5 GHz channels. I've also tried reducing the secondary Airport Extreme's transmission power to 50% and, more recently 25%, to no avail.
    This morning, it started happening again, so I finally used the Airport Utility to turn off the Wireless Mode of the secondary device for my next test (thanks to the Ethernet connections, it's still visible on the wireless network). We'll see if this solves the wireless connectivity problem.
    Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I wonder if it is some odd, configuration issue.

    I just started having a similar problem in the last week. I have three devices: the Gigabit AEBS is connected to my cable modem and is the DHCP server. An Airport Express (N) extends the wireless network. A second (G-Only) Airport Express is connected to one of the gigabit ports on the AEBS and creates a second wireless network for iPhone, G-devices and guests.
    Lately, the connection from my May 2009 MacBook Pro has started acting strange. The Airport icon in the menubar shows I have full signal strength, but I'm no longer connected to the Internet and I can't browse other N computers on the network. Devices that are connected via the G network continue working fine and remain connected to the Internet. This is interesting because even the G network has to go through the AEBS to get to the Internet. It only appears to affect the Internet connection via the AEBS's own WiFi but not its ethernet ports. If I open Airport Utility from the MacBook Pro, the AEBS status shows as Normal. Turning off/on the Airport on the MacBook accomplishes nothing but I can restart the AEBS from the Airport Utility and then everything goes back to normal. A few hours or more later, the problem occurs again.
    By holding the Option key when clicking on the Airport icon and looking at the Airport MAC address I can tell that the MacBook Pro is connected to the WiFi-N via the Airport Express extender. Like you, I may have to try and shut that one off and see if the problems occurs when it is connected directly to the AEBS. The problem with that is that since it is farther away in the house, the signal strength and thus my transmit rate will be slower. I'd be curious to see if your experiment by shutting down your secondary AE will still cause drops.

  • Airport Extreme 6th Gens having trouble (one bridge, one router)

    I have two brand new Airport Extremes that I'm trying to troubleshoot. The problem that I'm seeing is that occasionally one (or both) will stop functioning entirely on a weekly basis.
    Details on our setup:
    These are servicing a small business, generally about 40-70 devices are connected between the two. They are located apart from one another to maximize the reach of our wireless network.
    One is set up as a router (DHCP and NAT), it is connected to a switch which is connected to a Time Warner modem that is serviced by our building's IT contractors (I do not have access to those devices as a result). This has led to us receiving warnings about a double NAT, which hasn't been a real problem for us but could a potential point of where these are breaking so I figured I'd mention it.
    The other is set up as a bridge and extends the wireless network, so they are both broadcasting the same SSID. This was set up automatically upon installation of the device.
    I'm only utilizing two of the router's ethernet ports: one goes to a switch that handles our non-wireless boxes. This issue has happened regardless of the switch's presence, though, as previously we just used the ethernet ports on the Extremes and had the same problem; the other goes to the bridge.
    I'm curious as to what in the configuration may be causing this problem, because I'm not totally certain if it is the fault of the Extremes and possibly due to us using our own range of IP addresses with the . Usually it is the bridge that dies and it's a PITA to get working again - I usually have to power cycle both the bridge and the router to get the bridge to function again.

    double nat means you have 2 routers trying to, well route, basically so i suspect that tw modem is really a tw modem/router. if not, think about it, if it is just a modem, what is doing the routing before the switch?
    in a clean setup, it would look like this
    tw box connected to 1st extreme via eth (tw LAN port to ext WAN port, extreme in bridge mode)
    1st extreme to 2nd extreme via eth (again, 1st ext LAN port going into 2nd ext WAN port, extending via a wired connection)
    this is simplified. you can elongate the connections with your switch and wall jacks but the connections should be the same

  • 5th Generation Airport Extreme - Wifi Slow, dropping connections

    I just upgraded my 2nd generation Airport Extreme to a refurbished 5th generation I purchased from Apple.com
    I duplicated the configuration of the old one, as I have a static IP address and what not from my ISP. Also, I have a few port mappings for outside access. Everything plugged in via ethernet, seems to be working without issue.
    Everything wireless, which is to say - a Roku, a desktop/all in one, 3 laptops, 4 smartphones, and a tablet are not working as expected. Oddly enough, they are slow to resolve. For example, going to www.yahoo.com took nearly 20 seconds to resolve. At first I thought it was a DNS service issu, and changed to another set of DNS servers (went from Level 3 to another provider, just to test)..... same thing. Also, computers would also go from connected to "limited connectivity".
    Network is a mixed bag Windows 7, 8, and OS X, same with phones, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android, tablet is webOS or something. Everything is at least 802.11 n compatible.
    In my Wireless Settings of Airport Utility I have this configured:
    Radio Mode: Automatic - manual 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n
    Radio Channel Selection - 149 5ghz and 1 2.4 ghz
    Security, wpa2
    Wireless Network Options: unchecked is 5ghz network name
    Multicast = low
    Country = USA
    Transmit power = 100%
    WPA group key timeout = 60 seconds
    I unchecked use wide channels, and create a closed network is not checked.
    Now, I have a older airport express (I think it's 3rd gen) that I use in a plug that borders my living room / kitchen to extend the network. Nothing peculiar is configured on that thing other than the default network extension settings.
    At the moment, it is unplugged, as I was using inSSIDer to make sure my network was configured to the right channels compared to what my neighbors were doing. Everyone else is on 6 or 12, and there are no 5ghz channels in range.
    Does anyone know what might be causing the horrific resolution times on my Macbook Pro... it's pretty awful, loading your average websites takes far more time over wifi than over ethernet (also tested this).
    Really, nothing changed except some 'newer' hardware was added, the 5th gen airport. Any help is appreciated!

    Ok i have a relatively new Extreme and here is what i see on 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz.
    This happens frequently - the 5 GHz wireless connection drops, slows way down, or just does not connect.
    I reassociate to 2.4GHz and viola, works perfectly.  This is with 7.7.2 firmware.

    I just did this and was about to post it when i saw this original post.  This has been a CONSTANT problem with my Airport Extreme since I bought it....   in general 5 GHz coverage pretty much ***** in my house - a two story wood frame house - and its very flaky... very unpredictable. 
    I suspect the hardware myself... and i work in the wifi tech business...

    I have fiber optic service and the modem that came from the ISP is wirelessly capable of old version of 802.11n and short range as well, it has four lan ports as well. So I bought two Airport Extreme (AE 802.11ac) and its working ok but I'm trying to understand the difference between the two scenarios in terms of efficiency and speed;
    1. Fiber optic cable connected to modem. AE1 connected to modem Ethernet port 1
    via physical Ethernet cable. AE2 connected to modem Ethernet port 2 via
    powerline. DHCP disabled on AE 1 and AE2 and carried out by the modem. Wireless
    on modem is of course disabled. SSID the same on both AE1and AE2 but 2.4 and 5
    GHz channels are unique for each AE.

    physical Ethernet cable. AE2 connected to AE1 Ethernet port 2 via powerline.

    Your questions are really about a matter of preference. Both 1) and 2) are correct implementations.
    In 1) above, the "modem" (which is actually a modem/router) is providing the routing services for the network.
    In 2), the "modem" is acting as just that, a simple modem with AE1 acting as a router and AE2 acting as a "bridge" to AE1.
    If you asked the support folks for your modem/router which setup was best, they would say 1).  However, if you asked the support folks at Apple which setup to use, they would say 2).
    AE1 and AE2 are creating separate wireless networks, but if you use the same wireless network name,  or SSID,  and password for both networks, everything will act like one "big" network. Technically, this is called a "Roaming Network".

  • Help?  I keep getting "Unexpected Error" everytime I try to use my new Airport Express to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule.

    I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error.  Try again".  The Express is still flashing Amber.  I cannot get it to turn green.  What am I doing wrong here?  Please help me.

    Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
    Power off and restart the Time Capsule
    Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
    Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
    Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
    AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
    Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
    Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
    Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible. 
    Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
    It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend.

  • Airport Extreme (802.1) cannot connect for the first time.

    I got an Ubuntu running Wine and the Admin Utility For Windows. I am trying to connect (after a hard reset) to the Airport Extreme Base Station. But no matter what I do I cannot get through the default password (which is supposed to be 'admin' or 'public' ) Neither work - can't configure the router! Please advise!

    Do as it says. Your license is for Creative Suite, not Acrobat. You must activate the license by opening one of the other programs first.

  • Should I get the new Airport Extreme?

    I've got an Airport Extreme that is older, I think it was the first model after the old snow-globe styled ones. This one is a rectangular box in design, probably 4-5 years old.
    We use one both at home, and another at our small business. At our business we have Time Warner Business Class Internet service, so the line comes out of the wall, plugs into the cable modem, then from there we have one line going out to the airport extreme to create our wireless signal.
    I've read that this new Airport Extreme (6th Gen) is supposed to be much faster than its predecessors, but can my setup take advantage of that? Would I notice faster wireless with this unit, or is the limiting factor our basic Internet service or the cable modem? 
    A our business, we have the 10 down/2 uppackage and speed tests show that to be pretty much what we get. At home, speed tests usually clock in around 15-20 down and 1 up.
    Staples has this on sale for $169. If buying it gives me faster wireless, then it's a good investment. If it just gives me a newer device with no performance improvements, there's no point in upgrading. I'd appreciate any insight on this, thanks.

    The new AirPort Extreme 802.11"ac" will deliver faster wireless.....IF.....you also have new Mac 802.11"ac" laptops and desktops to take advantage of that speed.
    If you don't, then things will be pretty much the same as they are now...with perhaps just a bit better wireless range with the new AirPort Extreme.
    Your Internet connection speed will always be limited to the plan that you have with your provider. No router in the world will make your Internet connection go faster than your plan provides.
    The additional speed comes in handy if you are transferring files from one computer to another computer on your "local" network, or copying files from a computer to a hard drive.  In this case, the newer AirPort Extreme can allow this to happen in a third to half of the time that it now takes.
    But.....as I mentioned above....802.11"ac" is a two way street.  You have to have both an 802.11"ac" router.....and.....new 802.11"ac" laptops and computers to get this speed.

  • Brand New Airport Extreme and Motorola Surfboard 5101 Connection Dropping

    I'm going to add to the chorus and point out that my brand spanking new Airport Extreme continually loses internet connectivity with my Motorola Surfboard 5101 modem (this is used on a Time Warner connection).
    Disconnecting the Airport and connecting directly to the modem via ethernet cable works flawlessly as does using my old Linksys router. With the Airport Extreme it will work for a number of hours and then drop the internet connection. Airport Utility shows the Airport Extreme as having a green light while the internet connection has the amber "disconnected" light, but, as I said, cutting the Airport out of the connection leaves my internet connection stable and flawless so it seems the problem is either the Airport or the combination of the two.
    So, is the only solution to replace the cable modem with one that works with the Airport? If so, how do I know what will work and what won't?
    Should I return the Airport? Get a completely different 802.11ac capable router (which one)? Perhaps there is some arcae setting buried deep in the bowels of one device or the other that needs setting?

    It's ok, I got. You have to put in password "BT"    Never had to do that before, but it works....maybe this helps someone else.  

  • Have new Airport Extreme via ethernet cable from HughesNet Gen4 modem. Using NetGear WN3500RP extender. NetGear asks for different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Most of what I have read indicats extender shoul have same name as main network?

    Have new Airport Extreme conneted via ethernet cable from HughesNet Gen4 modem. Using NetGear WN3500RP extender. NetGear asks for different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Most of what I have read indicates extender should have same name as main network? How is it best to configure with the Airport Extreme router 802.11ac?

    Different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks are optional, but can be convenient for you to distinguish one from another. It's up to you.

  • Set up ix500 scansnap with AP Extreme {6th gen}

    I am having problems getting my ix500 scansnap to set up wirelessly with my AP Extreme 6th generation.  I keep getting a message that the security access is not established and that I need to change the access on the ap extreme.  Not sure how to do that.  Can anyone help here?

    This an older thread, but it came up when I was searching for my problem:
    I was having difficulties getting the iX500 to work with my 2013 Airport Extreme (6th Gen ?) it would have a blue light, be given an IP but you could not ping, or connect to it.
    I then discovered, if I connected the scanner and computer to the Airport Guest network, it would work. I went back to the regular (non-guest) network, and turned off my guest network option, and now it works fine on the main network.
    Seems to be a problem with the iX500 (awesome scanner and OCR software b.t.w) and an Airport Extreme that has a guest network setup.
    I don't have any guests right now, so I'm turning that Airport feature off and letting Fujitsu know - they have been helpful, don't know if this is Apple or Fujitsu, I have not had any other devices have reachability issues with Guest network enabled, although my other non-computer devices are wired to the Airport Extreme (ethernet and USB)

    I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
    I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
    I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
    I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
    My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
    I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
    My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

    Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
    I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
    router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
    always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
    mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
    to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
    The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.

  • Best setup for new airport with wired connection to old airport extreme (4th gen)

    I have an AirPort Extreme (4th gen) in my basement (of a three story house) connected directly to the Fios box (I am not using the Verizon g router).  The new AirPort (ac) is connected to the old one by in-wall Cat 6e to an upstairs bedroom.  Can/should I turn off wifi on the n router for best wireless performance?  What would the optimal setup be?
    On the airport utility I selected "replace existing Airport" and the new ac router is up and running and working fine.  I wonder whether the fact that wifi on the old Airport is still on may be good for coverage around the house, but compromising the wireless bandwidth/speed?  I haven't noticed any speed issues yet, but I do a lot of video streaming so I want to ensure I have the best setup.  Range doesn't seem to be a major issue in my house.  It is more important to me to have strong wifi signal upstairs.

    If the AirPorts are connected using Ethernet, then no bandwidth is being lost on the network. Keep the wireless functions "on" at both AirPorts for additional wireless coverage and speed.
