New Airport Extreme - can't see old Airport Express

I've succesfully installed my new airport extreme but the old airport express is not visible anywhere. What is the procedure to connect it to the network?

Do a factory reset. Unplug the Express, take a paper clip or ball point pen, depress the reset button and hold it in while you plug your Express back into a power outlet. The light will blink green a couple of times and then blink amber rapidly. When the amber light stop blinking and stays solid, you can release the reset button. Give it s a few minutes to recycle. Then open Airport Utility (I assume when you say that you installed your new Extreme you mean the 802.11n. If you mean the Extreme g, use Airport Setup Assistant. Once it opens it should scan and your Express will show up with its factory ID. You can use the Utility to set it up.

My Airport Extreme Can't See My USB Disk

Hi. I have a new airport extreme out of the box, factory fresh. I plugged in my USB hard drive and cannot see it displayed in the Airport Utility under Disks. I have tried different hard drives, different cables, rebooted the airport, restored it to default settings but still no joy.
The first disk I tried was a factory fresh Buffalo formatted to NTFS. Then I tried my USB disk that was the Time Machine backup on my old Mac that I had connected via a USB cable. Neither can be seen.
At my wits end....

The drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32 to be recognized at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is underpowered. For that reason, it is often necessary to use a powered USB hub with a hard drive......even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
If the drive is formatted correctly, and you have a powered USB hub, and the drive will still not appear in AirPort Utility, then it is time to take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store or service to have the USB port checked out.

Airport extreme can't see any wireless networks.

Hi, I have an iMac that has always used an ethernet connection to the internet, but now I want to connect wirelessly. But it doesn't seem to "see" any networks, mine or otherwise, which work fine on my other apple devices. Does the fact that my wireless card was purchased (as was the imac itself) overseas make it incompatible with US wireless networks? Or is the card broken and I have to take the computer in for repair? Or is there some way I can resolve it myself?
Here is what my Airport card info says:

Yes, it does. Still doesn't "see" any networks. If I need a new airport card, is this something I can do myself or does it have to be done at an apple repair shop?

For quite a while my MBP (10.5.8) cannot see the Airport Extreme 802.11n (AE) (2nd ed) anymore when I start Airport Utility (AU) (v5.5.3). My solution was to lower security settings of the MBP to 'accept all incoming connections', knowing that this was not a nice solution. Normally I had selected 'acces for specific services and programs' (the lowest option - my AE differs in language). In the past I denied access for requests that regularly came from mDNSresponder (etc), as I could not easily find out how necessary they were. I am not sure whether Bonjour is running; I try to stick to TCP/IP (without Netbios); the same might be the case with other obscure network services...
Then I added another network drive (WD Mybooklive) that works based on shares. The installation program worked fine, I was able to set up the drive for Timemachine backups and -in the proces of upgrading to Snow leopard (I always stay one OS version behind)- my MP3 collection could be read from another drive that was connected to the AE.
I am not sure what exactly lead to the loss, but now I can not see the shares anymore in the finder. Unless I select 'connect to server' (Cmd-K) and fill in afp://ip-adres. I had some trouble with the MBP-drive and Disk Utily could not fix it in multi-user mode. Applejack-auto in single user mode finished after some repairs (catalog file and catalog hierarchy errors), but I doubt that causes the trouble.
In all cases, internetting and accessing the connected drive was no problem.
The funny thing is, my Mac Mini (10.5.8) however can see the AE with Airport Utility (different version) fine. Somehow I get the idea that the networkstack of my MBP has been messed up, but I don't know what it should be, nor how I could check it, or how to repair the stack. But maybe it is not the stack at all.
Right now, I've just reset the AE by holding the reset button for about 10 s. The name has returned to 'Base Station xx', which is visible in AU, but when I click on another button ('manual configuration' or 'continue'), first the message "Are you sure you want to connect to another wireless network?". Finally no connection appears and the error 'AU cannot find your Airport' shows up (while the Base Station is visible in the left column) - or does not show up when I refuse to switch to another network.
So, who can help me to reconnect to the Airport Extreme and/or repair the network stack?

WDS is a difficult setup for many users because it is so easy to make a mistake (while swearing that you are not).

I can't add any more to this other than to say that long ago when I used WDS, I would swear that I had all the MAC addresses entered correctly, etc and would still have problems. So, I ask my wife to watch me and she immediately catches something like I entered a "l" (letter L) instead of a number "1", or a "O" (letter O) instead of a "0" (number zero).
Finally, there's always the possibility of device that is not holding settings...a defective device.
Hopefully, Tesserax will have some additional thoughts.

My AirPort Extreme can not see my SMC router

I have a new MacBook Pro. It can see other routers (in my neighborhood) and connect to the internet by ethernet cable into my SMC router but it can not see the SMC router wirlessly. I have no security on my router right now. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem: SMC Barricade G 2408WBRP-G-CA with v2.08 firmware. Because there's lots of talk of problems with WEP, turned that off, but no luck, the built-in airport card of the powerbook won't connect to the router.
I have successfully connected to a Cisco access point at work with 128-bit WEP with no problem at all, so I'm certain the hardware in the machine is functioning... just not with this access point.
This is a brand new 17" Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro that I just received... all available software updates applied.

Airport Extreme, can't see usb disk from media player

I have a WD hard drive (formatted in FAT32) connected to my Airport Extreme. I can access it from my MacBook and I can see it under disks in Airport Utility. When I try to access the drive wirelessly from my Merlin media player (that's connected to my TV), the drive doesn't show up under the Airport Extreme Workgroup. I should mention that when the drive is plugged into my MacBook, I CAN access the drive on my media player under my MacBook's Workgroup. So I'm assuming the issue is with the Airport allowing the drive to be seen, and not the format of the drive itself. Can anyone help?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>

Network works fine but Airport Utility can't see the Airport

If someone knows of an earlier discussion on this I'd be grateful for a pointer. My Airport Extreme network has been working fine, syncing with Apple TV, accessing the Internet, etc, but The AirPort Utility can't find it! I discovered this when I had trouble printing and started up the Utility to see if there was something I could do to fix it. The utility can't find it but the network is working fine. However I do need to connect a printer to it.
Any advise on what I can do?

If you mean plug one into the other by ethernet and use both in roaming network.. absolutely.. it is the best way.

I like the airplay option that comes with express. I am surprised that the Extreme and Time capsule do not come with this simple option. I already have express and I want to be able to use my hard drive(s) wirelessly.

Actually, it is NOT a simple option as it would require a complete redesign of either the Extreme or Time Capsule to include the audio hardware provided in the Express. However, I would agree with you that it would be nice option to have this feature with all Apple routers.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use the USB port on the AirPort Express for this as it doesn't support external USB HDDs.

Yes. You can connect your desktop, via Ethernet, to any of the available LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme.

WDS between AirPort Extreme Dual-Band and old AirPort Express

I've had a WDS network between two older Airport Express (802.11g version) units for a couple of years, one connected to my DSL-router, and the other one connected to my desktop computer. This way I was able to get my desktop computer on the wireless network.
Yesterday I decided to upgrade the one connected to my DSL-router to an AirPort Extreme, because I needed the extra Ethernet connectors. Since the new AirPort Extreme Dual-Band has some fancy new features, I decided to go ahead and re-configure it all.
However, I'm having issues with the Airport Utility for Windows and WDS when I try to add my Express' Apple-ID to the Extreme's list of WDS externals. My Extreme is the unit I've decided to use as a WDS main. When I try to configure the hardware, I get an error saying in Norwegian (as I run Norwegian Windows and Airport Utility) that translates into something like "WDS requires multiple Apple wireless devices. Add at least one WDS peer." in English. That's pretty bizarre, because I just added a WDS external, and it is indeed an Apple product. Just to be sure, I tried with my other Airport Express - same error.
Now, I've tried to work around this issue by setting up the Express as the WDS main instead, since I don't get the same error message when configuring it. The Extreme was still connected to the DSL-router, but the Express was now set up as a WDS main. This didn't help much. I still got the same error message when setting up the Extreme as a WDS external. And yes, I entered the Airport-ID correctly - I've double and tripple checked them all.
To me it looks like the Airport Utility either doesn't recognize the Apple-ID as an apple one when configuring the Extreme, or it's seriously bugged when handling the list of WDS externals. But I could be wrong.

Updated my iTunes and now my mac can not see my airport express no matter what I have tried

recently updated my itunes and the firmware on my airport extreme and suddenly itunes does not recognize my airport express for speakers and my mac through airport utilities can not see my airport express. *** I have tried everything and nothing will bring the airport express back to life what to do

Airport utility v6 doesn't see old airport extreme 1st ten

Using new version 6 Airport Utility, does not see older Airport Extreme (1st gen) that is on my network. It sees my newer AP extreme and shows the ID for old machine yet I can't get to it to change configuration.

You will need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to be able to access and make changes to any of the older AirPort products. AirPort Utility 6.0 only works with newer "n" devices.
You can use the more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure all of your AirPorts...old or new.
Just keep both versions on your Mac and use the one that you want.

Windows XP can't see my Airport Extreme

Was given an airport extreme to replace my old d-link wireless router, which stereotypically died.
I have a D-Link Airplus G+ wireless card, and cannot fathom how to make my computer see the airport.
Airport is plugged into broadband, it's green light is glowing happily. Airport utility comes up blank. Do I need to adjust the settings for my wireless card, which also scans and finds no networks?

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups. I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.
