New Airport Extreme, new problems.

Hi all. I have just purchased and installed a new airport extreme and am having some issues with it already. Last night during install, When it got to the end of the setup process, the computer screen said that the Airport extreme was to restart. Well, that seemed to take forever, and then the airport that was visable from the Airport utility disappeared. The Green light on the unit was on, indicating no problems, but I was not able to access the internet. I played with it for a while, and tried resetting and going through the set up 2 more times, with the same result. I had given up and was going to contact apple in the morning when suddenly my Ipad received a message from my friend who had sent the message about an hour before. I assumed that the internet was now working, which I confirmed with my Ipad and my Imac. All seemed ok. I even downloaded the Airport app for my I pad and could see the device from the screen.
Today, my Ipad's airport app could not see the device, yet the network was working. Is this typical?
Also, can you hide the SSID (network name). My last wireless router had this feature, which I thought was nice.
Last thing. I can't seem to print from my wireless printer any more. My previous router worked fine for this. It now says it is not connected any more. The network name and password are the same with this Airport as my last router, so I figured it shoud work fine. In the manual, it doesn't seem to mention wireless printing, only printers connected to the Airport with a USB. Does it only work that way?
Sorry for all the questions. If This thing is not going to co-operate, it will be returned to the store. I normally love Apples products, but this one has me scratching my head in doubt.

First you can block the SSID, you need to go into Airport Utility and click on wireless then click the wireless network options and make sure the Create a closed network is selected.  Regarding the iOS Airport Utility that could have sometimes.  On your printer the Airport Extreme has a USB connector that you can connect a printer to it.  It you want to add the printer to the network wirelessly then you may need to go in to you printer setup.

  • PROBLEM with new Airport Extreme

i just bought the new airport extreme and what was supposed to be a simple setup process has taken longer than 10 hours!
    please help!
    i have 3 computers.
2 are macs, they will be using wireless. 1 is a PC, which will be wired to the airport extreme.
the airport extreme is connected to a VOIP router, which is then connected to the DSL router.
i have always used my old airport extreme without issues, but because i want to connect the PC as well, i must ditch the airport express in favour for one with LAN ports. hence, the troublesome airport extreme.
    it doesn't work.
none of my computers can recognize the new network. (even though i've established one, with passwords and everything)
the router flashes amber - internet works, but not wireless.
the router periodically flashes green - ironically, nothing works then!!!!
    please help!!!
    EDIT: DIAGRAM
    1. WHEN IT WORKED:
INTERNET --> PROVIDER ROUTER --> VOIP ROUTER --> AIRPORT EXPRESS --> MAC 1, MAC 2 (WIRELESS)
    2. WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK:
INTERNET --> PROVIDER ROUTER --> VOIP ROUTER --> AIRPORT EXTREME --> MAC 1, MAC 2 (WIRELESS), PC (WIRED)

It appears to me that you may possibly have sever conflict issues as well as maybe not having the Network confiqured correctly.
I have a 3 story OLD VICTORIAN and I am using the Old Airport Extreme Base and have expierianced NO PROBLEMS at all.
If I may suggest a different approach.
    Try to start from scratch.
    SHUT EVERYTHING OFF.
Run an ethernet cable from your Internet Service Providers MODEM to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme Base
Set it up DHCP and you want the Airport to distribute IP's
use the Airport setup assistant and Airport Admin Utility.
Using 2 Routers in the mix unless you have ony one the main to distribute the IP's, IF you have 2 Routers and they are both set up to distribute the IP's there is your problem.
The New Airport Extreme Base is far better then the older model and you shouldn't need another router in the mix at all to get the coverage of your entire house.
Take the Netgear clear out and use the Airport Extreme and the Expresses as you had them before. There is a very good possibility that you will need to do evrything one at a time and step by step.
Do not just plug everything in, and turn everything on and expect it to work. Do everthing step by step with all security disabled to begin with.
Be sure when you do your system reset that you start by powering up the MODEM 1st and wait for it to acquire the signal before you power up the Airport Extreme and again you must wait for it to acquire the signal. You can use the LAN Ports for anyyhing you need HARDWIRED. If you don't wait and do things in the proper order you will have problems, I can't stress enough that it must be done in the proper sequence. Have a look at the Paperwork of either the Netgear's Yellow Phamplet or the Booklet that came with the Extreme to bear out what I explained on the sequence.

  • Problems getting an external hard drive to work on the new Airport Extreme

I have spent hours trying to get my 320GB external hard drive to work with the new airport extreme 802.11N. I have spent hours pouring over all of the posts here discussing possible solutions, all of which have not worked. This morning, however, I gave it another try and FINALLY, I have it working. I tried something simple. Here it is:
Using the Apple Disk Utility Program, I formated my drive using the MS-DOS mode, called my Hard drive "ItunesHD". It took about 20 minutes to complete (i'm assuming because of the size of the drive). I then unplugged the router and hard drive, turned on the hard drive, then the router. After my macbook pro reconnected, I clicked on the iDisk utility icon in my menu bar, provided my password and FINALLY saw the network drive icon on my desktop!!! It seems that formatting my drive using MS-DOS compatibility mode finally worked for me. I'm not saying this will work for anyone else who is having this problem, but you can at least try it. I tried all of the MAC formatting options and have had no luck.
What I would like to know now is (..if anyone has these answers, please let me know):
    1. What is the maximum SINGLE drive capacity that this router will understand...500GB, 1TB, 2TB? I would like to get the biggest bang for my buck.
    2. Keeping #1 one in mind, I purchased an Apple TV (still waiting on it to arrive) and I would like to know if it will read multiple hard drives connected to the Airport Extreme router (...say (2) 500GB hard drives). I know you can have multiple libraries in iTunes (which to me is a cheesy solutions, there should be an option in the preferences that would allow you to save your music in one place and your movies in another). Anybody have any idea on this one?
I basically want to rip all of my dvd movies on a big hard drive connected to my airport extreme to use with my AppleTV , so I just need to find out about the maximum size and hooking up more than one hard drive and getting the AppleTV to recognize them all.
    thnks
MacBook Pro Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry you had so much trouble hooking up a hard drive to the base station. I've done some experimenting with the feature and this is what I've found out.
You can use either the native Mac format, Mac OS Extended, or the Microsoft format known as FAT. Apple calls FAT, MS-DOS File System in Disk Utility.
If you use Mac OS Extended, the Macs on the network will be able to connect to the drive using the native AFP (Apple File Protocol) or the Microsoft native SMB (Server Message Block) protocol. PCs will only use the SMB protocol of course.
If you use MS-DOS File System both the Macs and the PCs will only use SMB to connect to the drive over the network.
Basically I've found everything works as expected with regard to volumes connected to a network.
One thing I don't have installed is the iDisk Utility. I'm wondering if it may be the cause of the problems you were having. But reading through your post it may also be the difference between expected behaviour and the proper procedure for discovering and mounting network volumes. Let me explain.
You only mention having trouble getting the drive to show up on your Desktop, you didn't describe how you went about discovering the network drive. It isn't just suppose to show up on your desktop when you plug it in to the Extreme base station. It doesn't work like the iDisk or disks connected directly to your computer using USB/Firewire.
Normally with network drives you're suppose to either browse for them using the Network icon in the Finder or using the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu, you would type the address in directly for the network volume you want to mount. Try it and see what happens.
Now to answer your other questions.
I don't have a volume large enough to hit any limits the base station may have but I did read a post about someone who said they had a 1.5 TB volume connected and could only see 1 TB of it. They were forced to partition the drive to see all available space and of course the volumes showed up as two separate drives. One thing wasn't made clear though. They didn't say what volume format they were using to format the drive, Mac OS Extended or MS-DOS.
Everything having to do with the AppleTV is just speculation at this point since no one has one yet but from what has been demonstrated so far, AppleTV relies on iTunes. In other words, it won't pull data from network volumes on its own, a computer running iTunes needs to feed it.

  • New AirPort Extreme Problems

    Hello,
I just installed a the new AirPort Extreme connected to wired Ethernet as a Server for USB-Harddisks.
Unfortunatele, it seems to work very unstable. I want to use the connected disks with an iMac G5 and an MacMini Core Duo. Sometimes the Extreme does not appear in the Network list, sometimes it does but disappears after a while.
I got two updates (2007-1, 2007-2) on the Computer where I installed the disc that came with the AirPort Extreme. Is there any further step needed to actually upgrade the box or is it all done while "installing" the update?
    2)
As I right now use the box as a file server only, can I disable WLAN somehow? The setup wizzard is not very clear and the former Admin Utility does not work with the new box.
    3)
Is there a way to let the connected harddiscs sleep while no activity is going on? How to setup such details?
    Thanks for helping,
    Frank

The Windows AirPort Utility isn't constantly scanning for you network. Once it sees the network, it keeps it listed until you click the rescan button. If you were to click the rescan button when the network was not seen by your wireless card, I bet it would not show it then either. On the other hand, Windows itself is constant doing background scans. I've noticed with Windows, in general, networks come and go and you get those idiotic bubbles telling you so.

  • Setup Problems with New AirPort Extreme and Dell Desktop XP with ethernet

I have a Dell desktop computer at home with a cisco cable modem connected to Comcast. I am trying to setup a new wireless network using new AirPort extreme so that new iPad can use wireless.
Connections seem to work but when running the AirPort Utility, it doesn't find my base station. The Dell doesn't have wireless. Does the Airport Utility only work via wireless? Or can it work across the ethernet connection?
    I'd appreciate anyone's help.
    Thanks.

Hello VL Crew. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does the Airport Utility only work via wireless?
No, the AirPort Utility will work whether your computer is connected to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by wire or wireless.

  • I have a new Airport Extreme and an old airport express.  I am getting an amber light on the new Extreme and a green light on the Express.   I have internet no problem but the status light is blinking amber

I have a new Airport Extreme and and old airport express.  I am getting an amber status light on the Extreme and a green light on the Express.  The Extreme is blinking amber all the time.
I have internet and everything seems to be working.
I have reset and pulled the power cord on both the extreme and the internet block
How do I make it Green?

If things seem to be working OK, but the amber light is flashing......the AirPort Extreme has a message for you. To see what that might be......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon
Click on the amber dot in the small window
It might be a message that a firmware update is available for your AirPort Extreme.

  • Problem connecting MacBookPro Core Duo to New Airport extreme

I have just bought a new Airport Extreme and both my Core 2 Duo and G5 iMac connect to the internet fine.
I rent a flat out to tenants downstairs and my tenant shares my internet connection using a number of Macs. However he cannot connect his Core Duo MacBook Pro.
Looking in System Preferences Network I note that it tells me that :
Airport is connected to the network "Internet". Airport has a self assigned IP Address and may not be able to connect to the internet"
Looking under TCP/IP the setting is set to Using DHCP. However rather than having a 10.0.1.200 address it has 169.254.231.100 and the Subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 and it cannot see the router 10.0.1.1.
Any thoughts. Does it need a firmware update or something

I assume you are not using one of the "n" only settings on the AEBS. With the radio mode set to "n" only, the core duo will not see the base station. This discussion might help-http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4155162&#4155162

  • New AirPort Extreme backwards compatible with old Mac?

I have an old airport express from around 2004 and I made the mistake of upgrading directly from snow leopard to mountain lion. Subsequently I have been living with having to re enter my long WEP key every time I turn on my computer because of an incompatibility issue between the airport and my 2010 iMac. I want to get an AirPort Extreme to end this issue as well as increase the distance my computer and other wifi devices can be away from the base station.
The problem is that my parents have what i believe to be a 2006 intel iMac. I know the utility software for a new airport won't run on their old iMac. That's fine because I can run it on mine.
My question is, would my parent's old iMac have issues connecting to a  network running on a new AirPort Extreme?
    Thanks!

No, there would be no issues as WiFi is a standard.

  • New Airport Extreme, internet on some devices, not others

    To All:
I bought one of the new Airport Extreme routers (the verticle model) for my home wifi system yesterday and installed it.  Although the performance is obviously much better on those devices that have been able to connect to the system, I have only been able to consistently connect with three out of the eight devices in our home.  All of the devices "see" the network, they just can't connect.  When you try to connect the device seems to go into a feedback loop where you can see it transmitting and receiving information, but nothing happens. A census of the devices is as follows:
1 2007 Mac running Mtn. Lion ver: 10.8.4 (connects, that is what I am writing this on)
2 ipads both running system 6.1.3 (10b329), (one connects, the other doesn't--the one that connects I upgraded the system software yesterday)
2 iPhones, 1 iphone 4s running 6.1.3 (10b329) which connects, 1 iphone 3 (unknown software) which does not connect
2 Windows laptops, 1 running Windows 7, 1 running Windows 8, neither connect
    Xbox, doesn't connect
The system that I have is a modem that comes off of a high speed wireless (WiMax type of service) antenna that directly connects to the Airport router which is on the main floor of the house with very good signal strength throughout our home.
I have searched many message boards and tried all of the "wifi tricks" for getting the system to run including:
Disconnecting and rebooting devices in sequence
Renaming network and establishing new passwords
    Renewing the DHCP lease
Upgrading OS software to current versions (this computer and one iPad
Can anyone help me with this problem?
    Regards,
    Garet

  • New Airport Extreme works fine with everything except my husband's Toshiba running Windows 7

I have no idea how to fix this problem.  He scanned his computer (Windows 7) for viruses, and nothing came back.  He deleted our home network from his laptop, then added it back.
His computer shows that he has "limited access" to our home network and NO internet access.  It also shows he has four bars, so he has a good signal.  Four other people in the house using macs, ipods, ipads, and kindle fires aren't having an issues.
Is the problem with his laptop or with my new Airport Extreme?  We upgraded from a very old version (I think it was the 1st one), he never had a problem with the old Airport Extreme.  He actually didn't have a problem with the new one until about a week after I had it up, which makes me think the problem is with his computer?
His Toshiba has no problem connecting to his Verizon mifi.
Could someone please offer me some advice?

I think I may have solved my own problem.  I read somewhere online that he needs to hit his "F2" button.  He hit it and his computer hooked right up to our network.  Previously, we would have to restart Airport Extreme and his computer so he could connect.  Even doing that the connection would last between five minutes and two days.
Very strange.  Hopefully problem solved.  Time will tell.

  • New Airport Extreme in Bridge mode -- some devices have no internet access

I just bought a new Airport Extreme as my old one which was probably 7 years old required restarting every day. My setup is as follows: DSL cable modem to Linksys Router (for a long set of convoluted reasons, I can't remove this layer) and then Airport Extreme. This is how I had it set up with my old one. The only difference is I recently started looking into using "Back to the Mac" on MobileMe and in order for it to work, I set my new Airport Extreme to Bridge mode due to dual NAT. I have an iMac, PC, MBP, MBA, iphone 4, AppleTV and ipad. All was working fine last night when I set it up. 24 hours later, for some odd reasons, I can't have my PC accessing the wireless network at the same time. If I did, it would knock my iMac off the network and says some other device is using the same IP address. For a while, only my iMac (my main computer) can access it and even my iphone can't. At this very moment, my iphone, imac and MBP all have access to the wireless network. My MBA and iPad has no internet connection. I've restarted Airport Extreme, Linksys, and modem more than once... If I switch back to "Use Public IP Address" instead of Bridge mode, everything works except for "Back to the Mac"... Help!

Hey Bob, Thanks...I have already repeated that multiple times yesterday and today but to no avail. I tried to get into the Linksys router control panel but unfortunately we can't remember the username and password (the router is not mine). The make things even more complicated, the router is actually part of the internet package provided by the ISP and they use a PPPoE to log in. Theoretically, we could do a hard reset but the problem is the ISP will not release the PPPoE information unless we sign a long and complicated form saying we want to bypass their Linksys router. We can do that but this process will take days and weeks... Our ISP confirmed that the Linksys router is set to max out at 5 DHCP but we can only connect 3 machines at a time. They are coming out to take a look tomorrow but in the meantime I have reset the Airport Extreme to "Distribute a Public IP Address" mode which will allow access to all computers/devices. What's even more weird is that if I did the Bridge mode, it messes up the Linksys router's own network as well. We can't even just sign into that network... Any ideas why?

  • New Airport Extreme Set Up Issues

I purchased a new Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Wireless Base Station today. I followed the instruction and set it up. My problem is I can not get the networking capability across my family members machines.
My set up is that I have Two Compaq PCs running Windows XP connected via ethernet to the AEBS and I have a Third Compaq PC connected wirelessly. They all can see the network and are getting an IP addreess assigned by DHCP (10.0.1.199, 10.0.1.200 and 10.0.1.197). The problem is they can't see each other when I try to visit workgroup (All have same workgroup name 'MSHOME') computers or the USB printer I have plugged into the AEBS. I have been at this for 4 hours reading posts / rebooting PCs & AEBS and changing setting with no luck. Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated.

I have gotten the Printer on the USB connection work thru the Bonjour connection. Still have not been able to view my PCs on the Network or in the Workgroup still.

  • New Airport Extreme isn't working... hardware issue?

    Hey,
I recently bought a new 802.11n airport extreme, after having some troubles with a four year old wireless router. My old router would stop working, forcing me to unplug and plug the unit back in to get it to restart. This would happen about once or twice a week. Two days ago I bought the new airport extreme, and successfully set it up (or so I thought). It displays impressive speeds and seemed to work completely fine from the moment I set it up.
Around two hours later however, the unit stopped transmitting. The wireless network disappeared, and even using airport utility I could not see the unit. I took a look at the unit and noticed that it still displayed a green light (I thought this only occurred when everything was in proper working order). I found a solution to be to unplug and plug back in the router. However, a few hours later, the exact same thing occurred. This has been happening every few hours ever since I plugged it in.
I've talked to apple support once, and they took me through the process of hard resetting the router. This didn't fix anything.
Anyway, if anyone has a solution to this problem, I would be VERY appreciative. Also, I can return the unit for a new one within the next 14 days, so if you guys think it's a hardware problem, I would definitely replace it with another unit.
    -Thanks

I have the same problem with my new AEBS. The AEBS n Giga is connected via ethernet to my G5. About 2 or 3 times a day my entire network will go down. The AEBS light goes off completely and the Airport Utility cannot find it. The only way to get it back is to power cycle it. I called Apple and was told this is a "known issue" and that I would just have to wait for a firmware update to correct the problem. I'm not happy.... I plan on calling and insisting on a replacement as this problem doesn't seem to happen with EVERY unit. My friend bought one the same day and store that I did and he has no problems. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
    Update:
Apple exchanged it and I got a new one today. I plugged it in only to have the exact same problems!!!! The "geniius' at the bar said he had the same problem and it was his modem. Whatever.... Mine's going on ebay today. Too bad, cause when it worked it was great!

  • External HD no longer accessible with new Airport Extreme

    Hello all,
I recently purchased a new Airport Extreme to replace a previous version that stopped working.  I plugged my existing usb hard drive (used for both itunes library and time machine backups) into the new AEBS.  The usb hard drive shows up under "Shared" in Finder, but when I click on the folder to open it, I receive the following error message:
"The operation can't be completed because the original item for "DISKNAME" can't be found."
The usb hard drive is readable and works fine if plugged directly into my MBP.  I have tried everything I can find in past forums to correct this problem.  I've repaired the usb hd while plugged directly into my MBP.  I've repaired permissions on my MBP HD.  I've disabled and re-enabled file sharing under "Disks" using the Airport Utility.  I'm ready to resort to voodoo.
Short of that, does anyone have any suggestions for how to correct this problem and restore wireless access to this drive?
    Thanks!
    Bailey

Thanks for help. I upgraded to OS X as you all suggested and was able to use AirPort Extreme utility to access web and get the green light. I had to determine how I was connected to internet by DSL provider (PPOE) and needed to insert my mail ID (e-mail address) and my mail password. I was able to verify the PPOE connection by imputting the IP address of the Linksys connection on my browser and going to their web page.
It took me a while but Apple support was available as it was a new purchase and they talked me thru.
