New Airport Extreme restarts/disconnects/boots all devices if specific MacBook joins wirelessly...?

Preface:
This is my second new AEBS in two weeks. They've both had this issue (which seems unique from the other disconnect postings I've found), so it's not AEBS hardware. I've also had a perfectly functioning Airport Express in the exact same configuration (sans dual-band of course) for the last two years, so interference and the like (for which I did test and troubleshoot) also seems unlikely. I have a 2008 Macbook, a mid 2009 Macbook Pro, a Windows 7 PC, an iPhone 4, and iPhone 4s, and an iPad on the network.
Issue:
After setting up my AEBS, I kept getting knocked off at random, frequent intervals. It would disappear from all my devices simultaneously--no network connections and nothing showing in Airport Utility. I tweaked every setting imaginable five times over. No luck. Looked into networks around me and fiddled with channels etc. No luck. At first, I would have to go unplug and replug the AEBS to get it to show back up. Eventually I managed to get it to where it would just "reset" more or less and come back on in about 30-45 seconds. The light on the router will blink green once, and then two seconds later go solid amber for about 10-15 seconds, and then blink amber for another 10 or so. Then it's back like nothing happened.
I think that I finally narrowed it down today to what is triggering it more or less. I noticed it was fine with everything connected WITHOUT any security. When I added the WPA2 security back on, it was doing it soon after the older Macbook connected, right after "Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant 3c:d0:f8:8e:31:b5". I could connect the Macbook through ethernet and be fine. If it did connect without the issue, it would do it soon after when the router would run that "Installed unicast CCMP" process again in a mere matter of minutes.
I decided that maybe having old OSX Leopard wasn't working well, so I finally upgraded it to Snow Leopard to see if maybe it would help. No luck. Exact same issue. I disabled Airport on it, and since then I'm going on 5 hours of no issues, but why is this computer causing the AEBS to freak out when it worked 100% with my Airport Express for years???

Hi,
I have roughly the same issue.  I have a new 5th Generation (I had a 4th Generation that seemed to do the same thing) that will reboot for no apparant reason.  I have a 1st Generation Time Capsule as the main wireless access point, then a 2nd generation Extreme extending, and the 5th generation as another extension.  I also have an Express extending to the top floor.  All my other devices work great, but the new 5th generation will just reboot over and over.  Seems to be every 5 - 10 minutes.  I have it setup in the middle of my house, with some devices connected to it via ethernet cable.  I used to have the Express in that location connected to a switch for my devices, and never had any issues.  My log looks similar, basically nothing useful.

  • New Airport Extreme in Bridge mode -- some devices have no internet access

I just bought a new Airport Extreme as my old one which was probably 7 years old required restarting every day. My setup is as follows: DSL cable modem to Linksys Router (for a long set of convoluted reasons, I can't remove this layer) and then Airport Extreme. This is how I had it set up with my old one. The only difference is I recently started looking into using "Back to the Mac" on MobileMe and in order for it to work, I set my new Airport Extreme to Bridge mode due to dual NAT. I have an iMac, PC, MBP, MBA, iphone 4, AppleTV and ipad. All was working fine last night when I set it up. 24 hours later, for some odd reasons, I can't have my PC accessing the wireless network at the same time. If I did, it would knock my iMac off the network and says some other device is using the same IP address. For a while, only my iMac (my main computer) can access it and even my iphone can't. At this very moment, my iphone, imac and MBP all have access to the wireless network. My MBA and iPad has no internet connection. I've restarted Airport Extreme, Linksys, and modem more than once... If I switch back to "Use Public IP Address" instead of Bridge mode, everything works except for "Back to the Mac"... Help!

Hey Bob, Thanks...I have already repeated that multiple times yesterday and today but to no avail. I tried to get into the Linksys router control panel but unfortunately we can't remember the username and password (the router is not mine). The make things even more complicated, the router is actually part of the internet package provided by the ISP and they use a PPPoE to log in. Theoretically, we could do a hard reset but the problem is the ISP will not release the PPPoE information unless we sign a long and complicated form saying we want to bypass their Linksys router. We can do that but this process will take days and weeks... Our ISP confirmed that the Linksys router is set to max out at 5 DHCP but we can only connect 3 machines at a time. They are coming out to take a look tomorrow but in the meantime I have reset the Airport Extreme to "Distribute a Public IP Address" mode which will allow access to all computers/devices. What's even more weird is that if I did the Bridge mode, it messes up the Linksys router's own network as well. We can't even just sign into that network... Any ideas why?

  • My New Airport Extreme keeps disconnecting from Xbox Live, Why??

I have just lately updated my wireless router to the New Airport Extreme and it has worked great for all be one of my systems. For some reason my Xbox360(1st gen) keeps disconnecting me from Xbox Live everytime i log-in.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but what I do know is that I didn't have this problem with my old Netgear router. And No I can't change back to my old router im just hoping that these an easy fix for this problem??
    Thank you!!

    Hey,
I'm using an Airport Express with my xbox and having the same problem. using the xbox 360 slim, 4GB with wifi. All my other devices are totally fine.
How did you solve the issue ?
pm me at [email protected] if you like. Thanks !

  • New Airport Extreme + Express. Will all run at 54Mbps?

    Hi,
I have some Express base stations in my house to stream music. If I buy the new Airport Extreme Station with 802.11n standard will all my network run at 802.11g?
Or it is possible to connect different devices at different speed?
For example: if I connect to my network an AppleTV, a core2duo 24'' iMac (802.11n) and a G4 powerbook (802.11g), will the iMac run at 802.11g, too?
    Thanks.

without actually using one it is hard to say for sure. Most wireless routers that i have used have an option to broadcast wireless B only, Wireless G only, or Both. I would assume that would also be the case with the Airport Extreme. The biggest downfall of the Extreme is not having 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports (only has 10/100)

Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB external hard drive.  I put a USB port on the base station, and the system recognizes my printer.  When I click on disks - it lists my printer, and when I click on Printers it lists my printer.  What do I need to do to get it to recognize the external drive?  BTW, the MacBook recognizes it, no problem.  I have erased it and reformatted it.  I am running the new Lion OS.  Any help is appreciated.

Yes, I saw a post on one of these threads about a powered USB hub so I ran over to Office Depot and picked one up.  I was finally able to see the HD in the Airport Utility.  Yay!

  • How do you set up airport extreme with a windstream all in one modem with the wireless router built in

I have a wireless network that I want to extend so there will be wifi coverage all over the whole house. I want to use the airport extreme to do so. so far all i can get to work is the airport making another network via a eithernet cable that is pluged into one of the ports on the windstream wireless router/moden (all in one you plug the phone line into this and it has the wireless built in) and the other end is in the WAN port of the airport. I guess the real question is do I need to change any settings on the windstream wireless router/modem to do so. Every time I select all the options to extend a network wirelessly I keep getting errors.

The Airport Extreme can not wirelessly extend a 3rd party router, it can only extend another Apple router. If you can somehow keep the two connected via ethernet, you can setup a roaming network. A roaming network is essentially "extending" your network by using an ethernet cable to bridge the two routers.

  • New Airport Extreme Base Station will only talk to one MacBook

Thanks for any help you can give.
I set up my new AEBS yesterday with my Core 2 Duo Macbook with the installer CD and the updater applied. It set up flawlessly, and once I deleted and reinstalled the USB printer that worked too.
My wife's Macbook Core Duo (no 802.11n capability) will not see the AEBS via Airport. The installer CD and the updater have been applied. When I plug the MacBook into the AEBS with an ethernet cable it works fine and connects to the internet. When I unplug it and run the Airport Utility for the AEBS, it does not find the AEBS. The older Macbook will still see the neighbor's wireless network (which is how she is connected today).
I know the AEBS is working because my Core 2 Duo Macbook is working fine. Why won't my other computer see it?
I have restarted the Macbook several times. I have removed power from the AEBS several times. The "closed network" checkbox in the Airport Utility is not checked (that is, it is not set to closed network). I have reset the AEBS with a paper clip. I have followed the troubleshooting guides in the enclosed booklet and on the Apple Support forum. I have chosen "Other" in the Internet Connect menu and manually typed in the network name and the correct password.
Any more ideas? I wonder if it has something to do with using the 802.11g link from the older Macbook in conjunction with the 802.11n link with the newer Macbook.
    Thanks again. Spongy II

Thanks for the ideas. The 802.11b/g compatible setting was correct and I should have written that in my original post.
The original channel was 11. I manually changed it to 6 and, lo and behold, the older MacBook could see the network.
Thanks for the ideas and the help.

  • Airport Extreme connects to Epson all in one printer, scanner doesn't work

I got a new Airport Extreme to connect my all-in-one printer, copier, scanner Epson CX8400. Connecting the printer feature to my MacBook Pro and my HP laptop was very easy, however can't get the scanning feature to work. Has anyone had this same issue? Do you know how to solve it other than plugging the USB cable directly to the computer? thanks!

    Hi Carlos9912,
Does the Epson CX8400 support scanning over WiFi/Bonjour? I know my two HP Photosmart printers and my Epson I have do not support scanning over WiFi/Bonjour, despite the fact that they support printing functionality.

The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4.  Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly

  • New Airport Extreme, internet on some devices, not others

    To All:
I bought one of the new Airport Extreme routers (the verticle model) for my home wifi system yesterday and installed it.  Although the performance is obviously much better on those devices that have been able to connect to the system, I have only been able to consistently connect with three out of the eight devices in our home.  All of the devices "see" the network, they just can't connect.  When you try to connect the device seems to go into a feedback loop where you can see it transmitting and receiving information, but nothing happens. A census of the devices is as follows:
1 2007 Mac running Mtn. Lion ver: 10.8.4 (connects, that is what I am writing this on)
2 ipads both running system 6.1.3 (10b329), (one connects, the other doesn't--the one that connects I upgraded the system software yesterday)
2 iPhones, 1 iphone 4s running 6.1.3 (10b329) which connects, 1 iphone 3 (unknown software) which does not connect
2 Windows laptops, 1 running Windows 7, 1 running Windows 8, neither connect
    Xbox, doesn't connect
The system that I have is a modem that comes off of a high speed wireless (WiMax type of service) antenna that directly connects to the Airport router which is on the main floor of the house with very good signal strength throughout our home.
I have searched many message boards and tried all of the "wifi tricks" for getting the system to run including:
Disconnecting and rebooting devices in sequence
Renaming network and establishing new passwords
    Renewing the DHCP lease
Upgrading OS software to current versions (this computer and one iPad
Can anyone help me with this problem?

  • I just purchased a new airport extreme 802.11ac I set it up and runs fine when i put my mac to sleep i come back and it can not find my airport i have to restart

I PURCHASED THE NEW AIRPORT EXTREME 802.11AC I SET IT UP AFTER I PUT MY MAC TO SLEEP I COME BACK AND IT SAYS CAN NOT FIND AIRPORT EXTREME I HAVE TO RESTART AND IT FINDS IT.

Try the following, in order, until (hopefully) resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
In the windows on the left side: Select login for Keychains and "All Items" for Category.
Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi tab
Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    Go to /Library/Preferences
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to the desktop.
Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder back to it's original location.)

Does the new Airport Extreme allow "guest network" setup across all my Airports on my network? I have 1 Airport as a router and 6 others as WAP's (bridged)

I assume that all of your WAPs are hard wired on the network.
If.....all of your WAPs are simultaneous dual band Apple AirPort devices like an AirPort Extreme or new AirPort Express.....and.....you have firmware version 7.6.3 (now 7.6.4) installed on all the AirPorts.....and.....you use AirPort Utility 6.3.1 to configure the devices......in theory.....it should work.
I don't have 6 WAPs, but I do have 3 and the network works perfectly allowing extension of both the "main" and "guest" network.

  • After we installed a new airport extreme, the imac running snow leopard displays black box msgs saying to hold down the power button and or the reset button and then restart your computer. Can anyone provide info that can help resolve this issue?

Experiencing similar issues on both imac and power book: after replacing an original airport extreme with a new airport extreme both computers display a black box msgs that reads: "...turn off your computer by holding down the power button and or the reset button for a few seconds and then restart your computer."...
one of the printers are usb'd to the imac. The printer is not "seeing" the imac nor will it print wireless from the powerbook which was the norm prior to the upgrade on the airport extreme.
Upon restart, the imac does not "see" the wireless keyboard or the mouse until it is "found" again.
At this time the imac or the powerbook can get on line.

It sounds like your computer is getting Kernel Panics. Please look at About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages and if the message seen on your display is like the one in the link then you have confirmed you had a KP. KP's can be tough to track down because they can be caused by software or hardware. The first place to start is to post the complete crash log so we can look at it, often there are clues in the log.
