New Airport extreme station and Powerbooks. No go

Got a new AE (802.11n) FW 7.1 and got 4 Macintel computers on it, that works. But then I got 2 Powerbooks that sometimes sees the network but when connected only stay connected for maximum 30 min. And then you cant connect for about one hour.
Powerbooks have 10.4.9 and 802.11g-cards.
The network uses WPA , channel 2, and all got public IP-adresses. The station also acts as a router and DHCP-server.
Its connected from the modem > HP switch > ethernet network > Airport station > computer.
Anyone?

Neptune2000,
If your system works great for you that's the way it
should be. I'm a KISS type person and I don't
understand the need for the extra hardware if you
don't need it. Or do you need it?
It appears that acke's system is all Apple no PC
based computers.
It's also a different evironment - European based.
Just curious.
What I meant "that's the setup I have" I meant this:
Verizon DSL Modem --> AEBSn --> (AEBSn extended) --> Powerbook G4, Apple TV, Toshiba notebook
I meant I do niot have the extra hardware, which seems only there to add complexity.

  • Internet problem with New Airport Extreme base and new Macbook Pro

So I bought a Airport Extreme base station with my new Macbook pro.
My desktop system uses a DSL modem which is connected to my computer via an ethernet cable. It works flawless. I can also unhook the hard ethernet connection from the desktop and connect it to the Macbook Pro with no problems.
I then connected the ethernet cable from the DSL router to the WAN port on the Airport Base.
I have no problem gettiing the Macbook pro to set itself up on the Airport Network. I can NOT, though, access the internet. I even tried to type in the IP address for the DSL modem while connected to Airport base and can not connect to modem. Does anyone have any advice? Is there a bridging function in the Airport Base that has to be activated?
Another question. If I replace my current DSL Router with a wireless router, do I even need the airport base if all I want to do it connect to the internet with the laptop?
    Thanks,
    Danny

Make sure you perform a complete power recycle when switching network components.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the DSL modem & AEBS. (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the DSL modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, and your DSL ISP requires PPPoE for connectivity, you will need to set that up on your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as follows:
Connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, check these settings:
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
    - Account Name: <ISP account name>
    - Change password: <ISP password>
    - Always stay connected (checked)
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
Another question. If I replace my current DSL Router with a wireless router, do I even need the airport base if all I want to do it connect to the internet with the laptop?
No, the AEBS will no longer be required.

  • Installed my new Airport extreme and try to link it to airport express  but the wifi still very slow

I installed my new Airport extreme today and try to link it to my airport express to expend my wifi coverage to my second floor  but the wifi si very slow on second florr not better then without express? what can I do??

    Hi Francois
Any wired connection or WiFi network extension (using your AirPort Express) with your second floor will make your network signal stronger but not necessarly faster.  If your WiFi signal is so poor that internet connection keeps dropping, it will make a speed difference.  Otherwise the only difference you'll notice is that the range of the wireless network has increased.
You say "wifi is very slow on the second floor".  Do you mean that the internet is slow?  Is it very fast on the first floor?
Try checking your internet connection speed on a laptop on each floor:
    speedtest.net
and press "begin test recommended server".
The download speed should approximate your ISP contracted speed.  Upload speed will be a fraction of this.  Wifi will be slower but unless you have a super-fast internet connection, you probably shouldn't notice it.

  • New Airport Extreme + Express. Will all run at 54Mbps?

    Hi,
I have some Express base stations in my house to stream music. If I buy the new Airport Extreme Station with 802.11n standard will all my network run at 802.11g?
Or it is possible to connect different devices at different speed?
For example: if I connect to my network an AppleTV, a core2duo 24'' iMac (802.11n) and a G4 powerbook (802.11g), will the iMac run at 802.11g, too?
    Thanks.

without actually using one it is hard to say for sure. Most wireless routers that i have used have an option to broadcast wireless B only, Wireless G only, or Both. I would assume that would also be the case with the Airport Extreme. The biggest downfall of the Extreme is not having 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports (only has 10/100)

  • Airport Extreme n and airport express ...  No security ???

I have a new Airport Extreme N and two of the Airport Express ones, both using the 6.3 firmware. I can configure everything okay, all airports can be found and connected together.
My problem is that the network is open and anyone can join it ... The Extreme is configured to use WPA2 Personal but neither of the express ones are shown as using any encryption ... If I try to encrypt either of them they dissappear and I can't play my music remotely or find them in the utility.
I've tried the post that suggests removing the encryption on the extreme and then enabling the express, before finally enabling the extreme again. it didn't work ...
Any ideas what I'm doing so wrong ???

Right ... went to the Genius Bar who kind of pointed me in the right direction ... They told me however to use the old setup software ... This works fine with the express but not the extreme ... So basically use the new software.
My problem was cause by choosing the wrong option when setting up I started off aright by wetting up the extreme first with encrption enabled I was adding my express to the existing network but then choosing the next option that mentions Airtunes when I should have choosen the 'extend my network' option. This still allows you to use Airtune but doesn't say that ... The wizard then asks you to point to the base station and put in the password and then poblem solved ....... thanks for all you help ... and hope this helps someone else ..

In order to set up and install the new AirPort Extreme:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?
Yes, if you set up the new AirPort Extreme using the guidelines above. The 10.6.8 Mac will be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme, but it will not be able to make any configuration changes.
Only the devices listed above can be used to set up and make any changes to the new AirPort.

  • New airport extreme card is not detected

I brought a new airport extreme card and installed as instructed but my computer is not detecting it at all. Im new to using a Mac, so please can someone let me know what I'm doing wrong? If you need more info please ask.
    emac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

this is definately the correct card...
How do you know? To identify which eMac you have, you can use KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model. Then you will be able to determine if you need the AirPort card or AirPort Extreme card.
What kind of keyboard are you using?
The command key probably has an Apple symbol.
Here are some other symbols for those keys:

  • My LAN ports don't work on new AirPort Extreme

I just bought a new AirPort Extreme ac and for some reason my LAN ports don't work. Wireless works fine, even extended by an older version of AirPort Extreme. I tried to reset the AirPort, but it didn't help. Any help appreciated.

Defective product that needs to be exchanged, assuming you have checked Ethernet cables, etc.  We have seen a few similar posts, but usually with WAN port issues.

  • How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme? My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured" and my AirPort tool on my PC will not permit me to add my new Airport Extreme network (no network names to choose from)

How to connect old aiport express to my new Airport Extreme?
I have a PC running with Win7 and just replaced my Jensen With a brand New Airport Extreme.
I have set up the Airport Extreme to the internet, Iphones and Ipads and it work as it should.
I have downloaded latest Version of Airport tool on my PC. In addition i have downloaded the airport tool for Ipad.
I have reset one of my airport Express and it now shows up both on the Ipad and on the PC airport tool.
My Ipad says "base station e5713b cannot be configured."
I have wired the airport Express to my Ethernet to be able to "see it" on my Airport tool.
My AirPort tool on the PC will not permit me to add the airport Express to my new Airport Extreme network (no network names on the drop-down list to choose from). I wished for an easy set-up, but nothing seems to be plug and play as the Commercial says.. can you please help me?

    Hi
    Thanks for Swift reply.
Yep - I in fact have two A1088 and one A1264
I actually bought the new router because the Jensen
router always lost connection to the Airport Express after some hours or days. I
always needed to restart my Jensen to play music and that was driving my wife
mad. The hope was that the Extreme should fix this. Both A1088 have been set up
to only stream music to two of my stereo amplifiers from my PC’s Itunes library.
    Are the A1088 now useless?
The A1264 has been set up to feed internet into a Denon Reciever that needed Ethernet cable.
    Please advise
    Regards

  • I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

I have an 2tb time capsule 802.11n Wi-Fi base station can I use this as an external hard drive and use a new airport extreme  802.11ac Wi-Fi for my wifi?

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

  • If i purchase a new airport base station can I use my old airport extreme 802.11n (3rd Gen) as both an extender of my wife for multiple iphones and as a router?

I operate an old airport extreme base station 802.11n (3rd gen).
There are 4 iphone5's and 1 iphone4 on my network along with 2 laptops running 10.6.8 and 10.7 respectively as well as two desktops with the same configurations as the laptops.
I get a sense that the iphones may/will be useless the new airport.
Can I use the old base station (operating as an extender/bridge/router) so that older equipment will operate in the short term until they are upgraded?
    Thank you.

I get a sense that the iphones may/will be useless the new airport
They will work fine with a new AirPort base station. You can use an iPhone or iPad to set up and configure the new base station. If you want to use a Mac to set up and configure the new AirPort, it will need to have at least Lion 10.7.5 installed. Mountain Lion 10.8 or Mavericks 10.9 could be used as well.
Can I use the old base station (operating as an extender/bridge/router) so that older equipment will operate in the short term until they are upgraded?
You can use the older AirPort base station to extend the wireless network. No updates will be needed to your iPhones or Macs.

  • I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Why no DSL and  no cable respectively on new AirPort Extreme Base Station?

    Hi,
I just saw the new APE Base Station, and I wondered about the fact, that it doesn't come with an ADSL2+- (for Europe) or cable-modem embedded, and being an full-featured router. I'd like to replace my adsl-router with the APE, but there would one more thing hang around here. Even the fact of missing 1000T isn't really good for me. Maybe next APE Base Station has some of the features?

Should I have set both networks with the same name, which I guess would alllow the various clients to default to whatever is the fastest?
    Is that how it works?
Not the fastest, the best quality connection, which is a combination of signal strength, speed, low noise and who knows what else the Apple engineers have come up with for the formula.
The default setting for the Extreme is dual band, using the same wireless network name for both bands. This is the setting that most users should use because their device(s) will automatically connect to the best signal available depending on their capability and location.
You can "force" a connection to 5 GHz by assigning a different name to that band, but this does not assure you that you are making a better connection. It might well be worse.
Why? The upside is that 5 Ghz is capable of faster speeds. The downside is that you always must give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, the signals are not nearly as strong as 2.4 GHz signals, so the 5 Ghz signals are going to be absorbed much more quickly by any walls, ceilings, or other obstructions.
To really get good perfomance on 5 GHz, you almost have to have a line-of-sight relationship between the router and the computer. So, 5 Ghz works well if you are relatively close to the router and you have a clear shot at the Extreme. Move your laptop down the hall and around the corner and chances are, the 2.4 GHz signal is stronger (and possibly faster) at that location.

  • New Airport Extreme: no LAN lights, base station not found

I just brought home a new Airport Extreme base station 802.11n to replace a Linksys router which I used without too much trouble (it used to boot me off occasionally, which was annoying). I want to connect to my DSL internet using an ethernet cable. There's also a PC and a Mac in the house that are wireless. However, the Airport Utility doesn't see the AEBS, I've got the classic flashing amber light, and at the back, the WAN light shows a connection to my DSL modem, but I've got no lights on my LAN ports. (I have seen them light up very briefly but they never stay on.)
I've tried resetting the modem and the base station countless times. I've reconfigured using different ethernet cables. I've disconnected the base station for over 30 minutes before powering up again. I can get a connection when I connect my modem directly to the mini. I've tried using different LAN ports to connect the base station to the computer.
What should I try next? It's a really simple setup, and all I'm trying to do is to connect to the internet.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I know you have tried a series of resets, but please try the following with your Mac Mini connected directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN ports of your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), and the AEBSn's WAN port connected (via Ethernet) to the DSL modem.
Try the following, in order, until the Mac Mini is able to access the Internet:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • New Airport Extreme and Older Airport Express No Longer Works

I recently bought a new Airport Extreme base station.   Now the Airport Express that I've had for a number of years no longer works, flashing amber.  It shows up under the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, but when I try to follow Apple's instructions for configuring it, I get this message:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
I then tried downloading and installing Airport Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.4) and received this error message: "AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
I then turned to my IPad, which also detected the Airport Express under Wi-Fi Settings but returned a message when I tried to set it up that the Airport Express couldn't be set by this software and re-directed me to the support web site.
While we have an Apple TV unit, I used the Airport Express to stream music directly to our stereo from my MacBook and IPad and Phone and would love to be able to continue to do so.  Has anyone found a workaround for this problem, or will I be forced to buy a new Airport Express as well?
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Steve

I then tried downloading and installing Airport Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.4) and received this error message: "AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
I just tried this on my MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 and had no problems downloading and installing AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will not install on a Mac running Lion....only Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Can you check again to make sure that you are trying to install 5.6 and not 5.6.1?
