New Airport gigabit n constantly crashing!

Hello,
My brand new Airport Gigabit Ethernet 11n router is CONSTANTLY (sometimes within 10min, sometimes it takes a few hours) crashing. It doesn't seem to have any real pattern to it either, sometimes when I get home and nothing was using the internet/network the network will just be down. Other times when we are doing more intense things, such as streaming movies from the upstairs computer to the TV it will go down. Xbox live will even kill it by itself... Also, the airdisk has been almost useless since i got it. It hasn't worked reliably on my 15in MBP (wireless g), however, on our PC (Gigabit hardwired) it works fine. The crashing has picked up as of late, but I don't think it was related to the 7.2.1 firmware update.
I have tried resetting it back to factory defaults, but it was a no go... And when it is in its "crashed" state, it does not show up in Airport utility and it does not respond to the reset button. Only unplugging and plugging it back in will get it to "work" for a while.
Thanks for any help,
Jim

Hey yoink,
I'm on videotron too... north shore Montreal. Mine has crashed about 3 times today? did this start recently for you? my AEBS had been perfect till now. could it be a problem with videotron?

Hi there!
My Gigabit AEBS was purchased late Monday afternoon (Oct. 1st). It worked fine for a couple of hours (possible not fine but nothing happened in those hours) until I upgraded to 7.2.1 (from 7.2 which it ships with.)
Yesterday, after posting here, I called Apple and they told me to take it back for an exchange immediately. Which I did.
The new one does occasionally "disappear" (happened twice so far - once under heavy file transfer activity) but unlike the one that was returned this one comes back online within 30 seconds or so - the other one had to be unplugged to regain connectivity on both wired and wireless clients.
It's still possible that it's videotron though. I'm just not sure how to explore the possibility a little more.

  • Just upgraded to LR2. I love the new features but LR constantly crashes

Help please. I just upgraded from 1.4 to 2.4. I think the new features are superb but all too frequently while I am in the Develop Module, LR freezes and the only thing I can do is torce it to close from Task Manager. What should I check? I never had a single system crash with LR 1.x.

Best I can come with is to point you the trouble shooting guide http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404099.html
BTW: if using nVidia card you may find that switching performance modes helps. Unfortunately, I can't recall how or to what, but one the least obvious modes.

  • How will the new Airport Gigabit improve on the old one?

I need to know if I will get a speed benefit and specifically what and when. Is it worth it for me to get the new one? I've only have the old one for several months. Thanks people !!

noch 'ne Frage? Ewiger Student bin ich auch.
There is no getting around the bottleneck, the fastest possible link between any two devices on a network is the speed of the slowest link. Now, with compression and stuff you can achieve higher effective speeds, but it's pretty much a 'weakest link' affair.
As for Network Utility, mine reports right now: "Link Speed 130 Mb", which is just short for Mbs. Does yours report differently? An aside: when I consider this means that up to 130,000,000 bits of information are transferring between my computer and the base station EVERY SECOND, I never cease to be amazed.
270 Mbs is the theoretical maximum, maybe even possible under ideal conditions, but like many things in the world of computers, a bit misleading. For example: my laptop has a 120 GB hard drive. A 'get info' on the drive reveals a formatted capacity of 111.47 GB, some of which is overhead for the drive to manage its file directory, but the rest of which is often blamed on the fact that a kilobyte is actually 1024 bytes, thus a megabyte is 1024^2 bytes, and so on. Kind of marketing baloney, but it's an industry practice. And in wireless, the total bandwidth is divided among all the clients connected, whereas wired clients running Fast Ethernet through a switch can each get the full speed (of course, there are other things to slow it down).
Hope I am not making it more confusing.

  • Safari is Constantly Crashing - NEW CASE? Help!

    Dear Fellow MAC Users,
I need your help for solving my problem about Safari. It constantly crashes and I don't have any idea what could be causing the problem (I posted the report below).
I came across the problem posted by LeonardoGolden that has been answered by Hawaiian_Starman; I think we have the same problem but that was like 4 to 5 years ago.
I hope someone can help me figure out the problem. Help! MAC experts! =)
Waiting patiently for your response. Thank you.
    Regards,
    HappYFrancis

  • Gigabit ATA (IDE) NAS vs USB 2 SATA+new Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I'd like to share iTunes, iPhoto and video (HDV) content between two iMacs (G5s) on a Gigabit ethernet LAN. Would also like to stream DivX and VIDEO_TS files down to a media player via Gigabit ethernet. (Looking at TViX HD M-4000P media player as Apple TV won't do DivX and VIDEO_TS)
So I'm looking for a shared disk option.
Would a Gigabit ATA (IDE) based NAS provide read/write of this type of content faster than an USB 2.0 SATA based external disk plugged into the new Airport Extreme ?
I'm considering the new LaCie Ethernet Big Disk 1TB as the gigabit NAS.
    Thanks for your help,
    Tony

The short answer, Yes. The choke point for the USB 2.0 SATA drive is the Airport Extreme. Because the APE does not have Gigabit connectivity your link to the USB 2.0 drive is limited to a max of 100Mbps via cable or 200Mbps (real world N) via wireless. If you have the iMacs, Gigabit NAS device and the device you're streaming to all hooked to a Gigabit network that would be faster. I would check the specs carefully on the media players and assure that they are Gigabit (also noted as 1000Tx or 802.3ab).
This is my biggest complaint with the APE is no gigabit.

  • New Airport Express Crashes my Network

Hello.  I have a 3TB Time Capsule, newest generation, and tried to extend the network with the newest generation airport express.  The time capsule is connected via ethernet cable to my U-Verse modem.  The U-verse model has wifi broadcasting turned off--my time capsule is my only wireless network.  When i set up the airport express, i properly told it to extend the network created by my time capsule.  Both devices have green lights for about a minute and then the network crashes--all of my devices lose connectivity and the only way to restore connectivity is to: (1) unplug the express and (2) restart the time capsule.  I've done hard-resets on both routers multiple times to no avail--my network keeps crashing.  Both routers are running the latest software versions.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am probably going to return the express tomorrow if I can't get this figured out.  I've done this in the past with older generation airports, I honestly don't know why this isn't working.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The new Express is not really on your network but is able to communicate with the laptop using Bonjour. Here's Apple's explanation for the flashing amber:
Startup is complete, but AirPort Express didn't get an IP connection. Depending on your setup, it may mean AirPort Express is out of network range, unplugged from Ethernet, lacks a path to the Internet (or local router), or that there's an issue with your Internet service provider.
Does your PowerMac G5 have an Airport card? If it does then it isn't associated with the new Airport. Both should be listed under the Airport menu but only one has a checkmark. If it doesn't have a card it won't be able to see the new Airport until you configure the new Airport as an extension of the first wireless network, called WDS or Wireless Distribution System.

Any solutions? I just got my 5th generation Airport Extreme, set it up on my MacBook (OS X.5.8), and my PPC iMac (OSX.4.9) is having Kernal panic attacks whenever I try & join the new network. I;m now back on my old Airport settings and it doesn;t crash. Clearly it's the new Airport.

Brand new iPad mini 32GB LTE (Verizon) purchased on 1/7/13 is constantly crashing while on Safari and other apps. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do besides restoring it and rebooting it as I have already done so. Should i exchange it at the apple store for a new one? Any suggestions? Im still under the 14 day return policy.

Returning it is a way to go, obviously. Unless that's quick and convenient enough for you, you may try resetting it to factory settings first under Settings -> General -> Reset.
A new setup and sync (not restoring, to avoid the cause of the problem coming over again) might fix it once and forever.

  • I need help with new flash player constantly crashing

Ever since updating the flash player it is constantly crashing. I have updated firefox also which constantly crashes. Firefox is pointing the finger at the flash player..... I need someone who will work with me step by step as i am not a computer tech. The two websites i visit that the flash player crashes on is www.myspace.com while playing mobsters and mafia wars, and www.smallworlds.com which is a 3d interactive " chat room ". I have tried removing the flash player and going with an older version, but it continues to kick me to the updated version...Please help!

Hi, thanks for your Flash file info. You have the SWFlash.ocx that is old. Right click on that one and Remove/Delete it.
Your SWF plug-in is correct as well as the remainder of your Flash files. The SWFlash.ocx that needs removed is conflicting.
The Windows Firewall should be used. Now I see that you have not updated to the Windows XP Service Pack 3, which is the latest. I would recommend that you do that. Many improvements and security issues are included in that. You can go to the Microsoft site for that.
After you do that, Microsoft has the Microsoft Security Essentials which is a free program and has the Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware features. It does not include a Firewall nor are there any browser add ons that would conflict with your browser, other add ons or Flash Player.
I'm not sure of the system requirements for the MSE, but check. You may need the updated Service Pack first. Before you Install the MSE tho, make sure no other anti-virus is still Installed. The one you mentioned needs Uninstalled and you need to check if they have an Uninstaller and do that first.
Whether you do any of what I suggested or not, you need to Remove that SWFlash.ocx. I would reboot(restart) your computer afterwards.
P.S. Firefox has updated to 3.6.8 and you can do that anytime.
    Thanks,

  • New Airport Extreme802.11n &Very Odd Network&Computer Issues

    Hi,
We Replaced a D-Link DGL4300 802.11G and a Airport Express M9470LL/A with the most current Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11N 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz Dual Band and a Airport Express 802.11N (to use with a Shared USB HP1022 Laser Jet Printer. I have contacted Apple Tech Support once regarding setup and mentioned this other ? strange issue(s)
We have broadband cable that goes to a Motorola SB5101(meets ISP specs) then Ethernet cable
from Cable Modem to Wan Port on Airport Extreme. We have multiple computers all with wireless capability 1) Imac 800mhz 874 mb ram 802.11bAirport Card 2) eMac 1.0 Ghz 1gb ram Airport Extreme 802.11bWireless Card
    3) eMac 1.25 Ghz 1.0gb ram and a Airport Extreme 802.11bWireless Card* all running OSX Panther 10.3.9 *and each with 802.11B wireless cards 4) Macbook Pro bought Dec 2009 running Snow Leopard 4gb ram and 250gb HDand 802.11n wireless card 5) HP Tower xw4550 running Win XP Pro SP3 4gb ram 500GB HD and a 802.11G wireless card 6) Dell Mini Net Book running Win XP Home SP3 1ghz 1gb ram 150 GB HD and a
    802.11n wireless card.
At first tried setting up the Airport Extreme with the Dell Mini as it met specs and (as of Yesterday) the Mac Book Pro is with one of our children at college but was able to set up setting up the Airport Utility and Hardware for both Peripheral Devices with the Mac Book Pro.
Then things got odd. All the computers were online (as well as two wireless "Live" capable gaming systems XBox360 and Sony PS3 , I did not check my eMac until the next day
and when I woke it from sleep (or started it) I got "You need to restart your computer"
? Kernel Panic , I ran Disk Utility, Tech Tool Deluxe, Apple Hardware Test and even Applejack. no change and while permissions were repaired Tech Tool Deluxe and The Apple Hardware Test showed no faults with anything, Tried PRAM. restart etc, then we had the other eMac 1.0ghz which has been unused since the Mac Book Pro arrived as a gift, Plugged it in , started it up, and got online, no black screen, even checked and responded to email, then restarted the (2nd eMac 1.0ghz) and the "You need to restart your computer screen came up!) once seems oh maybe, possibly its crashed, or dying out
but two side by side, No Way! , so we then isolated electrical outlets, to the extent with a 100 foot extension cord outside on our back breezeway, same thing. We even went and bought a new battery and tried it in both , no change, * Was able to shut off the airport card in safe mode, restarted and it functioned as a normal computer with airport extreme card off
*same with the 1.0ghz emac airport card off and restart and functions as a computer but no online access. We then moved one close to the Airport Extreme and hooked up by ethernet and changed the settings and Bingo no Kernel Panic Like screen and can get online, tried the other same thing! So currently the two eMacs sit side by side and we bought a long ethernet cord and it works on the table where it originally was,
I did mention this to the Apple Technician that called from Apple regarding a setup issue (as have 90 days telephone support) and he said *That there have been reports of where there are with a Guest Network (we had one set up and He had us remove it as He asked if we really needed it and I said no AND also with networks with computers with wireless cards 802.11b
and 802.11g computers on a network with the802.11n computers and a 802.11n Airport Extreme, he could not explain it any further, he suggested a possible 3rd party software incompatibilty : recent download (but have not done any on the 1.25ghz eMac and the 1.0ghz has been shut
off since Dec 2009. I am baffled , my Wife and I were seriously considering buying a new Imac to replace the 1.25ghz after the Black screen showed up, but when the other one did the same, and did the trouble shooting and then the ethernet connect we saved ourselves a lot of money (t would be nice to have a new Imac but $$ is not there)
and in the past week now (could be our ISP) our Internet connection has dropped off 4 times usually for 30-45 minutes but Friday 8-20-10 it was over 3 hours (yet our Cable TV came in) I will contact our ISP who handles both the broadband about the outages
and our cable TV has been fuzzy -grainy at times, I called Them Friday and their were no outages in our area (system wide) Now though (except with Win XP) that is our access to the Airport Extreme and Utility (it blinks orange off and on when the internet is down) the Airport Express has stayed green each time. I will contact Apple also as ?
is it the Airport Extreme (but its intermittent) channels are set to automatically if thats helpful data rather than set to a specific channel, its fairly rural where we live
I thought of buying Tiger but saw the extreme prices and I called Apple per a recent Apple Thread they did not have Tiger Retail(nor did I expect then to) but after discussing
the Emacs they said why pay so much for Tiger (and a lot are used) they said and went over both eMacs specs and I checked in detail online and called them back as it was in a "card hold" and bought Leopard 10.5.6 (as min of 512 ram, DVD drive (have a combo -drive) and a Power PCG4 which both are and I am now getting unused (non System) data off the eMac and backing it up as well and its job will be to be able to access the Airport Utility (Apple OSX Leopard 10.5.6 was $129.00 plus tax free shipping and it arrived yesterday so if settings need changed can do that (with Win XP the Airport Utility
was so different and after about 4 hours and no progress I stopped and switched to he Laptop the next day!
Has anyone experienced anything like this, I read up on both peripherals before buying and called as well to the Apple Online Store to make sure we could 1) set it up and 2) all computers specs were met to be able to a)use the network for online use and b)as well as shared printing from any and all computers and they do meet the specifications
    * one last item , my Wife's Imac is also on via Ethernet, It asked for a WEP password and that was not a option in the Airport Utility set up ,only WPA-WPA2 Personal password-Security configuration
so She is not on wirelessly (though I know She has been as in the past, Her Imac was on a desk in the foyer ) That may have been with the 802.11b Apple Airport white dome and not the D-Link 802.11G router of which we had a lot of configuration issues
*I could be wrong and will read up on her specs via the Mac Tracker application or online
Many Thanks, Its so odd I did not want to leave out data etc but its a *long post and I apologize for that, I hope some one can send some light on this. On a positive avoided buying a new computer!
but makes no sense (at least to us)!

I too have a MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.6.6) and a PowerBook G4 (1.67 GHz, OS X 10.4.11) and an AirPort Extreme 802.11n. I configured the new AirPort Extreme Base Station N last week using the MacBook Pro and the PowerBook can no longer operate with AirPort on (Restart Computer message). A rep at the Genius Bar indicated that WPA2 encryption might interfere with the G4?? He recommended setting up WEP encryption, this is no longer an option using the AirPort setup assistant.
It would be very helpful to know how this original post was resolved. The G4 SHOULD be able to work with the AirPort Extreme 802.11n in theory, right??

  • New AirPort Extreme Problems

    Hello,
I just installed a the new AirPort Extreme connected to wired Ethernet as a Server for USB-Harddisks.
Unfortunatele, it seems to work very unstable. I want to use the connected disks with an iMac G5 and an MacMini Core Duo. Sometimes the Extreme does not appear in the Network list, sometimes it does but disappears after a while.
I got two updates (2007-1, 2007-2) on the Computer where I installed the disc that came with the AirPort Extreme. Is there any further step needed to actually upgrade the box or is it all done while "installing" the update?
    2)
As I right now use the box as a file server only, can I disable WLAN somehow? The setup wizzard is not very clear and the former Admin Utility does not work with the new box.
    3)
Is there a way to let the connected harddiscs sleep while no activity is going on? How to setup such details?
    Thanks for helping,
    Frank

The Windows AirPort Utility isn't constantly scanning for you network. Once it sees the network, it keeps it listed until you click the rescan button. If you were to click the rescan button when the network was not seen by your wireless card, I bet it would not show it then either. On the other hand, Windows itself is constant doing background scans. I've noticed with Windows, in general, networks come and go and you get those idiotic bubbles telling you so.

  • New Airport N network limited to 3.7mb/s - slow N performance

I recently purchased a new airport extreme and express to replace my older G equipment.
I have the extreme connected to my dsl internet and a few computers. The express is in a different room and is in wireless-bridge mode with a computer connected to it. So basically, I've got two rooms pretty far apart that I didn't want to run an ethernet cable between, so the express is acting as my internet bridge.
The extreme and express are the only wireless networking devices used and they are set to 802.11n only, 5ghz.
When I transfer a file between a computer connected to the extreme and a computer connected to the express, I get an average of 3.7mb/s (Wireless N should provide around 8-11mb/s).
    I've tried the following things:
    - I've transferred files through ethernet between the same computers (obtained 50mb/s)
    - Had the express in the same room as the extreme and still got 3.7mb/s
    - tried 2.4 ghz mode, g mode, robust networking on/off, wide channels on/off, security off, NAT off (on the extreme), and still got a max of only 3.7mb/s.
Either there's a setting I'm not seeing, or I'm starting to think that the WAN port of the express is limited to 3.7mb/s as it was primarily meant to be connected to an internet connection rather than a computer.
Anyone have any advice, or do you have a similar setup where you are getting more than 3.7mb/s between an express and an extreme?

This has been broken for a long time, I think. I have a similar setup, with two Airport Extremes (802.11n Fast Ethernet) each running 5GHz only on wide channels, one wired to the broadband and my network storage, the other wired to various bits of my entertainment system including a Mac Mini. They are only about 4 metres apart though there are some walls in between and for various reasons it's not practical to run cable without a lot of fuss.
I am using Airport firmware 7.1.1 and getting 9-10MB/sec between the two, which is great. I'm still using the old firmware because every update since then has dropped the network speed to the magic 3.7MB/sec.
When the Gigabit version of the AEBS came out I bought two to replace the old ones. The Gigabit removes one of the internal limitations of the Fast Ethernet, meaning that streaming from a single AEBS to say a Macbook is a bit faster, up to 12MB/sec over the same distance. But it has no effect on AEBS to AEBS transfers, which are still limited to around 3.7MB/sec.
Of course, the Gigabit AEBSs can't be downgraded to 7.1.1, so I sent them back to Apple. Luckily I'd kept the old Fast Ethernet versions, which are getting pretty old now but are still twice as fast as the newest hardware running the latest firmware.
I don't know what Apple have done to limit AEBS to AEBS speeds like that. It must be a firmware issue starting with 7.2. Maybe it was to improve reliability or something, but I'd rather have speed or at least the option.
If anyone has managed to get decent speeds between two AEBSs I'd love to hear about it, I'm pretty sure I've tried all the configurable options to no avail.

  • Argh! Trying to Replace Linksys with New Airport Extreme...

Been fighting with this for hours...about ready to take the new Airport Extreme back ...Here's the deal:
I currently have a very wired and wireless 2story home professinally set up with 2 Linksys devices as the primary network and a couple previous generation airport expresses as extenders.   Due to video, audio and other systems the primary router for the network/WAN closet out in the garage needs to remain on the primary Linksys (non wifi) router.  I want to replace the Linksys Wifi router (see below) that is puposely set up and has worked for several years as a double NAT config with the new Airport Extreme but i have tried duplicatiing the exact configs from the Linksys router and all the various ways you can use the Airport Express in DHCP/NAT and even in Bridge mode and it still wont work!  I've never considered Linksys software easier (and definately more flexible and informative) to use than Apple until this experience!  Very frustrating....  I'm being very explicit and using the typical Linksys config profiles below so as to hopefully help you translate this into specific configs i can wrangle into the Airport Extreme to make it work like the
    Current Primary Network:
Current WAN Router / + 24 Port Switched LAN Network (for wired ethernet access ports used throughout house) > Linksys BEFSX41 + Linksys 24 port Switch locted in a custom built data /video / audio closet in garage
    WAN IP:  DHCP
    LAN IP:  192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Current WiFI Network > Linksys WRT160Nv2 (currently conected to the 24port switch via a hardwired ethernet wall port upstairs in my office)
    Internet Connection Type: Static IP
    WAN IP:  192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP:  192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Per config notes from the network engineer who i worked with to build this network when i built the house
"this allows the 192.168.0.x wifi device to successfully route to the 192.168.1.x wired router (and vice versa)"
My goal is to replace the Linksys WRT160Nv2 with the new Airport Extreme (whose range and ability to reach both upsatirs and outside to the beach is MUCH better) and locate it DOWNSTAIRS and connect it in the same way as the Linksys (via an ethernet port in the living room) to the same switch / router in the data closet.
I have tried to set up the new Airport Extreme to replicate this config several different ways both bridged and not bridged (including telling it to ignore the double NAT warning) with the latest.   I am pretty sure non-bridged is the right way to do it but i seem to lack a config parameter to tell the Airport Extreme to replicate the equivalent of the WRT160Nv2 settings despite trating all the submenues and options on the airport extreme set up / Airport Utility App.  Do i have to telnet directly into the Airport Extreme config files to do this natively?  Help!
PS - no i cannot / will not put the Airport Extreme in to replace the primary Linksys router in the data closet - there is no way it will fit or that its wifi could penetrate the EMI and insulation of all the other electronics in the data closet out in the garage and get a good connection into the house

The trick on the airport extreme is to change the DHCP .. when you change the DHCP it changes the actual IP of the AE..
So go to the setup and open the dhcp, in the network options and you can select by arrow the first two octets and replace the third.
I just posted info on this in another post..
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5134560?tstart=30
Does this answer your question, as I am a bit unclear otherwise??
I have to say I do not like using double NAT.. it is becoming worse and worse as the amount of material on the internet that requires interactive connection increases.. you block so much by doing this.. double NAT is an issue .. not just ignore the warning.
There is no reason why you need double NAT.. you should have a single flat network. If you need to keep some things isolated from others the correct way to do it is vlan.. but you will need a better router than the old linksys to do it. And possibly a managed switch. Nowadays a managed 24 port gigabit switch is not a bad price at all.

  • Is a Happy Marriage Possible? New Airport Extreme & ADSL Modem/Router

Is a Happy Marriage Possible? New Airport Extreme & ADSL Modem/Router
    1. I’m writing from a rural town in Southern Nepal, very close to India. I’m planning to create a new WI-FI network at a small monastery here.  Ideally, we will have two parallel wireless networks: the first network produced by an ADSL router/modem and a second network produced by another router in “repeater” mode.
    2. Earlier, someone suggested that, when I post a question, I should provide as many details as possible about the situation here.  Forgive me if there is “too much information”.  I have to make a trip to the US to buy new networking equipment, so I very much want to get this right.  Once I return here, I’ll be pretty much stuck with whatever I get in the US.
    3. The future routers will live next to each other in an office and could be linked by a cable (if this is the best route to go).  We do not wish to “expand” the network (in the sense of making a larger WI-FI network), but rather wish to simply have two networks, hence one ADSL router/modem and one router with the “repeater” function (out-of-the-box without any jerry rigging).  Both WI-FI signals need to travel approximately 100 (largely unobstructed) feet.
    4. If my dreams come true, the second router would be an Apple Airport Extreme (AX).  An Apple router would be ideal because my experience with Apple routers is happy: they are easy to set up, reliable, and secure. Moreover, we use Apple computers and iOS devices here (and the new AX has the “ac” thing which will be preferable as we replace old machines with new ones).
    5. Yet, from reading posts and having my prior questions answered on this website, it may be that with an ADSL modem/router, all the ease and happiness of the Apple ecosystem is lost: while Apple routers seem to connect with each other easily, problems appear to arise when users try to inter-marry our non-Apple products with Apples.
    6. Our current, super-crappy 2wire 2701hg-t (ADSL modem/router) covers the 100-foot distance without a problem when it is working and there is Ethernet flowing to us.  Frequently, our connection is very bad, and I may be unfairly judging the 2wire 2701hg-t.  But, based on user reviews on the America Amazon.com, the 2wire 2701hg-t is pretty terrible: first it is simply old and second, among other problems, it seems to have a poor quality power supply unit.  I do observe that it frequently seems to be recycling from scratch as if it had turned off and restarted.  In any case, we are replacing it since it may be about 4 or 5 years old.
    7. In previous posts on this forum, “LaPastenague” responded to some of my earlier questions about AX and ADSL.  Among other things, he pointed out that (1) line-attenuation may be contributing to our poor connection and (2) we must choose a modem/router that is suitable for “long lines.”  I’ve looked at our current modem/router statistics page; however, there are no statistics for line-attenuation or noise.  (As you will see below, my strategy is to get the “better” modem/router that is suitable for long lines.)
    8. Concerning our ADSL service, these are the facts I’ve gleaned from looking at the current router’s configuration pages:
    Connection Type: PPPoE
Currently, the router is configured to use WPA-PSK security.
Connection Speed: Incoming: 1024 kbps & Outgoing: 509 kbps
(The following information may be unimportant at this time.)
    Broadband Link Diagnostics:
    DSL Synchronization: UP
    G.DMT Signal: UP
    PVC Connection: UP
    PPPoE Service: UP
    PPP Authentication: UP
    IP Connection: UP
    DNS Communication: UP
    9. The ISP (Nepal Telecom) doesn’t supply a modem/router; however, they do have a list of (at times ancient) hardware and hardware vendors:
    http://www.ntc.net.np/internet/adsl/adsl_vendersConf.php
    10. Concerning what equipment is available here, what I have observed is that generally the ADSL modem/routers for sale locally, and in the far-away capital Kathmandu, and in nearby India are often also available in the United States, but they are the cheaper, older models.  I will have to buy the new equipment in the US this year.  At a different institution nearby, they are using the TP-Link modem/router td-w89016 which they purchased locally, I believe.
    11. Based in part on LaPastenague’s earlier advice, I want to buy the TP-LINK TD-W8980 N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router (2.4GHz 300Mbps+5Ghz 300Mbps, IPv6 Compatible). This appears to be the most popular ADSL device on Amazon now.
Will this modem/router work EASILY with the Airport Extreme in the manner I’ve described?  That is, connecting the two with a cable and creating two WI-FI networks.
    12. Also, is it generally correct that the best way to connect them is with an Ethernet cable: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23759755#23759755
    13. In fact, does connecting them with a cable help alleviate some of the problems that can occur between the Apple device and the ADSL modem/router?
    14. If this will work, what “mode” will the AX device be in (again, in order to have two separate networks with separate passwords)?  I have heard of the “repeater”, “roaming” , and “bridge” modes.
    15.  Are there two levels of passwords which need to be considered?  Of course, there is the network and network passwords which we create here and which will be different.  But, does the Apple also have to have the ISP password like the principle ADSL modem/router?
    16. To set this up, what information do I need from the ISP (e.g., passwords, IPs…)?
I think there are a lot of good reasons to use an AX router. Of course, if it is just going to be very cumbersome then, we would be loosing one of the best parts of using Apple products.  So, whoever feels knowledgeable enough to reply to this post, please be sincere if you think it is better to avoid the Apple.   Apple can rest assured that I will buy other things from them!
In that case, I’d likely buy a second TP-Link device to create a second network:
TL-Wa801NP [AP Mode Multi-SSID Mode AP Client Mode Repeater Mode (WDS / Universal) AP+ Bridge mode (point-to-point / point to Multi-point)].
Thank you in advance. Long live Apple!

I am not sure if there are different interfaces but my 2wire does an excellent job with line info.
I get into this from browser.. using main IP.. in my case 10.0.0.138/MDC
In your case it should be whatever the IP of the 2wire is, followed by /mdc
    Give it a try.
As you can see it shows vendor and loads of info about the line.
I rate it the best domestic modem for line info.
A good modem actually albeit a lousy router.
MDC is the diagnostics and Management Console.
    3. You are not repeating.. you are simply setting up two routers which are interconnected, so one is dependent on the other.. ie one is your adsl modem router and that will take the main router function. Your second router is really not working as a router, but as wireless access point (and switch if you plug things in).
That is perfectly fine. You are not roaming in this case since both routers are running different wireless names and networks.. but they are actually using same IP range.. all devices are on the one IP network with two different wireless access points.
    4. If my dreams come true, the second router would be an Apple Airport Extreme (AX).
Apple router is fine for this. Easy to configure out of the box.
    5. The problem arises when you try and interconnect using  wireless extend or repeater.. you are not using wireless to extend, you are using ethernet. Wired has no issues.

It is a good choice.. It should be fine considering how poor your line is.. this modem is proving to have a couple of bugs.. it does not handle torrents well but I would suggest your system is not being used for that purpose. It has some port forwarding issues. Again you are probably not going to overload it.
    12. Also, is it generally correct that the best way to connect them is with an Ethernet cable: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23759755#23759755
    Absolutely best.. only decent method.
    14. If this will work, what “mode” will the AX device be in (again, in order to have two separate networks with separate passwords)?  I have heard of the “repeater”, “roaming” , and “bridge” modes.
Bridge. Although if it gives issues there is another method, although rather complex to setup.. not something to worry about now.
    15.  Are there two levels of passwords which need to be considered?  Of course, there is the network and network passwords which we create here and which will be different.  But, does the Apple also have to have the ISP password like the principle ADSL modem/router?
Only the adsl modem has the ISP authentication.. it is the box that does the link. The TC just piggy backs.
The passwords on the TC are for its Admin, wireless and disk access.
    16. To set this up, what information do I need from the ISP (e.g., passwords, IPs…)?
For ADSL you must have the PPPoE authentication username and password.
So, whoever feels knowledgeable enough to reply to this post, please be sincere if you think it is better to avoid the Apple.
hmmm.. I am biased because I see the issues not all the good stories..
The latest airport and Time Capsule seem to have a few pretty severe bugs.. if they happen to hit you, they are extremely hard to fix if you are in the middle of Nepal. And Apple service centre is a long long way away.
I cannot answer your question from the point of view of a person on the ground in remote area. If the economics of the purchase works for you, great. Go for it.
In terms of wireless coverage.. the Asus AC models or Netgear R7000 kill the Apple. Sorry but it is just fact.
    See reviews here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/113-5-ghz-dn-c
That is average.. if you look at the apple router in the worst location by changing the filters, it comes out worse again.
I cannot post the URL to our local forum here.. (apple doesn't allow it). But in testing with apple clients the asus still beat Apple router soundly.
Pure wireless range is not the only consideration.. but in a mixed environment and since the wireless on the 8980N is not too bad.. then buy Apple router for apple client devices makes good sense.
Maybe the older Gen5.. or two of them.. would do a better job.. with a bit more tested and known hardware.
One thing you do need to check.
Routers from every other brand allow you to select country. Any country from anywhere in the world. Apple routers do not.
If you buy an airport in North America it is coded to North America and offers just a few countries.. USA, Canada I suppose.. what else is North America??
You cannot change it to Nepal.
To get the one for Nepal you must buy the model that covers, South Asia I guess.. I am not sure which it is.
See what the license information is for wifi in Nepal as it might be very different to US and therefore illegal for you to run it in Nepal.
If only the whole world would just bow to America.. we could all follow the FCC regs..
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
This only applies to the Apple.. the TP-Link etc allows you to choose Nepal or correct country regulations for wifi.
Buying modems has one tricky bit.. that the actual adsl ATM channel is different in different parts of the world. No modem is usually impossible to setup but some can be difficult if it is pre-configured for US.. this is easy to overcome generally as you can download a firmware for another locality, so you can have local settings.
