New Apple Displays DVI Connnection Type

Does anyone know what DVI connection type are the new Apple displays equipped with? I know that it recieves digital signals, but can it recieve analog signals too? In other words, is the DVI connector DVI-D or DVI-I on the new displays?

Hi Ethan,
I'm not sure I understand exactly what you want to do, so I'll try another approach (hope it helps this time :))
A DVI-I socket (off the graphics card) provides digital and analogue output. The DVI-I plugs off the DVI Apple Displays (except the 30") physically fit this socket, but don't utilise any of the analogue output. These DVI-I plugs will also plug into a DVI-D socket.
A DVD-D socket provides digital output only. The DVD-D plugs that the 30" Apple Displays use will only fit this socket and will not connect properly to a DVI-I socket.
There are very few Mac graphics cards around at the moment that have the required DVI-D socket for the 30" Apple Display. The majority of them are Apple OEM.
You said:
"Like I was saying if it has a DVI-I input, it can receive analog signals using a VGA to DVI adapter."
Because it is going through an adaptor, it is not receiving analogue signals (as these signals have already been converted to digital). A VGA to DVI adaptor is a little complicated, with a hardware based translation of the analogue signal to digital being required - this can result in some loss of signal quality. This is why it (physically) is a box with an input cable and plug and an output cable and socket.
However, a DVI-I to VGA adaptor is much easier (because of the analogue component in DVI-I that you have mentioned). All this adaptor does is to pick up the analogue signal already there and ignore the rest. This is why it (physically) is just a cable with a DVI-I plug at one end and a VGA socket at the other end. These adaptors will not work with DVI-D sockets.
Some (non-Apple) LCD displays accept both digital and analogue input, but they do this through separate DVI-I and VGA plugs. When using VGA input, they utilise an internal converter to translate the analogue signal to digital. An LCD display has an absolute requirement that the video input that it eventually processes is digital. Only CRT monitors really use analogue.
If you want to use a 30" Apple Display, you need DVI-D output. If you want to use any of the other Apple DVI Displays, you can use DVI-I, DVI-D or DVI-I via a VGA to DVI-I adaptor.
Hope this is what you were after!
Cheers!
Karl

I have a new Apple Display Monitor with new Thunderbolt cable. I currently have a MacBook Pro with older Mini DVI port. Is there an adapter for going from TB to DVI?

No - you MUST have a Thunderbolt port on your Mac in order to work with the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

I would not waste time trying to troubleshoot the problem.  Since it is new, call Applecare with a warranty problem.  I had a similar problem with a new KB some time ago and it was replaced at no cost (shipping included).

  • Is the new 23" Display dvi i, dvi a, or dvi d ?

Is the new 23" Display dvi i, dvi a, or dvi d ?

    Forestman sez:
Is it my perception or is the new iMac really glossy and has a lot of glare
    I sez:
Well, since you ask, I'd have to say that you may have a perceptual problem. My new Intel iMac is not "really" glossy and it does not have a "lot" of glare.
The ONLY time I've seen any noticeably offensive glare off the screen occurred when I was using a flash camera to take a series of photos of the iMac over the right shoulder of a girl who was playing The Sims 2 on a 24-inch 2.8 GHz iMac, in order to get pictures for an article I was writing about The Sims. The reflected flash from behind and to her right at an oblique angle lit up her face from the side and front and it showed in several pictures as a reflection of her face in the glass in front of the game image.
I'm using the computer every day and as far as I can tell the whole hoopla about the glare off the screen is a bunch of mindless niggling. A tempest in a teacup. The computer industry being what it is I'm sure that some entrepreneur in California has already designed a translucent matte screen for the iMac and is in negotiations to have it made in China for 17 or 19 cents each, to be sold here for $29.95.
    I wish it were me.
Speaking of which, I saw something on American TV a few months ago that was highly amusing. People on the street were quoted the phrase "a tempest in a teacup" and asked to explain their understanding of what a "tempest" was. Some people thought it was a small animal of some sort and most others simply did not know what the word meant at all. Not a clue.

  • New Apple Displays vs. Dell

A good friend of mine, a professional graphic designer and a Mac guru told me that Apple displays are manufactured by the same company that manufactures the ones for Dell, so essentially you get the same excellent quality monitors from both computer companies. Can anyone confirm this? I am thinking about returning my newly purchased Apple 23" display and getting a 27 or a 30" Dell monitor for nearly half the price.

The panel may be the same, but the hardware that drives the panel may be different and so might the specs that Dell and Apple use as their factory calibration target. Dell may drive the brightness and contrast up to please consumers, which may result in an unusable or difficult-to-calibrate-for black level. Apple calibrates for the contrast range of print. That said, there are plenty of designers successfully using Dells.
But you should also pay attention to what Michael415 said. There really is a Dell "panel lottery" that means you might not get the S-IPS panel you thought you got! If you don't get the same panel, the Apple monitor will be better. Even if you get the same panel, the Apple monitor might be better out of the box. If you are a designer, you can get the Dell but be sure you run a hardware calibrator on it. You should do that with an Apple anyway, but with a Dell you must.
Now, your friend is a designer, but are you? Because if you are not a designer, and you play games, you do NOT want an Apple monitor. Get a cheaper monitor with a faster response rate. The higher-quality panel in an Apple is better for designers, but gamers hate those panels because the response time is slow for action games. Slow response time does not affect designers because, well, objects on a page layout don't move much. Bottom line, each panel type is best for different purpose. There is no universal "best."
If you are neither a designer nor a gamer, don't get an Apple, get something in your budget and save your money. For non-designers, Apple monitors are old and not worth it. For extremely serious designers, the best monitors are Eizos and others that cost $1500 for 24". For pros, Apple is midrange.

  • 2003 eMac and 23inches new Apple display compatible?

I just got a new display (23in Apple) and I would like to plug it in my eMac
which only seems to have a VGA oulet,
Does anyone know of an adaptor that could do the trick?
Couldn't see any on the Mac online store.
Thanks a million for any suggestion.
    Francis

There are VGA to DVI converters, but they run about $300.00 US (you can find one such here). And your eMac doesn't support extended desktop, only mirroring, so unless you install a firmware hack (which you use strictly at your own risk), you would get the same picture at the same resolution as on your eMac's screen. Even with the hack, I'm not sure if the eMac would support the 23" LCD's resolution.
So it's up to you whether or not it's worth it. You could probably sell your eMac and combine that with the cost of the converter and buy a new Mac mini which would support that monitor directly.

  • Nvidia 7300GT card compatible with Apple's DVI to VGA Adaptor?

To rephrase, is the Mac Pro's stock Nvidia 7300 GT card able to support the Apple DVI to VGA connector which would allow me to connect a Viewsonics CRT? And will that card also allow me to connect a second CRT for dual monitors?
A temporary setup for a few months until I buy new Apple Displays...
    Many thanks,
    John

The card used with the adapter allows use of standard VGA monitors. There is always the chance that it won't, due to some irregularity, but I doubt it. Many have posted using VGA monitors and having no issues. Apple issues the adapter for your type of scenario.

  • Apple Mini DVI to S-Video Adapter

i was planning to buy a new Apple Mini DVI to S_Video Adapter
can some one tell me if I need an extra audio cable for sound or if s video can do this
    thanks for your help

Yes, it's only video. However, I have a cable that combines two audio cables and the s-video physically together. The audio cables are terminated with RCA jacks, so a short stereo RCA-to-headphone Y-adapter on one end connects to the headphone jack on the MacBook, and the appropriate audio and s-video jacks on my TV at the other.

  • MBP with New Apple LED Cinema Display

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to use an early-2008 MacBook Pro with the new Apple LED Cinema Display? I know that the new display is made specifically for the latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air with the mini-display port, but I wondered whether there will be some type of adapter offered so that an older MacBook Pro may be used with the new display (or whether this is even possible).
    Any input is appreciated.

  • Not detecting tv display when connected with Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapte

I am connecting my macbook to my older tv using a Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter to an RCA (yellow video prong) and then into the tv. The red and white audio prongs hang loose, not hooked into anything on both ends. When I go into Displays there is no option for mirroring displays. I hit 'detect displays' but nothing happens. The Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter is brand new, just ordered it from apple. And I use the RCA cord all the time with other machines into my tv and it works fine.
Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!

Which generation MacBook do you have because at some point Apple dropped support for that adapter. Here is a link to a list of Apple adapters and compatible computer models:

  • Apple Micro-DVI to Video Adapter New MacBook Air

    Hi All,
I am brand new to the Mac world (Been a PC user my entire life). Thought I would take a gamble on a Mac and see how it goes. So far I have been really impressed and happy!
I bought a MacBook Air a few weeks ago. It's a 2.13 GHZ MacBook Air. I would like to connect it to my "old school" standard TV which has S-Video and RCA (Yellow) inputs. I went on the Apple Store and found the Apple Micro-DVI to Video Adapter which says it is designed for a MacBook Air. Previosly though, I saw a discussion on another Mac type site that said this adapter was designed for the old MacBook Air laptops. Does anyone know if this adapter will work on my new MacBook Air? The techspecs call my MacBook Air video output a "MiniDisplay Port". Is this just a new name for Micro-DVI?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Peter

No, there is currently no adapter available to go from mini displayport to a compostie or s-video tv. Monoprice.com sells a mini displayport to hdmi cable. That's the closest there is.
    Your mba doesn't have a mini-dvi port.

    The 30" display needs a DUAL-LINK adapter.

  • New Mac Mini + 30" Apple Display = 1280x800??

I'm a long time Apple user and Apple developer. So I just bought a new Mac Mini (Macmini3,1) assuming, perhaps foolishly, it would simply plug into my Apple 30" display and I'd be able to get native resolution.
Unfortunately, 10.6.1 on the Mini only lists 1280x800 as the highest available resolution and it's not clear I have any options. Searching this forum only leads to hundreds of hits of every kind of display problem imaginable, and I frankly am pretty disappointed from using two relatively brand new Apple products together, only to get what feels like a PC experience.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

Thanks for the assistance guys. Yes, upon closer inspection of the info of a DVI dual link adapter is there, but then again I wasn't expecting a DVI device that plugs into a DVI socket to NOT work for two Apple products. What also threw me is that since my main machine is a MBP from two years ago (with the built-in dual link), I wasn't thinking about that stuff. Also, after reading the reviews for the DVI dual link adapter, I'm not sure I even want to go that route--there's some BAD stories there, ugh.
Sigh, I guess "it just works" is reserved for their ad campaigns these days.
    Anyway, thanks again guys.

  • Dvi projector won't recognize new Apple TV

I'm trying to connect a new apple tv to this Planar projector PR5022 High-Bright XGA DLP Projector = http://www.planar.com/products/projectors/pr5022/
I have an HDMI to DVI-D cable connecting the ATV to the DVI-D input on the projector, but the projector doesn't know that the ATV is connected. It says that there is no source or input or signal when I change the source to the DVI input. Can anyone provide any help, feeback, or suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
p.s. I need to know a solution ASAP.

Computer only most likely means the input is not HDCP compliant, (content protection is required for video playback).  HDMI inputs and some newer DVI equipped displays offer this.
It is possible that the frequencies that input recognizes doesn't include SMPTE rates such as 1080P, 1080i, and 720P, but that is more unlikely than the first bit.
