New Apple Keyboard F12 Key

Hello,
The new Apple aluminum keyboard's F12 key is the volume
key......I am wondering how I am going to go about using option/F12
and command/F12 to preview my pages in a browser when I am working
in DW? I tried the DW preferences and it only allows you to change
the browsers, but not the actual keystroke. Anyone have a
solution?

"Some function keys are not available to Dreamweaver
topic update: May 17, 2005"
Issue
Some of the function keys in the Dreamweaver default keyboard
shortcuts are
reserved for Mac OS X 10.4 system functions. Attempting to
perform a
function within Dreamweaver using those function keys will
instead perform a
Mac system function:
* The function key F12 is reserved on the Macintosh for the
Dashboard
utility.
* The function keys F9, F10, and F11 are reserved on the
Macintosh for
the Expose utility.
* Command+F5 turns on the Mac "Voice Over" feature.
* PowerBooks and iBooks use additional function keys for
screen
brightness (F1 & F2), sound (F3, F4 & F5) and
keyboard light (F8).
Solution
* Change the Dreamweaver keyboard shortcuts. In the
Dreamweaver menu,
select Dreamweaver > Keyboard Shortcuts.
Note: To change the shortcut for Preview in Browser, when the
Keyboard
Shortcuts dialog box opens, choose Document editing from the
Commands menu,
then scroll down to Preview in Primary Browser to define an
alternate
shortcut.
* Use the menu commands instead of the keyboard shortcuts.
For example,
select your browser by choosing File > Preview in Browser
> the preferred
browser.
* Change the shortcut key for Dashboard and Expose in the
Macintosh
System Preferences: Apple menu > System Preferences>
Dashboard & Expose´.

  • IMac G5 & new apple keyboard - some keys not working

I have an iMac G5 (2GHz, 20 inch), running OS X Tiger (10.4.11) and I recently purchased the new apple keyboard (the wired version without the numpad, to save desk space). I am finding that the function keys at the top don't work - specifically, the keys that control sound. I've googled this, and installed the Keyboard Software Update 1.2 that most people said fixed their problem - but it hasn't fixed mine.
Instead, the f10-f12 keys don't control the sound functions, but the f12 key ejects discs (it sits next to the eject button, so perhaps this is a wiring error?), and the caps lock key does not always work when hitting it - it needs a large amount of pressure. I would think that my keyboard was defective, but I just exchanged it yesterday, and the new one has the same problems. I'm getting close to just giving up and getting a refund.

Hello - thank you for the quick responses! To answer your question, yes, I have repaired my permissions and restarted, to no avail.
I have looked through the keyboard prefs quite a bit, and cannot find anything that allows me to choose where to map the sound keys. I have checked "Use All F1 F2 etc keys as standard function keys". In the small aluminum keyboards, the f keys are dual-function - in this case, the f10-f12 keys also control dashboard, etc, which I have turned off (but I have tested the keys with these options both off & on, with the fn key, without the fn key, etc - tried lots of combinations). I've tried quite a few things to get these keys to work. Honestly, the f1-f4 keys don't seem to work at all either.
I might try and take a video later today to show you what I mean. The caps lock key is the biggest thing that's bothering me - I use it instead of shift to type, and 75% of the type it does not activate when pressed...I would think this was just one bogus keyboard if it weren't for the fact that I already exchanged it once...

  • New Apple Keyboard. Key jamming.

I wasn't sure which forum to post this in as I couldn't find a one dedicated to the Apple peripherals.
I recently bought one of the new Apple keyboards. My experience with it hasn't been good.
Why? The keys jam -- namely, the return key. They have a tendency to catch themselves under the aluminium casing. 'Xxxxxxxxxxxx...' is not a terrible problem but 'return, return, return, return, return, return, return...' can cause all kinds of nuiscances!
Is this a common problem with all the new Apple keyboards? Did I waste my money on fancy metal and plastic? If I ask Apple to replace my keyboard, how can I be sure the replacement will not have the same defect?
If Apple replace my keyboard, will I have to return my old one before receiving the replacement? If that was the case, I'd be without a keyboard! (...if I bought another one for the interim, what would be the point of having the old on replaced?)
So: should I get the old one replace by Apple? (Will they replace it?) Will I be without a keyboard? Would my money be better spent on a keyboard from another manufacturer? ...What's the best line of complaint? Has anyone experienced the same problems?

no, you call Apple with the complaint,
that take your information, credit card, shipping address, etc.
they ship you a New keyboard and you have 10 days to ship the defective keyboard back to Apple...
If you do not ship the defective keyboard back, they will charge you for the replacement...
    Thanks,

  • New apple keyboard Fn keys don't work

    Hi,
Posting this in PowerMac G5 and OSX Tiger as I am not sure if it is a hardware or software issue.
I just recently bought a new aluminium apple keyboard and am very very happy. EXCEPT:
When I first plugged it in, all the hotkeys/fn keys (the default ones such as play/pause/skip track/volume/brightness) all worked fine... but I had 3rd party SizzlingKeys installed... that sprang into life, and suddenly all the Apple default key functions stopped working.
I uninstalled Sizzling keys, trashed all relevent files, restarted... nothing.
Tried to reset them via SystemPreferences... didn't work.
How can I make these come back to life?
    Thanks

I've used SizzlingKeys in the past. It was novel for a few months but conflicted with keyboard commands I was used to in other applications. The iTunes library on that computer is no longer used. However, I see that SizzlingKeys 1.7.2 is still installed. Preferences depict only two SizzlingKey options enabled: Play/Pause and Almost Mute. The rest have their checkboxes clicked off. Here, at least, there is no conflict with the Apple keyboard functions on that G4 computer running Panther.
It seems awfully odd that a removed application could still be causing a conflict. If SizzlingKeys is the culprit and nothing else worked, I (perhaps not you) would be inclined to reinstall it. Whatever iTunes actions are mapped to F1 through F4 and F7 though F12 can be disabled or changed within the SizzlingKeys Preference Pane. There is even an option to disable SizzlingKeys altogether. Should you then decide to remove it again, do so after disabling everything in the Preference Pane. Between this and the Keyboard Shortcuts button labeled "Restore Defaults" (Keyboard & Mouse Preference) the problem should be resolved.
(FYI: If you were using a notebook computer, there would be another option to toggle that requires the extra Fn key to the right of the Control key to be pressed for access to special Apple functions. But since you posted this in the G5 forum, this apparently doesn't apply.)

  • New Apple Keyboard - Dashboard and Exposé Keys not working

I have the new Apple Keyboard connected to my PowerMac G5 and i have installed the lasted Keyboard Software Update (1.1) from the Apple website. All new function keys are working (the media keys, brightness, etc.) except for the dashboard and exposé keys. I cannot get them to work, not even asign them in the preferences. Anyone else have this problem? Solutions?

I bought the new aluminum keyboard the other day, but didn't notice there was a software update required. Last night a keyboard software package appeared in Software Update, so I downloaded and installed it. Now virtually nothing works in the function keys except brightness and volume. No dashboard where it's supposed to be, no Exposé, and worryingly no F12 Preview In Browser, which I use a lot for Dreamweaver and web design. Dashboard now appears in F13.
I then went and downloaded the 1.1 Update I should have done in the first place, but this has changed nothing. And yes, I think the PowerPC users are being forgotten when this new stuff is made. But...just how many million of us are there?

  • New Apple Keyboard Launchpad F4 key does not work

New Apple Keyboard Launchpad F4 key does not work
Hi, I have now got ne new wireless keyboard because my old one broke. I connected the keyboard, the F3 key (Mission Control) functions, the F4 key, especially for Lunchpad does not work, I'm Lion on it, previously on the old keyboard I had in 2009, he occupiedwith Launchpad F5.
Have System Preferences / Keyboard / Keyboard Shortcuts reset everything goes ......... but not yet!!
    Maybe someone can help me!!
    Thank you
    greeting

    Hi,
Your migration to Lion brought over a previous hot key preferences document. And this contains one bad key that wasn't updated.
    - Quit System Preferences (if open)
    - Delete this document to remove a carry-over mapping error.
    - Then logout
Note: That this will delete any existing modified keyboard assignments. Re-assign changes manually.
Note2: This document is in your users preferences folder.

  • Startup keys with new Apple Keyboard and MacBook Pro

Upon powering up my Rev. A MBP, I hold down the OPTION key on the new Apple Keyboard to select my startup disk. Strangely, the startup went straight into the default startup disk that I have chosen previously. I didn't get to selection stage.
I tried with the old/white Apple Keyboard and my MBP keyboard and startup disk selector is A-Okay.
I hooked up the new keyboard to my new Mac mini and did the same thing and no problem.
Haven't tried with the rest of the startup keys like C or X yet with the MBP. Wonder is this a software bug between the MBP and keyboard.
    Anyone with similar experience?

Actually, startup keys sequences do work with the Apple Wireless Keyboard (the old white one). I know because I have been using it that way with my Macs, PPC and Intel ones.
I tried Command-V, Command-S, Option, T, C and Shift on the new keyboard with my Rev. A MBP and it goes go straight into the Apple logo.
Swapped back to the old Apple Keyboard with my MBP and tried the keys above and no problems whatever so.
Hooked up the new Apple Keyboard to my new Mac mini and did the same keys without problems.
So, my conclusion is there something between the new keyboard and Rev. A MBP. Maybe someone with similar setup should try wha I did and see if they face the same issues.

  • New Apple Keyboard and Insert Key

I'm using the new Apple Keyboard (http://www.apple.com/keyboard/) and I'm quite happy with it. The only big disadvantage is the missing Insert-Key, the Apple Keyboard has a function (fn) Key, where the insert-key is normally located. I need the insert-key especially for selecting in midnight commander. What would be the best way to remap the insert-key to the fn-key for console and X-Windows?

Here are some relevant other threads:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56619
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=55482
These are just threads I've participated in; I'm sure there are more. The bottom line is: check with showkey (in the Linux console) or xev (in X) to see how the fn key is getting recognized. If it's working just like another key on the keyboard, e.g., like space or shift, then you can remap it the same way you'd remap any key. (The process is different for Linux console than for X.) But most likely it's not working just like another key on the keyboard, in which case it will be difficult/impossible to remap it to insert. However, you could always choose another key, or key combination, to remap to insert. Perhaps even a key combination of the form fn+KEY. The kernel won't recognize fn as a modifier like shift or control, but it should recognize SOME fn+KEY combinations as being SOME keyboard keys. For example, on my keyboard fn+left arrow is recognized as Home. I think that as far as the kernel and all the key-remapping tools can tell, I only pressed Home on my keyboard not any combination including left arrow.

  • Using New Apple Keyboard with Tiger

    Hey all,
So I recently got one of the new Apple Keyboards
(http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB869LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1Mg&mco=Nzk3NjM4NQ) for me to use with my Macbook, which is connected to an external display. However, the one problem I've been having is that it seems like the function keys are mapped differently between Leopard/SL and Tiger, so that when I press F12, which should be volume up according to my keyboard, Dashboard appears instead, which is what happens on my Tiger Macbook's actual keyboard. Now this would be fine and dandy as long as F5 corresponded to volume up as well, as it does originally, but f5 now refreshes my internet page. Is there any way to correct this? Thanks.

Check if reassigning keys in preferences > keyboard > keyboard shortcuts does anything
    Not sure if this helps:
[DoubleCommand|http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net> is software for Mac OS X (a kernel extension) that lets you remap keys. Has a preset variety of key modifier remappings, specifically for adapting PC keyboards to Mac users.

  • New Apple Keyboard Problems

I am not able to use the Dashboard and Exposé buttons on the new Apple Keyboard. I cannot assign them in the preferences nor were they set up initially. I have installed the latest keyboard update (Version 1.1) but it still does not work.
My Setup: An ACD 20" is attached to the PowerBook. The lid is closed.

Alright! I finally got my NEW aluminum keyboard from my local Apple Store (I made sure to call in before going... not that it's a journey to get there, but don't want to waste time if they don't have it) and just installed it with my PowerMac G4 Dual FW 800 model.
I'm typing on it right now instead of my PowerBook.
ALL functions are working for me. What I did was to install the keyboard FIRST by plugging it in to the computer's USB port.
Then I went to Apple's download/support site to get the keyboard update software 1.1...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html
...and then restarted my PowerMac. Voila! (It didn't work. It was connected to a USB 2.0 PCI card, so I unplugged it from there to the built-in USB 1.1 port on the PowerMac and then it worked. I put it back to the USB 2.0 card's ports and it worked after that).
F1 and F2 don't work for brightness and contrast modes because I am now using an Envision 17" LCD dual monitor setup (my 17" Studio Display is being used by an older PowerMac G4 533 MHz). I think if it was an Apple LCD display--Studio (plastic) or Cinema (aluminum) versions--it would recognize it. The F3 for Expose and F4 for Dashboard work fine. I haven't tried the DVD player controls for F7 through F9. F10 through F12 work great for sound, even if I have non-Apple external speakers. (Makes me wonder about the monitor controls). Eject key works too. And the REAL eject key, not the F12 hold key down to eject.
So, I'm sorry that you're all having problems. I'd connect it to my PowerBook, but because I'm a very meticulous and exacting person, I don't want to disconnect anything because I have it setup where the wires are hidden and it's all perfect right now.
But as I said in an earlier posting, when I went down to my Apple Store and tried the new keyboards out that were connected to the NEW iMacs, those keyboard functions didn't work!! Irony, huh?
Mine purrs like a Leopard... aha!!
(I love the quiet sound and less exacting pressure needed to type as opposed to my previous black Apple Pro Keyboard. I would never have bought this new flat aluminum keyboard if it didn't match my Envision silver monitors).
By the way, I have a Mighty Mouse (wired version) connected to it too. And yes, the aluminum keyboard I bought was the wired version as well.

$49 well spent!! I don't like the wireless version. Looks kind of odd shaped with the extra space on top (for the batteries). They didn't have those in stock anyway.
Message was edited by: Pismo 900 (second edit)
Also, I haven't touched anything in System Preferences. Everything worked after FIRST, connect the keyboard, SECOND, install the software update, THIRD, restart (had to unplug it from PCI USB 2.0 slot to USB 1.1 native port, and then back to USB 2.0 port), and after login, all worked without a hitch.
I don't even want to fool around with system prefs now, since maybe that's what causes the problem (no proof there from me) when you try and tweak or customize your settings.

  • New Apple Keyboard with MacBook Pro

Hi - I got the new Apple keyboard today and in spite of other users opinion - I like it very much. It is small and very silent. I had a good feeling for the touch from the start. I love the new keys for multimedia, especially those for iTunes.
Only complaint I have: the keys for Dashboard and Exposé dont seem to work at all. Similar experiences or advice?
    Thanks...

I just got my MBP yesterday and immediately found Expose to be an issue with the keyboard. I did some hunting and here's the solution:
this is easy. Go to the Keyboard/Mouse setup and uncheck "Use F1-F12 for Software features". That makes the F-keys F-keys again. If you want to control brightness and volume again then press "fn" plus the corresponding f-key.
Unfortunately, you can't customize it between the 2 modes so I went withusing hot corners.

  • My 2006 Imac running 10.4.11 is not working well with my new apple keyboard

just bought a new apple keyboard - wired full keyboard - The Funtion keys will not respond as marked.
for example, the f12 key, marked Volume up, brings up my dashboard.
The only function keys that I can change are f1 and f2.
In the keyboard shortcut of Preference, there is not even a listing for volume.
And no, I am not going to update my OS beyond 10.4.11
    Help

It's a USB keyboard it should be fine. I have a similar model that works on 10.5.
If it doesn't work you can almost certainly return it (local sales laws apply, so check those).
You could also go to an Apple Store (or any other PC store) & ask them if it could work & ask if it doesn't work can it be returned?
You can search Ebay or Amazon etc for a keyboard that says it supports 10.4, however since that OS is also 10 years old not many manufactures are willing to test an ancient OS that not many people use anymore.
Another option is to find a second hand keyboard from the same era of Mac. Frankly that would be 'icky if it has been used.
Alternately you could try fixing or cleaning yours, but these things don't last forever.
    Keyboards & mice generally work.

    Dear appler's,

  • New Apple Keyboard Incompatible w/OS 10.4.11 is there a Solution?

I have a new Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad but it isn't  working correctly with my Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 running os 10.4.11.
The problem is the top row of Function Keys (such as monitor brightness keys, speaker volume and on/off keys, etc) do not work correctly.
Is there any sort of software patch I can download to correct the way the keyboard is programmed so it will work correctly with my computer's OS, or is any other workaround?
