New Apple laptops, power cords and batteries

Eventually, my parents' white MacBook is going to wear out and need to be replaced. I am keeping an eye on the discount deals for refurbished laptops on the Apple Store. I may also have to do some business traveling in the future, necessitating that I get a laptop as well for on-the-road computing.
A few necessary questions:
1: If they order a refurb MacBook Air, where do you go to find an extra AC plug-in cord?
2: Are there any cigarette-lighter-adaptor plug-in kits available for the current generation of Apple laptops, so that a laptop could be operated/battery topped off while in a vehicle or on an airplane?
3: What about connecting to AC power while traveling outside the US? If an Apple laptop user goes to, say, Europe (Germany, UK, France, Denmark, etc.) does he/she have to carry a special connection kit along to plug-into AC wall power?
4: What are the realistic longevity/operational lifespan expectations for Apple's current laptop batteries? How many years should these batteries last, and how expensive are they to have Apple replace?
Thanks in advance!

Apple's Online Store or a local Apple retailer.

Yes there are such animals for cars. I don't know about airplanes.

The power unit auto-switches from 110 to 220 v systems. All one needs is a wall outlet plug adaptor. They are available in Apple's World Travel Kit as well as from most AAA travel stores.

Impossible to say since the answer depend upon usage. All we know is the battery's lifespan is supposedly around 1000 full charge cycles.

  • Difference between an apple brand power cord and a knockoff power cord?

So I bought a RocketFish branded 30-pin to USB power cord for my iPod Classic because I had to throw out the other one for wear and tear. I went to the store earlier to pick up a new one. I usually shop at Best Buy for all electronics and accessories. However, I came across an Apple branded 30-pin to USB cord and a RocketFish branded 30-pin to USB cord and was confused as I usually am about certain products. I asked an employee what the difference is and she couldn't give me a straight answer. So my question is what is the difference between the two brands? i need one that will charge and SYNC?
I have used the Apple brand power cord before and have no complaints except the wear and tear is very easy to do if you aren't careful with it.

They are basically the same except one is made in a Chinese factory for Apple and is Apple-branded. The other is just a knock-off.

  • HP Laptop Power Cord Safety Recall and Replacement

Some power cords for HP and Compaq and mini notebook computers sold from September 2010 through June 2012 may be part of voluntary recall and replacement program launched on August 26, 2014.
The impacted power cords have the potential to overheat, posing a fire, and burn hazard.
To see if your cord may be affected, look for a “LS-15” marking molded into the connector that plugs into the AC adapter.
If you see a LS-15 marking please go to http://www.hp.com/support/PowerCordReplacement
Please note that there are two parts needed to charge your laptop.
    1)      The first part is the power cord that plugs into the wall.
    Figure 1
    2)      The second part is the adapter.
    Figure 2
HP is ONLY recalling the power cord used with HP and Compaq notebooks and mini notebooks and accessories such as docking stations. (See Figure 1)
To qualify your power cord and request and replacement, go here.
Since power cords for laptops are compatible, you can use another power cord with your AC adapter until the replacement one arrives.
I work for HP, supporting the HP Experts who volunteer their time and technical knowledge to help others.

Does HP really expect us to individually validate every single laptop in our fleet to see if the cord that originally shipped with the machine is included in the recall? That's putting your customers through a lot of hoops to resolve an issue that could result in a safety hazard.
Also, and as you yourselves point out in the bulletin, these cords are completely interchangable, and there's no guarantee that the cord in use on the machine is the one that shipped with it.
Please provide an easier method to determine if these cords are affected by the recall. Thanks.

    Welcome!
Last question first, as we need to know what operating system that the Mac is using.
If you are not sure, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac, and post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
Two possible solutions on the power cord

  • I need to purchase a power cord for my intel based 27" iMac.  I have had it for almost 2 years, I don't have apple care and I don't want to take it in to the genius bar. I know it's the power cord and I just want to purchase one.

iMacs take generic power cords. If it fits into the back of the iMac and an electrical socket, it'll work.
    Good luck.

  • HT1688 SINCE DOING THE LATEST APPLE IPHONE 4 UPDATE MY PHONE WILL NOT TURN ON. ONLY GET A PICTURE OF THE POWER CORD AND AN ITUNES ICON. WHAT DO I DO?

Since doing the latest update on my iphone 4 when I try to turn on the phone all i get is a picture of a power cord and an itunes icon. what do i do?

You can reload your data from your most recent backup. If you backup at least weekly, you would only lose anything added since that backup.

  • My iMac wouldn't turn on. This has happened out of nowhere, it was working really well before.  checked my power cord and outlets everything's fine.  The iMac has no power at all. no sound or anything, completely dead.  It is only 1 year and 2 mos old.

I have purposely been ignoring your responses to my posts about the heat issues in the newer design iMacs, but if you want really want to ague the point...
First, the iMac is marketed as a desktop model Mac. Not a laptop or MacBook.
I have never owned a MacBook, so I can't attest to how much heat the MacBooks generate.
I Have two iMac models. A 2009, 27 inch screen iMac for myself. And a 2010, 21.5 inch screen iMac for my Fiancée.
As a desktop Mac these are hottest running desktop Macs I have ever owned. Period. I owned two beige Macs, a pre-G3 tower, aG3 desktop, a G4 MDD Tower, the original iMac, eMac, iMac G4 and now my current iMacs.
None of my previous Macs have ever, EVER ran this hot. I have never, also, had any component failures in any of the previous Macs I have owned, either. All of my Macs have been upgraded or modded to some degree over the years.  About 2 years ago I had to press my old G3 back into service. Both my G3 and G4 models have been heavily modded. The G3 ran without issue for a close friend for over a year until that friend went out a got a Mac Mini.
That's a 1996-97 Mac my friend. And it still is in working order and hasn't had any failures.
The fact I am pointing out here is that heat is an enemy to electronic components.
Whether desktop iMac or MacBooks, tightly packed enclosures of heat generating computer components with fans that do not run fast enough at most times to cool off the interior or exterior, will and does slow roast computer components to premature failure.
I do not know how frequent component failure is in the MacBook line up. So I can't attest to those.
I do not participate in those forums.
This is why at some point in computer history, Super Conputers were liquid cooled. PowerMac G5 systems were liquid cooled because they ran too hot!
I have taken my own precautions to keep my iMacs' heat down as much as possible.
I don't  have the money to keep buying a new Mac every 3-5 years when some catastrophic failure happens.
I had to purchase my iMacs used as I couldn't afford the cost of a new iMac with the specs I needed.
My idea, your idea and Apple's idea of acceptable operating temps we can argue all day long.
I feel, personally, that the operating temps are too high and exacerbate operational issues.
I Have been participating in these particular iMac forums for just over a year and have seen plenty of posts of iMac component failures due to both heat and dust, dirt issues from within the iMac.
There can be no other reason for all of these failures. The SuperDrive is, usually, the first to go bad.
It's probably due more to its vertical mounting, but the excessive interior heat isn't helping it.
Next to fail is the GPU. The last to fail, but the most expensive to fix, the Logic Board.
I Have seen plenty of posts in my last year here of all of these failures in iMac less than 5 years old and ,perhaps, a little older. 2008 model iMacs seem to have their issues, too!
Apple is focusing too much on design and aesthetics, rather than longevity of their products, I feel now.
A Mac isn't going to last 7- 10 years anymore.
I don't have stats and numbers. Just common sense.
This is my story and I am sticking to it. For what it's worth.

  • My MacBook Air won't charge using the power cord and it's not the power cord that's malfunctioning. The battery is now exhausted.

My MacBook Air won't charge using the power cord and it's not the power cord that's malfunctioning. I went to Radio Shack and tried two new cords. The battery is now dead. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, my battery has died as a result of not being able to charge with the power cord. Not sure what an SMC reset is but I have made an appointment to bring my laptop in to the Apple Store. Thank you for your response. Very much appreciated.
    Warm Regards,

  • Picture of a power cord and iTune symbol

tried to update software to....maybe ios 8. After 25 min I turned it off.  turned it on only to see a pic of power cord and iTunes symbol.  left it plugged in to charge overnight and still cannot get anything but power cord pic and iTune.  Help?

That screen means the device has entered recovery mode and you must use recovery mode to attach to a computer running iTunes to restore it.  See the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 and in summary:

  • I phone 4 screen just showing power cord and i tunes logo after doing an update

Tried to do an update on my Iphone 4.  Now the only thing showing on my screen is a picture of the power cord and the I-tunes logo.  I can't power it off or on.  I have tried holding down both buttons but nothing happens.

You need to restore the device.

  • TS1365 My Macbook Pro (mid 2009) is on the second power cord and I am having the same problems as I did with my first.  It won't charge.  Is this normal to have this happen twice?  Is the computer causing the problems?

This is my second power cord and it is now not charging either.  Is this a coincidence or is my computer causing the power cord failures?

    Hi T,
I would bring it to an Apple Store or AASP to have it checked out. If it's under warranty, it's their problem, not yours.

  • While transferring my documents from my Desktop to my new Apple laptop through a memory stick all of my files on my Desktop were lost. What Happened?

While transferring my Documents from my desktop to my new Apple laptop through a memory stick all of my documents were lost. I cannot find them anywhere...What happened?

If I'm reading this right, you copied the Documents folder from your User account to a memory stick? How big was the Documents folder?
How did you carry out the copy?
Drag and drop from user account to stick? - This should copy the data leaving the originals on your desktop Mac.
⌘-drag from user account to stick? - This would move the files - copy them over, then delete the originals.
Entire folder at one go or a few files at a time?
Assuming that you used the memory stick as received (straight out of the pack) it would almost certainly be formatted FAT32 or even FAT16 so it can be used onWindows or Mac. There are file size limits with both those formats, which could cause problems, but I'm not sure complete loss of data would result.

  • Using old power cords and adaptors. . .

so it's pretty obvious, most people (including myself) are having major battery power/life issues with their 3GS iPhones.
so, i've had multiple iPods since 2004 and have saved all my old power cords and power adaptors. i've also got an aftermarket power cord for the car too. to keep my phone charged i'm thinking of using one cord in my car, one by my bedside, one at my desk, and one at work.
my question is, though these cords/adaptors came with or were designed for older generation ipods, can i still use them safely with my iPhone 3GS? i'd rather not have to buy a bunch of new cords/adaptors (which tend to cost $20-$40 a piece!)
    thanks!

I have a first gen iPod which takes firewire brick plus firewire end plug cord. My fourth, fifth and classic iPods along with my first gen iPhone take firewire or USB brick with dock end plug. The 3G and 3GS iPhone will ONLY take USB brick with dock connector. My USB car charger worked in all my iPhones and iPods. zoz
