New AppleTV and Synology (NAS)

Hi,
Will I be able to feed content to the new AppleTV from my Synology DS210J NAS? It has an "iTunes service"...
I wouldn't be happy if I had to turn on my monstrous gaming computer in the bedroom every time I wanted to listen to music in the living room.
Thanks,
Jon

Not directly. Apple TV requires either a synched or streamed sever to respond with a 4 digit code upon initial link-up. The NAS's use the mt-daap/FireFly media server which does not have the capability to respond with a 4 digit code response. Besides, iTunes 10 broke the ability of most NAS mt-daap/FireFly servers to share thru iTunes.
I've never tried streaming iTunes 9.21 shared library audio/visual files from a NAS. I'll have to try that when I get a chance.
BTW, the mt-daap/FireFly server s/w hasn't been updated in two years, and it's speculated on the 'Net that the developer has stopped the development. However, I new guy is furthering the development under the generic name of "forked-daapd". But, it will be up to the NAS compa benies to fix their units, not Apple. (Another discussion.) Guess I won't updating to iTunes 10 for awhile.

  • ITunes 11.1.3 on Mavericks and Synology NAS

Mavericks, iTunes 11.1.3 and Synology NAS... it now seems iTunes is not anymore able to play or import files to the library if they're placed on the NAS... if I click on any file, it won't play and I have to force quit iTunes application.
anyone experienced the same issue? is there any fix?

    I have the same problem.
Finder sees my Synology NAS, but iTunes cannot seem to access the music. The NAS shows up in the sidebar, but I just keep getting the spinning wheel (or whatever it's called).
    Can anyone suggest a fix?
I should note that I have no issues with accessing the NAS through Finder - so it looks to be an iTunes issue.

  • Aperture and Synology NAS 212j

Hi everyone. I just bought a Synology NAS (2x2tb HD) which I plan to use with all my media (music-photos-videos) so I can access it through a mac mini server, connected to my living room tv. Concerning my photos, I have them all in a Macbook Pro (400Gb library) working with aperture 3, all managed files stored within the Aperture Library on the MacBook.
What I was planning to do is, while keeping my macbook as it is, (with all photos and aperture library stored in it, as a back-up), create a new aperture library on my mac mini and point it to the masters file located at the NAS.
I already placed a copy of all my masters in the NAS and I can actually access all these pictures once the NAS DiskStation is mounted on my wired network.
I then tried to copy all the folders and files inside the aperture library icon (except the masters), and paste them on the Mac Mini's Photo folder so that I could launch Aperture (option click) and chose to open that library.
The problem is that I get an error message: "There was an error opening the database for the library '/volume/photo/vacationeurope2012.aplibrary".
The solution I am looking for is how to keep my library and masters on my macbook and, at the same time, create a "copy" of that same library, where the library database would be stored in the mac mini and all the files (masters+projects) on the NAS.
I am now trying something new, which is to transfer the copy I have on a external HD of the whole 400Gb Aperture library and place it the MacMini. I'd then open aperture and make it relocate the masters, pointing them to the Synology DiskStation.
Any other ideas would be greatly apreciated!!
    Thanks
    Gustavo

    Hi Gustavo,
Be careful with what you place on your NAS because it is not HFS+ formated, and that means that some of the information that Mac OSx needs can't be stored on other file systems.
I currently own a QNAP NAS and I also wanted to move my iPhoto, iTunes, etc Libraries onto the NAS, but before I did so I looked it up a little bit and it seems to not be that good idea unless you purchase, of course, yet another Apple product: Time Capsule or Airport Extreme.
On the other hand, I would also like to stream videos to iPads and iPhones in my household. For that, you really need a powerful CPU. State-of-Art 2-bay NASes feature Atom processors and they choke on large files...
I may start looking into migrating my current setup and go for a Mac Mini (with enough horsepower for video transcoding) with a Time Capsule attached to it.
Man, Apple works flawlessly and I do love them, but they are sooo incompatible with every single other thing out there...

A pages document is saved as a folder on my NAS en cannot be opened on my ipad

Apple changed the file format in the latest versions of the iWork Apps and most 3rd party software is not recogniozing the compressed bundle as a bundle. Instead they see them as folder full of files.
Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5.

  • New AppleTV & NAS ...

Ignoring the movie rental aspects, would I be right in believing the new AppleTV is essentially an Airport Express with video, up to 720p, that feeds off other devices on the network - computers, NAS, etc ... so don't have to rent, could load own copies onto NAS (*) and use the new AppleTV to watch them ... ???
(*) perhaps bought with the cost-saving the new one brings ...

Well, I for one really hope a NAS solution with the new AppleTV will work. Having to leave a computer running iTunes for AppleTV (old or new one) is just not 2010.
I am willing to buy the new AppleTV, sometime in 2011, if that issue has been sorted and confirmed to be working. After so much dropped connections (my AppleTV needs to have the power plug pulled and put back in once a day, it just disappears over night and won't show up in iTunes after a computer has been shut off for any number of hours.
We're buying a SONOS system now for the Music part, which remains the most important bit. For video, I can live with re-plugging the silly little box (old AppleTV), but it also remains the only Apple product I tell my friends not to get. Hope the new black version does it all so much better. And can go straight to a NAS storage (incl. VIDEO!) soon.

  • I cannot log on to ITunes to set up Home sharing between my new IPAD and AppleTV. Therfe is not even the typical home screen for me to log on to my account at APlle Store or ITunes?

I have a new IPAD and just bought APple TV. Need to set up home sharing on my account and have followed Support options wherein you log into ITunes, choose advanced, then allow Home sharing. There is no place to even sign in to ITunes as i have always seen before. Cannot start ITunes on  Laptop (linked to IPAD) at all but can from Browser. Trying to share content from my IPAD and APple TV.
I had no problem doing so on my home PC and APple TV but not IPAD?

What does "can from browser" mean?
Trying to share content from my IPAD and APple TV.
You don't share content from AppleTV (as it contains no content) and you can AirpPlay from iPad to AppleTV, not share content.
To turn on Home Sharing on the iPad, Settings > Store.
THis allow soyu to view the content of the iTune slibrary on your comnoputer.

  • AppleTV and iTunes without Leaving Computer On All The Time/NAS iTunes Server

I begrudge having to leave my iMac on all the time just so now and again I can play music, pictures and video from it through AppleTV. My iMac is 2 floors up from the AppleTV, and as there is no wake on LAN working (I can't get it to work if there is (I have Lion)) I don't want to go up there to turn the Mac on when I want to use AppleTV.
So I have read some articles about iTunes servers on NAS drives and wondered if that would be a good solution, anyone try them?
If I did have my iTunes library on a NAS drive with an iTunes server, when I start iTunes on my iMac will it then load the iTunes Library as it does now like if it was a local library? So I can still manage it in the same way as I do on my Mac.
I assume then I could have another computer use the same library on the NAS? (although wont do it the same time due to conflicts)
I have iCloud/Match so not so bothered about music as I can play from the Cloud (although its hit ad miss sometimes), but I have videos and pictures I stream to AppleTV so they are more important. I don't want to have a computer left on all the time so I can use AppleTV.
If this is not possible, then I am thinking of getting a Macbook for the lounge, but then I don't want to have to plug/unplug my external hard drives into it all the time, which I am likely to swap with the main iMac too.
    Thanks a lot

P.S. I only play music from iCloud as my iMac is not on. So if I can stream to AppleTV without having a computer on, then I would do that to be faster, work all the time, and save bandwidth.

  • IMovie cannot see projects and events on Synology NAS

I am using their 3.1 firmware. Which I believe is the latest.
And I have the latest Lion OS on my MB Pro.
I realized today that iMovie does not see the hard drive the way it used to in Snow Leopard.
I have read other threads here where people were using ReadyNAS and everything started working after Lion OS upgrade.
But that is not the case for me.
Anybody any ideas as to what to do?
    Thanks!

    I am using:
    - Synology NAS with DSM 4.0,

    - Lion OS 10.7.3
iMovie cannot see my library on the NAS either.

  • BT Home Hub 3 and Synology Diskstation DS212J NAS ...

After a recent move I've been trying to set up my NAS again with my new BT broadband (having previously been with Sky). Upon connecting everything up properly, the NAS doesn't show up on the list of connected devices on the router. Even when plugging the NAS into my laptop and trying to connect, I still cannot access it.
I've read other posts about needing to set a static IP address and forward the ports for the NAS. I've set the ports up but because I cannot access the NAS I'm unable to assign it a static IP address and don't really know what else to do.
Please help, it's driving me bonkers! I've tried everything I can think of.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What make of router does Sky supply?  Is it a netgear?  It's possible that the Nas already had a fixed address on a different range to the bt hub (192.168.0.* rather than 192.168.1.*)  In which case the 2 devices won't communicate.  There are a couple of things you could try.  Do you still have the old router?  Power it up and connect a pc to it with ethernet and then do an ipconfig on the command prompt (Press windows key and r, enter cmd or command, then hit enter, will bring up the command prompt, then type ipconfig and hit enter).
Then look for the ethernet adapter, local area connection.  Look underneath that heading for the lines IP address/IPv4 address and default gateway.  If the default gateway for that router isn't 192.168.1.254 then the nas won't be seeing the router if it has a static ip already assigned.  You could at that point attach the nas, see if you can access it and then set it's tcp/ip settings to dhcp, which should then get it to connect to the hub.  From there you can set up a fixed internal address.
Rather than change the details on the Nas, you could always change the DHCP range on your hub, although someone else would be better walking you through that as I am not completely au fait with exactly how it is done on the home hubs.
What you could also try is disconnect everything apart from one pc and the nas from the hub, open command prompt again and enter the following command:
    FOR /L %i IN (1,1,254) DO ping -n 1 192.168.1.%i
That command will ping all of the ip addresses on the range 192.168.1.1 to .1.254.  Watch the screen.  Hopefully you will get 2 responses, one from your pc and one from your nas.  Make a note of the ip addresses you get a response from.  You should be able to match one to your pc and you can then check out any others that respond by entering the ip address in your web browser.
I appreciate it is quite a long post, but hopefully at least one of these will help you get access to your Nas again.

  • Synology NAS and iTunes

    Hey everybody,
I know there's a lot written about this already, but it's pretty overwhelming and hard to find the answer.
I would like to have a music library on my Synology NAS that is synced with a local copy on my MBP.  Why?  I would like to have access to my library on the go even in the absence of an internet connection.
BUT, I would also like my family to have access to all the music at home while I'm away.  I'd also like a Sonos system to play our library without my MBP needing to be on.
Is this possible?  How would I do this?  Can I have a local library that is always in sync with one on the NAS?
    So confusing!
I really appreciate any help you can offer.

  • Synology NAS integration with iTunes

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a Synology NAS DiskStation 212J, planning to free some space on my MacBook Pro, transfering photos, music and video to the DiskStation, which is connected to my wired network. On my network I have a Mac Mini server, connected to my living room TV, from where I want to manage all my files.
Regarding iTunes (I have a library of around 350 gb), what I did was the following:
    1) Copied all the Itunes Media folder to the NAS DiskStation, placing it on the following folder: Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music
    2) I then copied to my MacMini server all of the iTunes Database files, which include the itune library.itl and others.
    3) Opened iTunes (option click) and selecter the new iTunes library.
As expected, iTunes opened with all my playslists and names, except that the files where not found, as I moved the media folder. I tried locating 1 single music and it played ok,  once it found the path.
    4) I then changed on the preferences the location of itunes media, pointing it to the NAS.
It's been more than 5 hours and the colored wheel keeps spining.
Will this work? Did I do something wrong?
Is there any other way around this?
    Thanks
    Gustavo

Actually I was already happy with the storage of my media files on QNAP T209, until (again) it happened:
All of a sudden I cannot access my QNAP by Finder anymore. E.g.: I do see the main directory Public-iTunes - and that's it. I cannot see any of the files in the directory via Finder. Checking with XP notebook - all filed where they should be. Same happens to my iPhoto library...
Is there anybody having an idea? any settings for network somewhere???
Updated T209 OS - no improvement
Contacted Hotline, nice guy, immidiate response, but did not find the problem...
What is curious also: iTunes does find the files and delivers the music
    My network:
    Airport Extreme
    wired to NAS
    wired to iMAC
    wired to Printer
    wired to ADSL
    wireless to AppleTV
    wireless to Notebooks
Depending on workload of server and network sometimes streaming of music is interrupted (while copying large files=

  • How do I connect my Synology NAS to my AirPort Extreme base station?

I'm considering replacing an Apple AirPort Extreme base station with my current 5 year old router.  I would appreciate if someone could tell me how the AirPort Extreme differs from any regular router.  I do not have any OS X devices, but I have a lot of iOS devices.  If my understanding is correct, I can set up the AirPort from an iOS device.
Also, I need to know how I would connect my Synology NAS system to the AirPort Extreme network via an Ethernet cable.  I would need to be able to acces the files on the NAS through Windows clients.  My Synology NAS currently has a web interface....would I still be able to access that web interface with the AirPort?
Thanks for all your help in advance as I am VERY new with networking devices.

I would appreciate if someone could tell me how the AirPort Extreme differs from any regular router.
The AirPort Extreme is a combination router, wireless access point, and Ethernet switch. It also provides both external USB hard drive and printer sharing. So, it is not much different than most other routers on the market today. The one main difference is how you administer it. Unlike most other routers that employ a web-based administration interface, the AirPorts use a dedicated utility, called the AirPort Utility.
I do not have any OS X devices, but I have a lot of iOS devices.  If my understanding is correct, I can set up the AirPort from an iOS device.
Yes. There are versions of the AirPort Utility for OS X, Windows, or iOS devices.
Also, I need to know how I would connect my Synology NAS system to the AirPort Extreme network via an Ethernet cable.  I would need to be able to acces the files on the NAS through Windows clients.  My Synology NAS currently has a web interface....would I still be able to access that web interface with the AirPort?
Your Synology NAS would connect to the AirPort Extreme pretty much the same as for any other manufacturer's routers. That is, you would connect it to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) ports on the Extreme. You would still use the same web-based interface as before.
Note: When connected to an Ethernet port, the NAS would still function as usual. The AirPort Extreme would not provide any file sharing functionality when connected in this manner. All file sharing features would be the responsibility of the NAS device.

  • Windows 8.1 to Synology NAS (DS2413+) - SMB 20MB/s but HTTP 100MB/s?!

    Hello all,
Using the normal Windows 8.1 file sharing (SMB) on a high-end laptop with a mapped drive to a shared folder on my new Synology NAS (DS2413+), I get approximately 20MB/s speed... which is so slow the NAS is pretty much useless in my office as we need to
move terabytes of data and don't have much time to do it. If I transfer the exact same file from the same laptop using the Synology's web interface "File Station" (HTTP), the speed is approximately 100MB/s! We can live with 100MB/s. File Station
is really not an option for us though because we need the Windows file sharing stuff like mapped drive letters.
The laptop is plugged directly into the NAS with a network cable... there is no switch involved. I can replicate this behavior consistently - 20MB/s using Windows file sharing (SMB) and 100MB/s using File Station (HTTP.) I've tried everything I can think of
on the laptop after a couple days of troubleshooting and could really use some help. Hopefully someone else has run into this and solved it?
Some of the troubleshooting stuff I've done includes deleting the network adapter on the Windows 8.1 laptop and reinstalling it, to make sure I hadn't screwed up any default settings... nothing changed with the speeds, but I think that's a moot point because
transferring files is 5x faster with HTTP than SMB, so the network connection itself is fine. I have also enabled SMB2 on the NAS and confirmed with the PowerShell cmdlet "Get-SmbConnection" that SMB2 is being used.

    Hi Mysticron,
As we have issue in use SMB, please take the following steps to fix this issue:
    1. Deploy High-speed Networking Features
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4872
    2. Enable Receive Window Auto-Tuning
    3. Disable SMB Signing
