New applications appear with .app in Applications folder

All new apps I've installed appear as appname.app in the Applications folder on the dock.
I want these to appear with just the app name, not the extension, but where can I change the shortcut name?
transparency is good, what's happened here?
thx kindly

Finder -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Show Filename Extensions'.

  • New applications folder

    Hi,
I would like to create a new folder in the Applications folder to store lots of utilities - as they clutter up the main Applications folder. However, when I do this the apps sometimes don't start. Is there a configuration file that I need to add the path of this new applications folder so that leopard knows to look there to start apps?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Another option is to use spotlight to open applications. I'm a fast typer so I've noticed its faster for me to type in the name of something rather than navigate for it in the Applications folder. You can also use some handy spotlight flags to limit your search.
    Here's some examples:
Disk Utility, inside the Applications/Utilities folder, type this into spotlight:
    disk kind:app
    MS Word:
    word kind:app
The kind:app flag limits the results to applications only. So I have all my Apps in the Applications folder then just open them from spotlight instead.

  • Re-Assign CMD-SHIFT A to a new Applications folder

It must be Friday as I've really done something stupid.
I couldn't set how my Applications folder opens. So, I figured I'd just make a new Applications folder, move everything over and toss the old one. It made so much sense at the time. But, now cmd-shift A doesn't call the folder at all. Is there a way to re-set this?
I feel really stupid. No need to tell me how st00pid I am.

I'd drag that folder to my desktop and rename it "old applications". Then reinstall "Applications" from the Tiger install DVD and update with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.

  • New Applications folder window opens always half outside the screen

As in the subject, only the first time after a log-in or finder restarting, when i press shiftA to open a new window of applications folder, it opens always in the same ugly position, i.e., on my right side of the desktop, half out of it, half inside. This happens only with this folder. If after restarting finder, restarting the mac, log-out log-in, I press +N to open a new window, it opens correctly on the center of the screen. If I try to grab the new applications window either in the center of the screen or in whatever position I want, next log-in, reboot, etc... it opens in the ugly position as I mentioned.
I tried deleting .Ds_Store file in it, deleting com.apple.finder.plist, repairing permissions (both in leopard and by using the installation dvd), clearing caches, executing maintainance tasks, searching google, asking in it.comp.macintosh, praise the lord, but nothing. Now I'm going crazy, so I need to solve this.
Ps: Maybe this problem start when I installed magnifique. It's an applications that let you change leopard themes (since shapeshifter works only on 10.4). I uninstalled after two days, being shure to delete its preference files and any other stuff that could have been reconducted to it, but the problem is still there. I tried creating a new user and the problem still exists.

Hm, I guess that makes sense - the idea is to save power; but the process of trying to transfer control between display interfaces on the fly would have to be somewhat perilous.  This (hot swap of display interfaces) is just not the kind of thing that would normally be expected by software designers.
Are the two display subsystems made by nVidia?  If not, I'd imagine it to be a practically impossible task to get right.  GPU makers aren't normally friendly with one another!
It makes sense that a manual switch to the more powerful GPU would be needed to run Photoshop properly, as complex as it is.

  • Sending a new iPhone Abroad with apps "pre-loaded", I don't have the SIM

    Hey,
I've just recently bought 2 iPhone 4S phones, white and black,
One is for me and one for my girlfriend which is now travelling the far east,
I have mine all set up just the way i want it, her's is still in the box,
I would like to send it to her but i would also like to install the applications that she is used too from her old iPhone 3GS,
I don't have her SIM card, she has the SIM card in her possesion now on the old iPhone 3GS she's currently using,
My Question is, Can i install applications on her device with her itunes ID (she gave me her ID) without a SIM card?
Or as an alternative, use itunes with her account logged in and choose apps to be installed after she starts using her device?
Another alternative would be to insert my SIM card (from my own iPhone 4S) to her iPhone 4S and set it up for her to use it?
While she travels she doesn't carry a laptop with her, so it's important for me that she will receive the iPhone with the apps that she asked me to install for her without the need for her to use a PC/Laptop.
btw, she has WiFi available freely where she stays.
Off Topic: I've upgraded from 3GS and the 4S is amazing so far ;-) so i bought one for her too.
    Thanks
    Avi

The problem you face is that you need a sim card to activate the 4S...you can't do anything with any iPhone until it is first activated. While you could use your sim card to do this, that won't really help her because the 3GS uses a full size sim & the 4S uses a micro sim. Thus, she won't be able to just swap her sim in the new phone. She could try cutting her current sim down, but if she screws things up...well she's got no service at all. If you got a micro sim for her & activated it, her current phone would stop working. Thus, I really don't see a good solution here.

  • TS3274 Deleting Disabled AppleID and using a new that works with apps gotten with disabled apple ID

I gave my iPad 2 to someone to download some apps for me.The guy used his apple ID to download the apps.the apple ID used is now disabled. I want to be able to use my new apple ID to update all apps downloaded including the ones downloaded using the initial ID.

Content is tied to the account that originally downloaded/bought it, and it can't be copied or transferred to a different account - delete the apps that weren't downloaded with your account and then buy/download your own copies of them

  • App folder in the dock doesn't contain all the apps in the main Applications folder

I have noticed recently that the App folder in the dock doesn't contain all the apps in the main Applications folder (the correct one under Macintosh HD).
This occurs whether in list, grid, automatic or whatever.
I've removed the apps folder from the dock and dragged in the current one and yet it doesn't show all the apps from the source folder.
Any ideas on why this is happening or how I can fix it?
There are 55 items in the Apps folder but only 51 are shown in the folder located in the dock.
If I drag it over (as per normal operation), all 55 should appear right?
Is there a limit on how many can be displayed?
Can the grid spacing/icon size be changed to fit them all in if that's the case?
Just dunno why this is happening???
    Cheers

Not sure this is what you want, but if you are an admin user, try this instead. Right-click on /Applications (Applications in the hard drive icon folder, the root folder, not Applications in your user) and select Make Alias, then drag that alias into the Dock to the right of or below the divider (the Trash icon is in that area.) Your Applications will now open from that alias in the Dock. The "original" alias will remain in that location, while creating a new Applications folder in the Dock. I have done this for my home folder, Utilities, and Downloads as well.

  • After installing Mavericks I can't change or delete anything from my Applications folder

Just like said above after I installed Mavericks I cant change anything from my applications folder without typing in my password..... This wasnt like this before and its realling getting annoying... Move anything to trash make a folder move apps between folders etc....

Looks like we can't move them any more. The best solution seems to be to create aliases of the apps in a new Applications folder with the organization we prefer, and substitute this folder with the System Applications folder in the dock.
I've done it, and it's a good hack. Look like changing location of the Apps was causing trouble down the road for updates, etc. As for requesting the password with every move, my computer was asking me for it even before Mavericks; it's just control to ensure you don't make changes the Admin would not approve. I don't know if you can get rid of it in previous OS versions.

  • Applications Folder Madness!

I was using my computer last night and all of my applications stopped working. I checked the trash and my applications folder somehow ended up in there! Maybe I was deleting files with apple + delete and the folder was selected, but I don't know for certain how it got there. So I clicked on the applications alias on my desktop, but nothing was in there. I then clicked on the applications folder on a finder window sidebar, and it asked me to choose an application to open "Applications." what!? I then took the applications folder from the trash and placed it in the finder window sidebar. It did not ask me to replace it, but rather just left both folders there. The applications now all work, but the working Applications folder with the "A" on it is just a standard blue folder now. So then I tried logging into my guest account, but none of the applications are working, and they all show up as question marks in the dock. You cannot run any application in the guest user account. I have tried repairing permissions and deleting all cache files with the program cocktail. Still nothing. Is there a way to tell os x that this "new" applications folder is the folder that contains all my apps?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
The Applications folder needs to be at the top level of your HD, along with "System", "Library" and "Users". You need to drag it out of the Trash and put it there (or retrieve it from wherever else you managed to put it).
The sidebar icons are just aliases, as are the Dock icons, and they are account specific which is why they are not available to other user accounts. Get the Applications folder back where it belongs, and it will be available to all accounts again.

  • Applications folder in Finder

I somehow made the Applications folder disappear from the Finder sidebar.
There's still an Applications folder, of course. I can get at it through finder/Go/Applications.
I put an Applications folder for my desktop. It works. But if I make a new Applications folder for the Finder sidebar and move the desktop folder to trash, no apps will work because "[app] is in the trash."
When I try Shift/Apple/A to go the Application folder in Finder, it shows only a Utilities folder in my Applications window.
Any ideas on restoring the status quo ante, with the original Applications window in the Finder sidebar and no window on the desktop or in the trash?
    Thanks!
iMac (Power PC) iSight 20" 2.1G   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi James
It sounds like you might have moved all your applications into the folder that's on your desktop, for one thing. First, close all your open applications (except for Finder). If any of them are still in the trash, get them out, and move them all back to the correct location. While many applications will work fine wherever they are, it's a good idea to keep them in the main Applications folder at the top of the hard drive.
Once the apps are back where they should be (and the desktop folder is empty), trash the desktop folder. Then, open a new Finder window, and click on the Macintosh HD icon in the sidebar. You should see your Applications folder on the right, which you can now pull into the sidebar to create a shortcut.

  • N82 Applications folder missing

    Hi All.
I am having a problem with my N82 Applications folder. The applications folder in my phone was deleted and everything that was inside it was thrown into the main menu. I created a new applications folder and put everything back inside, but everytime i install a new applicationit is put in the main menu.
Is there a way i can restore the application folder? I reinstalled the firmware but that did not work. Please help.
    Regards.

The Applications folder on the dock is a shortcut, or more specifically, an alias.
It sounds like what you did was to drag the Applications item from the Finder sidebar...which is also an alias. By dragging it from the sidebar, it's as if you'd dragged an icon off the dock. It poofs and disappears.
To get them back, open a Finder window and navigate to Macintosh HD (or whatever you've named your hard drive). At the root level of the drive lives your Applications folder (the actual folder, not an alias). Drag that one to the sidebar to replace that shortcut, and drag it again to the Dock to replace that shortcut as well.
If you click on Macintosh HD and all you see are System, Library, and Users and have no Applications folder, then something terrible has happened.

  • Standard-level user application folder

I have two users on my machine, one is Admin user and i never log in to that one.  The other one is a standard user where i do all my work and is the user i access everything im on the machine.
I am trying to install an application but the only option is to install for all users.  I really don't want to do this.  Is there a way i can only install applications for my standard-level user?  Or is this something that is installer-specific?
When i go to my current user's home directory i don't even see Application folder in there.  I imagine this is because i never installed an application specific to this user.  I even tried creating a new Applications folder for my user and re-running the installer but i still only get same option to install for all users.

Thanks (I'm an idiot).  I got it moved but when i try to open it from the user Application folder it doesn't open.  Oh well, looks like VirtualBox is one of 'those' applications.  Thanks for helping!
Not an idiot at all. Seems to be an issue with VirtualBox being incompatable with Mavericks. Hopefully an update will be forthcoming.

  • Clicking "Mail" opens Applications Folder

This used to happen sometimes on Tiger, on a different machine.
Clicking on Mail in the doc doesn't open Mail, but does open a new Applications folder window.
Restarting fixes it (so far) but it's worrying.
Why does Mail keep doing things like this?

With Mail open, please click on Mail in the menubar, choose About Mail, and report the exact info that results as regards version -- I doubt this is a problem, but must be confirmed before moving on.
One thing to try would be to quit Mail, drag the Icon from the Dock to go "Poof", and then open Mail from its Icon in the Applications folder. Then control-click on the resulting Icon in the Dock, Options and select Keep in Dock.

  • Distribution vs. Application Folder - repost from 3.x Group

We are new to TED. We have thirteen sites that we are going to replicate Apps to. Currently, we have manually (some ZENith) copied our apps to an existing container (Applications) under each location's context (which are partitions). So in other words each site has it's own set of apps and it's own application Folder object.
We have set up a new container at each site to facilitate our "target context" for the new, GOLD apps, and new Application Folder (same structure as the existing). WE have done some manual tests of having a USER object associated to an App that reside's in our specific site's Target area, in which the app is associated to the App folder object in this area. The result is that the User receives a combo of the two Application folders---User has a app associated in the Target area, and an app in the existing site's "applications" container.
The source context (partition) is in our Corp Office, and copies of the replica are only at that site. In the Source context, we also have an Application Folder. Our assumption is that we have to make that folder association in this context, to be able to replicate that same associate to the Target.
We need some direction or further explanation of Application Folder usage in the TED system.

you can have as many app folders as you like, TED will only add or modify
    but not delete existing associations

  • 2nd Application Folder

    The other day I found a second Application Folder in 'Home' (which is empty) and the proper one is under "Macintosh HD" I don't remember seeing this before and my question is;
Did I create a new Application Folder by accident?
or could it be due to Malware?
It seems unusual that the folder is empty and the computer's been acting a bit strange
    Thanks for any help

Thanks for your help, that makes me feel so much more at ease. Yes I recently installed a program
However, I wish these "stupid machines" would only have "Guest User" accounts if you create one. Every time you do something you have to type in the password. They just assume these machines are going to be used in an office where there are numerous people. But there's only one person in this "office" LOL
