New April 2009 imac firewire
I have one of the new 2009 imacs that have one fire wire port. I have been reading the groups and have some questions:
1. is this an 800 firewire ports?
2. I have an old 8mm mini tape camera and I have used it to transfer video from the camera into my macbook with no problems using an apple firewire cable that had a really small end for my camera (4 pin?) and the other end was larger and more rectangular to the macbook port. (6 pin??) This rectangular end will not fit in the new imac... Do I need a new cable?
3. If I need a new cable...what would the cable be...4 pin to 9 pin?
4. Since my camera is older will the video still transfer using an 800 Firewire cable? I have had several macs that this camera has worked for video transfers into imovie using previous firewires cables.
Thanks
is this an 800 firewire ports?
Yes.
Do I need a new cable?
Yes, or an adaptor.
4 pin to 9 pin?
Yes.
Since my camera is older will the video still transfer using an 800 Firewire cable?
Yes.

I have tried installing an M Audio project mix on my late 2009 imac and its not recognised, tech support seems to think its the FireWire input on the mac. If I buy a repeater hub, will this work?
I have the correct drivers and firmware yet its not working
Have tried at 400 to 800 cable as well as an adapter with original cableHi Tommy,
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what shows there?
If it says something like no FW detected...
Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device. A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
1. Shut the machine down.
2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
3. leave it for 10 minutes.
4. Connect back up and reboot.

Should I buy the new (early 2009) iMac 2.93 GHz or 3.06 GHz processor?
The heavier applications I'll be using are Final Cut Studio and Photoshop/Illustrator (not so much for video games).
Would there be a significant difference between the 2.93 GHz processor and the 3.06 GHz one? If so, where/when/how will I notice it?
I'm already planning on the ATI 4850 graphics card. The only thing I don't know enough about is the processor.
Thank you!Snow Leopard aims to change this, but as far as I know, only the CPU is involved in decoding/encoding video/audio, editing photos, etc. I would assume that 3D apps use the GPU to help with the rendering process, but this is an assumption and not based on experience (they could just as likely use the CPU only). The GPU is used for drawing your screen. In a game, it's critical. Running "productivity" apps, however, the GPU is largely unused. Snow Leopard will supposedly implement a system that allows the OS to pass information to the GPU to be processing, using some of those unused cycles. Whether this happens or not remains to be seen.

Hello, I have a 2009 iMac, and my harddrive has failed several times now.
I tired to reinstall snow leopard with the install DVD that came with my iMac. However the disc is damaged so I bought a new Snow Leopard but my iMac wont read the new disc, it just stays in the apple logo screen, I have tired safe boot, holding down the "C" key on startup and tried using disc utility but getting nowhere.
Please help. Thanks.Might be related, if your hard drive is a 1TB drive,it could be a Seagate drive.
The drives are known to fail and your iMac maybe covered for free replacement under the Apple's Seagate hard drive replacement program until April 12 of this year.
I Believe the 2009 models are covered under this replacement warranty.
You can find out if you are eligible here.

How can I make a recovery disk for an imac 24 " early 2008 to April 2009 or connect via thunderbolt to another imacimac 24 " or connect via thunderbolt to another imac
annYou will only know about the hard drive when you try to access it in TDM from your other computer. If you cannot boot into TDM mode or if the drive does not appear on the new computer's Desktop then it is likely bad.
What you are thinking about as a recovery disk is the Recovery HD normally created when you install Lion or later on the computer. You boot from it as follows:
Boot Using Command+R keys:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears. -
Best way to transfer from late 2009 iMac to new iMac
I have a new iMac, and want to transfer 750MB of data from my late 2009 iMac when I set it up. It seems like the options are:
Not Thunderbolt <-> Thunderbolt, since the late 2009 iMac has a MiniDP port, not a Thunderbolt port.
FireWire 800 <-> Thunderbolt using my Apple FW/TB adapter. Should give 800Mbps?
Direct Ethernet connection (just a cable, no router). Does this work? Should give 1000Mbps?
Ethernet through my new Time Capsule. Lets me access the internet during setup. How much speed loss compared to direct connection?
Any thoughts or suggestions about the best choice?

How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I installed a Barracuda 500 gb drive. When I attempted a reinstall based off an external hard drive using time machine, it showed an error message of not being able to complete the back up. This was after I formatted the new drive using disc utility. I reformatted a different external drive and let it make several back ups. I then put the new drive into the machine and now I only get the folder with the question mark. It is a late 2009 iMac. The OS updates have been through the on line store and I do not have back up discs. Everything SHOULD be backed up on my external.
when you partition and format the new bare drive are you running off of an install disc in the optical drive? I have used the install disk for Leopard to access the Disc Utility (did not install Leapard, just used it to access the Disc Utility) as well as the machine prompting me to take action due to the new hard drive being recognized, again using disc utility and using the install disc provided by the hard drive manufacturer. All of these were done according to instruction as previously mentioned, on a reformatted and partitioned drive each time.
What OS version are you nstalling on the bare drive before you attempt to restore from your Time Machine backup? I have not installed any OS on the bare drive. I do not have a copy of Lion 10.7.5 as I purchased it through the app store. I was under the impression I could reinstall all the data through Time Machine but that is proving elusive - frustrating.
Are you trying to use the Time Machine "star wars" interface to restore or are you using Migration Assistant? I am not using migration assistant. I have been using the Time Machine restore application. -
where can I buy a new 3.5" SATA HDD with the extra thermal sensor port for my late 2009 imac?
Depends on the original drive. According to OWC, at least last time I checked some months ago, any current WD drive they sell (up to 2 TB?) will be able to be swapped directly. I am unable to confirm this personally. But, even so, that was a while back. You should check with them again on this. As for Seagates, that might not be so simple.
This is the original article on this from them.
http://blog.macsales.com/2751-proprietary-cable-can-put-the-brakes-on-upgrading- late-09-imacs
If you find a drive that OWC sells and is certain will swap in directly, you can see if newegg.com has it for less.
This one that OWC sells will swap in directly, according to them.

Which Firewire Cable to Connect Drobo S to 24" Early 2009 iMac? Thank you.
Hello Support Communities,
Which Firewire cable do I need to connect a Drobo S to a 24" early 2009 iMac?
Firewire 800? Firewire 400? 8 pin? 9 pin? 6 pin?
Thank you.The iMac has Firewire 800 it is a 9 pin connector as shown…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1394
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Firewire800.jpg
Wikipedia also says the Drobo S has Firewire 800 & USB2
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drobo
A Firewire 9 pin to Firewire 9 pin cable should be fine, otherwise you could use USB2 but it is slower & less reliable than FW 800 in my opinion. -

New 2009 iMacs Have 2.1 Speaker System?
Do the new 2009 iMacs have a 2.1 speaker system like the Apple LED Cinema Display? If not, does anyone know why not? It would be weird for Apple to have advanced that design, only to stick with old technology in the new iMacs.
Read AppleInsider's review of the Apple LED Cinema Display:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/07/applesled_cinema_display_thereview.html&page=3
They clearly state:
"The LED Cinema Display uses the iMac's trick of piping sound through the bottom and bouncing it towards you. Surprisingly, though, it's actually a 2.1-channel setup with a dedicated internal subwoofer instead of the iMac's 2.0-only design. For internal speakers, they're much more appealing than those on the iMac or for most any other display saddled with often significantly underpowered stereo speakers meant only to satisfy office workers who just need enough to hear voice chats."
However small it is, the LED Cinema Display has some sort of woofer. I was wondering if the new iMacs had one too, but I guess not. -
How do i Use my old 2009 imac as a monitor for my new 27 inch 2014 iMac?
Just got the 2014 27-inch iMac, and i have a 2009 iMac as well as a ViewSonic Monitor with a Thunderbolt adaptor.
Is it possible with the 2 Thunderbolt display ports to have 2 extra monitors?...So far on the ViewSonic works. I tried to use Migration Assistant to Transfer files, and the 2014 saw the other computer, but the 2009 just kept looking for a connection while it was connected by Thunderbolt.
At a local Mac store, i asked this question, and when they confirmed the the 2014 had 2 Thunderbolt ports, that i would be able to use the old iMac and an additional monitor.
Please Help,
Thank YouThis article should help http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924

Late 2009 imac as second display for new (late 2012) imac. How to?
I have a late 2009 imac 27 that I would like to use as a second display for my late 2012 imac 27. Has anybody connected them successfully? I am getting very mixed information on the topic.
Thank you. Here's where my confusion comes in
"iMac (Mid 2011) and later: target Display Mode does not work with Mini DisplayPort cable"
Symptoms
When you attempt to connect an iMac (21.5-inch or 27-inch, Mid 2011) and later to another computer with a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, the screen of the target iMac will not become an external display when you press Command-F2 to activate Target Display Mode.
Resolution
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) computers do not support Target Display Mode via Mini DisplayPort cables.
