New arch installation, problems with dual monitors

tldr: nvidia setting are not saving when when I leave a session.
yesterday I wiped my computer and went from ubuntu to arch on my desktop (been using arch on laptop for a while). I'm having problems getting my dual monitor settings to save. I configure the settings via nvidia server settings and it works fine but when I go to reboot or log out it goes back down to just one screen and I have reset up nvidia.
gdm has never seen both monitors its always just the single screen.
software
nvidia drivers 280.13
xfce4 v4.8.0
gdm 3.0.4-2
kernal 3.0-arch
my system is up to date with a yaourt -Syu
Sorry if this has been answered but my googlefoo was not strong today.

GDM *should* use a xorg.conf if it exists.... I also noticed that Arch keeps a xorg.conf.d folder, which I'm not sure the nvidia-settings app knows how to handle.
Also, make sure you are running the nvidia-settings app with root privileges, as you'll need those to write a xorg.conf in /etc/X11.

  • Screen Sharing problem with dual monitors in 10.6

    When I'm using Screen Sharing from my Macbook to my iMac with dual displays (10.6.1 on both machines) It works fine when I initially connect, but when I switch to Display 1, it shows me Display 1, but though my cursor moves, I can't click on anything. It won't let me go back to viewing both displays either, and changing from Adaptive to Full Quality or vice-versa makes no difference, as does Scaling. This happens whether I'm on my local network or using Back-to-my-Mac. It was working fine under Leopard, but has been exhibiting this behavior since the 10.6 upgrade.

    This is a very irritating bug. One thing that has worked for me a couple of times (I think a couple of times it also didn't work) is to turn on mirroring. Screen sharing then only shows one monitor, since they are both the same. I'm not sure if the monitors have to have the same resolution for this to work, mine do. The nice thing about this is that before quitting the screen sharing app you can just turn mirroring off again and it will go back to normal. It's easiest to do this by enabling the 'show displays in menu bar' in your displays preferences.

  • Big Problems with Dual Monitors

    I am running a Mac Pro with the Nvidia graphics card. I did boot camp to intall windows, but later decided to remove the partition adn install parallels. The problem is thaton the mac side when I place a monitor on the second port, all my screens do is flash blue and never show up. I tired reinstalling the os, and this didn't fix it. I have 2 20 in apple cinima screens, but I can't use them both becasue when I plug the second one in both of my screens go away (flashing blue on and off). How can I fix this? it is real problem.

    Have you also tried setting up dual display using the windows settings instead of the NV control panel?
    Also (and this one is obvious, but worth checking)...if your HDMI display has multiple inputs (DVI, VGA, HDMI, etc.), make sure you have it set to the correct input.
    I'm guessing the issue is with the HDMI display.  Is there any way you can try a DP monitor instead of the HDMI monitor?  That could help narrow the problem even further.  Nvidia is very particular about the cable adapters/dongles that they claim support for with their cards.  The one we sell is officially supported (made by Bizlink).

  • Full Screen Problem With Dual Monitor Viewing

    I have a 64 Bit system, Chrome browser and with flash player built in.  I am attempting to view videos on a 2nd monitor while working on the primary monitor.  I have tried this on various sites, TNT.tv, USANetworks.com, etc...  I select full screen viewing.  A message is displayed to exit full screen press escape.  However, when I attempt to do anything else automatically exit full screen on the second monitor.   This should not be an issue and with the way most people view video online, they are doing so on a 2nd monitor or TV.  I have done a google search and it is a common problem, but there is no solution that seems to work.

    I have just posted the same question - missed yours.
    Adobe could you take a look into this - I think solving this problem can't be that hard.

  • Problem with dual monitors - unresponsiveness and shut down

    Hello there!
    I've been happily using a 2010 Mac Pro since March with a Radeon 5870 card and two Apple displays connected to the card with mini-displayport cables.
    Recently, after I installed Lion, the secondary screen has been acting strangely; sometimes, while I can move my cursor without any problem on it, I can't click on anything. I click and the program, such as Apple Mail or Reason, just doesn't respond in any way. Moving the program window to the main screen solves the problem.
    Moreover the secondary monitor sometimes shuts down for a second, displacing in the meantime all my windows to the main one. It always comes back instantly.
    Finally, when I use Windows 7 the secondary screen isn't even recognized anymore; it stays black and windows doesn't see it.
    I tried of course to unplug and reconnect both monitors a few times but the problem, which in Lion is sporadic, remains.
    Any ideas?

    There ARE problems hooking up multiple DVI displays. But Mini DisplayPort displays are supposed to "just work" according to this article:
    Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
    The other issue some users have is not completely seating those Mini DisplayPort cables or adapters. The connector must be inserted into the jack until essentially ALL of the metal part disappears.

  • Skype notifications problem with dual monitors

    A few days ago I did a fresh install of arch on my laptop (intel graphics) and since then when I am using 2 monitors, one 1366x768(primary-right) and the other 1920x1080, Skype notifications that are supposed to be shown on the primary monitor do not appear at all. From what I read, they do appear but off-screen, as if the primary monitor was 1920x1080. Any ideas what may be causing this issue?

  • Problem w Dual Monitors on ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB

    Hi I'm having problems with Dual Monitors on ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB, Mac Pro 2009.
    Setup: I'm running two 27" DELL U2713HM Displays at 2560x1440 one via direct DVI cable and the other one thru the Mini Display Port via Dual Link DVI adapter.
    Now when I boot up the left screen displays the start-up apple as it should but then both screens go black and the right one (DVI connection) comes on while the left one stays black, goes into power safe mode. When I go into preferences > Displays I even get only one single display as if there were no multiple connected. It's however NOT a connection problem, since it works during the boot up sequence.
    Any idea what might be wrong with my set-up? Do I need a new graphics card?

    You do have the dual-link adopter connected to USB power right?
    Next I would try using a displayport to mini displayport cable. You monitors have:
    Connectors VGA, 4 x USB 3.0, DVI-D (HDCP), HDMI, DisplayPort 1.2,
    That cable is about $10

  • Unwanted keyboard shortcut with dual monitors

    Problem:
    I have a computer setup with dual monitors (desktop extended). When I have a window open, e.g., Microsoft Word 2007, after I type "1" on the keyboard, the Word Window and mouse relocate to the second monitor. When I type "2" the Word window and mouse relocate
    to the main monitor. In the word document, 1 and 2 are typed in the document, but pushing the keys still move the window and mouse to the opposing monitor.
    I checked the keyboard settings within Windows and found that sticky keys and such are not enabled. The keyboard has no such features to enable. I also checked the display setup in display properties and found nothing that would indicate such a setup. Google
    searches return nothing related to my problem.
    What I do know:
    -The rest of the numbers on the keyboard work fine. Pressing 1 and 2 on the number pad at the far right of the keyboard do not transfer the active window to the second monitor. Those keys work fine.
    -The type of window does not matter. Using notepad, word, excel, internet explorer, sticky notes; all of those windows would transfer to the opposing monitor when I push 1 and 2.
    Setup:
    Windows XP
    Dual-Monitor
    Wireless Keyboard and mouse

    This pertains to StarTech DVI to USB adapters.
    There's an icon in your system tray near the clock, either super utility or usb display device. Right click, and select multi display control panel.

  • My new Arch - Dropbox problem

    Hello Arch community,
    I just spent the last 2-3 days installing, downloading, reading this forum and the wiki and configuring my new Arch installation on my Dell Studio 1557 and I now have a nice fast little gnome environment that fits my needs
    First of all: Arch Linux is really great. I've been a pure Windows user for the last few years and I tried out some linux stuff on my notebook lately. Arch Linux was the only one that really gave me the chance to build my own system without hours of compiling and without having tons of crap installed that I don't use. I'm not totally finished yet, but that is another thing...
    Now I have one problem that bugs me atm:
    I installed Dropbox from the AUR (not the nautilus version) and it basically works... but only if i start it after networkmanager has established my wireless connection
    Right now it's like: Dropbox starts, tries to connect... wireless connection ist not established yet -> no connection possible; Then networkmanager is doing his work and connects to my wireless network -> connection ist there, but Dropbox resides in the "Connecting" state and it doesn't change -> no sync. I have to stop and restart it, then it instantly connects and syncs my folder.
    Is there any (easy) way to make Dropbox start after connecting to the wireless network?
    PS: Please excuse any grammatical mistakes, my native language is german

    Woohoo!!! Many many thanks! I was plagued by this issue, and this worked superbly for me.... I just modified the script a little for error checking like you mentioned - with a `ps ax' to check for whether dropbox is running before trying to kill it. I love the fact that the script would restart dropbox in the event of a connection loss/reconnection. The modified script is as follows:
    #!/bin/sh
    # Copyright 2008 Evenflow, Inc., 2010 Dropbox
    # Environment script for the dropbox executable.
    start_dropbox() {
    PAR=$(dirname $(readlink -f $0))
    OLD_LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$PAR:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    TMP1=`ps ax|grep dropbox|grep -v grep`
    if [ -n "$TMP1" ]; then
    kill -9 $(pidof dropbox) >/dev/null 2>&1
    fi
    exec $PAR/dropbox $@ &
    do_dropbox() {
    start_dropbox >/dev/null 2>&1
    while [ 1 ]; do
    sleep 5
    ERROR="$(net_test)"
    if [ -n "$ERROR" ]; then
    LAST_ERROR=1
    else
    if [ -n "$LAST_ERROR" ]; then
    # Connection seems to be up but last cycle was down
    LAST_ERROR=""
    start_dropbox >/dev/null 2>&1
    fi
    fi
    done
    net_test() {
    TMP1="$(ifconfig |grep "inet addr:" |grep -v "127.0.0.1")"
    [ -z "$TMP1" ] && echo "error"
    do_dropbox
    Many thanks also to varg04444 for suggesting his very simple script - I did not go with that only because it would not restart dropbox in the event of a reconnection.
    Since ifconfig is deprecated now, I made a small change in the script to use ip command instead:
    #copyright 2008 Evenflow, Inc., 2010 Dropbox
    # Environment script for the dropbox executable.
    start_dropbox() {
    PAR=$(dirname $(readlink -f $0))
    OLD_LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$PAR:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    TMP1=`ps ax|grep dropbox|grep -v grep`
    if [ -n "$TMP1" ]; then
    kill -9 $(pidof dropbox) >/dev/null 2>&1
    fi
    exec $PAR/dropbox $@ &
    do_dropbox() {
    start_dropbox >/dev/null 2>&1
    while [ 1 ]; do
    sleep 5
    ERROR="$(net_test)"
    if [ -n "$ERROR" ]; then
    LAST_ERROR=1

    if [ -n "$LAST_ERROR" ]; then
    # Connection seems to be up but last cycle was down
    LAST_ERROR=""

    fi
    done
    net_test() {
    TMP1="$(ip addr |grep "inet " |grep -v "127.0.0.1")"
    [ -z "$TMP1" ] && echo "error"

    Extra Notes: I have another desktop session with awesome installed(uninstalled now) and could log into that no problem. Awesome was giving me troubles so I uninstalled it. I have 2 gnome desktop sessions, my regular gnome session(the one that crashes), and the other with no window manager(never crashed on startup).
    I installed awesome around the same time as configuring the dual monitor setup.
    Thanks.

    Update.
    The crashes are to be expected now. I'm circumventing the whole thing by logging into my other Gnome session without a window manager, logging out and then logging back into my regular Gnome with Metacity.
    I've noticed the tty1 sessions(not sure what's it's called) is strange. Apparently my session runs on tty8 but when I try logging in, it'll crash me and tty7 gives me a blank screen with a blinking underscore. The other tty1s work regularly. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.
    Is there a way to just reset the Gnome settings?

  • [SOLVED] openbox margins with dual monitors

    Hi community,
    I have stumbled to a nasty problem on my first incursion to dual monitors in openbox.
    I'm using xrandr with this command (which works just fine BTW):
    xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --primary --output VGA-0 --mode 1280x1024_60.00 --gamma 1.0:1.4:0.85 --right-of LVDS
    and have set a Virtual screen in xorg.conf of 2560 x 1024 pixels.
    But, my laptop monitor only handles 1280x800, while my external LCD monitor has 1280x1024, so there is a virtual area under my laptop screen which i'm not using, but i dont really care about that.
    The problem is that when I'm setting screen margins, so that maximized windows will respect the panels in the bottom (tint2), in rc.xml (or by obconf) the margins are applied to the virtual screen and only are practical on the external monitor wich has more pixel height.
    I'm really missing some kind of per monitor margin settings in openbox, maybe there is and i haven't found it? It makes me wonder because openbox can maximize windows to a single monitor, even if the whole layout it's treated like a virtual screen, so it has some way of distinguishing between them.
    I would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

    TL;DR - I'm not aware of any acceptable solution at the moment.
    Basically, what you're having problems with, is the "dead area." It can really be quite a pain in the butt if window managers or other screen aware applications don't anticipate it properly. To my knowledge, Openbox doesn't support margins on a monitor-by-monitor basis. In reality, you shouldn't need to be setting margins anyway. Tint2 should be reporting itself as a taskbar, and Openbox should be respecting that.
    I have dead area too, with multiple monitors, and Openbox respects both of the KDE taskbars I have running (one on each monitor). (I use KDE and simply replaced Kwin with Openbox.) This tells me that tint2 should be able to cooperate with Openbox. I remember trying tint2 a while ago, and didn't fine it adequate in a dual monitor environment (it was probably a year ago or so). tint2 would need to be setting the _NET_WM_STRUT_PARTIAL hint, and I'm not sure if it is (or if it's doing it properly). See http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spe … #id2507618
    Also, I do know that the developer for Openbox recently got a dual monitor setup, and she's been adding additional support for dual monitors a little at a time. Hopefully with 3.5, there will be a lot more support. (Margin support for multiple monitors would be great, because it could be a good utility knife for applications that don't care about multi-monitors setups and don't set the proper hints.)
    If you're capable of modifying tint2, my course of action would be to try something that works (like the KDE taskbars) and record the hints being set there. Then compare them with tint2 and try to mirror KDE's setup. (If you're a programming lacking experience with X and related nonsense, I'd be more than willing to offer what guidance I have.)
    Also, I developed a panel myself (and got pretty far along) using the PyGTK toolkit... But I can't remember if I solved this problem or not. I'll try to check it out and get back to you. (I got as far as implementing a widget system that includes a task list, system tray, clock, menus... It just isn't polished very well. My original intention was for it to be a more robust PyPanel with dual monitor support.)
