  • New Arch Logo - Kernel Boot

Well I made a Arch Kernel Boot Logo using the new logo (in knoppix as netpbm is broken in arch)
It is kinda fuzzy on the edges, I'll try to see if its possible to fix up hopefully this weekend.
    Get it here: http://mezoko.net/stuff/arch/logo_arch_clut224.ppm
    How to install:
Just download this package (i686), I used the pkgbuild from aur, I just replaced logo_linux_clut224.ppm with mine: http://mezoko.net/stuff/arch/kernel26-2 … pkg.tar.gz
    From source:
    -Way 1-
    1) Run abs
    2) cd /var/abs/base/kernel26
    3) Replace logo_linux_clut224.ppm with logo_arch_clut224.ppm
    4) Run makepkg
    -Way 2-
    1) cd /usr/src/linux/drivers/video/logo/
    2) Replace logo_linux_clut224.ppm with logo_arch_clut224.ppm
    3) Compile kernel as normal
    -Way 3-
    1) More official if you have your own kernel source (adds logo to kernel tree)
    2) Read: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Linux_Logo … o_it_Right
P.S. if someone could fix the netpbm package, as it lacks
    [mezoko@pyther ~]$ pnmtoplainpnm
/usr/bin/pnmtoplainpnm: line 3: pnmtopnm: command not found

It is amazing the effect that you've achieved with arch's logo. I was thinking some days ago if it would be possible to change the unpolished perspective of the official logo at arch's home page.
I wonder if you hadn't proposed this well proportioned, clear, and good angled image as the new official logo.
Arch is one of the best distros so you deserve double grats.
I hope to see more of your artwork soon. I drink to make other people interesting.

Well, I'm in a similiar situation atm. I used cinema4D a few years ago but stopped mainly because of my switch to linux.
I didn't want to use c4d under wine (and was unable to start it with recent wine version anyway..) and was kind of scared by blenders UI.
After reading a few tutorials my fear is gone and I start to enjoy using blender

  • Announcing some new Arch Linux Schwag offerings

    Hey All,
I wanted to introduce you to some new Arch Linux Schwag offerings I've been cooking up over the past little while.
I'm currently sold out of case badges, and Simo has faithfully shipped his last order.  I'm trying to think of a way to compensate him, he's done so much work for me on the shipping front and all I ever offered him was dinner, (granted, he's a starving student, and dinner was hopefully much appreciated).  When I reorder stickers, probably in the new year, I will be shipping them myself, from Canada, so domestic prices will be a touch higher.
    Now, onwards to Schwag:
It's no secret that I'm the odd man out on the tacos vs poutine debate.  I know you all will come around to my way of thinking eventually, but in the meantime, check out the new schwag where you can proudly pick your piece.  I've also added a few other new t-shirt design, mostly as your suggestions.  Check out the new products line at zazzle to place your order:
    http://www.zazzle.com/archlinux/gifts?c … 1284817680
I think most of you know about the laptop bags, jewellery, and case badges (currently out of stock) selling at: http://schwag.archlinux.ca/
I've added a few handmade items of my own invention to the mix, including wooden and soapstone sculptures, keychains, and coasters, all featuring our favourite distro's logo:
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/coaster/
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/soapstone_sculpture/
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/sculpture/
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/keychain/
I'm particularly proud of the soapstone sculptures, they look incredible.  I'm not sure I can give them up.  The keychains will also make great stocking stuffers this Christmas season, so remind your friends to shop Arch Schwag!
In addition, I would like to announce a preview of the Arch Linux Handbook.  This should be retailing in a couple weeks, and will be available from both CreateSpace and Amazon.com.  The handbook is basically a quick restyling of the epic beginner's guide in the wiki.  You can preview it here:
    https://www.createspace.com/3398103
    That's all for now!
    Dusty

Runiq wrote:Cool stuff. Like the coasters, and the allanbrokeit shirt is stylish.
    That's Acecero's contribution, as he implies. :-)
Also, there's a typo in the handbook's headline: "A simple lightweight Linuk handbook."
Yeah, I know... sadly, I didn't notice it until it was too late to change (the book was set up for publication).  Now I have to wait for a new edition, or pay $40 to put one out now.
Acecero wrote:Just curious, are you going to release different editions of the Arch Linux Handbook from time to time? I'm assuming the information would need to be updated and the more marketability you will gain anyway.
I'm hoping to sell between 10 and 50 copies of this edition to pay for the upfront costs before making a new edition.  The more popular it is, the more likely I will be to keep it up to date.
BTW, if anyone is interested in doing cover art for the second edition, get in touch with me.  I've been told that this cover looks like ass (it was gently, with links to tutorials on design :-D)

  • Arch logo wallpapers -- 1920x1080

    Hi,
I'm a new Arch user, and thought I'd share wallpapers I created using Gimp and Arch! The logos featured in these wallpapers are from the archlinux-artwork package in the repos. BTW some of the thumbnails aren't very clear, so you may need to click to see it properly.

    Welcome to Arch!
Thanks for the wallpapers..just nabbed '..arch7..' for myself. I've been looking for something nice and Archey to go along with Awesome WM's 'Strict' theme!
Any who, feel free to ask the mighty Arch community for any and all sorts of help..that is if the answers to you're questions don't already exist in the wiki/forum!

  • How can I get the arch logo in console/terminal during boot?

    Hello
I just installed arch as my first linux, and I would like to get the arch logo in the top left corner during boot, like on the following screenshot:
    http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y132/s … h_boot.png
    uname  -a:
    Linux 3.6.6.1-ARCH #1
    syslinux bootloader
    How can I do that?
    Thanks a lot and greetings

I'm not sure what's the situation now, but you may not get the logo - neither the penguin nor Arch logo:

  • Bug in new Arch 2008.04-RC?

I just burned the new Arch AMD64 2008.04-RC to a CD and gave it a go on my Mac Pro.
It runs and boots!!  Quite an accomplishment since most Linux LiveCD's (including old versions of Arch) do NOT boot properly on my Mac Pro Tower.  It usually hangs with a black screen of death.
But very time I boot off the new AMD 64 2008.04-RC CD, the tray on my second DVD Burner Drive ejects during the udev probing stage.
Are others have this problem?  Is this a bug?
    Rob
P.S.  The only other distro that seems to boot off this mac pro is Ubuntu Gusty and my drives do NOT open on this distro during bootup.

Yes, Pierre Schmitz noted this on mailinglist. File a bug.

  • Replace the arch logo in the framebuffer during boot?

since the tango version of the arch logo http://www.archlinux.org/media/logo.png is also used on the homepage and since it looks better than the currently used (IMHO ), i would like to know how people would think about replacing the current icon during bootup: http://www.archlinux.org/logos/archlinux_logo_aqua.png with the tango version?
i think it would look better.

Yeah, I know and it's what I'm using right now
What I meant was why not using fbsplash/gensplash/splashy with a arch-based theme (from 800x600 till 1900x1200 or similar resolution to satisfy everybody needs) by default? Why only a little logo when you can have better resolution and a nicer without-X look?
Obviously with the beyond and/or the vanilla kernel.
Not everyone wants a graphical bootup. And some cards don't support framebuffer and throw error messages. My card did this until kernel 2.6.18.

  • Gnome panel foot logo--arch logo

it used to be that if you wanted your gnome panel to have the arch logo rather than the foot logo you would replace /opt/gnome/share/piximaps/gnome-logo-icon-transparent.png with the archlogo, this is no longer the case. (as of gnome 2.16 afaik) can anyone help me on this. I am getting a little sick of the foot

  • Xdm-arch-logo theme for xdm

    Hi,
Quick announcement to say I forked the xdm-arch-theme by Xappe & the-isz to create xdm-arch-logo.
The original idea developed in this forum thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69299
I've forked and renamed it because:
        a) The directory structure was too complex (compared with xdm-archlinux - now in community)
        b) Installed directory names did not match the package named leading to (my) confusion
        c) I could never remember which xdm arch theme was the decent one with the official logo
I also added support for systemd service.
    AUR Package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xdm-arch-logo/
    Github: https://github.com/jwm-art-net/xdm-arch-logo/
    Screenshot: https://github.com/jwm-art-net/xdm-arch-logo/wiki
This is the one that should be in community, not that horrible sky blue/cyan one!
    Thanks Xappe & the-isz

I know those themes. but I don't like them. Their style and colors are too similar, and they are often too complicated.
I read about writing your own themes (that's how I did the uzbl one), but it cost me a lot of time, which I would rather not invest now.
And since I will present an Arch related presentation on Archcon, I want an Arch theme

  • New iTunes Logo Is HIDEOUS

I didn't know where else to go to express my very strong disliking of the new iTunes logo. I think it looks incredibly boring and pedestrian, like something I would have made when I used to pretend I was a graphic designer. Gross, Apple. Gross.

    hi,
euhm did you guys know this was the logo of itunes long before iTunes 10.
please all look at your iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. What logo do you see at the icon of itunes.
yes... you do. this is the new iTunes LOGO!
i've never heard anyone complaining about this one did i?
the reason it is blue and not pink as the IOS version is so we (mac OSX users) gan recognize it as iTunes.
And if you look at it closely you can see a light vertex effect but i think it's not as strong as in the IOS so we don't mistake it for the time-machine.
They were right to remove the compact disk because that was dated (with the itunes store).
i think this is a solution made by apple to take the IOS and OSX a bit closer again.
and if you don't like it? why don't you go and use windows media player?
something that scared my much more than the logo was the vertical close, minimize and maximize controls. used to it now do.
