New ATA/IDE Drive - Mac OS X Won't Mount the Drive!

Hello out there!
I have a problem- I installed a new 80GB WD ATA drive to my old PM G3 - everything went in smoothly, hooked it up to the "Ultra ATA" slot on the motherboard, and booted. (It is now the only disk, set to Master - jumpers, not cable select)
The main objective is to get out of OS 8/9 and get into X. I put in the OS X install disc, and get all the way to "Select Destination" - the drive is no where to be seen.
I went into the installer logs, says that the drive didnt mount, and it tried again, then gave up.
I then went into Disk Utility, click on the Disk, saw the Volume didnt mount... Erased the Disk, to Mac OS X E - and it appeared to erase - but - still no mount...
I have erased the Disk too... still no mount, the computer clearly knows the disk is there, but wont mount the volume.
Never had a problem like this before, and you guys are so impressive!
Hope you can help me out!
Thanks!
Chris

Without the 646U2-402 chip on your motherboard, you have the "Heartbreaker" Blue & White G3. When upgraded to a Hard Drive faster than the original 4, 6, or 8 GB drives that shipped with the units originally, they become flaky -- producing crashes, freeze ups, and eventually disk corruption. But never repeatable enough to diagnose a firm problem.
The solution for most users has been to install a PCI Hard drive Controller, IDE or SCSI at your option, and live happily ever after. (Recently, the cheapest Mac-specific IDE Controllers have been new at NewEgg.com. The cheapest bootable SCSI is the used Apple/ATTO UL2D).
"Happily Ever After" that is, until you try to transfer large amounts of data over FireWire. At which point you may be forced to install a controller for FireWire to get satisfaction in using that Bus. Oh, and the Blue & White can not share its drives over FireWire using FireWire Target Disk mode, either.

  • Disabled NTFS-3G External HD now Mac won't recognize the drive

    Hi,
I recently unmounted my WD External HD from the NTFS-3G preference pane, now my Mac is unable to recognize the drive.  When I open Disk Utility the drive is there but i am unable to do anything with it.
How do I re-mount the drive to NTFS-3G and have the Mac read it again.  I tried uninstalling NTFS-3G, reinstalling it.  Removed files from the system folder. Even uninstalled and re-installed MacFuse.
I am stuck as to how to make the make recognize the drive again like before.
    Any suggestions?

make sure you have the exact path written correctly. If you can, show what the filename is in itunes, and the filename when you are looking at the song files (i.e. through my comuter). Make sure these are the same, and that they are all usable itunes formats.

  • I got a new computer and backed up my iTunes library to an external hard drive.  The external hard drive is not allowing me to access the drive.  Is there a way to transfer the songs from my iPod touch to my new computer?

I got a new computer and backed up my iTunes library to an external hard drive.  The external hard drive is not allowing me to access the drive.  I no longer have access to the old computer.  Is there a way to transfer the songs from my iPod touch to my new computer?

That's a bummer, didn't realize the exHD files were corrupt, esp if you have tried from another PC and not just this new computer.
You can get purchases from the itunes store transferred from an iPod using these directions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848?viewlocale=en_US
If you want everything (meaning non-itunes songs, app data, photos, etc) you need to buy a 3rd-party ipod manager that support iTouch. Here is an iLounge article to start your research:

    1. Create a backup of your iPad to iTunes on your computer or to iCloud
    2. Transfer any and all photos & videos on your iPad to your computer.
    3. Erase the iPad and restore the iPhone's iCloud backup to the device.
    4. Transfer any and all photos & videos on your iPad to your computer.

  • Had a problem copying files, now MBP won't mount the external HD`

    Hi
I thought to put this in the MBP forum but since I thik it may be the OS I decided to post here.
I have a newer MBP with OS 10.5, I have an external LaCie c0nnected via eSata to keep my firewire 400 port free. I mounted another external HD to the Firewire port and the computer recognized it and I started copyig some files from the LaCie to the other external. Both formatted HFS+ Files were QT files. Somewhere during the copy process things locked up. I had to force quit the copy process, then coldn't restart the computer so had to ue the boot button to turn it off. Now I can't connect anything to the FW port. The MBP won't mount the 2nd external HD so I can get those files copied. I brought up my FCE and connected the external monitor to the FW port but now that doesn't work either and it was working this morning.
I hope I didn't blow the FW400 port! Is there any way to 'clear it' in case it's still looking for that HD? I don't kow if I'm asking theright way cause I'm really new to MAC's. I tried the Disk Utility to verify the disk and got an OK message. What else can I try?
    Thanks
    Allen

    Hi VK
Well I didn't blow the FW port. My video editing partner came over today to discuss a project we're working on together. He has FC Pro and I have FCE4. So I mentioned the problem to him cause it was his HD that wouldn't mount.
We had FCE open so I was showing him my external monitor fed via the FW port wasn't working either. He went to the View menu then to Video out and then to refresh video devices. BINGO! The external monitor started working. So it wasn't the FW port but apparently the FW was locked up or looking for the other HD. Now it's working. But I haven't tried connecting another external FW HD yet.
    Thanks for your help

My hard drive failed. My applications were on the drive including Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Apple told me I could pull everything from the failed drive. I tried that but the drive is bad so I can't get to anything. The Office package was installed/included when I purchased the Mac. Does anyone think Apple will provide me with the Office package? Thank you!

Thank you everyone. I apologize to confusing all but I am up to date and running OS X 10.8.2.  It's possible I purchased the key for Office but I don't think so although it was 3-4 years ago. I guess I will stop in the Apple Store and just ask. I may just buy the new bundle anyway to get the most updated.
I have read there are issues with the MS Office bundle running on our latest OS, is that true?
Thank you all!!! You've been great!

  • Time Machine won't mount the disc on my Time Capsule

So here's the deal, I've got a Time Capsule which is connected to my Macbook, But everytime I try to back it up, it won't mount the disc. I've tried restarting it (but not resetting). It's not completely dead; it does deliver Internet (quite well actually, as my house router has crapped out twice and my Time Capsule is still pumping out Internet). Any help/advice?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Try the following steps to see if that will get things going.
Open System Preferences and open Sharing. Make sure that your computer name appears correctly.
Open AirPort Utility and click on Manual Setup. Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons. Make sure that your Time Capsule name appears correctly.
Also while in AirPort Utility, click the Disks icon, then click the File Sharing tab just below. Make sure there is a check mark next to "Enable File Sharing"
Click in an open area of your desktop to show the Finder menus at the top of the screen. Click on Finder and then click on Preferences and then the General tab. Under the heading of "show these items on the desktop", make sure there is a check mark next to "Connected Servers"
Power down the Time Capsule and wait a few moments, then power it back up.
Now click System Preferences and Time Machine. Choose Change Disk and click your Time Capsule to highlight it and then click Use For Backups.
If this is your first backup, the process will go much faster and reliably if you attach an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule to your computer. Subsequent backups can be wireless since they will be much smaller.

  • I have a 13in MacBook Pro from mid 2010, the hard drive failed or s i thought, I put a new one in and it didn't work, so I put those 2 hard drives in a friends Mac and they worked just fine. The Mac still turns on but won't discover the drive

The Mac turns on, says it can't see the drive. Any ideas as to what is causing this, I'm thinking its the cable, are these easy to come buy? And would this even be the answer?

Yes it is the Cable. Replace it and you will be Good To Go.

  • Mac mini won't mount hard drive on start up

My mac mini was shut dow for a week while on vacation.  Upon return I tried to start up and hard drive won't mount.  I can hear it make repeated attempts but it won't engage.

Actually I think there may have been a power outage while I was gone, but the computer was shut down.  Could this be a factor?
I do not get any boot choices it just keeps cycling the initial disk start-up prior to the chime.  I'll try starting with the Option or alt key down.

  • New (2 months old) Mac Book has a Warped CD/DVD Drive

I have a new Mac Book (2 months old - not refurbised) that I recently tried to insert a DVD into the drive and it basically fought me and would not allow me to insert a DVD. It did eventually work but it was a pain in the butt and is inconsistant sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.
Upon inspection of the slot in noticed that it looks warped like the outside of the slot bends in the middle in the casing. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the new macbooks? If so did they get it repaired by Mac, at the Genius bar perhaps?
I also have "stains" or marks from my hands on the casing where my hands rest is this normal and if so how do i get them off?
I bought the Apple Care package so I am assuming that it would be covered but in all my years of having an apple I have never had this kind of hardware problem.

    Hi Jagreynolds,
couples user post their problem with this misalign optical drive, and since it is not an user upgradeable part, the only way is to contact apple store and let the genius guy re-align or replace the optical drive.
And for that stains issue, consult to applestore as well, if it is a discoloration issue like previous issue as very early white macbook, maybe you can get the replacement as well.
And yes, both issues are covered by apple warranty.
    Good Luck.

    Hi.
I have currently a Macbook and I am also thinking about going to buy a Macbook Pro, question is can I access my iphoto and itunes libraries from both Mac’s on my single external hard drive without the libraries being affected?

  • New iMac 5K 3TB force closing apps, won't wipe hard drive

This is my first Apple computer purchase. I've been in PC support for many years, and this has stumped myself, two Genius reps, and a Cupertino engineer who just so happened to be at the store I took it into. Keep in mind, I received this computer FIVE days ago.
I unboxed it, set up a user profile and installed some Adobe products and a App Store app called "Timing" to track how much time I spent in each project. Three days later, I had some issues where the RAM (it has 32GB) was being used up completely by Adobe After Effects and Premiere. I was working on a 1920x1080 video for web. Both programs kept freezing and force closing every ten minutes, saying I was using up all of my RAM. I checked the Activity Monitor, sure enough - 11GB of RAM was being used just while idling. AE and Premiere would take it over the top. I deleted the "Timing" app and it seemed to stop doing that. But the thought of running into this problem neck deep in a render terrified me. So I decided to do a clean OS install, just to be safe.
I backed up my work, disconnected my backup drive, booted to the disk utility. When I got into the utility, I attempted to delete the Hard Drive but got the spinning pinwheel of death halfway through. A few hours later I hard rebooted and tried again - same thing. I thought, maybe it erased the hard drive but was just hung up. I advanced to the OS install and left it to download.... something that had to do with the OS. The next morning, I shook the mouse and my user profile login appeared. Exactly nothing had changed, or been deleted. I called Apple support and a very nice lady walked me through a fix (the exact same thing I had already tried, of course). We went through the fix, but this time deleting my iCloud and gmail accounts within the OS and THEN trying to wipe OS, in case it had restored my computer via iCloud after the wipe. Same exact result, error while erasing the HD. I began to suspect a much bigger problem -  a hard ware issue.
I took it into the Genius bar the next day. A tech tried to boot my machine to their network diagnostics drive. The drive wouldn't appear on my iMac as an option. Weird, probably an in-store network issue though. He grabbed another Genius. This guy got the diagnostics to run, but that it stated nothing was wrong with the machine. However, even after booting via a thunderbolt drive, the machine would still not unmount the 3TB fusion HD. He said that there were Cupertino engineers that just happened to be there today, and that he would grab one. While I assumed the Cupertino guys are network engineers, I was like, cool, better than nothing. The Cupertino guy, who also was awesome, came over and attempted to unmount the disk via terminal (keep in mind we were booted via the thunderbolt drive). Nope. No good. They walked away for a second and came back stating they think the hard drive needs to be replaced, my original gut feeling as well. I left the iMac at the store awaiting a replacement HD to see if that will fix the issue.
I'm posting this because after I went home and thought about it more, I thought maybe the best course of action is to return/exchange this for one with a SSD instead of a Fusion drive, but I just found out via my account information that I am not allowed to return this machine. Now I am straight up about to panic. Let me stress that every single person I have worked with has been a complete angel, but I now need the advice of the rest of the internet on this one. Even if they replace the hard drive, is it possible there is a larger issue that could strike later down the road, like a lemon computer? Should I be trying to get a replacement? Has anyone ever had this issue? Thanks for any help whatsoever.

If you purchased it directly from Apple (either their on-line store or a brick and mortar Apple Store) and it's less than 14 days old you can return it for either exchange or to get your money back. If it's older than 14 days old, then sorry it's a no-go.

  • External Firewire drives power up, but won't mount.

I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem. I recently upgraded my mom's laptop to OSX Lion after she experienced a lot of problems with Snow Leopard. All updates available from Software Update have been installed. Now 2 issues have arisen after the new install: 1) the FW 800 and 400 ports appear to be non-functional, and 2) the OS takes about 10 minutes to boot up to the desktop.
    1) Regarding the FW ports: I have a couple external Firewire 800 hard drives that I use on other Macs so I know they're fully operational and mount without any issues. They're both 5400RPM drives that have been inserted into Macally external enclosures, and are of different capacities - one is 320GB and the other is 500GB. The enclosures offer FW 800, 400, USB 2.0 and mini-USB connectivity. But after upgrading the laptop I mentioned, neither of the drives will mount when using the FW 800 or 400 cables. They power up but won't mount, and they don't show up in the list in Disk Utility. However, the drives will power up and mount via USB.
I realize the laptop may have a hardware/port problem - but both 800 and 400 ports? Seems unlikely.
    2) Any idea why it's taking the OS 10 minutes to boot up? I've shut down the laptop and rebooted it twice since the OS install, and both times took 10 minutes.
I may just install Lion on one of the hard drives, pull it and then pop it into the laptop to see if that makes any difference. Before I do that, can anyone recommend a hardware utility that can check the ports?
    I welcome your suggestions.
    Thank you.

Thanks for responding. Here's the info you requested. I'm not a systems guy so hopefully I've pasted in something that helps.
