New Base Airport Extreme 802.11n .....bugs

Well,
I have just read tens of posts in many forums, included this one.
It seems that the Base Airport Extreme 802.11n has severe problems of connections to internet.
That's is also my case.
This is my config.
1. Modem NetGear DM111P <--> WAN Base Airport Extreme 802.11n
2. LAN Base Airport Extreme 802.1n <--> Ethernet iMac 24"
3. LAN iMac as DHCP auto IP
4. Base Airport set for PPPoE
There is no way to get into Internet.
If I connect the Modem DM111P directly to the iMac 24" LAN the Internet is on, fast, fluid.
With the Airport in betwwen....no way...
Any help ?
I am seriously thinking Apple has distributed a product full of bugs.
Read other forums with same problem.

Confirmed: the NetGear <--> AEBS <--> iMac does not work.
I have set the Bridge Mode as you suggest, but nothing, no internet !
Othe 3 hours of tests in setting tens of conigurations. No one works.
All the leds of the NetGear Modem as the one in the AEBS are solid green.
I will return back the NetGear modem to the retailer.
I am now running with my old Pirelli Modem from Alice Service (Telecom Italia Net) that - even if slower - at least it works.
I am concluding that the Airport Extreme has seriuos problems of compatibility with the open market modems.
Apple should check the SW+HW before selling such difficult items as the the Airport Extreme base.
Just a question: which model/type of modem(s) is(are) effectively compatible with the AEBS ?
If the retailer will permit me this, I will replace the NetGear (a very good modem...what a pity) with a compatible one with this strange base.

Is my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) Base Station defective?

I'm trying to set up a wireless network with my new AirPort Extreme (802.11n) Base Station. I dismanteld my existing network that consisted of an old model AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express. I can't seem to get anything to work properly with the new hardware. I have a G4 Quicksilver that uses an AirPort card. Is that the issue? I thought they were compatible. I was not able to update the Setup Utility because I don't have an Intel Mac. Still, that shouldn't prevent me from doing an initial setup. I'm thinking perhaps the unit is defective. I've been working on this several hours a day for almost a week. This is the most trouble (by far) that I've ever had with any Apple product. I'm really disappointed. I suspect the hardware is defective, but based on all of the issues I've read about in this forum, I think it could just be reflective of the poor overall quality of the new AirPort Extreme. What a let down.

What is the exact name of the application you are using to configure the airport?
You should be using "AirPort Utility"
It is a Universal application, so it should work on both a PPC and Intel mac.
As for the update, if you can't download it via software update, you most likely do not need it.
The quicksilver only has an Airport card:

That means that you will need to configure the airport extreme N to operate in the 2.4 GHz range. You will need to tell it that it needs to be compatible with 802.11b
There is probably an option for 802.11 b/g/n compatibility.
Are you going to still use your airport express? you could either use WDS to extend your wireless network without connecting the two airport base stations with an ethernet cable... or you could connect them together with an ethernet cable and configure the same network name and use two different channels (only use 1, 6, or 11). If you extend a network, they both need to use the same channel.
If the quicksilver is the only machine on your network, it will not be any faster.
Actually, you could make things faster, now that I think about it... I am guessing that your quicksilver is not located near your airport extreme. If I am wrong, just ignore this...
You could use one of your airports as your main base station, connected to your cable modem/dsl whatever... then you connect the other airports ethernet to your quicksilver. you then turn off the airport card in your quicksilver and set up the airport connected to your computer to use WDS and connect to the other airport using 802.11g.
You now have gone from an 11 mbps max (5 mbps real world) connection to a real world 30-40 mbps link.
Other options would be to look for 802.11g or 802.11n usb adapters for the quicksilver... I am not sure what is mac compatible out there, since it is probably a small market since it is built in to all new macs.

SERIOUSLY slow USB hard drive on the new Airport Extreme 802.11n

I have recently bought the new airport etreme 802.11n. Great little device, look wonderful on the office desk. I had some troubles getting it up and running on my machine but finaly got there in the end.
The USB hard drive is a great little addition that I was very excited about, untill I got it running. It is amazingly slow, for example I tried to copy a folder that contained 15 files which amounted to 135.6mb and it took 20 mins and 24 seconds to upload!
Is this just the speed that it should be uploading or is there somehting wrong with my settings.
I'm running on 3 bars of signal and the settings I'm using are:
connect with password (which is the same as the base stations password)
Automatically discover disks
Show in menu bar
If anyone knows the technical data for the transfer speeds and can confirm my queries I'd really appreciate it!

You can connect USB-based storage devices to an AirPort Extreme (802.11n). Learn which formats and protocols are supported.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) supports USB storage devices that have a block size of 512 bytes, and are formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS-plus), FAT16, or FAT32. Not all USB storage devices use a block size of 512 bytes.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) shares storage devices based on the format used to initialize the storage device. For example, if HFS-plus formatting was used, AFP and SMB/CIFS protocols are used to share the device on the network. If FAT16 or FAT32 was used, SMB/CIFS protocols are used.
The AirPort Extreme (802.11n) works with disks that have a single partition and are not RAID volumes (no more than one volume per physical disk).
Note: Use AirPort Disk Utility to discover and mount AirPort Extreme-based volumes over the network.

New Airport Extreme (802.11n): : Port Mapping... ***???

There are two different programs I was formerly using, whereby (after following instructions) I was able to create a static IP address for every machine on my network, plus open ports 8000 and 9990-9998 respectively. But ever since upgrading to the new Airport Extreme (802.11n), it completely stopped working. To boot, I've upgraded to Leopard on one of two of the machines (the other is still using 10.3.9).
I haven't been able to figure out for the life of me, how to configure it. It's no longer as obvious where and what information to put in. All guides that would remotely help are designed for the older Airport unit, which has completely different menus in the Airport Utility.
Is there anyone out there who has experience with Dot-Tunes and/or Nicecast or similar port mapping, who has the patience to describe, in layman's terms, what steps to take to get this set up correctly again, starting with how to reassign static IPs for my machines. I will not ask a lot of questions and take up too much more of your time. I'm just frustrated after a whole day of trying to figure this out and fruitless Google and forum searches.

I'm not familiar with either Dot-Tunes or Nicecast, but the following would be the general port mapping procedure with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) using the AirPort Utility. Note in this procedure you will not need to assign a static IP address for each of your host devices. Instead you will be taking advantage of the AEBSn's DHCP reservations feature.
To setup port mapping on an AEBSn, either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.
2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
o Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
o Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>

When I try to print, I get a USB Waiting message on the printer, and when I force a page to print by pressing Go on the printer, I get a page that says ERROR: syntaxerror OFFENDING COMMAND: true. . . .cvt . . . fpgm . . . x . . .lglyf . . . <..J head . . . STACK: / [ -mark- /sfnts I’ve tried shutting down the printer and disconnecting it and the Airport, but that doesn’t help. I reset the settings on the printer. I upgraded the Airport firmware and removed, reinstalled, and upgraded the Lexmark printer driver. After I upgraded the firmware and printer driver, a few pages printed correctly, but then I got the same syntax error page as before. Any suggestions for getting the printer to work correctly?

Use a powered USB hub between the AE and the printer.. the usb port does sometimes have issues.
Try deleting the printer in the Mac and reinstall it.. the change in AE can represent effectively a change of printer.. it is important to make sure that is all up to date.
Beyond that.. USB printers.. ughhh! Consider for two toners you can go and buy a proper network printer.

Currently the Airport Utility does not appear to be on the downloads page, you can call Apple support line to receive a replacement disk, but be aware there may be a charge for replacement CDs.

No Green Light with new AirPort Extreme 802.11n

Bought new AirPort Extreme 802.11n today. DSL works fine with LINKSYS router but only get blinking Amber light with new APE. I am using 10.3.9 so can not use Utility CD as it requires 10.4. Do I have to upgrade system to 10.4 to get APE to work.

Thanks for help. I upgraded to OS X as you all suggested and was able to use AirPort Extreme utility to access web and get the green light. I had to determine how I was connected to internet by DSL provider (PPOE) and needed to insert my mail ID (e-mail address) and my mail password. I was able to verify the PPOE connection by imputting the IP address of the Linksys connection on my browser and going to their web page.
It took me a while but Apple support was available as it was a new purchase and they talked me thru.

Trouble installing new AirPort Extreme (802.11n)

I just purchased the AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station. When I first turned on the AirPort Extreme base station the AirPort Utility program on my Mac recognized it immediately. I followed the instructions to configure it and everything seemed to be OK (green light is glowing on the base station). That said, now my Mac (AirPort Utility) no longer recognizes the base station. Any ideas what could be causing this problem or where I can go for help?

Did this problem with Airport Utility not "seeing" your base station happen immediately after configuring the device? Or has everything been working fine for days or months, and you noticed just now that the Airport Utility cannot see the base station.
Also - are you absolutely certain your Mac is wirelessly connected to your base station, and not the unsecured wireless network of one of your neighbors?

Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station blocking RealPlayer 11 completely

I am trying to play this radio station (just a brasillian sports channel) on RealPlayer 11:

Which is completely blocked on my Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station with the latest firmware update.
It even blocks when RealPlayer is configured for HTTP only.
I am using it on my iMac which is connected directly via a ethernet cable instead of wifi to the Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station.
RealPlayer can play it fine when I plug my iMac directly to the cable modem so it proves is the router. I never had RealPlayer issues before when I was using a linksys router.
It does really feel like Apple put an intentional block on RealPlayer to stop competition.
Anyone seen this issue? Guess it is related with the BBC RealPlayer issue.

Fixed myself, problem was because I setup OpenDNS on base station, removed it now works

Timed Access not working on new Airport Extreme (802.11n).

I bought a new Airport Extreme (802.11n) to use as a router for my network. The network has a mixture of Macs and PCs, using a mixture of wired and wireless connections.
I configured the security settings with on the Airport Extreme to Timed Access. I set the default setting is to No Access.
Three computers are set with "Everyday, Between 8:00am and 11:00pm"; however, when it's 11:00pm, nothing happens. The three computers continue to have access.
I know the MAC addresses I entered are correct. Does anyone know why the Timed Access is not working?

Yes, the printer was initially set the same way it always was on my old router. It used to pop right up on the list. After I switched I was getting communication errors. Ok, new setup, I wasn't worried yet. When I got to the setup window and it a new printer wasn't found I tried updating drivers. No luck. I then used the IPP mode to enter the IP address with the address on the Canon screen. It failed. I then did the same setup telling it which software from the driver list to use. It still could not see it. The odd part is that the Canon can obviously see the router as its LAN setting read active and it is receiving the IP. I have proceeded to play with every setting on the printer and it is back to factory reset. Oh, I should mention that I have also tried to use Canons network setup utility software and it can not find the connection either. So I really think this is a problem within the router. I have seen many complaints about this on other forums, but most were looking to use the usb on the print server. My Airport is nowhere near my printer and I don't want to lose my all-in-one functions. Some think hard lined ethernet is ancient, but it really is a nice setup. Fast and reliable.

Any solutions? I just got my 5th generation Airport Extreme, set it up on my MacBook (OS X.5.8), and my PPC iMac (OSX.4.9) is having Kernal panic attacks whenever I try & join the new network. I;m now back on my old Airport settings and it doesn;t crash. Clearly it's the new Airport.

I travel a lot and need to use the AirPort Extreme both in the US and Europe. Can anyone who has it already tell me if it says on the bottom of the power adapter 100-240V, 50-60Hz before I buy one? It is not specified anywhere else on-line.

Connecting AirPort Express to AirPort Extreme 802.11n

The following steps helped me set up an AirPort Express base station connected to a set of wireless speakers with my new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station. I’m posting this because the process was not entirely intuitive, at least not to me.
I’ll assume you have set up the AP Extreme base station to connect to the internet and run your home network and that you are connected to your wireless network.
Make sure you set-up the AP Extreme base station to broadcast in 802.11n + 802.11b/g modes, i.e. both at once. You will also have to check he setting that allows the newtork to be extended.
Reset the AP Express base station so that in runs on the factory defaults by pressing the reset button with a paper clip. Wait for it to completely restart.
Launch the AirPort Utility. You should see both your AP Extreme and AP Express base stations in the left hand column. Click on the AP Express base station you just reset. When it asks to switch wireless networks do so. Then hit continue.
On the next screen select “Connect to my current wireless network” option and hit continue.
On the following screen select the “Extend the range of my AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express network” and hit continue. Do NOT select the “Join my wireless network” option even though it says this is how you connect to wireless speakers. This is the part that was not obvious to me. When I tried this the AirPort Express base station flashed orange and wouldn’t connect despite waiting 30 minutes.
Chose the network you wish to extend from the drop down menu. My keychain supplied the password for the network.
Give your base station a name and hit continue.
Select the main base station in the list provided. This is the one connected to the internet and hit ok.
The Airport Utility software will configure the network to accept the AirPort Express base station.
Now all that’s left is to connect your wireless speakers to the AirPort Exppress base station. You can now play music through AirTunes while being connected to your fast 802.11n network.

I recently setup an Airport Express in conjuction with my Extreme Base Station. I'm not really understanding how this method enables 802.11n connection speeds (via Base Station) to the internet and also allow streaming music through the Express at 802.11b/g. It's my understanding that if you want to be able to access the internet AND stream music at the same time the Express needs to join the network. In order for the Express to join the network (able to recognize the Base Station)...the Base station needs to be changed from 802.11n only to 802.11n (802.11b/g compatable)....which essentially means your connecting to the internet at 802.11b/g. If your wanting to keep 802.11n only on the base station...you would have to create a seperate network via the Express to stream music. What this means is you CANNOT access the internet and stream music at the same time. You would have to manually change Airport in the taskbar to do one or the other.
Am I off base here? If I am missing something please let me know...because it would be great to be able to connect to the internet at 802.11n only with a multi-case rate set to 23Mbps vs. the 11Mbps (maximum) of the 802.11b/g compatable option.
I guess what is confusing me is that my setup is basically the same as what was described above..minus having the "Extended Network" being enabled. How does extending the network change things?

To extend AirPort Extreme 802.11n

Wanting to extend the range of my AirPort Extreme 802.11n (version 7.4.2)
I have a Airport Express as trial also a 802.11n. AirPort Utility has a lot of trouble finding the Express. When AirPort Utility does find it and I want to set up the Express I have to switch from the Extreme to the Express. Unfortunate side-effect is that AirPort Utility then looses track of the Extreme and I can't "join" the Express as Utility can't find anything to join.
As I have the Express on trial of a friend I did the normal reset (button for 10 sec) and even the factory reset (unplug, press reset button while plugging in) however I did notice it still had his settings. Changed those but as I said before it seems for AirPort Utility is is either or instead of both.

Based on your description, it sounds like the AXn is configured to join the wireless network created by the AEBSn ... not extend it.
The following would be the basic setup steps for extending a wireless network:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

USB Printing AirPort Extreme 802.11n

I've upgraded to the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station and am having troubles printing to printers that worked fine with my previous AirPort Extreme 802.11g base station.
Both USB printers are detectable for set-up in the Print & Fax Preference tab and can be printed to when hooked directly to my computer. They are also detectable for set-up in the Print & Fax Preference tab when hooked via the base station.
So, all set-up and settings are fine. The issue I am having which never occurred before is that the file is sent to the queue but is immediately labeled as stopped and will not print no matter what I try.
I've configured, reconfigured, reset,you name it but with no luck.
does anyone have any answers out there. Please help...

I have had the same issue repeatedly after upgrading to Leopard. I can no longer use my printer (Brother HL-2070N the "network ready one") with my airport extreme router. It used to show up before I updated to 10.5.2, now I can't even get it to show up at all. I reset the base station, unplugged, and then re-plugged in the printer, nothing worked. Then I tried to just delete it from my list of printers and re-add it, but now my computer can't find it! I didn't change anything on my network at all, and I had literally printed something just 10 minutes before I applied the update. Very frustrating for a $180 router.
