New battery culprit for noise or coincidence?

Hi all,
I just bought an extra battery for my PB 1.67 (non dual layer) and I'm in the process of charging it. It is currently at 31%. However, I do notice a "shhhhhhhhoooo" sound, similar to what a sound TV makes when there's no broadcast (and displays the snow on the tube.) Is this the fan running? I hear it approximately from the center of the console. I did not notice this before and I'm almost 99% sure this did not happen when I had my original battery in there. I suppose I can live with the noise but just want to check if this is unusual and whether that extra new battery I got is the culprit. Thanks!

Hi SU,
Thanks for the widget istatpro; looks awesome, although I don't pretend what all the data means exactly. The noise most likely is coming from the fans. Yes, after the new battery was fully charged, it still was making that "woosh" sound but dramatically less; like 50% reduction. When it was at this lower sound level, istatpro showed the rpm on both fans hovering around 7-800. As I have inserted another new battery to charge, the familiar "woosh" sound at the higher level I had complained earlier has come back. Istatpro has confirmed that the RPM has shot up to 9-1000 range. Analyzing the situation, it seems to me that initially charging a new battery seems to instigate these higher fan speeds. It seems to go back down after the battery has fully charged. Hopefully, this is a temporary thing. Thanks.

I am currently in the US, but an alternati've store in Europe could work as well.

  • New battery good for only 4 hours

I have just installed a new battery in my iBook G4. It shows a charge of 4 hours.
    Is this normal?
    Charles

    Hi Charles,
Yes, four hours could be normal. You'll get more out of the battery by lowering the display's brightness to half, setting the processor to either automatic or reduced, turning off AirPort and not using the disc drive. Do all of those things and you'll get closer to Apple's claim of 6 hours (pretty much wishful thinking).
Also, follow Duane's advice and calibrate your new battery.

  • Suggestions for new battery replacement for 1st gen Ipod?

    Hello all,
I recently acquired my brother's 1st gen Ipod mini. I love the thing. As with others, I think I'm having troubles with battery life. I have played songs on it for around 2 hours today. At 1.5 hours of playtime, the battery life indicator was nearly empty (NOTE: I have read this article: http://www.vsa.cape.com/~danh/ipod.htm and I understand the "lying" battery life indicator). A half hour after this, the unit shut itself off: the battery's charge had been depleted.
I have been looking at ebay and there is one company selling a battery for under 10 dollars with shipping. They seem to be fairly reputable, claiming to be a top supplier of Ipod products and that the batteries it sells are superior to the ones that originally came with the 1st gen mini Ipods. They claim the batteries they are selling are " Internal Li-Polymer Apple Mini iPod Battery
    - 600 mAh (High Capacity)
    - 3.7 V "
I have ALSO seen a replacement battery for the Ipod mini claiming the following:
    " Voltage: 3.7V 550mAh "
    Yet another claims:
...our battery which is made and tested to the highest international standard gives you a capacity of 650 mAh which is 50% more than the original Apple battery. The original Apple iPod part number is EC003. This is a brand new high-quality generic (non-OEM) battery."
My question is has anyone replaced the battery on their 1st gen mini Ipod? What voltage and mAh readings should I get for the battery I buy?
    -Phillip

Anyone correct me if i'm wrong here but AFAIK:
Ok, the main thing to look for is the 3.7v rating. the mAh refers to milli-Amp hours, i.e. the amount of charge the battery can hold, not the current it outputs.
As long as it's 3.7v, it's cool. And the bigger the mAh, the better.
    Good luck in your replacement.

Shuffle is about 2+ yrs old. Won't hold a charge. Can the battery be replaced? We've done all steps, i.e., updated sw, reset, etc., but still unable to play. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • How would I know if I need a new battery? (for iphone 4)

My iphone 4 won't turn on. I tried two different sync cords. Plugged it into a wall outlet, PC, and a laptop... it does no good. It charged fine up until now. Even used terminal cleaner. I dropped it in a toilet about 4 months ago. I soaked it in rice for 2 days and since then I've used it daily without a problem. I often leave it plugged in all night though. Is it the battery?

Hard to diagnose in a Forum... Take it in to Apple and have it checked.

  • HT6154 New Battery replaced for iphone4, got a diagnostic and its NOT the battery it drains horrible by itself, i barely use my phone. HELP im about to erase everything to figure out the prob!

Drains really bad, i've tried everything like deleting apps, turning off stuff, turning off notifications, downloaded the app battery monitor etc nothing is working.

Unless Apple replaced your battery, and it appears they didn't, you're pretty much on your own now. Have you tried going back to whoever replaced your battery? That's gonna be your only choice now, because if a third-party replaced your battery, Apple won't touch your phone now.

  • My Macbook (2006) with a new battery empties its battery overnight in sleep mode, why?

It's now been six months that I can't use sleep mode if my macbook is unplugged because the battery gets empty overnight. I had to replace my battery three months ago and I thought this would solve my problem. But, although my new battery lasts for over 4 hours, it is completely empty after a night in sleep mode. I checked the Internet but I found nothing. I've tried to reset the energy management system, but it did not good.
The mac really goes into sleep mode (I can see the brightness of the white light change when the lid is closed).
My macbook has a dual boot Mac os Lion and Windows 7 with bootcamp and the problem is the same whether sleeping under Mac OS or under Windows 7.
I tried turning bluetooth and wifi off, but it doesn't change anything.
    I hope someone can help.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you for your answer,
I tried to log out and put the computer to sleep, but I still lost 40% of the battery in 10 hours (I reckon it is a little less than when I'm not logged out).
I reset the SMC again, no result either.
The computer does look like it is sleeping, the display is off, the light is changing and if I touch a key of the keyboard, it turn itself back with the sound of the CD check.
Does my answer help the diagnosis?
Would reinstall the whole computer solve my problem?
    Thanks!

I emailed creative support team and asked if I could have a new battery cover for my zen nano plus, someone emailed back and said to <EM>''purchase'' </EM>one you have to call them and talk to someone about it. I cant believe I have to actually "PURCHASE" one?

At least you got email back. I emailed them about wanting to buy a replacement cover for my GB MuVo TX weeks ago, and got no reply at all. Do they just ignore you if the unit is out of the warranty period? I'd happily pay a reasonable price for a replacement.

  • I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?

I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?  Will the new one become less effective if it sits around too long?

How much capacity is remaining on your current battery?
    Check your power status
From the  menu: Hold OPTION and click System Information... èHardware è Power
Copy and Paste in your reply.
The new battery will become less effective if you store it in a hot or humid environment. It should be stored at room temperature (22 C).
    Long term storage (6 months):
Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life.

  • A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.

A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.
    This is from Apple.
2 to 3 hours seems very low.
what is teh standard or advertised spec for a 15 inch Macbook Pro with this battery.
I would like to know so that i can return it if this is not normal.
Its expensive so comments would be appreciated.

I say it depends on your model? average usage is about 3-4 hours depending on what you use and how you use it. Adobe Flash player eats a lot of battery power so if you are on a web page and has flash player, likely that it's eating up battery because of it's power thirsty.
Also check your systems activity monitor. It could be possible that one of your program/apps did not close right and may be still running. So check for that and end the process if necessary.
If you have a backlight keyboard, in a broad daylight, it's not necessary to have it on.
I also suggest that you use it plugged in most of the time, and it's not going to hurt or damage the battery if you have it plugged in all the time. Only use on battery if you are going to places that has no access to the outlet. If you are at home, then keep it plugged in. Just keep in mind to fully drain the battery until it your MBP turns off on it's own. This is the calibration process so that you have the most accurate battery readings.
The standard for 2011 MBP is 7 hours on battery. Before that model is 10 hours, but i don't believe that previous models will last 10 hours. Last week I calibrated my battery readings from fully charged and it took 9 hours to completely drain out the battery (I have a 2011 model),
If you think it's not normal and that your battery doesn't meet your expectation then set up an appointment with the genius bar and have them test the battery. They will determine whether it is faulty or not.

  • How can i buy new battery for my macBook pro in France

    Hello,
Please, someone can tell me how to find and buy new battery for my 2008 macBook pro in France ?
This one is very old, i already changed this battery one time, i think Apple store of town won't be ok to make the work cause i have made it myself one time before (it has fallen several times, almost broken, means impossible to shut the battery place but still working on). So i bought a battery to a third provider, wich doesn't work of course, try to ask to online assistance but i have to pay 30 € just to ask my question and i doesn't want...
SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION TO CHANGE MY BATTERY ??? HELP !!!
I bought it in 2008. I don't know exactly the serie. Just know it's a 2,4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo.
The reference of battery is A1281 10,8V 50 Wh. Can't find it on the store. The only one i found was on a website who didn't tell it's was a fake...
    Lost 85 €

Here are the International Apple support telephone numbers:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/he57
I note Egypt is not listed.
Purchasing a battery from a third party vendor is a high risk proposition.  Many such batteries have been found to be substandard.
I suggest that you try and contact Apple and see if you can have one shipped to you.
    Ciao.

  • I live in Ireland. How can I buy a new battery for my N500?

I need to buy a new battery for my Lenovo 3000 N500.   However, in the Ireland section of the Lenovo web site NONE of the dealers have this part in stock.   It is in stock on the US and UK sections of the web site, but apparently only people in those countries can buy it on line.   I would be prepared to buy it online from the US or the UK and pay the shipping charges to Ireland.  In more than 13 years on the web, Lenovo is the first company I've encountered where I haven't been able to use my credit card to purchase an item from the US or the UK.   I do this all the time with companies like Land's End, Amazon, James Meade etc etc.
Fine, if I'm not allowed buy from the US and the UK.  But at least, then, make sure I have some other way of buying the part - either on line or from a store.

    According to Apple:
    iPod Owners
Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery replacement for $49 (iPod shuffle), $59 (iPod nano and iPod classic), and $79 (iPod touch) plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax. Apple disposes of your battery in an environmentally friendly manner.
