New battery, same short life

After fooling with ever shorter periods when the battery of my 6th Gen Nano would hold a charge—often dropping 90% overnight—I sent it to DigiExpress whose technician replaced the battery. Although the battery life if is better, it still loses 25% of the charge overnight. I have done everything suggested in the tips for prolonging battery life.
Would doing a RESTORE help? I understand it will erase everything on the Nano, but can I then sync it to the Library to get it all back?

  • Battery suddenly fails, new battery sees similar problem

A few weeks ago, my battery randomly dies. Went from getting a 4 hour charge to none, it would shut off as soon as I unplugged it. HP Support Assistant said I needed a new battery, with the error code of REEOW. So I purchased a brand new one, and it seemed to fix the problem. However, I started to realize it was only partially fixed...now, my laptop suddenly dies after short use. It will say 55% remaining battery left, according to the indicator, before just randomly dying. Plugging it back in, it suddenly says 0% remaining. Now, HP Support Assistant says once again I need a new battery, same error code of REEOW. I've only had this battery for two weeks. What the heck is going on?

    Anybody?

  • New battery, battery life really short

I've been looking into articles already on the community forum, but couldn't find a clear answer.
Since a couple of months I have a new battery, the old one broke down. But the new one already doesn't have long when it is off power.
When I charge it, it needs a few hours to charge, and when it's full and I disconnect the power adapter my battery lasts for just 3 hours.
I seriously don't think that is normal for a new battery, and deffinetely not in such a short time (a couple of months, I think 10 or 12).
Is there any way anyone knows how this is possible? I just checked my new battery and it said 10.8V -- 45Wh. My old one (I just checked) had the same info.
    The power adapter I have is 60W: output + 16,5V -- 3.65A, input AC 1.5A 100-240V 50/60Hz.
Is the problem within the difference of Watt with the battery and adapter? Because when I got the new battery they didn't advice me (or tell) to check that
and maybe get a new adapter that fits the battery information.
My Macbook is old, a late 2008 version, so I can change the battery myself. And I would love to give it a few more years, but it just not that great when your
battery dies out so soon. It costs a lot of money to keep buying new ones.
It's a great computer, and someday I want to buy a brand new one, but for now this one is still working great.
So please tell me, is there anything I'm doing wrong? If I can get som info on how to change my battery life, that would be great.
I already know that it is better for the battery to keep it charged until it is full and dan disconnect the adapter and use the Macbook until tha battery is low,
and than connect it to the adapter again. That's what I know is best, but on the community forum I've read that for some batteries it is better to keep them
connected all the time. So what to do with my battery?
    Thanks in advance!

The 3 hour time that I can use the battery fully charged, is only if I don't use my computer. If I use it, depends on which programs I use, the time gets shorter. This makes sense, but it is kind of frustrating that a battery dies out so soon even if you use your computer a lot. It would be easier if they were made to last longer in that kind of circumstance.
Yes I do use my computer a lot, listening music, watch a movie, and because for most of my work I need it and use programs like Photoshop, GoLive, Word, etc. Not all day of course, but these are things I think are normal to use. If you run these programs all day, of even use more programs at the same time, yes then I think your battery can die out sooner. But I use them at a regular basis, for my own private things.
Yes, sometimes I play a game, but nothing 'heavy' or that takes a lot of power.
Is it possible that because of the age of my Macbook it is beginning a little bit to much to handle for the Mac, and also the battery? Or doesn't that matter?
I'll calibrate the battery, and check if there is any difference.
Is there a way for my adapter to use it more efficiancy? Should I leave it connected while charged, or deconnect it and use my Mac until it needs to be charged again? What's better for the battery?

  • Old and new battery both ~2 hour life, recently very loud fan

    1)
My macbook pro, which was purchased April 2006, had suddenly dropped its battery life from about ~4 hours to ~2 in January. I noticed this because I traveled back home by plane with a 4 hour battery life for winter, and within weeks the life had dropped to ~2.
I already reset the system (i.e., remove battery, hold down start for 5 seconds, etc) with no avail. This was with the old battery. The apple store tried the same thing, was stumped, and decided to just give me a new battery.
The older battery was the replacement for the 'dud' my macbook pro was originally given. This new battery should be perfectly fine, but the battery life is still ~2 hours. I tried the system reset with this battery--which didn't work. I have also reduced the battery life to just about zero then charged it again--which didn't work.
Could there possibly be something wrong with the hardware? What can I do to fix it, what is the best course of action to fix this one problem?
    2)
Just a few days ago a fan in the top left corner has begun to behave strangely. It has become very loud and seemingly inconsistent even with low CPU usage. By inconsistent I mean it sounds as if it has become loose or it won't maintain a constant speed. The best description for the sound would be 'boiling water.' What could be the cause for this and how can I go about fixing this problem?
    Any input is greatly appreciated!

Have you checked your battery's serial number against the MBP battery exchange program? I did this out of curiousity with mine and it turned that mine was one of the faulty ones! So Apple sent me a new one and I sent the duff one back. It was still fairly new at the time so it still held a good charge.
    2)
I had the fan thing but mine was on the right hand side. Your BEST bet...(what I did) open up quicktime and RECORD the noise several times at different operating conditions and save the files.
send your machine to a service centre and ask for an email address to send the files to so the technician can hear what you hear. I recorded it behaving normally as well so they could hear the difference.
The 1st time mine went in it behaved itself for them so they had to give it back to me, that's when I recorded the noises! I emailed the files before I sent my MBP back again, they took one listen and said they'd order the fans, BEFORE I sent it in. They called me to say that the fans were in so in it went for the replacement.
Hope it helps - mine sounded like it was going to explode and rip apart the inside! I can email you the files if you like?

The reapair shop is probably responsible. And now that you took it to a third party and not to apple store, Apple will not touch your phone at all. So you will probaly have to buy a new one or go back to the reapir shop and hope they can fix it.

A1281 is the battery i got for my 15inch MBP. Is the battery life only 2 - 3 hours for a new battery on this device.
    This is from Apple.
2 to 3 hours seems very low.
what is teh standard or advertised spec for a 15 inch Macbook Pro with this battery.
I would like to know so that i can return it if this is not normal.
Its expensive so comments would be appreciated.

I say it depends on your model? average usage is about 3-4 hours depending on what you use and how you use it. Adobe Flash player eats a lot of battery power so if you are on a web page and has flash player, likely that it's eating up battery because of it's power thirsty.
Also check your systems activity monitor. It could be possible that one of your program/apps did not close right and may be still running. So check for that and end the process if necessary.
If you have a backlight keyboard, in a broad daylight, it's not necessary to have it on.
I also suggest that you use it plugged in most of the time, and it's not going to hurt or damage the battery if you have it plugged in all the time. Only use on battery if you are going to places that has no access to the outlet. If you are at home, then keep it plugged in. Just keep in mind to fully drain the battery until it your MBP turns off on it's own. This is the calibration process so that you have the most accurate battery readings.
The standard for 2011 MBP is 7 hours on battery. Before that model is 10 hours, but i don't believe that previous models will last 10 hours. Last week I calibrated my battery readings from fully charged and it took 9 hours to completely drain out the battery (I have a 2011 model),
If you think it's not normal and that your battery doesn't meet your expectation then set up an appointment with the genius bar and have them test the battery. They will determine whether it is faulty or not.

  • Battery - Short life

My Battery was replaced and is about 18 months old. It would hold a charge for about 2 hrs. All of a sudden it is 20 minutes. I have done a calibration, I have reset the management system. No effect.
The cycle count is 47, charge cap 1116
Is this a normal life??? My understanding was the batt should be good for 300 cycles ????
    Thanks for any imput......
    Dave

No, it's not normal. 'Normal' is 300 cycles or more. I was suggesting you make a Genius Bar appointment, rather then simply buying a new battery. Bring the MBP in, and they'll run a diagnostic on the battery - if it shows defective, they will likely replace it for free. But, it's up to them, really.

  • Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.

Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.  Any suggestions?

    As in, shortly after install?
Note after you install Mountain Lion it's likely that the Spotlight index will be rebuilt.  This will take some time and the machine will run hot.  After this completes, which could take 1-2 hours, things should return more to normal.
If they don't, I suggest running Activity Monitor and seeing if you can trace what is eating up CPU cycles.

  • Older macbook, new battery, short charge

I have an older macbook (Model: MacBook 4,1... search this to get the full specs). I replaced the battery after a year or two and it held NO charge any longer and the computer had to be plugged in to work. Now, with a new battery, it claims to be fully charged (much too quickly might I add),and then the battery only lasts about 30min. until it dies. I have done all updates recently and the battery was replaced by a certified tech. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.8. Im out of Ideas, any suggestions?

  • New battery won't hold charge after short usage

     Hello everyone
I recently purchased a used HP nc6230 computer without a hard drive or battery. After putting a new battery and a hard drive into it I charged the battery installed the OS, windows XP pro, and used the system a few days and it worked fine. I followed the guidelines of the battery manufacturer to burn in or sync the battery pack without incident. Now a week later I turned the system on and it loaded windows, stayed on for about 2 minutes and then shut off. I hooked the charger to the system to charge the battery and the indicator light did not come on to show the battery was charging. I left it connected for about 20 minutes and tried to turn it on again with no success. Could this just be a defective battery or is there a problem withe this particular model computer? Any ideas? Thanks.

You just have an older battery that has limited runtime. Losing 32% in 30 minutes indicates you might get maybe 1:20 runtime which is about normal for a 2 or 3 year old battery. I suspect what happened before is that the battery completely discharged which is not really good for it and sometimes causes the whole system to lock up. If it ever happens again, remove the battery and do the hard reset before plugging in the AC adapter. I suspect you just need a new battery. Where did you get this battery? It may be "new" in the sense that it was never previously installed in a laptop but batteries for that laptop might be as much as 4-5 years old and they do lose power and capability just sitting on a shelf.

  • Battery life is only 2 hours. Which new battery?

    Hi,
I nearly have about 500 cycles with my macbook so i probably need a new battery. When I would buy one in an Apple store, can i buy one which also goes in the new macbook (pro) so I could also reach battery times of 5 hours+? Or do i need a specific battery for my 'older' macbook?
    Thx

Hi ricaaaaar: Yes, at 500 cyscles there is a very strong possibility that the battery is done. Yes, you do need the "older" style battery. The new style will not fit in your computer.

  • Purchasing New Battery

Hi. I have a MacBook (black) and it was purchased in 2007 and the battery life is getting a bit short. It says it is in good condition and I have calibrated it a couple times before but I am interested in purchasing a new one before heading off for college. I was looking around the internet and found batteries on the Apple site and others on Amazon and so forth. I have come across the strait forward batteries and the (Super-Capacity Li-ion Battery For Apple A1185 MacBook Pro 13" Series MA254B/A MB062X/A) batteries for a lot less. What is the difference in the standard battery from the Super-Capacity one and which is the smarter buy. I am on a budget restraint so price is super key but im not interested in throwing away my money either. Please help!!!!!! College starts in 10 days:(

I've been searching for input on the same question about high capacity batteries (i.e., anecdotal data from other users). No solid data yet, so here's my thinking at this juncture:
I'm not a battery expert, but I have studied the issues and listened to electrical engineering battery experts at work. In summary, specification claims are based upon manufacturer tests and theoretical assumptions - unfortunately, don't believe everything you read. Here's why:
The performance of a battery is based upon these factors to name a few:
Design specifications, materials quality, conditions during manufacturing, battery age, and care from time of manufacturing through delivery (exposure to temp and humidity extremes).
Unfortunately, we're all subject to time and chance when we purchase a new battery because there is not a comprehensive database documenting the performance MacBook batteries by manufacturer/model/lot number. I can't even find data regarding particular manufactures ... where's Duracell when you need them!
It appears to me that user battery care has more impact (statistically, not anecdotally) on battery performance and life than the initial ratings. I've read about some people who are getting over 95% charges after 2 years and 300 cycles. Apparently, they routinely run the battery down until their computer shuts down and then fully recharge the battery. While hysteresis may not the factor, I wonder if fully cycling the battery's charge keeps the cells in a relative state of balance (important to prolonging battery life: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ionpolymerbattery).

I ordered a battery for my laptop because it said to replace battery soon.  How long can I let the new battery sit around as I wait for the old one to run out of more charge?  Will the new one become less effective if it sits around too long?

How much capacity is remaining on your current battery?
    Check your power status
From the  menu: Hold OPTION and click System Information... èHardware è Power
Copy and Paste in your reply.
The new battery will become less effective if you store it in a hot or humid environment. It should be stored at room temperature (22 C).
    Long term storage (6 months):
Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life.

  • New battery lasts 1.5 hours...

I recently noticed the battery in my 7 month old MBP was not holding a charge for much more than an hour and a half. I took the machine into the Apple store where a Genius said he could find nothing wrong with the battery. He asked me to diminish the brightness of the screen, be mindful of running too many applications at one time and use wi-fi only when necessary. And he told me that the advertised 'up to five hours wireless productivity' for my machine was a 'perfect world' scenario, unlikely to be repeated in the real world. He said I should probably expect 2-3 hours of battery life on a full charge.
Within a few days I was back in the store complaining that after making those adjustments I was still getting the same battery performance...about an hour and a half of wireless internet off a fully charged battery. The same genius I saw previously handed me a new battery and said my problem should be resolved with the new battery.
I went home, calibrated the battery and charged it overnight. The next morning, I disconnected the power adaptor and the computer said the battery was fully charged and had an hour and a half of life...or almost 2 hours when I turned off the wi-fi. And that seems to be about what I am getting...an hour and a half of wireless internet or two hours of word processing. I think that seems really paltry and seem to remember getting about 3.5 hours of time playing a DVD when I first bought the machine.
Can anyone confirm for me whether or not I should be getting more than 1.5 hours of wireless internet or 2 hours of word processing (with wireless turned off)?
    Thanks!
Here are the specs for the battery I am using now:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 5262
    Fully charged: Yes
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5519
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 3
    Condition: Good
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -3094
    Voltage (mV): 12009

Yes, you should be getting more battery life than that.
Check Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, set the popup to Show: Active Processes and click on CPU to sort. My guess is that there's a background process that's using a fair amount of CPU capacity, which definitely causes the battery to run down faster.
Failed print jobs, certain widgets, etc., are common culprits. If you find something, you can kill it with the Stop button.
    Hope this helps...
