Anyone noticed a slight slowdown of the processor? I'll have to get back home to doublecheck all BIOS settings, but checking this with Sandra (which has been accurate so far for CPU speed testing) BIOS 1.0 and 1.1 showed identical speeds...BIOS 1.2 is 10% slower.
let us know what you find out....curious myself because i already checked bios and nothing changed after update

  • BIOS for K8N Neo2 Platinum

    Hi to all.
Just wanted to know what's the best and most stable bios for my K8N Neo2 Platinum. I'm currently running ver. 1.B, but I've read that ver. 1.9 is the best. Just wanted to know everyone's thought on this one.
In case ver. 1.8 is better,
¿can I flash my bios to ver. 1.9 from 1.B without having any problems?
¿Is ver. 1.9 better for overclocking?
    Thanks.

I agreed with you Stu as I'm also using Syar's Bios 1C.

    My issues are:
Improve compatilbility problem with some USB 2.0 devices
    BIOS reported incorrect CPU temperature.
If you have the d-bracket installed, it may help to completely disconnect it. Sometimes it will cause inaccurate temp readings. You can always plug it back in if you need it for troubleshooting.
I unhooked mine & my reported CPU temps dropped by 8C...

  • New Bios for K8N Neo 2?

I belong to the overlockers.com forum. People over there are dropping MSI's left and right because of stability issues and overclocking problems. This is not to mention the quirky temp readings and vcore settings. It seems that some of these issues could be addressed by a new bios. These same issues have been fixed by Epox with their bios updates. When is MSI going to get this done? I suggest it should be soov or the reputation of this board and MSI are going to ake a beating.

  • Possible to flash bios on k8n neo2 platinum without single core athlon64?

    Hi.
I just bought a k8n neo2 platinum v1 and also managed to find a decently priced athlon64 X2 3800+ (which should work fine with this mobo according to msi's website and a number of forum posts I've seen across the web). The cpu hasn't arrived yet, but I'd appreciate if someone could answer something I'm wondering about before that happens. I've read that the mobo (like many others) will need a bios update to use dual core cpu's. A problem I have is that I don't have a single core athlon64 to use for flashing it. I did read on several forums and in some articles that a lot of mobos would be able to boot the dual core as a single core without the bios update, in which case I should be able to flash the bios with a boot disk, or similar. However, it occurred to me that it may only be nforce4 mobos that could do this.
Now, I'd really appreciate if anyone knew whether I could flash the bios with the dual core working as a single core, or if I have to start looking for a single core athlon64, to use for that purpose alone.
    Thanks in advance!

Finally got it assembled (after having to order a new fan, since I couldn't get the old one to work)!
It worked to boot without flashing first, the BIOS recognized the cpu as an unknown hammer cpu. After flashing (which went without any sign of trouble), I'm now up and running
    Thanks for the help  :D
Tried to used the CPUZ to check on the cpu version? Cos dual core doesn have a hammer but manchester only. Gd luck.

  • New CPU, Msi K8n neo2 platinum - no boot!

    Greetings!
    I got the following components:
    *MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum -54g MB
    *4 x 512mb Geil Value Ram
    *Gainward 7800GS+ Bliss 512mb AGP
    *Samsung Spinpoint 500gb SATA HD
    *Corsair 620HX (620W) PSU
*CPU AMD Opteron 180 Dual Core (upgrade from AMD 3000+ Winchester)
I recently upgraded my PC with a new HD, more ram, new CU Fan/heatsink - on an AMD 3000+ (Winchester). PC wouldn't boot - I did however manage to fix it. I think it was because of the ram, one of the bricks had some dust on it. Since then, my pc has worked 100%...
Today, however, I got a new PSU and CPU in the mail! A Corsair 620W PSU and an AMD OPTERON 180 Dual. I carefully cleaned the surface on the heatsink etc, and applied an appropriate amount of "Arctic Alumina" on the CPU/heatsink (as followed per instructions from Arctic). When I have connected everything, and fire my pc up - it just won't boot.. (The monitor won't light up).
Since then, I have carefully checked all wires, unplugged/replugged etc.
    But it just won't boot!
I do have the latest bios (1.0D), so it should support my CPU.
I should mention some "weird" things, though. When I try to boot up, everything seems normal (All fans are running), but there are no lights on my case! And I can't turn off the PC while holding down the "power" button on my case. I can't reset either.. as soon as I turn the PC on (by turning on the PSU power switch), the PC starts running. Normally I would have to push the button on my case. ALSO: I have cleared CMOS, still a black screen. And I have tried 2 different monitors, so I know it aint that either.
My old PSU was a Chieftec 360W one (and my case is a Chieftec also). The old PSU was connected to "SFAN2" on my MB,.. my new PSU isn't connected to any "SFAN" at all.. I doubt that has anything to do with the problem though?
Any suggestions on what I might do ?
Edit: D-bracket shows this (Yellow, red, red, yellow):
    BIOS Sign On
    - This will start showing information about logo, processor brand name, etc... - It stops here. No boot screen

Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 14-November-07, 21:14:42
remove power cord from the PSU(else will not work) and Clear CMOS Guide.
leave one memory stick only in a 1st DIMM slot near to CPU socket and try to boot.
    Done & done.
    Still no boot screen :(

  • Which power supply for k8n neo2 Platinum

I need to buy a new power supply for my computer. With the ATX12V v2.2 standard and ATX12V 2.01 and the "no -5v on new psu's" issue I'm at a loss as to what to look for. I have looked and cannot find what "standard" (is that even the correct term?) the k8n neo2 supports.
My main requirement is that the psu be 550-650 watts and have modular cables. I know someday I will have to upgrade my system to PCI-E and modern components, so I would like a PSU that would work now and in the future.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks
    system spec's
    Motherboard- MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

Video- ATI HIS 4670 1GB AGP

Why do you need 550-650W or is that just because of future needs? I would suggest one of the Corsair +12V single rail modular PSU's if you insist on the modular design. Check newegg for what they have for modular in the Corsair lineup. I'm sure you're aware that their price is considerably higher than the non-modular. K8 MB's that needed -5V are the early ones that had Creative Sound Blaster onboard audio.

        * $109.99
        * After $10.00 Rebate
        * $10.18 Shipping
That's what it is now but if you don't need it in a big hurry you can probably wait a while and get for the same price but with free shipping.
Edit: Gee, Ultra with blown caps, I just happen to have a xPRO 800W that blew some caps, repaired it and started going bad again and then got my TX650 to replace it. Got it for $70 after rebate (which I haven't received yet) by waiting for the right price, rebate and free shipping. VX550 would have been good enough but at the time I got the TX650 at a lower price.

  • Sound Question for K8N Neo2 Platinum

    Here's my current setup:
    AMD FX-53
    XP-120 heatsink
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Mobo.
    1 GB Crucial Ballistix (Slots 1 & 2)
    NVidia 6800 GT 256 MB
200 GB SATA SEAGATE HDD (SATA3)
    Lite-on Dual Layer  (Model# SOHW-1633S BLK)
    Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU
I am presently using the onboard sound, and I am able to hear left and right channels of sound when using media player, winamp, etc.  I can play both music and dvds.
I'm using the optical output on my mobo, and sending it to my Sony Home Theatre amplifier with an internal 5.1 decoder.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to get 5.1 surround sound.  I set the MSI Sound effect manager Speaker configuration to 6 Speakers, and I have my CD player transmitting sound via the normal 2 pin cd rom audio cable.
Does anyone know why I cannot get 5.1 surround sound when listening to DVD's???  Do I need to connect the digital output on my DVD burner?  If so, where does it connect to the mobo?

My DVD drive didn't come with any kind of driver CD.  I'm trying to use Media Player to run the DVD's.  Is it compatible with Dolby Digital?
Has anyone ever used PowerDVD?  This software came with the DVD burner, but I haven't installed it as I don't know much about it.

Ive already upgraded to the 1A bios and so far ive had no troubles. I still hate the look of the bios though, with all the options, i liked the look of the bios from v1.8, then 1.9 ruined it and i see that 1A is still the same.
I used the following parameters when i was flasing it as well, /py /sn /cd /cc /cp /wb /f /c.. I got it from another thread where someone suggested to use that everytime, but i have NOOO idea what /f and /c do    does anyone know??

  • Some questions for K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hi guys I'm quite new to Amd64 and just got the Neo2 plat and 3000+ from garage sales 2 days back. Just wanna ask the experts here is it true that sata 1 and 2 for this board doesn't have pci locked? I read this in 1 of the reviews before and it stated something like this...
We should note here, that we did run into issues using SATA 1 and 2 and overclocking. We quickly found out that these two SATA connectors did not lock with the PCI lock. We switched our drive to SATA 3 or 4 and everything was just fine. I am not sure if this can be fixed with a bios update, but unless you like hard drives corrupted, you should use SATA 3 and 4 if you plan on overclocking.
    http://www.bleedinedge.com/reviews/msi_neo/msi_neo_05.html
Anyone has any problems so far about this or this problem has been fixed by newer bios? Another thing is that I'm keen to overclock this chip as I'm reading those overclocking reviews but based on you guys experience, how far can I push using stock hsf with the current idle temp? My load temp for my current setup is 50c max running prime95 stable for 8hrs+
    Cheers

Thanks for the posts guys been a great help. Now I'm reading the issues of this board for the link below and thanks Supershanks for the link. You been a great help
I like MSI products especially their board coz I find their stuff well design and distro is good. I'm also using 865PE Neo2 PLS on my prescott no problem so far but after reading the related problems of this Neo2 Plat from the link above, can I say this board is a quite a failure product?
When I just got this board, I'm having problems when trying to change the HT Multiplier. It just empty when I hit enter and refused to go back even when I hit esc key. Reboot and tried a few times till I figured out it can be changed using the +/- key but this problem is gone after that and my first impression is my new board spolit? I mean don't the engineers or tech guys check through before they released these board to the market? There's no QC for this? Maybe I'm wrong to use the word, QC or etc sorry I might not be good at this. I wonder if they knew this bug in the first place? If they do but refused to fix it and just release the board that's lame. If they don't then the QC or whatever final checking/testing is real bad for this board coz they don't even realized this problem
Now I saw the link for another problem of mine again
    Problem description:
Starting-up the system gives you a hard lockup (freeze) with or without blank screen.
Some times, at boot time, the system says it is overclocked, but you know there is no overclock.
You must clear CMOS for be able to boot at every system startup.
I have this problem too and I'm going to read it but I don't need to clear bios, I just need to hit the power button again and the machine will boot to bios but this is quite irratating haha now I'm going to read to see how can I fix this problem.
Once again don't get the wrong idea, I'm not here to flame MSI coz I like their products too just that a quick browse of the link above made me realized this board has so many problems haha
Anyway thanks again for your time guys take care

  • New Bios for 865PE Neo2 FISR2

Does anyone have any idea when a new BIOS version might come out for the 865PE boards might come out?  I'm wondering because I was hoping one might come out to fix the problems they are having with OCZ and other ram's with manual cnofigurations and overclocking
    Thanks
    Trevor

I think it would do MSI better if they better organize their "tweak options" so people can understand what's going on and NOT end up surprised.
E.g. as observed by PeteJ61 in with memory timing = by SPD and  DRAM Freq = Auto
    [ http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/index.php?threadid=24347&boardid=10&styleid=1 ]
SLOW = no PAT/MAT + standard memory SPD settings + standard FSB + standard AGP/PCI
    FAST = PAT/MAT + fast memory timing + overclocked FSB overclocked AGP/PCI
    TURBO = PAT/MAT + fastER memory timing + overclocked FSB + overclocked AGP/PCI
    ULTRA = PAT/MAT + fastEST memory timing + overclocked FSB + overclocked AGP/PCI
    standard AGP/PCI = 66/33 MHz vs overclocked AGP/PCI = 70/35 MHz
    on "C" rev P4's, standard FSB = 200MHz vs overclocked FSB = 210 MHz
So if you want to be able to individually control them:
    1. To control PAT/MAT, select SLOW vs FAST
    2. To control memory timing, select anything other than Auto in DDR timing
My main problem is that Neo BIOS 1.6 (and probably Neo2 also) does NOT allow selection of standard AGP/PCI clock once I move up the FSB - bummer :( . For this, I use a windows utility named ClockGen to fine tune down to reasonable levels.
Would there be a valid reason why MSI just didn't select fixed ratios rather than all this "fine tuning"?

  • BIOS FOR K8n neo platinum

A while back there was a big post about how to properly upgrade your bios and he had listed every bios beta or official for download.  Anyone have that post? and What is the best bios for the K8n Neo platinum? Im still running on 1.1....

Quote from: Supershanks on 09-June-05, 04:24:05
Just the usual bios to bios temp tweak - no worries
Have been running with speedfan with a 4C offset think i can dith it now with 1.8
    Higher or lower?
Hmmm... My SpeedFan is running with no delta adjustments on the temps. I wonder if there is a discrepancy in what it's reporting & what it actually is after you boot into Windows
I'd try to go by what the Hardware Monitor says, but temp's always seem to be high when you're in BIOS anyway....

  • Ram question for K8N Neo2 Platinum

Hi all. I have the above mentioned motherboard in my system, with 2 x 512mb of DDR400 ram installed. I want to upgrade to 2gb at some stage in the near future, and was wondering if I can throw another two sticks of 512 in, or will I have to get 2 x 1gb sticks?
    Cheers.

4x512MB stick works, however not guaranteed to run att full speed DDR400 ( depending on what CPU model / RAM controller - winchester/Venice/Opteron etc.). In general the later cpu models handles 4 sticks better then the older.
If not the CPU onboard RAM controller is up for the task, the RAM will run at 333mhz speed and give some worse performance compared to DR400 1T setting, however you will still enjoy the 2GB performance compared to 1GB 1T setting, when using application that use that much RAM.
Best would be 2x1024 sticks, to be sure about getting DDR400 speed 1T setting, but it could be worth trying adding another two 512MB of same model, because of the lower cost and set DDR400 ( 200mhz) manual in bios and increase RAM+CPU voltage some.
( Syar´s Easybios 1C3 is a good and stable biosversion that sets RAM voltage to 2.75v and some other RAM settings as good levels as default.)
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=59711.0
Some time ago, I did run 4x512 stick at DDR400 2T speed with a Winchester and Venice cpu, but suffered from less OC potential, compared with 2 sticks.
With my new opteron cpu, I can have a good OC with same 4 sticks of RAM, so for me it´s clearly a big differance between the "desktop" and "server" cpu models, and how they handle RAM.

  • New Processor on K8N Neo2 Platinum Advice

Following on from getting my system stable after installing more Ram (thanks syar2003 and all who offered advice ) I'm now on the lookout for a new processor to round out my latest upgrades.
Currently I have what is listed in my signature. I was looking at the AMD64 FX-57 chips but at over £500 they are far too expensive. I was then looking at the single core AMD 4000+ at about £120 or there's AMD64 X2 4800's going for a little over £200. I predominately do gaming on my machine but I do other stuff at the same time, often downloading large files, running winamp/irc/ventrillo etc.
Should I just go for the AMD64 X2 4800 and make it the end chip for my current board ? I don't really want to upgrade to SLI or AM2 just yet as I fell there is much life left in this board.

Sounds good to me! AM2 is just a "stop-gap" solution for now, IMHO.
I'd still be using my Neo2 Plat as my primary board if it weren't for the AGP "dead-end".
My Neo2 was much easier to OC than my Neo4 Plat. Although, I finally ended up with simliar results on both. It was a bit harder to get there with the Neo4.
