New BIOS - Should I, or Shouldn't I?

Preface: This laptop has had its motherboard replaced twice due to the BIOS rev F.22 frying the Nvidia card.
Since getting it back, it is running BIOS rev F.0B and the Nvidia is still working, but this computer has been giving me fits. I'm preparing to do a clean install AGAIN to address issues that continue to happen.
I noticed BIOS rev F.23 is now available, so should I give it a shot or not?
I don't know what the heck to do anymore. This is all very frustrating.
Thank you in advance for any response.
This question was solved.

Q: OK, I see a couple issues here, and then I see an issue being resolved. Can you tell me what the main issue is so we can focus on resolving that?
A: The main problem is that this notebook does not want to keep functioning properly.
Q: You cannot boot into windows?
A: I was able to get it to boot again by rolling back the BIOS.
Q: Are you able to get into the BIOS by pressing F10 while booting up?
A: Yes. I never had a problem getting into BIOS, nor did I have a problem accessing the startup options via the escape key. Startup repair did not work. Only rolling back the BIOS did, and that was really not 'rolling back' anything. It shows the same version as before. It was more like a BIOS repair (I assume)
Q: Let me know what issues you're having with the notebook.
A: I'll try. Here ya go
1. With the default operating system installed alone, it runs for 2-3 weeks before it starts acting up. I've seen hard reboots, refusal to start the first time, touchpad shutting itself down, the DVD drive engaging randomly, and multiple entries in the events log showing files missing or corrupt. The event log also started mixing dates. Please see http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-e-g-Windows-8/Someone-Please-Explain-This-To-Me/m-p/2...
2. I did the BIOS upgrade to try to resolve the above issues. I went from v F:0B to v F:23. F:0B is what was installed on this after the last mobo replacement. I cannot get back to that now.
3. When I take the computer out of the office it tends to refuse to start back up again. This has happened more than once.
4. HP System Diagnostics says there is no battery installed on this machine.
5. HP System Diagnostics freezes at 19% when testing video memory. The computer has to be forced off at this point.
6. I have had to reinstall the operating system multiple times in the last month to keep it functioning without locking up/hard rebooting/glitching out on me.
I'm probably forgetting something, but I'd say this is enough to give you a good idea what I'm seeing.
Thanks,
Corey

  • X301 Secure Erase with new BIOS

    Hi there,
I switched to an Intel X18-M SSD on my X301 some time ago. I noticed that the new BIOS was released with Secure Erase functionality some time ago. As I was going to rebuild my laptop today, I thought I would give it a go. Turns out that this was a mistake. The utility failed on the Intel SSD necessitating a reboot after running for six hours. After the reboot, it turns out that the utility has set a hard drive password on the disk (there was not one before). As I have no way to know what password it has set, I am effectively locked out of my drive and it's a brick to all intents and purposes.
Does anyone (Lenovo in particular) know what password is set during the running of the Secure Erase functionality of the latest BIOS? My only alternative is to find out if there is a default master password from Intel. Since in principle, this should be blank, I believe that I am scuppered unless someone in Lenovo can tell me what password they set using the utility.
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Andy,
    From the instructions at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68369:
    Turn off the computer.
    Turn on the computer.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Select the Security menu of the BIOS Setup Utility menu.
Select the Solid State Drive menu. The following message is displayed. Erase the Solid State Drive in the HDD bay [Enter]
    Press Enter key.
Hitting Enter key makes showing next caution message and confirmation.
Yes confirmation shows next confirmation message.
If a harddisk password was set, a password prompt appears. Type the correct password.
Further process will start after entering the harddisk password.
Press F3 key several times to exit the BIOS Setup Utility.
As I did not have a HDD password set, I did not see step 9.
The utility is intended to perform a secure erase of a SSD using the ATA command set. In order to achieve this, it must first set a password on the drive (which is why it requires the user tell it the pwd if none has been set - see the end of this post for detailed documentation of this requirement).
In normal operation, the password would be cleared at completion of the operation. Because the operation failed however, the password is currently still there. Since I do not know what it is, I have been locked out of the (very expensive) drive.
In other tools which perform a secure erase (such as HDDERASE.EXE), the password which is set is documented for situations like this. This is not a security issue, rather it is one of following the correct process as laid down by the ATA standard.
It may well be that Lenovo has used a randomly generated password, in which case they have bricked my drive. If not, and a 'default' password is in use, then there is a means to recover the drive if they would document it. Since this is not a security issue, it really shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, since the password was set without my consent, the security issue is mine since the utility has effectively executed a denial of service on me.
See here for details of the ATA secure erase protocols to understand how the password is used:
    https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/ATA_Secure_Erase
The relevant section which explains why the Lenovo utility does this is:
"To successfully issue an ATA Security Erase command you need to first set a user password."
This is what the utility has done and by not subsequently removing it, has denied me access to my drive.
    Cheers.

  • Tecra M7 : new bios shutdowns the digitizer when closing the lid.

it took me a moment to find the problem : power saving ? attacking wacom ? no. some very stupid "feature" in the new bios from Toshiba.
quote from the toshiba download site:
    *Version 1.70 - 2006-10-24*
*Incorporated Intel requirements for improved stability.*
**Made changes to ensure that the digitizer is not activated when the LCD is closed.**
    *Version 1.60 - 2006-09-21*
    *Changed the temperature parameters.*
i have no idea what they were thinking but since when i move i often close the lid, it's very, very annoying because i need to reboot in order to get my tablet working again. the more recent features are not a matter, i'll keep xp pro.
now give me a download link to get the version 1.6 of the tecra M7 bios. thanks in advance, i count on you.

    Hello
Fact is that Toshiba offers all tablet PCs with WXP tablet edition and many additional software that offer full functionality when you use this tablet PC in tablet or normal mode.
So, in my opinion you should use tablet edition and install all available Toshiba tools and utilities.
I dont have much experience with tablet PCs but if you check Toshiba Europe support and download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Download you will see that your Tecra is fully supported for WXP tablet edition and you can download all necessary stuff.
Interesting is that there is also ready for download Installation instruction document with exact installation order.
You can also visit Canadian download page under http://209.167.114.38/support/Download/ln_bymodel.asp and see what is available there.
I really think you need to install all Toshiba specific tools and utilities to have full control and possibility to use it in both modes.
Sorry I cannot tell you more about all this.

  • Help with the new Bios 1.56 AND RAM Q

can high voltage for Ram, A-DATA 2X512 DDR500   2.85 for this case, can cause instablity, how do i know when to raise it, because it look like running fine with 2.70, and i oced it to 270mhz , 4000 in sandra.   so what should the voltage be? and what problem can high voltage do?
and in the new bios there is the REFRESH RATE (TREF)  and some crazy numbers, how should i know what to set it,
in A64 TWEAKER there is same option, Refresh Rate (TREF) , of course i am using the 200mhz, but can the 200mhz 15.6us cause to instabilty instead of the 3.9us ?
when ocing or not? how should i know if it causing any problems?
I am very very confused because i don't know how to oc right, i sometimes have crashes and blue screens when trying to oc, because always there is one option or setting that can make the instablity and to get real, there too Freaking many,
and how do i know for sure that Agressive timing doesn't causing to any errors or anything else? crashes and all kind.
PLZ if someone could answer those question i will be greatly happy, because i have no idea what to look for and i have some anoying problem with that, my ram is good for ocing and i really want stable ram with max speed.
and i think i am using the 1T i cant change it or anything. no where to change anyway.

  • How do I get MSI to Send a New BIOS Chip? (EOM)

    .

    Hi Curbstone -
If you are in the United States, call their technical support number at (626) 581-3001.  You'll have the best luck if you get through to a live person.  My personal experience at getting a new BIOS chip out of their California Technical Support office was that voice mail messages left at technical support result in no response, e-mail message result in no response, faxed in problem report forms result in no response.  When the line was personally answered, I had a new BIOS chip in hand three business days later, free of charge.
If you are elsewhere in the world, click on the Contact Us link at http://www.msi.com.tw .
Another option is to link to http://www.badflash.com and request they send you a replacement BIOS chip.  Cost is US$20 plus shipping.  It may be necessary to e-mail them the BIOS you wish to have flashed.
The following assumes that you have a K7N420 Pro board (you don't have a sig line to tell otherwise...):
If you know someone with an EPROM burner (or are friendly with a local electronics or computer store that has one) you can download the BIOS image of your choice and have it burned onto a new chip.  The chip is either a Winbond 49F002UP12B or a SST 49LF020. The chip is a Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (or PLCC) module. Shouldn't cost too much (maybe US$10 - 20).  You can pull the PLCC module from your board carefully using a small jewelers screwdriver or use a PLCC Chip Puller from Radio Shack - part # 276-2101 (about US$8.).

I can confirm that what he's saying is true, I also have a 980 with 143 bios and MSI Live Update is telling me that there is a new bios 113 for my 980 Gaming.
So what do we do now? update it to 113 or leave it with 143?
Bcbarnes, lower number doesn't mean its a downgrade, they are just for different batches of 980 Gaming GPU's.
113 should really be for 980 gaming gpu's with serial number of lets say 03s for example, so it is strange that MSI Live Update is telling us to install 113 since our 980 serial code is 11s.

  • Old bios - no dual core, new bios - no graphic card

Hello. I have a old computer with a MSI K8N Neo Platinum 2 that had the 1.5 bios version. I bought an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Toledo and it wasn't being recognized as it should ("AMD Hammer Unknown Model") and only 1 core was being detected. I've updated the bios and it got recognized correctly and it's Windows experience score got from 4.2 to 5.1 and it is ok now I guess. But, with the updated bios my graphic card's driver fails to load. I tested several of them both from chipset and card manufacturer's and or they fail to load or I get a BSOD 0x50 . I've tried to find a bios version that didn't blow up the graphic card driver while fixing the dual core issue but the very version that fixes the dual core issue is the one that blows the graphic card driver. And it's name is "1.9". I tried all newer bios and the same happens with all of them. Basically, or I get dual core or I get graphic drivers. This all is happening on Windows 7 Home Basic but I'm afraid will happen on any operative system if it is a bios issue. I also changed agp related configurations in the bios but nothing changes. My graphic card is an ASUS AH4650 AGP.
    Any help is appreciated.

That PSU you have now can be bought for a little as € 5 ($ 7), shipping costs are more expensive then that
I take this opportunity to pose another question to all of you friendly individuals that are helping me with my issue.
As I told you, this pc is dated and I don't really need the PSU to be that future proof. I see that you have only recommended units branded Corsair. In the shop where I buy this kind of stuff there are another brands so I'll leave you the list hoping you can recommend me one that fits this system and that is a little bit less expensive in case you can find a good match. Pardon me if I'm abusing of your time.
    Site: http://www.novoatalho.pt/
In the left navigation menu, please chose "Componentes" - "Fontes de Alimentação", and select a brand of them or press the menu itself on "Fontes de Alimentação" to get a list of all of them.
Don't know how/if the memory I use makes it different but I have 4 dimms of 2GB combined. I was using only 1.5G but now with the new firmware the motherboard is handling 1GB + 500MB + 250MB + 250MB. The rest is hard disks and cd drives, I'm not even using a PCI card.
If you still just recommend Corsair, is absolutely fine.
Btw, another thing, please remember that this motherboard has a VGA slot not PCI-E. Don't know if that changes something for the PSU.

Just for the hell of it, I decided to turn down my CPU multiplier, pump the bclk to 200, and see if I could get things working with my memory running at 1600. I left the DIMM voltage at Auto in BIOS, and booted into windows. Started up the MSI Overclocking center.... and it was reporting a DIMM voltage of 1.9. I was..... shocked.... I tried to change it to 1.65 in the OC center, but my machine locked, then it rebooted 3 times and reset it's bios settings. Things seem fine, don't think my CPU was damaged.... but seriously, what the hell?
Mechsner, I know you've said you don't trust windows voltage readings. Could this be a case of inaccurate readings? Can the OC center not be trusted at all? It's matched my BIOS settings in the past.... but this time was just scary.

    Hello!
First off , i'm sorry if this has been posted somewhere , i did use the search button!

    - Add buzzer beep warning message with memory unplugged.
Now , I have 7368v1A already , should I upgrade to the new one?
What's new in it ? Are there some new CPU's supported for this new version as i'm planning on buying new processor?

    Hi!
2009-04-03 MSI releasen new BIOS v1.9 to MSI P45 Neo
Fixed: - Disabled 5V USB function under S4/S5.
Tell me plz - what that mean ? It's very recommended update or not?
    Many thanks!

If you have no problems with the BIOS Version you are currently using, there is no need to update the BIOS (and it is not recommended to do that either).
    Quote
Tell me plz - what that mean ?
    S4 - State = Hibernation
    S5 - State = Shutdown-State
The BIOS Update should turn off the 5V power supply to the USB Ports when the system is shutdown (S5) or in Hibernation State (S4).

  • New bios might help those with false temp readings...

Well MSI just sent me a new bios to try to fix the false temp reading issue and at first I thought it was the already-released Bios 1.25 but after comparing the checksums of both it seems to be a different bios, being Bios 1.2A... Anyway, I stuck the files on a floppy and then booted from the floppy and flashed it and to no avail, the temps are still wrong... I have a Clawhammer core and was hoping to get some input from other people with Clawhammer and Newcastle cores... Here's the email conversation I had with them along with a link to the bios they sent me at the bottom...

    Dear Alex,
Thank you for contacting MSI Technical Support.
The CPU temperature is different and there is tolerance difference between the data showed and the real temperature according to the CPU model and type and even produce date and manufactory . And this MB supports thermal protection function, it will prevent the MB and CPU from overheating. So please don't worry about the temperature.
We have tested various CPU with newcastle core in our lab but we can't find the same problem. We'll keep checking with AMD and contact them to get more different CPU to analyse it futher together with them. New BIOS will released right now if we have some findings and figure out the sloution. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Thanks for your supporting MSI product.  Please feel free to let us know if you still have any further issues or inquires.

Subject: False CPU Temperature Readings with K8N Neo Platinum
When will you guys be releasing a new bios for the K8N Neo Platinum that fixes the issues with false CPU temperature readings? As far as I know, none of the beta bioses that are out right now fix that particular issue. I have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (Clawhammer). My temperatures have ranged anywhere from 60C to 184C, it's obvious that these temperatures are wrong because the computer would should itself down somwhere around 75C. I am also sure the the CPU heatsink is seated correctly as I have reseated it many times. I took a look around on your forums and also noticed that I am not the only one having these problems as tons of people with Clawhammer and Newcastle cores are having the same problem. Is there an estimated release date for a fix on this?
    Thanks, Alex
    Bios 1.2A
Whatever results you guys come up with, please post it in this thread so I can send it back to MSI and hopefully it will help them in fixing this problem...
Oh and the usual disclaimer, don't try and sue me if you screw over your motherboard, I'm simply passing along the information they sent me...

For anyone who is still having problems, please post the information written on the top of your CPU so I can send it back to MSI to help them fix this. If you can't get the info off the top of your CPU, take a screenshot of the CPU tab in CPU-Z and send it to my email at [email protected]. In my next email I will also let them know that there are some people with Newcastles that still have problems. Thanks.

Well I had ten people with Newcastle cores test the bios and for all of them, the false temp readings were fixed. But those of us with Clawhammer's are still having problems... Any idea why the problems were fixed with Newcastle cores but not Clawhammer cores?
    Thanks, Alex
