New black MacBook, USB issue

I have a friend (no, seriously) that just made "the switch" and moved to a black MacBook at my urging. It's brand new, but from day 1 he has been complaining that anything he plugs into one of the USB ports keeps dropping out randomly. He said he found on some website that this is just a MacBook issue and that the solution is to use the other port. Then today he said the other one intermittently started drop out too.
I say it's broken, he should send it back and get a new one... but I don't know enough about the MacBooks to tell him that it's a unique issue.
Anyone else seen anything like this?

Hey guys.
I use Scratch Live also, and BTW its Serato.
anyway, this is quite the problem over at Scratchlive.net
Many of the users have run tests and have come to the conclusion that when the SL1 box is plugged into the "bad" port, that being the USB closest to the firewire cable, it is somehow linked to the track pad, and therefore goes into some kind of sleep mode. If you leave the trackpad alone, when the SL1 box is plugged into that port, let it sit for 20 seconds, then touch the pad you will get a drop out.
This is the case for both the MBP, and the MB.
The funny thing is...when we run Scratch Live in windows XP, using bootcamp...the problem is not there, WHAT-SO-EVER.
So this is obviously a Mac OSX issue.
The problem still persists and I've got the Developer versions of 10.4.9, and still the problem is there.
This isnt just a case for Scratch Live either, it happens with ANY audio interface that is plugged into the bad port.
I.E. Mbox, Scratch Live...anything USB audio interface related.
So hope this helps and check the link...its a big problem in this DJ community.
lol.
help?
any Developers out there that can write a code that prevents the track pad going into sleep mode?

  • How I copied all my Outlook Express data to my new Black MacBook

    Hi there!
I just made the jump to the "Apple side" buying a shiny new Black Macbook, and having already got a lot of usefull information from this forum, I just wanted to give my little contribution...
Here follows how I managed to copy ALL my Microsoft Outlook Express messages, settings and accounts from my "old" PC to my new MacBook:
I just installed Mozilla Thunderbird on my PC and let the automated "import" function transfer all my data from Outlook Express; then I installed Thunderbird to the MacBook too (skipping all the setup procedures that start at the first run of the program).
Then, on the "PC side", I located the folder where all the Thunderbird profile data is stored: it is something like "xxxxxxxx.default" (in my case "voakmfhs.default") and is stored in "C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles"
So it was just a matter of copying all the "xxxxxxxx.default" folder from the PC to the Mac (on the "Mac side" just search for the "Thunderbird" folder and then open the "Profiles" subfolder where you have to copy all the stuff)
The last step is to edit the Thunderbird "profiles.ini" file on the Mac, replacing the name of default folder that was assigned during the installation (which you can safely delete), with the name of the one copied from the PC...
For any further question, feel free to ask
Hope this is of some help!
    Ciao for now
    Sergio

  • Black MacBook Screen Issue

I have a black macbook that I purchased in the spring of 08 that hasn't had any problems until a few months ago. Whenever I would open my computer the screen would turn black but as I went to shut it the screen would come back on. For awhile I was able to jiggle the screen back and forth until I got the screen to stay lit while the computer was open but it's gotten so bad lately that moving the screen back and forth isn't working and the computer only thinks it's open with a lit screen when it's very close to being shut. Does anyone know what the problem might be and whether or not it can be fixed? If it can be fixed, is it worth the money to fix it or am I better off buying a new macbook pro?

The same thing has happened to me now three times too. It seems to be very unpredictable. Zapping PRAM always fixes it. Man why did I buy a first gen MacBook? I usually always wait till the first revision. Oh Well.
Do you also have the click preceding each new sound? To check for this plug in headphones or powered speakers and turn the volume all the way up on the speakers. Then turn the Mac's volume all the way down. Now hit the mute and unmute button and see if you hear a tick or a click in the headphones each time the unmute is turned on. The audio system has a flaw. I have verified it so far on every MacBook I have tried it on.

  • Quick review of my wife's new Black MacBook

OK - so SWMBO chose Black last night at the Apple Store. Store upgraded the stock 512MB (2x 256MB sticks) with 2x 512MB sticks and ran memory test to ensure all was AOK - it was.
This MacBook replaced her 14" iBook G3 700MHz with 30gig HD, DVD-ROM/CD-RW and 640MB memory running Mac OS X 10.4.6 with all latest Apple updates.
First impressions during use and transferring wife's files from her old iBook.
    1. Startup was flawless and connected FW400 cable between MacBook and iBook and restarted iBook in Target mode and selected to have all of wife's home files transferred along with other network settings etc. Transfer completed without problems.
    2. As soon as startup completed I Restarted (re-booted) and selected Software update. Geeeesh - there was a lot of stuff that Apple hadn't installed on this stock machine. Downloaded and installed all this stuff without problems.
    3. Now I ran Monolingual to remove all languages except English. This freed up some 3.2 GB of HD space. This took around 30 mins and placed a great deal of stress on the CPUs and HD. CPU activity was well above 80% (using Top.app) and Monolingual chewed up lots of physical RAM and started eventually to cause pageouts on the 1gig of physical RAM. The top left quadrant of the MacBook got very hot. The lower surface of the quadrant was extremely hot and would be bothersome had it been on my lap. The cooling fan could be heard during most of the time Monolingual was running. I believe the Monolingual also removed a large number of language files - as many as 287,000 as before running it I recall seeing 437,000 files and now only have 154,000 files (can't be absolutely sure about these numbers as I did not log them at the time). However, if this is true then not only do you get some 3.2 gig of HD space back a huge reduction in file count which helps with SpotLight indexing and anything else that has to scan the file system structure.
    4. Ran SuperDuper to backup the HD to and external FW400 LaCie 60gig pocket HD. Took about 30 mins. The first run at this caused SuperDuper to complain it could correct the internal HD's permissions. So I quit SuperDuper and launched Disk Utility and ran Repair permissions. This completed with errors and then launched SuperDuper a second time and it did not have problems with the HD permissions. I observed that SuperDuper (not a universal binary) ran far quicker on the MacBook than it did on the iBook - I would say around 2x faster. After SuperDuper cloned the MacBook's HD I then verified I could boot up from the external FW400 LaCie drive. This worked flawlessly.
    5. QT Pro didn't come across from wife's iBook so had to reset the QuickTime Pro registration key.
    6. The MacBook screen real estate is less than the 14" iBook. It really is the height of the MacBook's screen that causes this. The MacBook's screen is same width as the iBook but is about 1.5" less in height. Overall the MacBook feels, looks and is smaller than the 14" iBook. The MacBook's screen display is clearer and brighter than the iBook's. The MacBook's screen display is very vibrant and more colorful than the iBook for sure.
    7. Opening the MacBook screen/lid takes a bit of getting used to compared to the method needed for the iBook.
    8. Keys are flush with the MacBook's outer surface which means they do not contact the screen when screen closed. The iBook's keys aren't and stick up some and can over time mark the screen with finger tip grease etc.
    9. MacBook's trackpad is larger than the iBook's and very welcomed - as is the two-finger scrolling feature.
    10. Adding a pic for accounts was fun as the iSight feature is by default used to capture a mug shot of yourself if you so desire.
    11. Performance of MacBook compared to iBook 14" 700MHz is not very noticeable IMO when doing Safari and Mail type activities. Things do happen with more snappyness though. Yes - SuperDuper ran 2x faster but normal use of MacBook so far doesn't tell me it's 2x2000MHz/700MHz or some 5.7x faster wrt CPU clock rates. I'm sure the MacBook is faster at doing CPU intensive things but have not done any scientific performance testing to post results. I get the feeling that this MacBook is maybe 2x to 3x faster and more snappier than the iBook. The Disk Inventory X utility screams on this MacBook.
    12. MacBook is lighter, thinner and more easily handled than the 14" iBook. It will also fit into the iBook 14" Bootq bag I bought for wife last Christmas.
    13. My wife likes the MacBook very much after a morning of use. She maintains the Black MacBook is cool looking and more professional looking than the White and pleased she chose the Black.
    14. We are both very pleased with the Black MacBook purchase at this time.
The 14" iBook is now to be handed down to daughter #1 as a birthday+Xmas present.

Update to my item 4 as there were some typo errors in it (sorry about that).
    4. Ran SuperDuper to backup the HD to and external FW400 LaCie 60gig pocket HD. Took about 30 mins. The first run at this caused SuperDuper to complain it could not correct the internal HD's permissions. So I quit SuperDuper and launched Disk Utility and ran Repair permissions. This completed without errors and then launched SuperDuper a second time and it did not have problems with the HD permissions. I observed that SuperDuper (it's a universal binary) ran far quicker on the MacBook than it did on the iBook - I would say around 2x faster. After SuperDuper cloned the MacBook's HD I then verified I could boot up from the external FW400 LaCie drive. This worked flawlessly.

  • 1st gen Black MacBook - airport issues

I have a June 2006 Black MacBook that I recently upgraded to 10.5.6. Since then, I have had very poor airport connectivity. Where I once had excellent WiFi, I now have none. What the heck is going on?? I often must sit adjacent to the signal source in order to connect...even 10 feet of merely air space will cause my WiFi to fail. What's the point!

    HI,
Your Airport preference files might be corrupted as a result of the upgrade to 10.5.6.
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your MacBook. See if that makes a difference in the signal, of not...
Are you using an Airport Extreme Base Station? Airport Express? If so, try resettting.

  • New Black macbook owner,

hey whats up guys, im new to apple and macbook i've been a pc fan for almost 8 years, i bought the black one with 2.0ghz and 80gig harddrive, i've read some previous posts about cleaning out the mac before installing anything important i read that a bit to late haha, well im trying to play my AVI movies on my Macbook so i can watch them inbetween my classes. any idea what programs i would need? i tried flip4mac, 3ivx and i cant get a picture to appear. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just went through fresh install myslef - and had the same issues.
    Here's what I did.
    1. Download VLC player - comes with all kinds of codecs so you may play avi files right away
    2. you can play avi files on QuickTime - first downlaod the codecs from perian.org (http://perian.org) - once you've got them installed into the right folder - you can play avi's on QT - you have find the right folder - under systems/library/QuickTime - if I remember corectly
Anyway the program will guide you through it
IMPORTANT NOTE - I wasnt getting sound on QuickTime at first - but then I tried playing the avi file using front row and it worked from then on - WHY? I DON NOT KNOW - but if you can't get sound - try front row
    Good Luck

  • New Z87-GD65 USB Issues?

Trying to find out if I need to return a newly installed board to the store for an exchange. I have another PC, with this same board, that was built back in August, and it works great.
If I go into the BIOS, sometimes the USB drive is detected and sometimes not. Had to reboot 3 or 4 times to even get it to see a usb drive to load Windows 8.1.
In windows it will detect a usb flash drive about half the time. I have an ASUS N-53 USB Wireless stick that has only been detected one time. NOTE - All of the items I have plugged in work without fail, on the same board, in another PC. I thought it first it was maybe the front ports in the case (Fractal Design R4) but it has the same issue on the backside ports that are coming directly off the board.
I have reset the bios to defaults and also flashed the bios to latest. Also tried it on bios B to make sure it wasn't something specific to BIOS A. Since I was having the issues before even installing Windows, I'm going with a faulty board. Before I go through the trouble of returning the board, is their anything else I can do to check?

    As a follow-up...
I went back to the store and did an exchange. The new board is working like a champ, so I assume the USB controller was bad on the original. Just got unlucky on that last one.
As I stated previously, this is my second Z87-GD65 and I really like it. I would recommend.

  • Brand new black macbook, not enough battery time!

hello! i got my macbook about a month ago. it will usually go about 3.5 hours on a charge if my screen is at the lowest brightness setting. this morning i turned it on, fully charged, put my screen on fully dark and set garage band to record. i do this a lot (i'm a musician and record all of my private lessons and practice sessions with garage band, and barely ever remember to bring my charger). this morning, however, after 45 minutes of having GB run with the screen on black, i turned the screen back on only to find that the battery said i had only 50 minutes of charge left. before i started recording, i had it on for about 10 minutes, in which time it went from 99% charge to 90% charge.
i have had an issue with the fan seemingly always running, to the point that if i am listening to music i have to put earbuds in to even have a shot at hearing it (granted, it's classical music, so it's quiet to start out with, but still). i read a post about the fan problem, and pretty much as soon as i opened it, my fan quieted down (figures). for instance, right now, i only have safari running. no music playing. and it's on full blast. any help is greatly appreciated for either of these issues. thank you!

Hi robyn_basson: It may be worth checking to see if there is "hung" application. Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. Once it is running, click to show CPU, sort by CPU Activity, and also select show all processes and see if there is an activity or application using a high amount of the CPU. Print jobs seem to be a popular culprit.
    Good Luck

  • New Black Macbook Concern

Just got my Macbook (Love black) have 2 concerns thus far.
    1) The left shift button kinda jams a little, but it now seems fine after a couple of hours of use, is this typical?
    2) My bigger concern is the track pad. It works fine but looking at the surrounding casing I can see the surrounding edge humps up ever so slightly in the upper middle. If I push on the casing it goes back down flush, is this normal?
My biggest concern was stuck pixels and it looks like I have a good display. Will Apple give me a new machine only being hours new if this is bothersome or must I live with a 10% restock if it bugs me?

Only your vendor knows. You will have to return the computer and discuss the problems with them to ascertain whether they will replace it or repair it.

  • Black Macbook Startup Issues

    Hey guys.
I'm having a distressful startup issue with my Macbook (13-inch, black). It's happened to me before, but that was a few months ago and everything was fine. Now it's happening again and I'm getting worried that the workaround I've found won't work anymore.
The first time it happened, I wanted to restart my computer because I had installed a bunch of things and it was running a little slow. After I restarted, I heard the "GONG", the apple appeared, and the spinning gear also appeared. It seemed to be working, but after a few minutes, the apple changed to a "do not enter" sign.
I tried resetting the P-RAM to no avail, and finally ended up starting up in Safe Mode (by holding the Shift Key) which at least allowed me to start up my computer. From there, I was able to reset and my computer started up normally after that just fine.
Now, last night, the same thing started happening. There were a few different things that happened this time. For one, I got a big gray box on my screen that told me I needed to reset my computer in a few different languages. Secondly, (the only thing I can attribute the cause to) was that I had opened iChat for the first time in 5 months or so. Shortly after is when I got the box.
So I reset and started having the same problem. I've reset in safe mode now, and am currently installing an update to OSX 10.6.3.
The only programs running at the time of the incident were:
    -Google Chrome
    -Text Edit
    -iCal
    -iTunes
Any help you guys have for me would be GREATLY appreciated! I took it to an Apple store the first time it happened and they didn't know what was wrong with it. :/

Well, after booting in Safe Mode and installing the update, it started up just fine. I am afraid that this is going to happen again, though. Any help you guys have would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Black MacBook USB problem

The USB ports of my MacBook suddenly have a very odd problem: If I plug in any USB device like a mouse or a keyboard the computer won't recognise them. It does, however, recognise them when they're plugged in before booting or in sleep mode before waking it up. Then everything works perfectly. Help anyone?

I have the same problem with my USB ports (with a white Macbook). zapping the pram did nothing. Anyone have an idea why this happening or how to fix it?

  • WebCam and New Black MacBook

I recently sold off my first generation BlackBook and replaced it with the newer 2.16Ghz BlackBook (wanted 3Gig RAM and 200Gig hard drive, and 802.11n).
This morning I fired up EvoCam which runs great on a MacBook with the built-in iSight but I noticed right off that the fan turned on and remained as long as EvoCam was running. I checked the Activity Monitor and saw that EvoCam was taking up 76% of the CPU usage. Whoaaaa.... what is that all about?
I checked my version number and it is the latest so I sent off an email to support at EvoCam to ask if this was normal (and were they working on an upgrade to reduce such CPU usage)?
So my question now is, is there any other WebCam software I can run using my iSight as a camera? I see a product called "Periscope" but can't get much info on it.
Is anyone else running webcam software on their MacBooks and if so, what is it and how does it perform?
    Thanks!

    Got it!
    Does this modification void guarantee?
    No.
How would you go about doing this?
    Follow this video.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/macbook/macbook/high. html
    Is it worth it?
It is if you have a lot of apps running at once like I do, or if you are running RAM-hungry applications like Photoshop.
How To Determine Your Memory Needs >>
    EDIT:
What stops someone from putting 2x 2GB RAM modules?
You could stick 2-2GB modules in there, but the logic board only recognizes 3G in MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The new MacBook Pro model will recognize 4GB now though.

  • Macbook USB issues

    HI!,
    I have a macbook1,1 1.83gz.
I've had it since the week they were released in the UK. I've had an Edirol UA-25 for about the same amount of time and used to use it to do recording on the move with my macbook.
I reinstalled Tiger about two weeks ago and my macbook will no longer recognise it. I also have a logitech G500 mouse that the macbook won't recognise.
I've tried everything! So I'm here as a last resort for help.
    I've tried:
    Installing drivers for UA-25
restarting macbook then plugging in device, nothing.
having the device plugged in when installing drivers, nothing.
I upgraded to leopard this week and still have the same issues. The mouse is the same too.
I've read a lot of people with the same kind of issues but unfortunatly I haven't read a fix.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks for reading.

The driver download is a .sit file (like a .zip file) and needs to be expanded using [Stuffit Expander|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/182]. The file is probably resting in your download file until you unSit it. -GDF

  • New Black MacBook Mod!

My new MacBook Mod, Pictures may be fuzzy or slightly miscolored because they were taken with a RAZR.

It's not hard to get in at all. The only thing that is bad is that apple paints the back of the logo with white paint; it took a couple hours for me to scrape it off without ruining the logo, but it was worth it!
