New bookmarks lost whenever Firefox restarts

I've been having bookmark problems ever since I started using Firefox 4. What happens is that I add or update my bookmarks, but after a reboot or a Firefox restart, my new bookmarks are not saved. I've tried xmarks, but something always changed the bookmarks to an older version. I've tried Firefox sync and the result was the same.
Then I found this fix on Mozilla:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Bookmarks%20not%20saved
I followed the instructions but Firefox always chooses an older version of my bookmarks. The only thing I can do now is to export my latest bookmarks and import them whenever I have to restart Firefox. This problem also occurs on my work computer (iMac).
I'm at my wit's end with this bookmark problem. Could anybody help me?

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

I upgraded to Firefox 4 for the MacBook Pro and now cannot see how to create a new Bookmarks folder. The new look doesn't have a "New Folder" button. How do I create a new Bookmarks folder in 4?

Simply open bookmarks, r/click under any entry and select new folder. Name and close. thecolonel.

  • How can I obtain prior history that was lost on Firefox restart?

I installed the update of Firefox, restarted and Firefox had lost all my tabs, did not save them, and lost all my history. I want to go back to those tabs and open all of them. Was working on a project and need those websites to finish!

You can't. If you had a backup of the places.sqlite file from before deleting the browsing history, you could restore that file. As far as "never remember my history", nothing is saved or "recorded".

Since transferring to a new PC (Windows 8) all my Bookmarks & options settings keep reverting to the initial "Defaults" whenever I restart.
This affects all my Bookmarks; Menu Bar settings; Add-on settings; history; Home Page et al
    In fact everything

What files did you transfer to the new computer?
It sounds that there is a problem with the file that stores the preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

  • I can not delete my history and adding new bookmarks. Upgrading to later Firefox versions and/or re-installing didn't help. The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.

The address bar still shows the web addresses of old and whenever I make new bookmarks, it's always gone as if it was never made.
Also, I have noticed that every once in awhile you can not close tabs you've opened, either by pushing on the X button and/or clicking on the mouse to close it. Although closing the window and opening it again (without closing the Firefox application) seemed to rectify the problem in the short term, it's becoming quite annoying.

    I think I have a solution.
First, download the add-on SQManager. This should be included with FireFox, it is really good.
Look for the file '''moz_hosts''' in the folder '''places.sqlite'''.
Don't delete the file, just delete the information in the file. My file has over 3600 websites, which go back years!! I did not know they were there, but I was frustrated about not being able to get rid of them. They popped up every time I used the address bar. Clearing my history would not get rid of them.
This is where they are stored!! I found that by deleting the pesky web site from '''moz_hosts''', it does not appear in my address bar anymore!!!
I think that if I just delete all the websites in moz_hosts....
    Wa-la...History Gone!!!
As long as you don't delete the file, just empty it, FireFox won't know the difference. It will just keep adding websites to it until you empty it again.
Why running "clear recent history" doesn't do this, I don't know. You are doing manually what "clear recent history" is not doing.
Please tell me if you see any flaw in this.

  • New bookmarks added don't appear anymore when Firefox is restarted

    Hello everybody,
I have a Mac OS X Lion server which runs an OpenDirectory as master.
About 50 clients connect to this server, also with Mac OS X Lion installed on each client.
Each User has his Homedir on the server, and Firefox is installed on each client.
The problem is : if a client adds a bookmark in Firefox, when Firefox is restarted, the new bookmark is not there anymore.
Firefox can retreive its bookmarks when the client logs in with a local user on the client.
So, I thought it was a problem with rights on Homedir, but they are the same on the local user as on the Opendirectory user.
So I looked farther in fireFox sqlite databases, and I saw this after installing Sqlite Manager Firefox extension :
I opened Firefox and Sqlite Manager and saw that :
when a bookmark is added, moz_bookmarks table from places.sqlite database receives a new record ; but when Firefox is stopped, either modification are not committed, or table reverts in its preceeding state, because, when Firefox is restarted, the new bookmark is not there.
So, I retried to add a new bookmark, and from Sqlite Manager, i forced changes committing through 'commit;' command ; and yet, when I stopped and restarted Firefox, The new bookmark was here !

    Hi cor-el,
    I already tried your two links from Mozilla support without success ;
I also to tried to delete places.sqlite and even entire profile : in these cases, curiously, it is possible to add a new bookmark, restart Firefox and retrieve the new bookmark, but only once !
If we try yet to add another bookmark, it is not here when Firefox is restarted.
Here is a copy of 'ls -l' in profile during the process of adding a new bookmark. (excuse me for editing format, but I guess you already know what file to look at)

  • Whenever a new window (or even Firefox program windows like Add-ons, Bookmarks, Settings, etc) is opened, Firefox freezes for 30+ seconds before opening it.

I have reset Firefox, then reinstalled, removed all of the extensions and plugins, uninstalled and reinstalled Flashplayer, updated Java, etc. I have also created new profiles, which have the same problem.
The problem does not appear in Safe Mode, which is odd because I have disabled all of the built-in extensions and have run the program in regular mode, and the problem still occurs. Right now I am using no extensions, no plugins, and no themes, and Firefox still freezes for a short period of time whenever I try to open a new window.
This problem does not happen in IE or Chrome. I have not installed any programs recently; the problem started happening randomly.

    Hi,
[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode] also disables the themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. and hardware acceleration - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u Advanced] > '''General''' > '''Use hardware acceleration when available'''. All these settings/options/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if a theme, or hardware acceleration is causing issues. Disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, and some types of add-ons in normal mode may require a Firefox restart - a quick way to restart Firefox is to press [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/GCLI '''Shift''' + '''F2'''], type '''restart''' and '''Enter'''.

A couple of troubleshooting options you can try. This may be caused by an add-on, follow the procedure in this link - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
If that does not help, there may be some corruption in your profile folder (location where user data is stored). As a test try creating a new profile, if that works you can selectively copy data such as bookmarks and passwords from the old profile. For details on doing that see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows and https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Recovering+important+data+from+an+old+profile

  • I have Firefox version 34.0.5. All my bookmarks have disappeared and I can't add new bookmarks. The "library" remains empty. Help!!

Have tried to restore a bookmarks file (I have a dozen or so) but I get the message "unable to process the back up file". Clicking the "star" to add a new bookmark appears to work until I click "show all bookmarks" which reveals a still empty library. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Thank you very much for your help.
What worked for me was to close down Firefox, delete the "places.sqlite" file and restart Firefox. My bookmarks instantly came back. This file is inside the "application data" folder which is a hidden folder. You must unhide the "application data" folder first in order to delete the "places sqlite" file using windows explorer.
There may be an easier way but this worked for me.
    Thanks again

  • Profile in use, can't be accessed, FF only worked when I created a new profile, are bookmarks lost?

My computer crashed, when I restarted it and restarted FF (6.0.12.1739, with google, adobe and similar plugins), I got the "already running" message.
    I use Windows 7.
When I learned to look for the parent lock file, not only was it not there, but my original profile folder to be empty.
So I created another profile folder, and now FF works, but I cannot access my old profile folder.
When I open the location where it should be, nothing's there. But if I go to profile manager, I see my original profile '' is'' still there (and apparently it's where it should be). I tried typing its location in Start, to no avail.
'''I tried making all folders visible,''' as some sites recommend for people who use Windows, but this did not make my old profile folder visible.
Are my bookmarks lost for good?
I have restarted the computer several times 'til now.

I forgot to mention that I can't access my old profile, because whenever I click on it, I continue to get the "already running" message. I know that I exit FF when I access profile manager.

  • Firefox Sync does not update automatically when I add a new bookmark.

I use one desktop and one notebook at the same time. Firefox Sync does not update bookmarks between my desktop and notebook when I add a new bookmark from one device or the other. Firefox Sync only updates when I manually sync my data from each device. When I used Google Chrome, the Sync feature updated my bookmarks almost instantly. Is there any way I can make Firefox automatically sync whenever I update my bookmark?

Your imported bookmarks from IE should all be in one folder named "From Internet Explorer". The imported Bookmarks are kept separate for easier identification by the user. You can move them to other folders outside of that folder if you wish; you can also delete any duplicates that you may have placed into Firefox Bookmarks/folders before the import.

  • Firefox 21 running on Windows 7 won't allow creation of new bookmarks

I just installed Firefox 21 on a PC running Windows 7. I cannot access the "About" screen, and Firefox will not create new bookmarks. Neither clicking on the star in the navigation window or right-clicking the dropdown menu works.
I might add that every time Firefox has installed a new version after version 19, some such problem has arisen. What gives?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • I got a new computer and installed Firefox, but don't know how to transfer the bookmarks from Firefox on the old computer.

This has to be one of the the most common problems that people encounter. We all get new computers every so often, and we all need to keep the old bookmarks when we get a new computer and install the new browser.
I feel like I must be among the small minority of people who do not know how to do this. My older computer is not dead, it just got old (it uses XP). I have been keeping it around until I get all of the data from it. Any help in doing that would be greatly appreciated.
I am now using Windows 7.

Firefox also makes regular backups of your bookmarks in a folder named bookmarkbackups in your personal settings folder. You can restore the backup to your new Firefox, but unlike importing the HTML-format file, it is a complete drop-in replacement, so if you have saved new bookmarks you do not want to lose, the export/import method may work better for you.
By default, Windows hides your personal settings folder so the easiest way to access it is from inside Firefox. You can use either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
    * type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This will launch a window showing your Firefox settings files.
You might want to back up this whole folder if you have other data you want to preserve from your XP computer.
