  • Creating new Disk Image in disk utilities for TC. How long should it take?

    I'm attempting to create a new disk image so that I can use my TC as storage in addition to back up. It's been "creating the image" since 6am today. It's 3:15pm now. ***? Is it supposed to take this long or is something wrong? I am attempting to create a large area of storage (500 GB). Could that be what is taking so long or should I hit cancel/give up...call Apple support?
    Please advise. Thanks!

    Hey Kristi,
    How much is the actual size of the data you're trying to rebuild? This would be directly related to the duration of the process. Also, if you are doing it wirelessly, it could take forever and a day. Last night I used an archive copy of a file to install an application and it took well in excess of 90 minutes. I don't know the exact time except that this morning I woke up to find it completed. So wireless is not always painless.
    Building is not the same as copy so that could be the reason for this. What would be interesting to know is whether you can check to see where it's writing wheter anything is being written.

  • Error message when I try to copy new files (images, documents) to mac from flash drive/SD card

    I am recieving an error message when I try to copy new files (images, documents) to mac from flash drive/SD card. The message is saying "operation cannot be completed because an item already exists with that name." They are brand new therefore not the same name? I cannot even put them in a brand new folder...  How can I fix this?
    Please help me!

    You don't need to recover the system.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
    Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
    dot_clean -m
    Switch to the Finder and drag the icon of the flash drive into the Terminal window. Some text will appear after what you entered. Press return.
    The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. Then quit Terminal and try the copy again.

  • New Disk Image - Says my iPhoto Library is locked?

    I am using OS X 10.9.1. I created a new disk image so that I can share an iPhoto library between two different users on the same Mac. When I try and open iPhoto having linked the new library it says that I cannot because either the library or the disk is locked or I do not have permissions. I have checked the sharing set up for both the new library and the drive but I can not find anything wrong. Any suggestions?

    directions are here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    However it generally is much more successful to use the external hard drive with ownership ignored option than the disk image option

  • Context Menu: Facebook Home (News Feed) Images Are Not Recognized

    You only see context menu items if they apply to the situation. If you right-click on an image, you will see items such as: View Image, Copy Image, Copy Image Location, Save Image As, etc. There is no exception for images which are a hyper-link. But in Facebook Home (News Feed), images of posts do not apply to the situation. Whereas images of Users' Profile Pictures (little images shown next to user's name in posts and in comments) DO apply.
    So if you right-click on an image of a post, you won't see items such as "Copy Image Location". You will have to click on that image, and in the next page (the full-page preview of the post) right-click on the image in order to copy its location or save it to local drive.
    Am I doing anything the wrong way, or is this a shortcoming of Firefox in features and options?

    Sorry, I had missed your reply.
    You can right click an element on a web page and open the built-in Inspector to see which element gets selected.<br />
    If you get the normal context menu there some other element gets selected.
    Current Firefox versions have a lot of built-in web developer tools including an Inspector and Style editor.

  • New JEPG image size (disk size) is too low?

    Hi,
    I am creating new JEPG image using JAI. But the resultant JEPG's size (disk size) is too less than the source image.
    How to create a new JEPG with the size equals to the source image?
    I guess some where in middle the compression is taking place. How to avoid it?
    Thnaks in advance.

    post some code ... with code tags
    as just reading a jpeg image using JAI and rewriting it back doesn't involve re-compression ... doing something wrong some place.
       File imageFile = new File(filename);
                    try {
                    Iterator readers = ImageIO.getImageReadersByFormatName("jpeg2000");
                    ImageReader imageReader = (ImageReader)readers.next();
                    ImageInputStream imageInputStream = ImageIO.createImageInputStream(imageFile);
                    imageReader.setInput(imageInputStream, true);
                    ImageReadParam imageReadParam = imageReader.getDefaultReadParam();
                    int imageIndex = 0;
                    Rectangle rectangle = new Rectangle(0, 0,(int)pan2.getWidth(), (int)pan2.getHeight());
                    //Rectangle rectangle = new Rectangle(0, 0,1000, 1000);
                    imageReadParam.setSourceRegion(rectangle);
                    image2 = imageReader.read(imageIndex, imageReadParam);this to read a image
    Iterator writers = ImageIO.getImageWritersByFormatName("jpg");
                             ImageWriter writer = (ImageWriter) writers.next();
                             Once an ImageWriter has been obtained, its destination must be set to an ImageOutputStream:
                             File f = new File(x+".jpg");
                                            try
                             ImageOutputStream ios = ImageIO.createImageOutputStream(f);
                             writer.setOutput(ios);
                                            writer.write(im[x]);
                             ios.close();and this to write the image back on the disk

  • Time Machine creates new disk image when backing up but files not visible

    When I back up my files (daily) to tan external drive TM creates a new disk image (named laptop) on my desktop (in addition to the image for the external drive named TIme Machine Backups). When I click on the new disk image while it's backing up I see a list of recent backups. However the disk image disappears after completing the back up and the files do not appear in the Star Wars screen - only old back-ups from 2009. How can I access the newest backups?

    alanol wrote:
    A disk image labeled Time Machine Backups resides permanently on the desktop
    Right-click it, and select +Get Info.+ See what the path is (after +Disk image+ near the top of the General section).
    Also the amounts for Capacity and Used.
    as a consequence of the repair a sparse bundle (Zero KB) folder was created.
    No. That may have been created by the new backup, though.
    Also a new "lost +found" folder was created containing several ".emix" files.
    Those are email files.
    Net, net - same basic problem, can't see the newest backups in the Star Wars screen.
    I suspect they're in the disk image.
    Do you have any external HDs connected?
    Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Trying to create backup of BOOTCAMP with New Disk Image

    Hi.
    I am trying to automate backing up my BOOTCAMP partition. I thought automator might do it. I have it done but I have 2 problems.
    1) It prompts me for my password before it starts. Other folders don't ask me, how can I stop automator asking me when it is making disk image from BOOTCAMP?
    2) I get an error message Error code 28. See below. I have run this twice and get the same error message, same place each time. What is the problem.
    Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
    !http://www.silverstoneschoolsparking.co.uk/grandprix/bootcamp%20automator%20err or.jpg!

    Thanks JGG.
    However, I see that development of Winclone has stopped which is a little concern.
    Also I do not see how to automate it. Is that possible?
    Can Winclone be added to Automator somehow, or back to the original question why is New Disk Image not happy creating an image of Bootcamp? I also tried selecting all the files/folders within Bootcamp instead of bootcamp itself, but that also fell over with same error message but at a different file.
    I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backing up Macintosh HD on a schedule, but I really want something which can back up Bootcamp on a schedule, or by using automator. How can this be achieved? Thanks

  • Disk Utility: new disk image takes forever- computer unresponsive-HELP!

    Hello,
    I'm using Disk Utility to create a "new disk image from folder." The folder is on one Lacie exernal usb drive, and the target location is another Lacie usb drive (150 GB free).
    The folder is 55GB. After 3+ hours, the activity window still shows "creating image" though the progress bar has changed from blue to pulsating blue/white stripes and I have the spinning beach ball of death.
    Computer is unresponsive and the only way to terminate is to press the pwr button until everything shuts off.
    Why is disk utility hanging like this? (or does it take more than 3 hours to create an image 55GB in size?
    I've had no issues with previously creating images, though these were all 15GB or smaller.

    USB takes forever....the reason I got a Firewire Ext. Drive.
    It's soooo much easier to make a clone doing the following.....
    I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
    You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
    I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
    With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on PPC Macs but are on some Intel Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on PPC Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • Shameless plug for my new digital imaging blog

    Hi everybody!
    This is nothing but a shameless plug for my new digital imaging blog @ http://www.imagingpro.wordpress.com.
    I'm looking for readers, in particular photographers, and you are probably looking for interesting information, so it is all good.
    I hope you find it worthwhile, as in not useless.
    Gotta go now before the moderator comes and spambins me :-)
    Mathias

    Com'on Larry, Mathias is a good guy and does wonderful work, and the blog looks good as well.
    There is of course the wars of who is better, them or us, but I think this is natural.
    And larry things are more expensive there then they are here, though when I am over in Europe I try to put the currency exchange out of mind and think in terms of Euros as being euros and dollars. Certain things there are actually more reasonable but not and certain cities are more reasonable priced as well.
    True they have larger incomes then us and pay no medical expenses if they choose but that is the balance of things and i think it is wonderful that they get a chance to save money and get a chance to see the U.S. and I guess i many cases New York.

  • News Search + Image Search

    This has been happening since last winter, October/November 2009.
    Whenever I conduct a new or image search, and click on the news items/images I want to open, firefox hangs and freezes, and the CPU explodes.
    I click on "News", click on the links I want to open, and firefox hangs and freezes.
    I click on "News", conduct a search, then click on the links I want to open, and firefox hangs and freezes.
    I click in "Images", conduct a search, click on either the image or the website link I want to open, firefox hangs and freezes.
    == Troubleshooting information ==
    Tried everything, and I'm over it. Completely sweeping the PC of firefox and re-installing from scratch, running firefox in safe mode, running firefox with no add-ons or bookmarks, running firefox in private mode, etc.
    Now it's come to the point that by just clicking in the News link, the CPU skyrockets, and that page is slow to load.
    I'm using Roadrunner, and it's definitely not my provider - I'm not having any problems with Google Chrome, Opera, Netscape, or Safari.

    I have the same problem since Firefox 3.6.3

  • Is it time for new iso image?

    As I remember ArchLinux goal was to make one iso for one kernel.
    So what happened?
    There is no new iso announced for quite long time.
    I know there is no big need for new iso's but if ArchLinux wants to be popular it has to hit news sometimes?

    silver wrote:the new  iso image will come out soon
    that seeming a real official like statement with a very concrete timeframe i just went ahead and did and ftp-install. Unlike other people stated I did not encouter any trouble whatsoever, I just hope that doing an ftp -install does not cause any fragmentation on my fileystemen, i.e. I have no clue where it puts and deletes the downloaded stuff from before install, i can imagine that this is less of a problem from the .iso.

  • Existing component with layout like new google images?

    I've been asked to create a tile list like the new google image search:
         even rows
         variable width contents so uneven columns
         grid is fixed width
         vertical scroll
    Is there an existing component that I can use (such as an S:List with some fancy parameters)?
    Any number of items
    Grid is fixed width
    Vertical can scroll
    XX X XXX X XX   <- different width items in each row means different numbers of items in each row.
    X XX XX XXX X
    XXX XXX X XXX

    Hi,
    We don't have such stock layout in the SDK, but writing a custom one and using it with List shouldn't be too hard.  I have an example of such a layout that maybe a good starting point. It's posted on my blog here http://evtimmy.com/2009/06/flowlayout-part-2-gap-verticalalign-and-scrolling/

  • Disk Utility doesn't finish creating new disk image - naming issue??

    Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard and carried along an empty disk image created in OS 10.4.11. I use these for archiving data on read-only DVDs and password protect the images.
    In the earlier OS, I found the practical limit for the dmg was 4.3 GB, containing 4.27+ GB of data (anything larger failed when attempting to burn data DVDs). Today, when I looked at my empty dmg file, the OS 10.6.6 Finder showed it to be larger both inside and outside (just under 4.7 GB inside I think - didn't write it down). I suspected that it may be corrupted or at least not give correct directory information, so I deleted this dmg as a precaution and tried to make a new one with the old size by selecting custom size within Disk Utility. Now every time I try to create a new dmg this it stalls at about 100 MB.
    The image format panel has several additional settings in OS 10.6 . There are two places for names - in the "Save as" field above and in the "Name" field below. (Haven't yet found any documentation where the reason for this is explained or which lists possible name limitations. The Help info appears to be identical to what was in 10.4) I've tried making both names the same, but it still stalls
    Disk Utility settings:
    Save as __Diskname
    Name in lower field __Diskname (have also left it blank no difference)
    Custom 4.3 GB
    Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    128 bit encryption
    single partition
    read/write format* (also tried CD/DVD master - no difference)
    * All files are not necessarily added at once so I'm pretty sure I want this to be read/write
    Message was edited by: James Kilgore
    In case this isn't obvious I mean read/write formatting on the hard drive, but when burned the format will remain the same whether or not the disk used is rewritable

    Hi Michael,
    Did you reformat it HFS+ or something else?
    Some USB2 Flash Drives Write at a disappointing USB1 speed, but Read at USB2 speeds.
    From what I can find, that isn't one of them and should take maybe an hour & a half to transfer 30 GB to it. Of course if write speed IS USB1, then you could expect 2 days or more.
    I'd stop it. Reformat it, then make the Image on the HD and try transferring it.
