  • My new MacBook Pro does not shut down

    Hello,
please help. I have a brand new computer - MacBook pro - 2.2 GHz, Intel Core i7, Mac OS X 10.6.7. When I bought it, I followed the onscreen instructions and "transferred" my old computer, 4 year old MacBook, onto the new one (my accounts, with all the documents, preferences, etc). Now, for some time, before getting my new computer, I had been experiencing problems on my old one: namely, it was not shutting down and I had to "force" it by pressing the switch. I should have known better than transferring the old comp's settings and accounts onto the new one. I didn't and now my new computer is also not shutting down. Does anyone know how to find where the problem is and how to eliminate it? Do I have to backup all, erase, and reinstall everything or is there a less drastic way to cure my afflicted computer?
    Thank you!
    P.

    Hi,
running the activity monitor and select System Processes, set the window to see allrunning processes and sort by CPU usage, close all applications that are using and try to shut down your Mac, then identifies what the process that consumes more CPU percentage.

  • The new Firefox 6.0 has shut down my AVG AV security feature

    August 16, 2011
The new Firefox 6.0 has shut down an important AVG anti-virus feature that I.D.'s safe websites. It's AVG's "Page Status" icon.

Firefox already provides similar features, see
    * [[site identity button]]
    *[[options window - Security panel]]
    * http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/phishing-protection/
I do not know for certain but I doubt Firefox's changes will affect the AVG security functions as far as AV (Anti Virus) functions are concerned, that should continue to work.

    enermax modu87+ 800w
    seagate sata2 1 tb hdd
    pioneer dvr-s19lbk dvd drive
    win7pro 64bit
as per topic, when I restart pc, it shuts down, waits 5 sec then powers on as normal. nothing appears to be wrong except this issue.
it used to work fine with another 2g memory stick(which wouldn't work at it's rated 1333 speed, but that's another story, and I highly suspect the memory stick in question is at fault).
oc genie is disabled of course.
all bios settings are at default, except following:
    boot order
ahci enabled for all sata connectors(hotswap disabled)
slight overclock with turboboost multiplier at 40 40 38 37
    memory set to 1866 2T 9 10 9 27 link, xmp disabled, dram voltage 1.536v.
I can pass a few hours of memtest86 at these settings, and except for restart issue, everything is fine.
I tried setting xmp on(with everything on auto). auto dram voltage was set to 1.632 in this case, which appears to be slightly excessive, and it didn't cure reboot problem anyway.
I tried apping dram voltage up to rated 1.65v with xmp off and manually set timings.
    I tried running at 1600mhz.
any idea what might cause shut down instead of reboot? any settings I should try?
might this be a bios problem? my mouse doesn't work with this bios, it used to work with 1d0 though.

    Try 'disable' of EuP 2013.
thank you! that cured it, and now it restarts as it should, no issues.
I also tried your settings, and it didn't work "out of the box", so I went to my old ones, and changed to 1T, that should be enough for me anyway. I could play with the settings a little I guess, but changing some of them and hitting save causes the same behavior shutdown-wait-restart, and I'm not sure which ones do that.
dram frequency and sata mode for one do that, as intel vt-x/vt-d settings, not sure about timings, sometimes it shutdowns, sometimes restarts.

How about restarting when the system is in stock settings?
sorry, didn't try that, even if that would work, there is no point for me.

  • Can't create new digital ID/certificate - Reader shutting down unexpectedly

I had Adobe Reader X (10.0.0) installed and when I went to Edit|Protection|Security Settings it would pop up a dialog then shut down immediately.
I upgraded to the latest X build (10.2.1 or something), and the same thing occured.
I turned off Protected Mode and now instead of just shutting down it showed an 'Adobe Reader has stopped working' dialog (I did save the crash dump file but then lost it unfortunately, however there was nothing obvious in it)
I then installed version XI (not sure why Update didn't tell me about this).
When I tried to start that, it shut down immediately.  I read here that this was a known problem of sorts, and ran the EULA program to allow it to at least start up.
Next I tried to find the equivalent "Security Settings" dialog in version XI in order to create a new Digital ID, and eventually found what looked like the right option under Edit|Preferences|Signatures|Identities & Trusted Certificates.
But when I click the "More" button...it just shuts down immediately.  The 'More' button for "Document Timestamping" causes the same thing, as does the 'More button' on the tab for Edit|Preferences|Security. I managed to get a screen shot and it's just the partly painted "Digital ID and Trusted Certificate Settings" shown before it disappears completely, with no other dialogs displayed or any options to capture the crash dump.  I attached a debugger to it and managed to get this stack trace:
    First-chance exception at 0x700b2a5a in AcroRd32.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x700de9f4.

  • New Macbook Pro will not shut down.

    Hi,
So I just got a new Macbook Pro four days ago from the Apple store and I'm already running into a little bit of trouble, that being my macbook will not shut down. Once I open the shut down window, the normal countdown that comes with it usually will not appear and I am incapable of clicking the shut down button. I have not downloaded anything onto my mac besides Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flashplayer, and a pdf document of my receipt from the apple store. I have burned some of my music CDs into itunes and browsed the web (nothing fishy; just some shopping, movie streaming from netflix and youtube, and reading articles online published by universities). Should I take the computer to the Apple store or is this something I can fix on my own?
    Thanks so much

If I were you I'd take it back to the Apple store and let someone at the Genius Bar take a look at it. The worst case is you made an extra trip, but at least this way you can exchange it immediately if there's a problem. You only have a 14 day window for this, might as well take advantage of it.
The only other thing I can suggest is to open the Force Quit option from the Apple icon in the upper left corner. See if there are any apps that show Not Responding. If there are any like that, force quit them then try to shut down.

Pages died today. Just downloaded the latest update 2 days ago. Last night shutting down my very new MacBook Pro Retina, Pages stopped shut down. Today Pages will not open, all my Pages docs cannot open. Help please! Anybody have a fix?

You probably have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 in your Applications folder, will open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08/'09 in your Applications/iWork folder which can not open Pages 5 files.
When you were shutting down you probably had an unsaved document open.
You probably are opening the wrong versions of Pages to open the wrong document format.
Pages 5 has had over 90+ features removed.
Most users are going back to Pages 09 whilst Apple sorts this out.

  • Have gray screen and unresponsive iBooks 2 program upon downloading Wilson textbook on life. No way to turn pages.  When using new York times app it shuts down and goes to home screens.

Loaded iBooks 2, downloaded e.o. Wilson textbook on life.  Opened book and only get gray screen without any way to turn pages.  As top menu does not appear cannot even switch to another book.  This occurred on 3rd time of trying to open book,   First two times would result in iPad switching back to home screen.  This last issue also happens when trying to open new york times app.

Shut down all programs that are running in the background.
    1. Double-click the Home button to see Apps in background
    2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minu sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close program
    4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo
Suggest you perform Step 1 to 3 at the end of every day.

  • Brand new MacBook Air fails to shut down

I took ownership of a brand new 13" MacBook Air on Friday 15th, have been trying it since then and found that on occasion it hangs during the shutdown process. This has happened five times in two days of use (it's now the 17th). The only way to get the MBA to shut down is to hit the start button for an extended period otherwise it will sit spinning for eternity. I have experimented and tried to shutdown programmes first before shutting down the MBA, but this doesn't appear to help.
I have only installed a few programmes on the MBA since receiving it, (Lightroom and 1Password), everything else is as it was when it was delivered, brand new. I purchased it via the online store and requested that it was upgraded with 8GB RAM and a 1.7GHz processor, so it came from China with these upgrades carried out.
Could this be a memory problem? I understand that MBs can be fussy about what type of memory is installed. It seems odd as the memory was installed in the factory.
Should I do a VRAM and/ or PROM reset? Are either of these responsible for controlling shut down procedures?
It is very disappointing as I had been really looking forward to getting the MBA and I am concerned that this might be an inherent fault with this particular machine. Any help would be appreciated. I will contact Apple Support as I have 90 days phone support, but I thought I should try you all first.
    Chris

RAM should not be a factor for a brand new Mac. Third party software is often the culprit.
Make sure to log out of 1Password before shutting down >  https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/5265/1password-cancels-logout
Tip ... there's no need for a third party password manager. The pre installed Keychain Access app can do that for you.

  • P67A-G43 (B3) shutting down

Per subject, I have been having problems with my system randomly shutting down.
I purchased everything but the GTX 470 new a couple weeks ago.
It will run from hours to several days, but the problem is always the same, it simply shuts down.
No BSOD in spite of setting windows so it should not automatically restart on error.
After this it will often cycle attempting to restart, I get one blue LED on the board, then all of them, at which point it restarts again.
I clear the CMOS per instructions found here and it will usually, finally run again, although I am running defaults in the BIOS.
I'm at the point now however where I cannot get it to run for more than a few minutes before shutting down.
Among what I have tried is installing Win7 64bit several times, checking memory, run with single stick, disabled the HDMI audio on the GTX 470, I've had several graphics card in the system.
I bought a high quality PSU, I have reseated everything, I'm at my wits end.
Should I try to set it up outside the case, should I RMA the board, or is there something I'm missing?
    I appreciate any suggestions.

Yes what you describe seems to be possible short circuit between case and MB somewhere or a wire from PSU pinched or insulation worn through somewhere. Test with MB on plain cardboard surface, no plastic or foam of any kind under MB.
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.
I decided to go ahead and set up the system on my dining room table, components are resting on plain cardboard boxes.
I have one stick of memory in the slot next to the CPU, the HDD, DVD, and GTX 470 are installed.
I hit the power switch (had one laying around) and the system started, I set the memory to 1333, 9/9/9/24, restarted again and loaded Windows.
I guess I'm kind of at a loss for where to go from here.
The restarts were so sporadic that I have no idea how long it might take for it to happen again, if it's going to happen at all.
If it's safe to leave running in this state I suppose I can just leave it on and wait and see, unless there is something I should be doing with regards to testing?
Again, thanks for the reply and any further insight you, or others may have.

  • My brand new MacBook pro won't shut down, the display screen is on and the pointer moves, but otherwise it's stuck!

I gave the command to shut down, but all that happened was the the dock cleared, leaving nothing but the wallpaper behind along with a moving pointer. I got it yesterday, so it's brand new. What could be the problem?

    Hi b,
Hold the power button down for 5-10 seconds and it will shut down. Wait a minute or so before starting up again.

  • P67A-GD65 random shut-down

    First thing's first, the specs:
    MB: P67A-GD65 (MS-7681)
    CPU: Intel Core i7-2600k
    RAM: DIMM1-3 Corsair dual-channel XMS memory 1.5V  CMX4GX3M2B1600C9
    DIMM2-4 Corsair dual-channel Vengeance memory 1.5V  CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9
    HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3  - HD103SJ
    BIOS version: 4.3
VGA: ASUS GTX 560Ti Direct CUII Top
    PSU: Xilence Redwing 750W (modular)
The issue is quite simple really:  At random times the computer shuts down without a warning - no error prompt or BSOD or anything else; and then it reboots. Scrolling often through videos and using google chrome browser in conjunction with videogames makes it more likely to shut down suddenly.
The hard-drive errorcheck came up with nothing and memory and CPU stress tests were all clear. My main suspect is the memory but the problem re-occurs at random times. Another issue is the fact that I can't set the memory in X.M.P. profile (the option is simply greyed out when all 4 X.M.P. capable sticks are in the MB.  It becomes available when only 2 slots are populated by either of the memory kits). If I link the timings and set the option to 1600Mhz manually then it resets to the 1333Mhz default on reboot.  Most overclocking options are blocked so I am using OC Genie II. I am not sure what options would work out best for this motherboard (energy-saving, intel turbo boost, enhanced boost etc.).
I need your help and advice.

  • New MacBook Pro won't shut down.

I recently got a new MacBook Pro running Yosemite.
Very often (4 times out of 5) when I want to shut it down it doesn't do anything and I can wait and wait the top bar is gone but the dock remains accessible and the mac does't shut down. Most of the time I have to force the shut down and I don't like doing so.
Again, when I want to shut it down, the background and the dock remain visible but the top bar disappears.
The weird thing is that, the dock says finder is still opened but when I click on the app, it won't open it at all and other applications can be opened.
Anybody has a solution to that?

  • Updating or installing new iTunes causes computer to shut down

I have tried several times to update my iTunes and get through to where it says it is validating install. It stops at about 70% and freezes there for 10 mins. or so and then my computer shuts down. I tried removing iTunes and QuickTime and downloading again but the same thing happened. All MS updates are installed.

It stops at about 70% and freezes there for 10 mins. or so and then my computer shuts down.
Are you getting any sort of blue screen when the PC shuts down? If so what text and alphanumeric codes is it showing? (eg 0x0000007E?)
If it is showing a specific file name too (for example, ati3duag.dll) let us know what that is called too. Precise spelling please.

  • Ever since I got the new update my iPad keeps shutting down apps mid use!

While using my iPad 2 programs and apps keep shutting down mid use this only started happening after I did the update.... Any suggestions?

Try closing all apps via the iPad's multitasking bar and then do a soft-reset and see if that improves things.
To close apps : double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag each app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
To do a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
