New build won't boot -- start/stop/start/stop....

I just finished putting together my new lga2011 system. When I went to power up, the fans start for .5 seconds and then they shut down, after about 3 seconds, the fans start again for about .5 seconds and then they shut down. I removed and then reseated the memory. I unplugged all the cables to the case, still the same result.
What am I doing wrong?

I would check:
-Is your heatsink/CPU fan sit properly , (thinking to overheating, cooling paste problems etc...)?
-Leave only one Ram stick and try to boot
-Is your MB, Processor and GC properly powered?
-Check for any short between the MB and the case.
(Remove the MB from the case and start it outside)
-Did you have any trouble installing the processor?
-Try to reset CMOS.
It's all what I see for now.

    I'm doing a rebuild of a system in which the old motherboard failed. This is only the second time I have done a build, so forgive any apparent ignorance. The following describes the system: Motherboard: MSI NF750-G55, CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 450, PSU: Hiper Type R MkII 880W, Case: Antec Three Hundred, Memory: Rendition by Crucial 1 X 4GB, Hard Drive: Seagate 400 GB, DVD: Samsung 22X SpeedPlus.     The problem I'm encountering with the new MSI NF750-G55 is booting to the DVD so I can load Windows Vista onto the hard drive. The POST gives me a Bad CHKSUM error and directs me to bios setup. In setup, the Boot Sequence shows my DVD and hard drives as disabled and won't let me enable either.
    I've uninstalled everything, cleared the CMOS and reinstalled everything five times. Nevertheless I am still getting the same error message and can't enable either  my DVD drive or hard drive. Therefore, I'm unable to successfully boot up and load windows onto the new hard drive.
    I'm out of ideas and ready to return the MOBO to Newegg for another, but I would rather fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can try next before I ask for an RMA?

    do not do this, just hit reset button then press F11 during BIOS post screen and boot from your optical drive.

  • MSI 990fxa-gd65 new build won't boot or post

    Hi, any help with this issue would be most appreciated
    I have just built a new system spec below:
    MSI 990fxa-gd65
    AMD FX8350
    2 x 4GB Hyper X fury DDR3 1866Mhz RAM
    MSI GTX960 Graphics card
    1TB WD HDD
    Corsair HX1000w (recovered from an older machine and in full working order)
    Unit powers ok, all fans are running, HD, Graphics card fans run and lights up DVD drive spins up OK too.
    Motherboard has two cpu phase lights lit. There is no post beeps or video out.
    I've tried it with a single stick of memory and a different lower spec video card but nothing seems to work. Some posts are suggesting the CPU may not be supported with the MoBo's current version of bios so questions are:
    How can I find out the bios version and if it is compatible as it doesn't reach the bios screen?
    If it needs updating how do you update it?

    I'm trying to swap out the hard drive on my wife's late-2008 Macbook with a new Western Digital hard drive (regular style, not a solid-state drive). Cloning the drive with Carbon Copy Cloner seems to have worked fine (including the hidden Recovery partition) as it can be booted from in an external USB case on startup. The problem starts when I switched out the old drive and placed the WD inside. All of a sudden the Macbook won't boot up and I get the flashing folder icon instead. Switching the drives back and everything's fine; I can again boot up from either drive by holding the option key on startup.
    I've read that some older Macbook Pros have an issue with SATA II data transfer rates and need to be slowed down from 3.0 Gbps to SATA speeds of 1.5. Unfortunately, it according to WD's site you can't do that with WD's 2.5" drives, only their 3.5"s. I've tried it anyways with a jumper and it doesn't seem to work for me.
    I've also read elsewhere that there is a limit to the size of the drive that can be placed in: 500 GB. The drive I bought is 750 GB, so if this is true, that could be what the problem is. However, I can't find any mention of this supposed limitation anywhere on Apple's site. Does anyone have a reputable source for if this is true for this model of Macbook?

    Hi Dave, I am having the same issues with a WD Blue. Thanks for your suggestions, but doesn't work for me.
    When the WD is in the MBP (15" 2010 Unibody), and I boot from an external HD, firstly the MPD says it can't recognise the WD and offers me the choice to Initialise, ignore or eject. I select initialise and disk utility reports that there is only a FAT partition of 58.2 GB on the WD. Err?
    When I put the original HD (an ST950032 500GB) back in the MBP and boot off it, all is fine. I then put the WD in an external exclosure, and the MBP sees it fine and Disk Utility correctly reports a MacOS Journalled GUID partition of 465.8GB.
    All the data is there (from doing an earlier clone). I just can't boot off it - weird.
    Surely there is a fix for this? Have tried all the SMC / PRAM reset stuff.
    The box even says that the WD Blue is 'Suitable for all operating systems (except XP) out of the box". How can you be sure that a drive you but will work in a MBP before you spend your money?

  • New machine won't boot

    I've had this new machine up for about a week and a half, and all of a sudden it started hanging (freezing) on me tonight.  Other than the drivers, utilities, etc. that came w/ the various hardware, I haven't installed much software: Office 2007, Firefox, AIM, and one game (TimeShift).  Everything was working great until tonight.  Except I had noticed that when I left the machine for a while and it went to sleep, when I tried to wake it up by moving the mouse, the screen would come up w/ my background and nothing else.  I would have to reboot to get it going again.  Tonight it all escalated.  It first hung when I was using Firefox.  Next time it was after I saw a brief message about an 'access error' on the raid mirror.  I then went into the nVidia Control panel, and it froze again.   No response from the keyboard or mouse at all.  Sometimes, the mouse pointer would disappear completely, and w/ still no response from the keyboard I'd have to reboot.  The last time windows was up, I tried to see if the game would start - it froze again.  After I pressed the reset button that time, it has not booted again.
    I'm using the software raid (Raid 1 mirror), and it says the mirror is "healthy".  I can get into the Raid Setup and everything looks fine.  But when I get past the post, right when you're supposed to see the Windows moving bar, I hear a faint 'click', and then nothing - black screen.  I can also get to the BIOS just fine, and nothing appears to have changed.  It's possible that one of the hard drives is bad, but after all the trouble I had trying to get Raid to work on this board (cold boot issue, etc.), I also think that the board may be suspect.  I guess I will try disconnecting one of the drives, and see if it will boot off of one or the other.  But I would sure appreciate any other suggestions too!

    No, the mirroring means you have a safe copy of your data, you will still need 2 disks........

  • New X2270 won't boot OpenSolaris 2009-06 from internal disk

    Is anyone having any problems with recent X2270 servers? I took delivery of two of these last week. They are without the ILOM card because Sun are having quality issues with them - a firmware bug I believe. They are fun to install as my only eyes is via a serial port that seems to have some kind of bios video text to serial ascii emulation which has quite a delay on it.
    Basically after installing Solaris it won't boot from the internal disk. So far I've tried net installs of SXCE b105 and also the latest OpenSolaris 2009-06 and in both cases the install completes correctly without any errors (that I've detected) but after rebooting they fail to load the kernel. Here is what's left on my serial console:
    Press F2 to run Setup (CTRL+E on Remote Keyboard)
    Press F12 if you want to boot from the network (CTRL+N on Remote Keyboard)At this point the hard drive activity light flashes twice and then the machine appears frozen. The Solaris banner is never shown. I've left it like this for hours just be sure.
    I've chosen ZFS for the whole disk in both instances. I wonder if this has something to do with it.
    Presumably OpenSolaris has the drivers for the disk interface cards otherwise it wouldn't have been able to install onto the disks.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    The solution for my problem was reinstalling linux-firmware & linux. Maybe this can help you too.
    I have booted from a live cd and doing these steps:
    RAID Array scan
    mdadm --examine --scan > /etc/mdadm.conf
    RAID Array start
    mdadm --assemble /dev/md1
    mdadm --assemble /dev/md2
    mdadm --assemble /dev/md3
    mdadm --assemble /dev/md4
    LVM scan & aktivieren
    vgscan
    vgchange -a y
    Mounten von „root“ & „boot“
    mount /dev/mapper/root-root /mnt/root/
    mount /dev/md1 /mnt/root/boot/
    In „chroot“ wechseln
    cd /mnt/root/
    „dev“, „proc“, „sys“ einbinden
    mount -t proc proc proc/
    mount -t sysfs sys sys/
    mount -o bind /dev/ dev/
    Nun / ändern
    chroot ./
    Reinstalling packages with
    pacman -S linux-firmware linux

  • HP PRO 3400 Series desktop won't boot CPU fan starts and stops , no video, no beeps

    I have the above computer with an i3-2125 CPU, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and a 300GB Seagate Hard drive.  I've had it for about 2 years and been working fine. It started acting up about 2 months ago.  It would lose the date and time.  I checked the battery, and it was OK, so I kept using the computer.  Then on 9/15/2014 it hung on "Starting Windows", I did the following:
    1.  Ran the built in HP diagnostic on hard drive and memory and they both passed.
    2.  Tried to go to last known good configuration and nothing happened.
    3.  Noticed the date and time were off, replaced the battery, nothing changed.
    4.  Tried another hard drive from another HP PRO 3400 Series and it would boot up but could not set date in bios.
    5.  Tried all kinds of things but could not set date in bios.
          a.  Bios date read 48/00/0048 after removing and replacing battery.
          b,  Tried to reset date to 9/16/2914 and it gets 56/00/0051
    6.  Then it wouldn't boot at all.   So now when you turn on the power, the CPU fan starts and runs for about 1 second, then shuts off for 4 seconds, then starts and runs for another 1 sec and it does this continuously.  There is  no video and no beeps and no difference when all memory is removed.
    7.  I removed the power supply, and checked voltages.  It appears to be OK.
    8.  I removed the motherboard, and inspected it- saw nothing obvious.
    9.  I connected the power supply to the motherboard with nothing else connected to the motherboard, and I get the same thing.  CPU fan starts then stops continuously, no video no beeps.
    10.  I am thinking it is the Motherboard, but I sure could use some suggestions as to what to do next.

  • 790FX-GD new build won't start

    Hi,  I'm an enduser and trying to build my own PC.  I bought the following:
       MSI 790FX-GD70 SocketAM3 motherboard
       AMD Phenom II X4 955 AM3 CPU
       Corsair XMS3 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) memory kit
       nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX
       Rosewill ATX 12V Power Supply (RD600N)
    When I turn on the power supply, the CPU fan turns on, the NB Phase LED is on, the CPU LED 1 is on,
    the Memory Phase LED's (2 of them) are on, the System Phase LED's (2 of them) are on, and the
    Debug LED is reading FF .  But after 10 minutes nothing changes    I did press the RESET button but
    did not seem to help.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.    Thanks
    Amended:  I found my newbie error. My fault,  I failed to connect the ATX 12V Power Connector !

  • Windows XP won't boot-up, keeps starting over

    HP Pavilion a1320y desktop. (No Windows disk provided - recovery/Windows partition on D
    Windows XP.
    No changes made before problem started.
    Windows will not get past the first Windows loading screen, and it goes into an endless loop of restarting.  Will not boot into safe mode.  Hardware check from Recovery Tools CD said no problems.  Norton boot-up scan said no problems with any malware.
    There are not adequate instructions on using Microsoft Recovery Console from either Microsoft or HP.  On starting the Recovery console from the HP Recovery Tools CD, I must choose between starting in C:\MiniNT or C:\I386.  There are no instructions anywhere (Microsoft, HP, web) on which of these two to use.  Which is the right one?  Applying the fixboot and fixmbr commands under C:\MiniNT did nothing for the problem.
    I am not going to use the PC Recovery options because I would lose all my data and installed programs.
    The HP tech support techs did not even seem to know what the Microsoft Recovery Console is, even though it is on the HP Recovery Tools CD, and were completely unable/unwilling to give any help.  Truly pathetic.
    What can I do?

    Howdy. Don't know if You have resolved this yet. I had a boot loop awhile back with Windows XP home. I found that it was an ntldr (new technology loader) file that was corrupted. Even the Windows CD I used had been corrupted. I Opted to pull the hard drive and put it in an external hard drive case. I lost none of my data and use this as it is, connected with a USB cord.  I upgraded to another computer. If it's the computer you want to revive, get another internal hard drive, format it and reload windows on the new one. If, however, you have no recovery disks or cannot re-install the operating system, I would opt for another unit or;;  there are resources online that have legal copies of original windows disks you can buy cheap to do this. I don't have a better answer. I have been through several fatal crashes and the solution I found most effective is to get another unit, pull the old hard drive and use it as an external USB drive. I lose no data, though I have a hefty collection of hard drives from old machines. Sometimes you just can't revive a unit, as it may be one chip of a thousand on the motherboard. You might spend more $$ and time than it's worth. I had to learn that the hard way with my first XP in 1985.
    It was much cheaper to replace the motherboard than to diagnose the problem. Thanks

  • MBP won't boot. When starting there's weird video artifacts, but it never makes it past the apple logo.

    My MBP is an early 2011. At boot the screen is full of a strange video artifacts and never usually makes it past the boot screen. I tried this in windows with the same result. I've reset SMC, PRAM, uninstalled and reinstalled my ram, etc with no luck. I had this problem before and luckily was able to make it to the recovery menu to reinstall OSX and they did the trick. But this time I can't even get that far..... Check out the pic below. It's kind of crappy but you can see the artifacts if you look at the apple logo closely.

    That clearly indicates that your computer's GPU is damaged, and you are not the only one.
    If you have got a 15-inch MacBook Pro, Apple has started recently a free replacement program for all MacBooks Pro affected by defective GPUs like yours. You only have to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get it fixed for free. If you want to know more about the replacement program, have a look at the Apple site -> https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
    However, if you have got a 13-inch MacBook Pro, there is no replacement program, so you will have to pay for the repair.

  • Won't boot past grey start up screen.

    All of a sudden my Itunes quit and wouldn't reopen so I thought a restart would be the fix. It turned back on but then got stuck on the grey loading screen. I tried all the hold down button combos and nothing worked. I am out of warranty and am a poor college student. Any advice? Please help.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
    You'll need the original OS X discs that came with your system. Insert the first one, and boot holding the C key down, which will boot from the OS X disc. From the menu bar, choose disk utility and repair permissions and repair disk. Any messages on repair disk? If it concludes successfully, reboot. Working now?
    If not, you should run the Apple hardware test. Insert the OS X disc that has 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose Apple hardware test, click the arrow pointing to the right, and follow directions. If prompted, choose the extended test. Does this give you any messages? Note, if you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do the same testing.
    Post back the results and we can help further from there.

  • New Air won't boot after failed Migration

    New MacBook Air arrived this afternoon.
    First thing I did was run Software Update to apply the lates OS patches.
    Second thing I did was run Migration Assistant to transfer data from a Time Machine backup on an external USB disk. The old computer was small. Backup is only about 25GB. It is from a MacBook running Snow Leopard.
    After about half an hour of running, Migration Assistant reached the "less than a minute remaining" stage and hung there for more than an hour. Finally I quit it. My computer then became unresponsive. I had to hold down the power key and restart.
    Computer won't restart. Bong is heard, Apple appears, spinner appears, no progress after that. Unplugged the external disk, rebooted, same thing.
    I rebooted to the recovery partition and ran Disk Utility, did the integrity check and the permission repair on the main volume, no improvement.
    Finally I gave up and started the Reinstall Lion option. I'd read about this, figured it was something I might need someday, never imagined I'd be running it within hours of getting the computer. Display says I have 5 hours and 45 minutes to wait.
    What went wrong here? What should I do when it is done reinstalling? I'd like to have my old stuff back, but I don't want to kill my computer again.

  • Migration Assistant crashed new iMac, won't boot

    I bought a new i3 iMac and skipped the migration assistant initially. Things were going fantastic, I imported and built a new iTunes library, iPhoto library etc.
    It is running 10.6.6.
    Then last night I decided to use Migration Assistant to move things from old Intel MacBook (running 10.5.8). As the migration was going to be something like 20-30 GiG's, I unchecked everything except Applications, and a few select folders from each user account (Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Movies). Since one account had the same name as the account on my new iMac, I asked Migration Assistant to rename the old account. I then went to sleep.
    When I woke up, iMac screen was black and would not wake up from sleep. Old MacBook tells me that the connection was dropped.
    I had to depress power button to force shutoff. Upon restart, at the apple boot logo, all I get is a message saying the computer has to be restarted, which appears in multiple languages. There seems to be nothing I can do to get it to boot.
    Help?

    That's likely a complication. You'll now have an extra user account with that stuff in it, and the account(s) you transfer won't have permission to it.

    That's a *kernel panic.*
    They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
    Try running this: [Apple Hardware Test: iMac (Mid 2007) and later models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883]. Run the Extended tests.

    If that doesn't help, start with this Apple article: [If “You need to restart your computer” appears|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html].
    Once you get it started, check the transferred user accounts; most likely, the transfer was incomplete, and you'll have to delete the partial accounts and run the Migration again.
    If your Apps were only partially transferred, just select them again -- Migration Assistant will just skip any that already exist on the new Mac. The only problem you might have is if it was in the middle of transferring an app when it failed; in that case you may have a partial copy of the app.

  • New L440 won't boot after weird video problem

    My new Thinkpad L440 just stopped working at the worst imaginable time. I hope someone here will be able to help, though I suspect it may be irretrievably broken in some stupid fluke. Let me give you the details: Maybe five hours before this happened, I removed the battery since I don't lug my laptop around much anyway and wanted to preserve it. I used to do this with my Macbook too, and everything seemed fine, until I started watching this video while downloading some totally legal material in the background using a file-sharing application. The screen would go black, and the computer would be completely irresponsive until I started closing the lid, at which point it would resume functioning. When this first happened, I was able to log on and start working again; it happened again, and I fixed it in the same way. Maybe ten minutes later, the screen went black again and I could not get it to respond no matter what angle I bent the lid. I tried shutting it and opening it again, to no avail. I removed the power connection and reconnected it, to no avail except for the fact that there were two short flashes of the green light at the center of the power button. I re-inserted the battery and nothing changed. So what on earth do I do? I can't believe this is happening right now -- I have so many deadlines!
    In any event, it's a Thinkpad L440 bought maybe ten days ago. 64-bit Windows 8.1 (it came with Windows 7, but I installed 8.1 from the DVDs that came with it).
    My educated guess would be that it's either my bad luck (and possibly some overheating issue, though I certainly don't think what I was doing was outside of what you could expect a brand new laptop to cope with), or that removing the battery led some internal backup battery to discharge and now it won't start again until it has been recharged.
    Grateful for any suggestions.
