New builds - problems solved?

I had to ask for a refund for my MBP after I got a bad replacement two weeks ago. Unfortuantely I needed a Mac notebook for an assignment and couldn't wait another 10 days for yet another replacement. I then bought a MacBook from a local dealer. That one is flawless so far (knock on wood) but the small screen is turning out to be a problem for me - I do lots of photo editing on the road without access to a larger screen.
My question now is: have the main issues been fixed now? I don't really mind the whine too much, I'm rather talking about the more serious issues like random shutdowns and superdrive problems.
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yeah, I think so...
I have a week 22 is mine's nearly perfect...
I've heard that people are getting week 23s and 24s that are flawless.
If you buy them online, apparently they're better because you get newer ones.

  • New Build Problem

A couple of weeks ago I got around to building a new rig with a 990X, Gigabyte Geurilla mo-board (the gamers sure are driving the desktop industry!), 24Gbs of GSkill Ram, 1k Watt PS, & a GTX-580. The other components don't matter at this point, because right now, when I power up the computer it runs for 2 secs. shuts down for 2 secs. fires back up for 2 secs, etc. I have swapped out power supplies, Ram, video cards, re-seated the CPU, and jumper-reset the BIOS. Clearly the problem lies within the moboard or CPU, but I'm open to any last ditch efforts before bringing on a 3rd party to get this thing running. I don't want to order a replacement CPU w/o knowing that that is, indeed the culprit. Most of the components were brand new from New Egg, except for the video card and PS, both of which came from an operational machine (and both were swapped out anyway to rule them out as the cause). So, the reason I'm posting this is because once before I had this same problem with my general purpose computer, that had been in operation for a couple of years and I posted this problem and Colin, from Brougham Media, suggested replacing the battery on the moboard. I was very skeptical, but it was the least expensive option for trying to diagnose the problem and just like all of his other solutions, it worked! Didn't work this time around, being that the moboard is brand new.
So, would you recommend shipping back the moboard to Gigabyte for repair or would it be safe to order a replacement from New Egg, hoping that that's the most likely culprit and send the board I have now back to New Egg as defective? I'm hoping there's something you can suggest I try before going to either of those lengths.

Problem solved. I called a local computer repair store, Intrex Computers, and described the problem. Told the guy all the steps I'd taken to diagnose. His response was, "Sounds like you have a short underneath the motherboard." I told him I had indeed gone from one Gigabyte model motherboard to another and needed to add some standoffs, but I was quite sure I didn't need to move any of the existing ones. When I asked him about the possibility of a bad motherboard he said that's extremely rare, so I decided to pull the moboard to see if I was dense enough to leave an old standoff. So I pull the board and sure enough found 10 standoffs where they were supposed to be. "Sure glad I'm not that dumb" I thought, though admittedly I was so anxious to put this time-consuming problem behind me, I was willing to embrace ignorance, which I've been forced to do thousands of times before if it meant finding the problem. So I go to put the motherboard back in and low and behold there's an errant screw, which was wedged in a corner near the motherboard, but not under it. Sooooo, let's just say that I didn't even catch that screw when I pulled the moboard the first time to reseat the CPU. But there's nothing else to explain the problem. The Intrex tech said it sounded like a short, and I found a loose screw (no snide comments, please. I've already thought of them!). Wow, when I was young, I was thrilled when my mother told me that I had IQ. I now have come to realize that she never said how much. Or in my case, how little!

If it stucks on that one , doesn't that mean that it's the next one in the process that fails ?
Funny u should mention that, I was thinking about that a while back, particularly when setting up stickies. Saw nothing to support my logic & so went back to simlpler things like the meaning of life.
    My Thoughts ended up as:-
    1) but on the basis the system, on failing the stage, will be in various degrees of instability, it can't reliably be expected to feed back. Therefore 2)
    2) Logically the system presets LED state for the next stage on completion of the previous stage. If the next stage fails the Led bracket is correct about the failing stage.

  • P35 Neo2-FIR New Build Problems

    Hi there,
Just finished new build (specs below), but get the full row of red LEDs on power up. Cycles through this endlessly. Cleared CMOS to no effect.
No idea what BIOS I have as system has never been on.
    Any ideas?

The lights are not the final word as I have gotten that indication when my video card was not properly seated on an other board even tho it was supposed to mean processor failure for that board too.  Maybe the vendor of the board can lend you an other cpu to flash bios.  An other alternative would be to RMA for reflash if possible once you are sure it's the processor and the bios.
Presumably Balloonshark has the same processor.  Good luck to both of you.  Let us know how it works out.

  • TS4611 Guys if you have these build: 12E3200 and your wifi is dropping, is not the your mid 2013 macbook air, is your router, I solve it by setting up my time capsule as a new network problem solved

Here is what I have been doing:
I got my new macbook air 11" two weeks ago, and have been haven problems with wifi connection dropping, I'm using verizon fioz at home, and their router
I also have a time capsule not set up as a network just join it to my current one.
After looking online all these days, I though, maybe is the verizon device that is updated..
I then reset the time capsule, created a new network
connected my system to the time capsule network, and there it is
    DONE, everything works now.
So if you are haven the same problem,, that is the fix
    hope that helps.
Oh  before I did these I try everything, the wifi update from apple don't work it keeps dropping it
I try everything, so don't and delete the system as some people have done, I read somewhere.
try my fix hopes that works.

I have seen lots of issues on Yosemite with Wifi (and have been having issues myself), but yours seem different. It is a pretty new computer, have you tried taking it in under Applecare (if you live somewhere this is convenient)? Maybe you just got a defective wifi card.  I won't defend Apple over this wifi mess, because it really is terrible, but your issue seems not the same as the ones I've read about while researching how to fix mine (unsucessfully....).

  • New Build, problems with H61M-P32/W8

I am putting together a small micro atx build consisting of the following.
    MSI H61M-P32 motherboard
    Intel G2030 3 ghz cpu
    2 gb of DDR3 ram
    EVGA GTX 650
    80 gb hard drve
    lg cd/dvd drive
    PCI-E to usb 2.0 card
Here is my issues, when i hook up just the mobo with the video card the computer will turn on and run fine till its gets to the point where it doesnt detect a hdd and cant move forward. However when i plug power into anything else (hdd, cd drive, pci-e card) the computer wont turn on or boot, the fans just spin for a sec then stop. I know its not a sata problem as it does this with or without sata cables attached to the drives. Its simply when i apply power to the drives it does this.
I ruled out it being a  power supply issue as i tried 3 different power supplies, a 385 watt, a 430 watt, and finally an 850 watt.
Any ideas before i call msi to RMA the board?
Im banging my head against a wall trying to figure this out.

Did you try clear CMOS and boot with only one RAM stick?
Do you have other HDD to try?

If you didn't attach the power cable to the sata HDD, it won't have function even you connect the sata cable.

  • New build problems

This is  my first build, I have been and bought all the parts, I think it would have been wiser to take advice first!
    K7N2 mobo
    Athlon XP2400
    512 DDR PC3200
    Gigabyte Radeon 9200
    Maxtor Plus9 SATA 120GB
    Pioneer DVD120S
    Windows XP Home Upgrade
Antec Sonata Mini Tower with 380 watt PSU
All assembled and checked. On firing up neither the dvd drive or hard drive are recognised by the BIOS.
I have installed drives before, so I don't think its anything obvious?
    Help please Sebastian

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. After a nights sleep, rechecked conections and discovered I hadn't quite pushed home the Ide ribbon connecter for the DVD into the mobo!
    So the continuing saga....
Started to Install Win XP Home..
Installed Promise376 Serial ATA Driver floppy from F6 prompt.
    It installed the fasttx2K driver
When setup asked for Win 98 CD it then came up with the following:
    Partitioning disk
    0 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on fasttx2K
The problem caused by the following file: setupdd.sys
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    setupdd.sys - Address F84C5F3E base at F84A1000, Date stamp 3d6dd67f
I used the Maxtor Powermax v4.06 to check for the hard disk and it couldn't find it.
Rechecked the settings and connections. Serial ATA cable attached to primary SATA conector. power supply plugged in and hard disk buzzing. No jumpers installed.
I havent set up the array settings  at start of bootup as I only have one hard disk.

Yes they share most drivers, but certainly not the bios. And you need a bios update for nahimic. I think that you might have to live without audio software unless MSI specifically brings out updates for your laptop.

  • New build, same problems

Having moved into a new build in the Newport area ~4 weeks ago, and ordering our package with BT a week prior to that we are still awaiting an engineer visit to flick a switch. The 'engineer' was booked to turn up on the 8th so i took the day off to enable the visit. low and behold no one showed up and we had to chase BT to find out what had happened. Numerous phone calls have got us no where to date and it appears that Openreach are refusing to investigate. The service received so far from all parties has frankly been appalling and I cannot think of an example in the recent past which has left me feeling so frustrated and helpless. What can BT do about this and what is a 'normal' install time from placing the order? Surely this can't be expected.

  • Problem with MSI 975x Platinum based new build

I am having what looks like a familiar issue with setting up a new build PC. Spec is as follows:
    MSI 975x Platinum edition MOBO
Intel Core Duo 2 e6600 CPU
    Western Digital Raptor 150GB S150 16mb 10000rpm SATA drive
    Corsair Memory TWIN2X2048-6400 2x1GB 240-Pin DIMM XMS2-6400 CL5
    SONY DVD-RW
The problem comes when trying to install Windows XP on the single SATA drive (I don't want a RAID array - mainly as I only have 1 hard drive!).
I press F6 as instructed to install the SATA drive - I have created a disk with the necessary driver files from the MSI website.
Based on other posts I have seen I have put all the files except "txtsetup.oem" in another folder on the floppy (either "\win_XP" or "\winXP"). However I still get the same error message:
"file \x32\jraid.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2108 in d:\xpspl\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c"
I am beginning to think I can't install XP to a SATA drive.  Can anyone help with this? Is there an "official" driver floppy disk I can get from MSI in exactly the right format?
Alternatively is it worthwhile buying a small standard IDE drive and installing XP to that to get me going and then install the SATA drive once XP is going? Would it then be possible to shift XP onto the faster SATA drive?
    Thanks

if you using 1 sata drive you dont set it up as a raid , in the sata options set it up as ide enhanced also in this mode no need for pressing f6 just make sure that the sata is set to 1st boot hdd , if you using 1 sata and 1 ide hdd and tring to isntall on the sata disconnect the ide hdd because it will mess with your drive letters in windows ... if you goin raid ( achi mode is only for sata 2 drives with NCQ = native command queing and your drives have to support this mode ) then in the sata drives portion set it to raid ( achi if your drives support it )  in the force part set it to force gen 1 ( for sata 1 drives ) force gen 2 ( for sata 2 drives ) then you will need to set up the raid config in the intel raid config ( its the next post screen telling you press CTRL+I ) set it up reboot reneter bios set hdd priority to intel raid 0 then intsall windows but press f6 ... yes i ran it 2 ways single sata drive and now raided 80's in raid 0 ( i dont have NCQ support yet )

  • [SOLVED]New Build, no sound, Alsa unable to open slave

I've been happily using Arch on an old laptop I had lying around for 4/5  months, alongside ARM on my Raspberry Pi for a year or so. Being more than happy with it I decided to sell my 2011 i5 iMac, build a pc and hopefully learn something along the way. I mention this as it's my first build and the issue may be hardware realted, or more likely my assembly of the hardware, I've updated my sig to reflect the new parts.
The first decision I made two days ago upon putting the system together. I had two plugs, one for HD audio, another for Realtek audio, I went with the HD option. The other variable that is new to me is an audio option in the Gigabyte uefi/bios for audio which has options for enabled, disabled & auto - I've tried all three. I thought at first going with HD option may have meant sound only via hdmi, I'm using an old vga monitor, but after a little reading it seems the HD option should work with the standard audio out's on the motherboard & case too.
I've got a 3.5mm jack plugged into the line out on the back of the motherboard going to a phono connection on my stereo, I've also tried the headphone out on the front of the case, Zalman Z9.
    I've installed alsa-plugins and alsa-utils. Upon running speaker-test, or speaker-test -c 2 I'm getting:
    speaker-test -c 2
    speaker-test 1.0.27.2
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels

The above is all without any .asoundrc in my home directory or anything in /etc.modprobe.d/*.conf
From the wiki I've tried putting
    options snd slots=snd_mia,snd_hda_intel
    options snd_mia index=0
    options snd_hda_intel index=1
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, and tried reversing the 1 and 0, both 0's, both 1's to no avail.
I've tried a few variations in .asoundrc based on the wiki example with no luck.
I'm lost, this is the first time I've had sound issues with linux and I'm really not sure if it's rooted in the hardware, my first attempt at building a pc or a simple alsa config issue.
Googling for unable to open slave in alsa seems to bring up mainly conflicting programm issues whic I don't think is my issue as I have no sound at all.
    *edit*
perhaps this should be in newbie corner? my linux sound knowledge is definitely newbie status.

Solved, not sure where I was going wrong in my initial attempts but a simple .asoundrc has my speakers singing. Could have sworn this was tried to death in the first half hour or so, oh well.
On the plus side I spent my lunch hour today getting a rough idea of sound on linux and alsa preparing for a fight with my new build, ten minutes after booting up the new machine on my return home & all is well.

I an one of many who were frustrated at the loss of visible keywords in iPhoto in Lion.  Will the new Mountain Lion solve this problem?

I'm not sure whether we are quite talking about the same thing?
With iPhoto in OSX 10.4.11 all the keywords were visible in the iPhoto library.  When I moved my photos to a computer with Lion I lost this feature, there was a lot of discussion at the time about this being a backward step by Apple.  So I wondered whether the Mountain Lion version of iPhoto has restored this feature?

  • Power on-off-on Problems with New Build Z68A-GD65(G3)

I'm hoping someone has seen these issues and can help me, although I realize this is a vague issue. I'm working on a new build. On power up everything looks good but then I get a power off and back on (like a reset). Sometimes it happens very quickly; other times it will stay on for roughly 5-10 minutes before the reset. I've checked all the connectors, case wires look ok, BIOS info looks correct.
The other issue is that when I tried to do the Win 7 install, it loads the files, goes to the "Starting Windows" screen, and freezes there (until the next power off problem shuts things down).
Any ideas on what to try to narrow things down?  Seems like it almost has to be the power supply or motherboard?

You have more than a Z68A-GD65(G3), please list he rest of your components. See my signature below for example of what to list.

I've disconnected everything but the mouse, keyboard and monitor and still have the power resets.
Tried one memory module at a time... still fails.
Played with lower memory freq settings... still fails.
Finally pulled the MB out, bench tested it to rule out shorting in the case; tried it with and without other peripherals... still fails.
I think I'll RMA the MB, although I suppose it could be the psu (unlikely, I'd think).
I had two bad motherboards in my last build. I had hope that MSI would be better...

  • New Build Phone Line Problems

I've been converting an old farm building over the last nine months.
In September last year I contacted OpenReach to start the ball rolling on getting a phone line and broadband set up.
I sent in all the forms, site maps and co ordinates of the nearest telegraph pole, they in turn sent in all the ducting for us to prepare the site for their arrival nearer the time.
I gave BT notice that we were moving out of our old home at the beginning of May and told them to make arrangements to process the line for the property we had converted. All this was confirmed as to be done on 1st June.
I received a phone call the week before from the bt engineers to say that they had the job down for 1st June and wanted to know which telegraph pole the line would be taken from, I confirmed all this with them and waited for 1st
    June.
We dug the trenches , placed all the ducting and generally prepared the site.
The day arrived - the automated system said that they were booked in for the 8am to 1pm slot - as the morning progressed I waited and periodically checked the line - still due to come for 1pm.
At 1.15pm I tried and eventually succeeded to speak with someone who could tell me straightaway that nothing was going to happen.
I'm ashamed to say ,I went ballistic. We were counting on the line to be installed so that we could complete all the yard work the following week to fill in the trenches and complete the build.
The chap on the end of the line then told me that I'd not have an update until Weds 6th June, due to the Bank holiday weekend.
Weds came , nothing. Thursday came, nothing. In fact I heard nothing until Monday 11th June - already 10 days over when our phone line should have been installed - and that was because I phoned to find out what the hell was happening.
Holding on the phone for 20 mins whilst the lady went to great pains to sort things out - turns out that the order just hadn't been processed and was never going to get done for the 1st June.
So , with this in mind , when do you think BT would hurry around to install a job that they should have done at the start of June -  the 29th June.
Totally disgusted -  I've been let down badly by a company that I've put all my phone and internet requirements through since I've been a homeowner. And whatsmore they couldn't give a toss.
My response was that this was their problem and that they needed to resolve it immediately - "it's the soonest we can do" At the risk of sounding like a self important oaf -  I went on to suggest seeing as I'd been let down so badly that surely getting a phone line installed in our home was a priority over others.
    It is not.

  • New Build / New Phone line Problems (Home Move)

    Hello Forum
    First post.
Been trying to arrange a home move for 2/3 weeks now (New Build).  Was told to get the address registered with Royal Mail. Have done this. Address still not appearing with BT. Get told on the phone someone will ring me back from offline team within 24 / 48 hrs but they never do.
Anybody have any experience than this? Any help to get this sorted much appreciated.
    regards
    Chris
