New camcorder- final check before buying

An earlier thread helped me to decide which model to choose. I have settled on a Sony DCR-HC94E. ("E" is for "European".) It is said that FCE is picky about what cameras it will recognise. Therefore, the following are those parts of its spec. which I have detected from this forum as being important to satisfy FCE, and a few other features which suit my requirements. If anyone notices anything inadvisable, please shout. Thanks. Please note that I am not a professional and have not gone for a three-chip machine nor HD, on cost grounds.
Required by FSE:
Firewire. Actually, Sony’s iLink which is said to be Firewire although it has only 4 pins whereas Apple’s implementation has 6, the added two being for power. Sony tell me that when capturing, their camera must be connected to the mains and the four Firewire pins handle the data without trouble.
However, another point concerns page 15 of FCE’s “Getting Started”, which refers to “Apple Firewire” (the default) and “Apple Firewire Basic”, which “is a simplified device control protocol for camcorders and decks that aren’t compatible with the full Apple Firewire set. Using this protocol doesn’t affect the quality of the captured video or audio.” I am assuming that this is the same point above concerning 4/6 pins and that FCE will be happy if it turns out that the Sony iLink uses “Apple Firewire Basic”. Correct?
And that I will have Device Control?
In Easy Setup, should I select "Firewire Basic"?
The camcorder comes with a driver for the Mac, which provides for capture (presumably Device Control via FCE’s “Capture now” button).
DV, not MPEG.. whatsit.
miniDV tape cassette, not DVD, Hard Drive nor Solid state.
DV out. No DV in because, as I understand it, DV in is used for archiving video on to miniDV tape and I don’t think I would want that – I plan to archive videos on DVD as QT movies.
Sony say that the DCR-HC94E stripes a digital timecode on to the tape. I believe that FCE needs this.
Other Features (extract):
The chip is physically 16:9 and all its pixels are used in forming a 16:9 frame. If used in 4:3 mode, the pixels to the left and right are not used. I think that this is True Widescreen and not one of the compromise ways of achieving it by, eg., compression and subsequent expansion.
3.3 Megapixels “Advanced HAD CCD”.
10 times zoom (I would have liked more, but that’s life).
Manual focus, and full-range auto focus, White Balance (“Auto, Outdoor, Indoor, One-push”).
“Super SteadyShot”. (That is, anti-wobble control.) Electronic.
2.7 inch viewfinder LCD panel, 123,200 pixels
Low light performance - “Min. Illumination = 5 lux”.
Battery runtime = 2 hours.
No external mike (pity).
It is remarkably small. “What Digital Camcorder”, issue 77, has a praising review of the next model up (DCR-HC96E), the only difference being that the 96E has DV in.
Thanks for any observations before I plunge into my wallet and let the moths out.

Tom, Martin and Ian:Re. DV in etc. Thanks.
Being an amateur, (and beginner in video editing) my videos will, I think, be family movies; editing a 50-year old 8 mm cine film converted by a video lab to a PAL DVD, which I have nearly finished; and probably making videos of the country district where I live for depositing at the county library for future use, perhaps 100 years from now (if human civilisation survives that long which I doubt); and possibly some simple training videos. I am not planning on making artistic movies.
What I have been doing (so far only with the converted cine) is to edit it, export it as a QT file and use Toast (Roxio) to burn to DVD as the distribution version. (Toast also allows "burning" to a Disc Image, for checking before wasting DVD-Rs). I then check the DVD on a stand-alone DVD player and a domestic TV. I am assuming that all my efforts will likely follow that route.
Tom (and others) said:
"You want DV in. It lets you record your finished movie back to tape."
But why would I want to do that? Archiving? But is minDV tape so long-lasting? DVDs may not last more than 20 years and will need refreshing (re-recording on current media) which decendants won't do but that's another story. To view and check the finished video? But wouldn't my method (QT, DVD player, TV, described above) do that for me? To dub from a TV broadcast or to transfer to VCR tape via A/V? I have a combo VCR/DVD set-top video recorder which can do both of those (in the second case by dubbing from the above-mantioned distribution DVD).And VCR tape is on the way out, at least in the UK (Dixons no longer sell tape or tape-based VCRs) but of course peoples' tape VCRs will remain working for, say, 10 years.
On the lack of an external mike, its a budget thing. Sony Centre said that the only detectable camera noise would be if the ambient sound was very low and as a result the gain was increased. But hopefully I could add a suitable ambient audio track as a sound bed (Tom's book, page 132) to drown it - music, general ambient, sheep.
I'm probably wrong, but not too proud to be corrected.
Meteorites, hmmm... As a pessiminst, they worry me, but hopefully I will be dead before one strikes!

  • Bluetooth Compatibility check before buying Nokia

If you are thinking of buying a Nokia and want it so you can use the Bluetooth in your car first check your radio BT.
If its a parrot (the bluetooth option in it) then check this page for compatibility first.

I can't guarantee it will still work (parrot/nokia pairing is not reliable) but it's a start.

  • Stolen iPad (check before buying a 2nd Hand iPad)

We lost an iPad today (4/12/12), apparently picked up by a guy in the Dressing Room @ Myth Store,(Philippines) at around 5PM. The guy is likely a companion or bodyguard of a lady who transacted in the same store named Elizabeth XX.
Stolen iPad details are as follows:
         iPad-1 64Gb 3G (model A1337)
         Serial# V5******ETV
         IMEI
So if found or offered for sale, it's best reported or returned to its rightful owner.

You need a Blackberry dataplan for your device. Otherwise, you will only be able to do Phone + SMS.
contact your carrier and ask them what they can sell you.
your carrier will give you a BIS account. Then, you can use any email address to connect to your BlackBerry device. You can get a BlackBerry email address but it has less features than a regular email address on GMail ot Yahoo!Mail or Hotmail.

  • Buying a new camcorder

    Hi All,
I have iMovie HD 6 and am going to buy a new camcorder. I am looking at a Sony HDR SR12 which is a high definition one.
What I wanted to check was that will the footage I shoot be compatible with the iMove HD6 and will I be able to produce dvds that will still play on non high definition TVs.
Also does anyone have any comment on that camcorder or another one that has a hard drive and works well with the Apple machines. I went for Sony as I heard they were compatible.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Steve

Get a mini DV camcorder with a firewire output. I own 3 different Sony Hi-Def HDV camcorders that work very well with iMovie and iDVD. Hard drive might seem like a good idea, but mini DV tapes are $2 each at Costco and you can save the footage as long as the tape will last; with hard drive you have to transfer and edit everything you shoot right away to make room to shoot more.
(Just like every digital camera owner has had to delete photos to shoot more photos when the memory card is full)
iDVD does a great job of converting your movie projects to standard def if you edit in HD in iMovie, but remember HD takes up about 4 times the hard drive space, so be sure to have lots of hard drive available to capture and edit (WD 1 Terabyte $199 @ Costco)
With Toast 9 you can actually burn Hi-Def DVDs that will play on a Blu-Ray player, but you are limited to about a half hour, or an hour if you use a dual-layer DVD.
    Hope that helps.

imho, there is no more reason to decide for SDef.
speaking of Optical Zoom + price range: consider those 'still'-cams with video-ability. I like to recommend my (old) Lumix FZ38, a lense of 26-580mm is excellent for sports recordings. Price. >300€ ...

  • Need advice before buying MBP please!!

Hi everyone, sorry this is AGAIN a "need help before buying" post.
I'm basically looking to buy a MBP for movie production : I will do data transfer (footage into USB3 to TB2 drives/USB3 drives).
And maybe some playback of very large 4K video files.
I was looking at a few options :
First of all I missed my chance and saw a rMBP 15inch 2.4ghz(ish) for 1900 (canadian) and didn't order it.
I've got my eyes on either another rMBP which is a 2.7 with Geforce 650M (june 2012) for 2400$ or a brand new one with maybe 2.5ghz for 2200$.
Your advices on these models? Is the Iris Pro GPU good enough? Is 2.2ghz enough for my tasks?
    Thanks soooo much!!

    Hi pbearr,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I’m glad to hear that you are in the market for a new Mac! I wanted to chime in here and make a quick comment about 4K video support. Are you planning on purchasing an external 4K monitor? If so, keep in mind that a 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display does not support 4K video. To learn more, please check out this resource:
Using 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with Mac computers - Apple Support
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202856
You can use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with these Mac computers.
MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013 and later)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
iMac (27-inch, Late 2013 and later)
    Mac mini (Late 2014)
Every user, task, and configuration is different. I wish you all of the luck in determining which Mac is the best for you!

  • Final Cut - Best buy?

I have a Mac OS X version 10.4.11 and I will be buying a new computer in a about 8 months. Before I can buy a new computer I have to edit (a lot) of footage from my Canon 7d, I know I need a more capable software than imovie hd 6.0.3 to begin. Therefore, my question is regarding final cut, what would be the best version of final cut to buy for that is compatible with this kind of footage and my Mac? I'm sure it will be an older version and that is fine I just have to get this done in the next four months! And I am pretty clueless when it comes to all this stuff so if any of you can help that would be greatly appreciated!
    -Laura

    Hi there
you're going to have to get away from the 7D's H.264 to work effectively in Final Cut, normally Id say prores422LT as a good choice but you're in a slightly different position as far as OS goes because it LT doesnt exist in 10.4.11.
I guess you want to keep costs upgrades etc to a minimum so if you stay with 10.4.11, try and find a copy of FCP 6.0.3, this should work with Prores 422 (standard). Use compressor or mpeg streamclip to transcode to that from H.264 onto a fast (extra internal sata ideally) drive.
Alternatively, get a copy of FCP 5 and transcode to AIC or ....
bring forward your purchase to June and get FCPX at the same time.
    cheers
    Andy

  • Wish I'd Seen This Site Before Buying

Wish I had seen this site before buying my laptop.  Purchased it on Jan. 4 and sent it in for repairs on Feb. 2.  Had had 3 different problems--2 with CD drive and the third and final was when the display backlight blew.  HP has now extended the delivery date for the 3rd time and when you talk to the 1-800 service number, you get an "I don't know" attitude and we'll see what we can do.   HP has had my laptop longer than I have and I think they should just send me a NEW (not reconditioned) laptop.  They don't seem to have any parts on hand to fix my computer---probably are getting their paperwork together to file Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.  You can bet I won't EVER buy another HP product.  Thanks for letting me vent my anger!!!!

    --UPDATE--
Got the card working 5 minutes ago and logged onto the server to play BF242. After less than 5 minutes the thing raped my ears again with another high pitched squeal. As I'm typing this I have proper tinitus.
I have removed the card and I'm getting a refund tomorrow. I'm also downloading the realtek drivers and going back to onboard sound. Might not be particularly good, but it works and doesn't make my ears bleed when it decides not to.

  • Importing video from old camcorder to mac without using a newer camcorder?

I'm trying to import old home videos from a camcorder (from about 1991) that uses cassettes, onto my Mac. I tried searching for this here and I found this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1943045&#1943045. But I actually don't have a newer camcorder to rerecord it on. Is there a way to get it on my computer without it?

    Hello Cris,
you actually don't need a new camera to get analog video into your mac, in fact there are not so many cameras that support AV-in.
read the thread you posted in your question again and you'll find an AV/DV converter, a device that "translates" from analog to digital, mentioned there.
these converters are not as costly as good camcorders, but of course they do only this one thing, so if you think about buying a new camcorder in the near future, you could buy one with AV-in .... two devices in one.
oh yeah: the canopus converters mentioned in that thread are supposed to be good.
    hope this helps

  • Selecting/importing more than one clip from camcorder using check boxes

    Hi.
I've just bought a new camcorder (SD Card) based. I used to use Mini DV tapes.
Now when I import into iMovie9 I am able to select which clips I import. I always choose manual import because I like to save different clips into different topics.
I am able to uncheck all the clips and individually select each one I want to import but I'm baffled about how to select more than one clip at a time and then check the import box. e.g. select clips 3 to 15 and then having to check the box once instead of checking ever box for each clip. There must be something like hold shift down while selecting but I've not managed to work it out yet!
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
I import clips as you do - by manually ticking the box in each clip. Like you, I haven't figured out a way to select a group of clips in one go - that would be very handy! Sorry I can't help - I'll be interested to see what answers you get.
