New Camera (D700 in this case) Raw files

My understanding is the Apple has made it easy to add new camera profiles for Aperture.
While we wait for a "timely" update from Apple for a new Camera, in my current case the D700, I have seen that users are proposing workarounds for modifying existing profiles to allow Aperture to work. (In this case duplicating the D3 specs and labeling the copy D700. Presumably you could do this with other similar camera types.)
Has anyone here tried such a solution? Does anyone know the risks (if any) involved? Is this procedure documented anywhere on the Apple side? Does Nikon spell the requirements somewhere (I could not find with google)?
I bought Aperture so that I did not have to use Adobe products, but I see that they (Adobe) have the new camera (D700) raw conversion in this case (almost immediately after product release).
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm also waiting for Apple to support the D700.
There are a variety of options in the mean time. The easiest is to use Adobe's DNG converter to convert your D700 NEFs to DNG. Aperture will then render them using its generic DNG algorithms. See this article for details.
Other folks are altering the IDs embedded in the NEFs to read "D3". Aperture will then read the files and think that they came from the supported D3.
Another option is to convert the NEFs to DNGs and then add an entry in the raw plist file for D700 support. You can read about it here.
Cheers,
Andreas

  • New camera and can't open raw files..

I just upgraded my camera from a rebel xt to a T3i and now I am unable to open RAW files.
I am using PSE 5.0.  Any advice?

    Hi,
The T3i requires a minimum level of ACR 6.4 - which isn't supported by PSE 5
    Your options are
    1) Upgrade pse to PSE 9 or higher (PSE 12 will probably be out soon)
    2) Use the Canon software that came with your camera
    3) Download/Install the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert your CR2 files to DNG files - the DNG files can then be processed by PSE 5
If you consider upgrading, then you could download the trial version to see if you like it.

The first thing I did was UPDATE. I have all the latest updates available (according to the updater). The Camera Raw Plug-in says it is version 8.0.
The RAW files are from a Canon T3i. It's a very common camera, I can't believe it wouldn't be supported.

  • New Camera Profiles and very high ISO files

I am having some difficulty directing this 'beta' comment as there no longer seems to be a Labs forum for the new Profiles. My apologies, if necessary, for therefore intruding on a user-to-user.
Also, to add to my misdemeanours, I previously posted the following (slightly amended here) in the LR forum - which again may be not the ideal place.
"I have been really impressed with the camera profiles - in my case the Standard NEF for a D3 - and posted a complimentary message to that effect on the Labs LR beta2 forum under the pseudonym Rockshead.
The revelation that each profile is camera specific raises a particular question about that for the D3. Whilst the conversions at 'normal' ISO ratings are - as I said - stunning; the same cannot be said of those for the very high ISO numbers available with the D3; compared to the conversion of the same in View/CaptureNX. Applying LR noise reduction - by the bucket load - cerrtainly aids the definition, but has little effect on the colour differences.
I suppose my question is, is this something that we have to live with; or is there hope for the future that this will be able to be sorted by further tweak of the profiles. I can quite understand if this is element of the conversion is another ingredient of Nikon's secret sauce, and therefore outside of Adobe's future thinking? Nevertheless, it would be interesting to know the thinking.
Let me hasten to say, I am content to live with it for the relatively few ultra high ISO pictures I deal with. No complaints at all from me on the brilliant way Adobe has tackled the camera profile upgrade. Nevertheless, regular use of high ISOs is coming, and so it is a legitimate question,"

    1. Can if you can provide a documentation for such color differences in form of a raw file and pointing out some differences caused by the conversion?
    2. "Very high ISO numbers" is not very specific. I wonder if you are aware of the fact, that your camera's highest real ISO setting is 6400. The settings 12800 and 25600 are eye-wash, meant only for those creating JPEG in-camera.

  • Compatibility issue with Nikon's D700 and Aperture downloading RAW files.

Need a little help with this one - purchased a NIKON D700 (today) and tried to download RAW files into Aperture - got a bad message - unsupported image format - (shows on a reddish background)
I worked on the problem for about 4 hours, both with the software and the camera, but to no avail... upon inital download you see a small image but the message occurs when the image is clicked on.
Thank you in advance for any comment or idea you might have.... occurring

You will have to wait until Apple updates the MacOS to recognize the D700 in its RAW profile. It's not listed yet:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475
You'll have to shoot JPEG or use Nikon's software until Apple gets around to it. Maybe try Lightroom.

  • Just bought the new Canon G.11, cannot open raw files

Although the Raw suffix for the new Canon G.11 is given as .cr2 which it appears Adobe Raw v.5 recognises for other  Canons, Raw files on my G.11 will not open in Photoshop CS4.  Only up to the G.10 is so listed. Anyone got any ideas how soon Adobe will update so the G.11 raw files can open direct?

I believe John Joslin has already advised you use Adobe Digital Negative
Converter (DNG) - you'll find it via Google if you don't already know it.
Bit tedious, it involves the software copying all your cr2 raw image files
into this "universal" imaging, but it works.  I first used it when I
upgraded an Olympus E1 to E3.   The E1 .orf raw images opened on my CS2, but
the E3 .orf images would not!
Otherwise, you will need CS4, also, at present must download the latest
Adobe Raw v5.5 to go with it, particularly if you have the G.11.
Various Canon digitals give a file suffix of cr2, and some earlier Canons
giving cr2 are accepted on CS4 but my recently purchased G.11 (only retailed
from 1 October) would not open its cr2 files till I downloaded v5.5.
If you have the G.11, I bought mine deliberately as a compact alternative to
my Olympus E3; with an upcoming touring trip to India from which just
returned .  The G.11 is so handy and easy to operate, it literally became
the daily camera of use, and I am very pleased with its performance all
round.  Over 400 images each combined jpg/raw on an 8gb SD card still had
plenty of space for many more.

  • Canon 6d camera. Cannot view CR2 Raw files in my iMac folders.

I have just updated my camera from Canon 500D to 6D full frame and I am unable to view any of the raw files in the Mac pictures files. I don't use iphoto or aperture preferring to use the in built pictures folders.
I had Photoshop Elements 9 and have updated to Elements 12. If I say take twenty raw images and load into my iMac they show up as a thumbnail with an image number and not a lot else. This is clearly not helpful when trying to view images before editing. Yes I can use Canon software DPP but hey ho I like the Apple pictures folders for storing my images. The raw CR2 files from the 6D are of course different to the CR2 files that I used to create on my old camera 500D
Can someone help so I can actually see a thumbnail of the actual raw images in my iMac pictures folders?
    Many thanks

I'm having this problem as well. I have had my 6d for a while and it worked fine before the software upgrade a few weeks ago.
I can get my pictures imported into iPhoto, but they only import as JPG, not the RAW files that sit in the camera. Before the software upgrage, I could get the mac to recognise the Canon 6d and import the RAW files directly from it. Now I can't get the mac to recognise the camera at all.
I want to process in Lightroom but they import as jpgs and they all just look wrong!
    Somebody please help!
    Thank you.

  • I have PE11, new camera Canon Rebel t5i, in raw format, "not supported by installed version of raw".

I am using Photoshop Elements 11, using WIndows 7 Operating System. I have a new camera Canon Rebel T5i, and having problem viewing images in raw format (cr2).
Message in PE11, states, "Camera model not supported by installed version of Camera raw."
    Canon software views images.
Suspect my minimum camera raw plug in version does not support this new camera....
I am unable to locate in the software any menu item that allows me to view the camera raw plug  in version.
Appreciate any support from our Adobe forum.

Ice Storm of 2013 has hit hard, plenty of downed tree limbs and all terrain is shiny !!

At least one person was able to get ACR 8.3 to install into PSE11 using the direct-download link for ACR 8.3 CC  on Adobe’s blog, so you might try that:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2011/03/keeping-photoshop-up-to-date.html#notconnected
After downloading, if on Wndows, unzip the setup.zip to somewhere, like your Desktop, and then run the AdobePatchInstaller.  I expect there’s a similar process for Macs, but I don’t have one so cannot advise, specifically.

  • Hi, I have an issue with my Aperture, I recently had a Samsung HD with 225 gb Aperture library fail. As per the instructions I moved the library to a new hard drive, in this case a 2tb Time Capsule. Now Aperture opens but no pictures

Hi, I had a Samsung 1tb hard drive fail with a 225gb Aperture library on it, as per onscreen instructions I transferred the library to another hard drive in this case a 2tb Time Capsule. Now when I open the Aperture library I see the file structure and the white outline of the photos but no photos. When I try to export photo I get a pop up saying, 'selected master version offline'. The metadata is showing the photo details and size but no pic, and the aperture library is still showing it as 225gb
If anyone has any suggestions or a way of finding the master files I would deeply appreciate it.
    Many thanks

When a drive reports failed the data on that drive should be suspected to be corrupt. Initially one should assume any copies made of data after the drive starts reporting failing will also be corrupt.
    After a drive reports failure:
When a drive reports to be failing our first concern should be the integrity of the existing backup of the data on that drive. It is easy to manage to corrupt the backup data during efforts to retrieve the failing-drive data.
Step one should be to back up the back up of the failed drive. The known-good backups should be carefully quarantined from the likely-corrupt data.
Step two (which should only happen after step one is complete and verified) is to make post-drive-failure copies of data from the failing HDD and make efforts to verify the accuracy of the data copied from the failed drive.
    Before a drive reports failure:
Originals from the camera card should be separately backed up prior to import into Aperture or any other images management application. Always.

Bridge writes metadata to sidecar XMP file for raw files. I would doubt that iphoto can read the xmp file, but I don't know for sure.
EDIT but one thing to check is to be sure that you are creating sidecar files and not writing to a central database. The setting is in the Camera Raw preferences (click the little square with the lines on it over the preview area in the raw converter).

  • Question about the smell of new Apple products (in this case an iMac)

    Hi!
I wonder what's up with the smell of new Apple products, because they all smell the same in my opinion. I got a new iMac last week and it had a special smell and i know i'm not the only one thinking this. Do Apple add this smell with a perfume to make it smell new and fresh, or is it some dangerous toxic fume from the plasic or something?
    Regards Tobias

    Thank you!
Of course everything has a smell, especially new things, but in my opinion Apple products have a much stronger smell than everything i ever owned. And as Diane Benoît replied below, see reacted heavily to her old mac (by the way, Diane im glad you don't have problems with your Mac any more).
I know iMac's are free from brominated flame retardant now, but are there any other flame retardants, or methods to avoid burning electronics, that Apple replaced the old one with?
I think my Mac have a kind of sweet smell, that is why i wonder if it's added to make it smell nice.
