New camera purchase

I have been using FCE for about a year and am ready to take my production to the next level. I think I have graduated from family events and am ready to try weddings and graduations. I am currently using a Hi8 camera that is about 5 years old. I think that since alot of people have HDTVs that I should purchase a camera that is capable of shooting in HD. I have looked around, but most of the new cameras seem to record onto DVD or onto a hard drive. I used to work in TV, and am under the impression that tape storage is the way to go. My feelings are that if I'm shooting a wedding and what if my hard drive camera has a hic-up and corrupts or deletes my footage. If I am shooting with a DVD camera and it gets scratched, there goes my footage. Plus, the news guys use here use tape cameras. Granted, they are 20K+ in cost, but I would like to know if anyone has any suggetions for a tape based HD camera in the price range os $1200 - $1500. I have been reading these forums for a year and it seems this is where those in "the know" hang out. I would appreciate any feed-back. Thanks

Canon HV20 is going for about $700 now. Spend the leftover $800 on a Steadicam Merlin.

  • Unable to view RAW thumbnails in Bridge since getting new camera

    Hi,
I have just purchased a new camera, and am unable to see the RAW file thumbnails as I would normally, when using the Photo Uploader in Bridge.
    I have Elements 8, on a Mac.
I have downloaded the latest version of ACR, 6.2, in order to recognize the new camer's RAW files.
I can see the RAW image, but only if I open it via PSE8, and not when uploading to the Mac via Bridge. The only way I can see and process the RAW image is if I open the file via PSE8. If I look in Bridge, all I can see are lots of generic thumbnail images from PSE8.
My question mainly is how do I resolve this, as I am used to being able to see all of my RAW files in Bridge, and like using Bridge.
Do I need to update Bridge separately from ACR 6.2?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Barbara,
are you saying that I will not be able to use Bridge with any RAW file taken with the Lumix LX5?
If that is the case, what are m options? I would like to be able to see the thumbnails of the photos I have taken, in a Workspace setting, but at presnt, all I can do is see an individual photo by opening it via PSE8.
This is now extremely cumbersome, and frankly a real pain.
Would there be any advantage to purchasing PSE9?
I would appreciate any help at all.

I have photoshop CS 4 extended.  Just recently I purchased a Canon 70D as well as a Dell 17 Inspiron with windows 7.  When I download my pictures from my camera to the computer, they will not open up in raw, only jpeg.  I contacted Canon, and they told my to try something but it did not work.  How do I get my raw pictures to open up in CS 4 on my new computer from my new Canon 70D?

You will never be able to open your raw files from your new camera in CS4.
You need version 8.7.1 of the Camera Raw plug-in (ACR), which only runs in CS6 and higher.
You need to locate, download, install and run the free, stand-alone application Adobe DNG Converter on each batch of raw files from that camera, in order to convert them to raw DNG files that can be subsequently opened by ACR in CS4.
Remember you need to launch and run the DNG Converter on each folder (not files) containing your Canon raw files.  THe DNG Converter doesn't do it magically for you just sitting on your HD.
    Or you can upgrade.

  • Apperture doesn't read the RAW files from my new Camera

Hi, Apperture doesn't read the RAW files downloaded from my new Camera Fujifilm X-S1. What options do I have to work with .RAF (Fujifilm RAW)?
I was thinking about using RAW Converter PRO but it cannot upload the full information contained into the RAF file. Maybe there is another Program I can use until Aperture includes my camera in its DB.
    Greats!

I've been a loyal Apple user for 20 years and have been using Aperture for the last 2 years. The X-pro came out a YEAR ago and still no x-trans sensor support and yet Lightroom by Adobe and Capture One now has RAW support.I've had to switch to the Lightroom trial as I have a busy studio in hope that Apple might bother with me but again no reply to my emails.
If I have to purchase Lightroom I will probably not come back to Aperture which is a shame
Apple seem to have got too big for good customer service these days unless it's an iPhone or iPad

  • Camera roll photos from new camera not showing in Apps

I got a new camera for Christmas which can transfer photos to my iPad via SamsungSmartCameraApp. This works ok, the photos show up in the Photos app, but they don't show up in other apps.
Eg. When I go to select photos to edit in Aviary, I can see all my other pictures, but not the ones transferred from my camera. It's the same in Facebook.
I have posted some of the photos to Facebook from Photos, but still couldn't select them from my camera roll in Facebook.
What's the problem, and how do I fix it?
I've tried editing the photos, thinking that might resave them as something normal, but no luck. I don't know what else to try.
I have an iPad mini, 12.7 GB, iOS 8.1.2. I can't find what version of Photos I have, but everything seems up to date. The camera is a Samsung WB200F.
Thanks for any advice you can offer

Providing it is the same app, you can download it again without being charged. It does not matter what price you paid (even if the app was free) - even if the app is no longer free this will be a free download.
To ensure it is the same app, go to (on your computer):
iTunes Store > Account > Purchase History
It's also possible that the app does not appear under the Apps tab if that app is not compatible with your iOS version.

  • Elements 7 does not recognise RAW files from my new camera

Have recently bought a new camera (Canon EOS 60d), which is an import.  Whilst I can process Jpegs in Elements the RAW files are not recognised.  Help

PSE7 is three years old, and camera makers are constantly changing the formats of the RAW images they use.  There's no way for PSE7 to open those new RAW files, beause the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW is incompatible.
You'll have to use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the RAW files and then open the DNG files in PSE:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5375
    Or you can purchase PSE10.

  • Ready for a new camera

    Hi,
I’ve been using the T3i with an EF 100-400 lens for about four years now. I’ve gotten a lot of good service out of it without any problems. I mainly photograph birds but never been happy with my BIF shots in comparison to friends that own the 7D & EF 100-400 lens. What I’ve mainly noticed on my shots is the whole bird is never 100% in focus. And when standing next to friends with the 7D, they are able to get the whole bird in focus. I have tried multiple setting over the years and the only thing I can come up with is the 7D has 19 focusing points and is able to have all the BIF in focus.( or is there another setting the 7D has I’m unaware of? ) I would love to be able to use a 7D but I have lost my grip and can’t even carry my puny T3I around as long I use to. I have noticed that after a few hours I’m starting to quiver and it is noticeable in my photos. Canon announced the new EOS 750 & EOS 760. Both sound like they might be my answer since they have 19 focusing points like the 7D instead of the 9 like my T3I. Camera weight is the main factor in deciding on a new camera along with using my EF 100-400 lens.
I would really appreciate any camera suggestions and your feelings about the new 750D or 760D. When might these cameras become available for purchase? I’m sure I’ll want to wait until I can hear the good the bad and the ugly before buying. Thanks in advance for your time.

If quivering is truly the problem, the traditional solutions are a monopod and image-stabilized lenses. The former should reduce the quivering; the latter is designed to reduce its effect.
And if the superior autofocus system of hte 7D will help, there may not be a better time to buy one; the 7D2 will inevitably make traditional 7D's harder to sell, The 7D is a very good camera; my two 7D'd have served me well. That's not to disparage the two newer cameras; but early adopters risk the startup pains that new models often have. The 7D is a known quantity.

  • New Camera RAW Tutorial Series

John Nack has just blogged about a new Camera RAW tutorial series by George Jardine.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2013/12/25-new-video-tutorials-on-camera-raw.html
It cost $30 which does not sound much, but I'd love to hear feedback from anyone who has seen it.
You can read more details at
    http://mulita.com/blog/?page_id=6934
Including a link to a 17 minute free chapter.

    Thank you, Trevor.
I've been waiting and hoping that George would do a series on the latest Camera Raw to match his tutorials on Lightroom, which he always does first.
I purchased his series on ACR 6 and they were excellent, so I have every faith that his new series on ACR 8.3 in CC (which also covers ACR 8.3 and ACR 7.x in CS6) will be just as good.
So far I have watched the first 6 tutorials (ending with the one on the Basic Tab) and they are pretty good.
One of the bonuses is that along the way he gives you links to further in-depth totorials on his Website regarding particular topics: eg, the interaction of, and different ways of manipulating, the Highlights/Shadows and Whites/Blacks sliders for particular types of images. Looking forward to viewing those.

  • New camera, Organiser, website, & captions - (this is a rather specialised question)

I have a large website picture gallery, which used Elements Organiser and JAlbum. The captions were simply transferred from Organiser to the website, which was great. I have many Nikon cameras.
Having purchased a new camera for specific purposes, (an Olympus 550) I have hit an unexpected and curious problem. Although the captions are displayed in the normal manner in Organiser, when it opens on the website it displays - either ''latest pictures-042.jpg'' (see http://www.natureandpictures.co.uk/albums/LATEST%20PICTURES/slides/latest%20pictures-042. html ) or ''OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA'' (see http://www.natureandpictures.co.uk/albums/LATEST%20PICTURES/slides/latest%20pictures-100. html ) On the index page, it shows no caption at all.
Being a writer/photographer dependant on such things, could anyone recommend me any adjustment that may be made to Organiser. I have tried repeatedly to type in a caption and it only happens with this camera.
    Thank you,
    Ian Julian
    www.natureandpictures.com

    Ian,
For the photos taken with the Olympus camera, I would expect that when you viewed the Caption in the Organizer it would have shown as "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA". At least that is what I have experienced when I viewed in the Organizer photos taken by an Olympus 8080 and multiple other Olympus cameras. It appears that the cameras are placing that text in the field that the Organizer uses as Caption.
I don't have a web site but I do sometimes make slide shows where I choose to automatically display the Caption and this Olympus text would appear. My solution for the photos from Olympus cameras is to clear the caption field -
Do you have the "Organize Your Photos with Adobe Photoshop Elements 3" book? - if yes, look at page 106
If not, here is a summary
    - Find > By Caption and enter Olympus
    - select all photos returned by that Find
    - Edit > Add Caption then check Replace Existing Captions and blank out the caption
find the relevant photos by searching
Multiple Select the thumbnails for the Olympus camera photos, choose Update Caption, then clear the text and hit enter.

  • Looking for new camera - what is compatiable and what is best ??

I am purchasing a macbook pro in the very near future (next week) and am also in need of a new camera. What brands are compatable? Is there a list that I can reveiw?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1. Are you buying a camera that shoots RAW or one that shoots only jpegs? If jpegs then any camera that saves to a card - compact flash, SD etc - will work with iPhoto. Buy a USB card reader, they're inexpensive and save on wear and tear on the camera. Then pop the card from the camera into the card reader and iPhoto will import them.
    2. If you're planning on shooting RAW this list is useful:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475
    3. Other than that, the best suggestions are to stick with a major brand and have a look at the review sites: here's a couple:

  • Advice on Buying a New Camera

I'm looking into buying a new camera.  This is going to be a long-term investment, obviously, that I would like to have for everyday use, but the major reason I'm purchasing a new camera is for a trip that I'm taking in October.  I will be going to Tanzania (East Africa) to live for 10 months and planning on doing a lot of additional traveling while there.
I'd like to buy a camera that is relatively compact and easy to travel with (so that I can store it easily in a bag to conceal it).  My price range is anywhere between $300-$700.  Obviously I would like a camera that offers excellent picture quality - I would like everything to be bright, colorful, nonblurry, etc.
The critical thing is that I know NOTHING about cameras or photography, so I'm ultimately most concerned about getting a camera that is relatively easy to use (I'm willing to put some effort into learning, but I won't have a ton of time) and that can make my photos look (semi)professional FOR me, without having to be a professional.
I definitely want a digital camera, but I don't know whether I want a compact or a bridge.  I'm assuming that a bridge digital camera offers higher quality photos, which is very important to me, but I'm concerned that it may be more difficult to use/learn, will be less convenient for snapping quick photos, and will be bulkier to travel with.  But then I'm concerned that a compact camera won't give me the professional quality photos (at least without the expertise/effort needed) that I'm looking for.
Could anyone offer me some advice based on the information above about brands, types, specific cameras, etc - anything at all will be GREATLY appreciated!

My opinion of bridge cameras is that they offer all of the disadvantages of an SLR (bulk, large size) without any of the advantages (interchangeable lenses, large sensor), and some additional disadvantages (point-and-shoot superzooms almost universally suffer from severe distortions.)
For point-and-shoots - I'd suggest a higher-end unit like the Canon G12, it's Canon's flagship P&S, and is the P&S the pros tend to go for when they can't carry their beloved SLR.
If you have any intention of doing wildlife photography - get an SLR kit along with an additional telephoto lens, such as a 70-300 f/3.5-5.6 lens.  You'll need the reach AND the fast autofocus for wildlife.

  • IPod Nano using the new Camera Connector

I resently purchased an iPod Nano and a new Camera Connector direct from Apple. Before I did this I checked the compatability issue with both the camera and the camera connector, and with the Nano and the camera connector. All the adds at the Apple store state that the camera connector works with all ipods that have a color screen. When I connect them the screen on the ipod states "The currently attached accessory is not supported by this iPod". They advertise that you can store 25,000 photos in a Nano. Did I waste my money on a Nano and camera connector. (I already had a 4G 20GB iPod with an older Belkin Camera connector)

Yes, you may have wasted your money on the camera connector. The problem is that the camera connector has been out for a while and, at the time it was made, the only color iPods were full sized ones, and the camera worked with them. So, what they advertised was true up to the time until the Nano was released.
Now, Apple has released the Nano, which technically is a color iPod, and it dosen't work with the camera connector. The problem is that they haven't changed the advertising for other products to account for limitations of the Nano yet.

  • New cam HD and imovie

Im thinking of getting new HD camcorder, Now If i get one that shoots 1080p in avchd will this work in imovie to idvd to a dvd well or will i have interlacing problems or need to convert the file before i put it into imovie? Ive had alot of problems with my DV cam. And im hoping getting a 1080p one will fix this.

I hear ya. I even partitioned my disk and started down the dual boot path to keep my Windows video editing, but then decided to really give the Mac a solid chance before giving up. (I messed up my disk trying to reclaim the hidden windows boot partition and had to restore the whole machine from Time Machine. )
It was interesting to read that Apple let some Final Cut Studio developers go. Some folks even suggested that this move indicates Apple moving toward iPhone/iPad apps and putting less importance on development for the iMac platforms.
The camera manufacturers are flooding the consumer market with HD lite, Full HD, and even lately Full HD+ (60p) cameras. Millions of people are buying these cams with little idea that their $100 camera purchase is going to need a thousand (or more ) dollar computer purchase, 2TB external disk, and at the minimum a $100 editor purchase. (I got Cyberlink PD8 Ultra for $70 after trying seven different under $200 editors on my 2003 P4. I didn't even need a new PC, but fell in love with the iMac 27" display, and got tired of Microsoft Tuesdays and Norton intelligent virus updates every 5 minutes. My PC could render video but the Norton "intelligent updates" crippled the machine.)
Enough *******' though, I love my iMac. I can live with iMovie09 and Toast Pro as long as Apple updates don't break anything... I keep reading about people having update problems - scares me.
(Let's hope they don't fine us for thread creep.)
