New Card Reader-no photos in library

Hi All,
I just imported some pictures via a card reader, the icon images are in iPhoto, but when I click them it is telling me they cannot be found and a ? shows up. Now I know they were imported because I clicked import, and they are also showing under "Last Import".
Unfortunately, my card reader deletes everything once imported (I set it up that way, which I think I should not have done). Please tell me how to find my pictures or what is going on!
Thanks
Jeff

I did not have "copy imported items" checked. And can't find "referenced library".
a referenced library (that option is not checked)
You have a referenced library - which is not recommended for many reasons one being that importing photos becomes more complex
Since you told iPhoto not to copy the photos it did not - it referenced them and to use them they must always remain where it referenced them - unfortunately that is the memory card and you have deleted them from there so unless something like media recover - http://www.mediarecover.com/ - will recover them they are gone
I suggest that you reconsider the decision you made to not copy your photos to the iPhoto library or learn how to use that option correctly knowing that you are totally responsible for managing the photos and keeping them in their original location - referenced libraries are difficult for knowledgeable, experienced users, they are pretty much impossible for others

  • CF card reader for photo impport does not show on LR3

Firsst I'm a newbie to Apple and LR3 and using Scott Kelby's LR3 book to start. Incredible as it may be I'm stuck beyond Step 2 (the very beginning of the book) in trying to import photos, first form a DVD and also from a CF card reader. The error message on my DVD says that there is an initialization error (OK, OK , the DVD with photos was created on another laptop, running on Windows Vista, so it may be a Read Only file). Aside from that, however, my CF card with photos does not even show up on LR3.
I have gone to System Preferences and changed the way I want CDs and DVDs to show. In both cases I changed it to "Open in LR3". Is that wrong?
Here is a Screen shot of LR3 Library when  tryingn to import photos. No (CF card) drive is shown. (Hope it shows)
    file://localhost/Users/dennisluz/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202012-03-19%20at%204.29.50%20PM.pn g
I'm getting desperate as I have spent many hours trying to figure how LR3 works. I have created "My LR Photos" folder in LR and I was hoping to create additional subfolders under the above to store all my photos.

    No volunteers?
OK, the saga of the non-loaded photos continues. Since my last post I have on one or two occasions been able to have photos from my CF card load and show on LR3. The last time it was successful, I had the iMac turned on first and then, after half a minute,  connected the CF card reader to the back of the computer and when LR3 was opened, the photos loaded. I have tried connecting the Card reader to the computer first before turning on the iMac but it did not work. Is there a procedure as to what should be turned on first?
Here's another thing: the one time when my photos loaded I was able to go to the Develop module and do all kinds of things the software allowed me to do. There were some photos which I did not select in the Library module and so they stayed in the CF card. Now, when I took more photos in the same CF card (there was still a lot of memory left), no new photos were able to be loaded in LR3. Do I have to clear something first, like a path?
I hope you folks who read this don't get annoyed by this on-again-off-again posting, but, as a newcomer to LR3, I find this confusing. Scott Kelby's book has been helpful in some way but it does not address many situations like mine. I wish I had spent some $$ on the other book by Victoria (?) to supplement kelby's book. Maybe I will.

  • No Joy with new card reader

    Hi All,
Just returned from Comp USA with a new Belkin 7 port USB hub and a Smartdisk SD/MS card reader.
Hub install went fine(nice to have a few more ports now) card reader is not working, it is a usb type. I have tried the back of the Mac, the hub but to no avail. Nothing mounts on the desktop. Any ideas????
I am using a SD card in it, I will be calling Smartdisk tomorrow for help, but though I would try the Mac community first.
    Thanx in Advance

If your SD card is used for your digital camera, try connecting it directly to the mac, if iPhoto launches and allows you to import your photos, then your SD card is OK. I "suspect" it is your card reader that may be faulty, since you tried in every USB port you can find
    Cheers

  • HT5172 My new Macbook Pro doesn't recognize my card reader (with a CF card inserted).

My new Macbook Pro doesn't recognize my USB card reader with a CF card inserted.  It works fine on my old Macbook Pro.
Do I need a new card reader?  USB 3 perhaps?
I would appreciate any input that you may have.  Thank you.

Hi, closereaching. Instead of spending 12 hours reinstalling your operating system and getting everything back up to date again, which probably won't accomplish anything, why not buy a $10 USB card reader for your Casio's SD card? Or (more expensive, but a much more elegant solution), an ExpressCard SD card reader that can stay in your computer all the time?

  • "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo."

    ***** UPDATE July 17, 2013 @ 9:16 am Central Time (UTC -06:00)*****
After Creating a fresh catalog I have been able to clarify the issue a bit. This error appears to only show up in Folders exported as Catalogs. Particularly when I try and open that exported catalog.
I suspect there is a problem with the way Lightroom 5 is exporting these catalogs. I didn't have this issue with LR4.4, but it shows up any time I export a folder as a catalog within LR5, regardless of whether or not it is exported from an upgraded catalog or a fressly created catalog.
It looks like fixing the problem is going to be time consuming, but not impossible. So far I have confirmed that these files - reported as throwing this error by Lightroom 5 ("Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo .... You will not be able to make adjustment to this photo.") - can be imported into a new/existing catalog by multiple methods without carrying over the errors displayed in the exported catalog.
This is frustrating and adds additional steps to my workflow, but isn't undoable. Of course it would be nice if LR5 worked as correctly and exported folders as catalogs without throwing errors when those new catalogs were opened...
Is anyone else seeing this problem when they open catalogs created by "exporting a folder as a catalog"?
    ***** Original Post *****
I'm really confused. I am consistently getting this message on certain exports, but not others...
    When it happens:
    1) "Export this Folder as a Catalog" from a specific folder within my Working Catalog
         Select the location
         Select "Export negative files"
When I open the NEW Catalog - ALL the photos reflect this error message: "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo .... You will not be able to make adjustment to this photo."
When I go to the Develop tab it displays "There was an error working with the photo" over the photo, but I can edit it... When I close the catalog and re-open it, the changes don't reflect UNTIL I go back to the Develop tab, then the thumbnail will reflect the change. But the system still insists that it has a problem with the file...
    2) The same thing happens when I export the file from my Working Catalog as an image of the same format - be it tif, dng, or psd, or RAW files. Not sure what I was refering to here (can't duplicate today - July 17).
    When it doesn't happen:
When I export the file to the auto import folder for my Portfolio catalog (original format). This seems to work...
Why am I so confused? Because all of these catalogs are located on the same drive (which is different than the drive my Working Catalog is on). When they are auto imported to my Portfolio catalog they seem to work, but everything else throws an error sinse I upgraded to LR5!
    My System:
Windows 7 Pro SP1 (fully up to date) 64-bit
    Intel Core i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz
    Installed RAM: 12.0 GB
My Lightroom 5 Working Catalog doesn't seem to be having any problems...
This problem is frustrating enough that I may go back to LR4. I can't have my archived files compromised...

Suggestion to all who encounter problems like this: if you've installed 3rd party memory cards (ram), go back to your original ram, or at least the brand of ram that your computuer came with.
    Long story, short:
I had the same error message in LR5.  It only happened with several images in a given import.  If I deleted all of the images from the import and reimported the images, a different set of images would have the error message.  The images that originally had the message would no longer have the problem.  I deleted and reimported several times while observing the same behavior.
Not only did lightroom give me issues, but Bridge had problems reading the files, and the previews of the problem images would not show up in Finder (Mac speak).  This ruled out, to me at least, that it was a software issue.  I went out and purchased a new card reader and had the same problems.  I tried a different card with different images and got the same problems.
After I contacted Adobe, they had me upload two files with the error, and they said the files were corrupted due to faulty hardware.  I took my mac book pro (13in early 2011 w/ 10.7.5) to the apple store and they ran a diagnostic test amoung other test and we came up with nothing.  Everything seemed to be good on the hardware side.  After some research the Rep. asked me about my ram (memory cards).  I had in the past installed two 3rd party cards to boost my ram from 4GB to 8GB. The rep. suggested that I go home and test the issue with the original ram my computer came with before we go any farther.  So far, I haven't had any issues.
    I hope this helps,
    Josef

  • Direct from camera or Card Reader?

Aloha all, a few questions because I'm stumped, and have searched the Canon site with no luck, so I thought I'd ask people who have real world knowledge. Here's the problem. Suddenly every program that I attempt to up-load my shots with, can not see the pictures on the camera (20d). They do recognize the camera, and it mounts fine, but it shows up with 0 photos for import. Each one says no photos to up-load, however when I view them on the camera they are there, and when I use a card reader they show up, and up-load/import fine. Any idea why they suddenly can't be seen when the camera is connected directly? More importantly for me, is there a fix you know of that doesn't involve sending the camera in for repairs?
The Applications I use, and won't show/import the shots directly from the 20d are 1. Aperture, 2. Photoshop CS, 3. iPhoto, 4. Digital Photo Professional
Part two, please bare with me.
Does/has anyone used the Sandisk Extreme USB 2.0 Reader? I'm looking for a new card reader and like this one. I don't really need/want a reader that reads 12 - 15 different cards, just a CF and maybe a memory stick. Is the USB 2 ok speed wise? (I shoot mainly RAW). Or would you recommend going FW?
Mahalo in advance for any suggestions, tips, or advice. JB

Importing directly from the camera is often problematic. It mounts using a TWAIN driver, and this always seems flaky.
Importing via a card reader mounts the device like a drive, and I have never had problems with this approach. It's almost always faster as well. The only downside is you can't do "tethered" shooting (basically live off the camera).
Anyway, is the Sandisk Extreme 2.0 reader the $90 jobbie? I believe I recall reading a review on Luminous Landscape that noted its speed is only realized if you use their Extreme 4 series of cards -- otherwise it's not all that much faster than a normal reader. I would expect most USB 2.0 or Firewire 400 readers would be fine -- personally I use a Lexus Firewire 400 reader and it has been excellent. The "right" Sandisk combo is faster, but it depends on whether you need that speed for import. It's nice, but often not a "have to have."

  • Card reader meltdown

    Strange,
I came home and roused my MacPro from sleep. I wanted to download some photos via the card reader attached to a powered Asante USB hub.
When I picked up the card reader it was HOT and smelled like melting plastic.
I disconected the reader and used its USB cable to download to my Mac directly from the camera which wokred fine.
The Asante hub seemed fine, the other USB connections to it worked fine. I ran Tech Tool on the Mac and everything was fine (including USB).
This card reader had been attached to the Mac for two years (through the hub) and always worked and NEVER felt even warm.
The reader is toast. I want to know if the short(?) caused me other problems.
    Thanks
    Peter

    My simple observation.
A new card reader works fine with the same cable and Hub port. Though I am using the new cable and different USB connection and not leaving the card reader plugged in all the time
No other problems apparent. So one fried reader and my Mac survived

  • USB memory card reader not working since latest security update

Hi, I have an iApp CR-e500 multi-format memory card reader; worked great prior to the latest security update. Now every time I plug it in I get the following errors in the console:
Oct 19 03:37:00 dachshund kernel[0]: USBF: 1496.818 AppleUSBEHCI[0x1b4d800]::Found a transaction past the completion deadline on bus 91, timing out!

The reader works fine on my office Windows laptop and my USB pendrive still works on my Mac, so the USB ports appear to be functional; they just don't like this thing anymore.
Was there a USB driver change? If so is there anything I can do to sort this? I suppose I could just buy a new card reader if someone can confirm one that works with the latest security update of 10.4.11, that would be great.
Alternatively if Apple could please loosen up whatever they tightened in their USB drivers that would be nice as well...

Disregard. Looks like it's the memory card I'm trying to mount; not working on the Windows machine either.
    Sorry!

  • My USB CF Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore. It was last week and worked fine to get pictures from my camera. Now it won't mount. I have tried another card reader and the same problem exists. Also tried different cards..

    Hi
My USB CF (Compact Flash) Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore.
Last week it worked fine to get pictures from my camera but now it won't mount at all.
I ejected it in the correct way rather than just disconnecting it but now i cannot get it to remount!
I cannot even see it in the disk utility or system profiler.
I have tried another card reader (a brand new one bought today) and the same problem exists. I've also tried different cards to see if that made a difference and they still arent being picked up on the Mac.
I have done all the usual things like rebooting, unplugging all other USB devices and then trying but nothing has worked.
I'm a photographer and I'm at my wits end here. I know the cards are fine as i have been using them without issue and they are also new.
Note: If I plug the camera in directly to the Mac, the Mac picks it up just fine as it always has done. Its just the card readers that it wont pick up anymore.
If anyone has any ideas at all other than the following (my so called friends advice) you'd earn my undting love:
    Buy a PC
Use the camera (Thats why i bought the reader in the first place - importing RAW files from the camera is SLOW!)
Replace your CF cards (I have three 8GB cards two of which i had never used til today and they dont work either!)
Buy a new card reader (this is the 5th one in two days - none work on the Mac)
    Many thanks in advance!
    LIsa

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • LR5 encountered problems reading this photo.

    Hi,
I am working on a Macbook Pro, 8gb with 1 tb
    Recently did external back up.
Mac was having issues so we ( IT guys ) did a clean install and only brought back in basics.
( I was on LR3 and PSE9 ) but we didn't bring it over as mirror copy because there were so many other items on Mac I didn't need.
I bought Mac with LR3 and PSE9 so I could not do upgrade,
I instead started the trial today, so we could merge from the external the images to Pictures. ( so it was on external in pictures and now on os-x pictures )
So LR5 brought all my catalogs in, I even got smug mug to find its catalogs. , but now I am getting ! on every image.
I have selective chosen the image from external and moved it to OS X  pictures folder.
Why am I getting the ! on the images. When I right click the ! I get error, LR has encountered problems reading this file.
when I click find in file folder I get a tiff picture with a loop on top and if I click that I get this... Item “untitled-8547-Edit.tif” is used by OS X and can’t be opened.
one thing I did just notice is the date on the tiff says, Jan 24th 1984 3am 0 bytes tiff image.   ( what the heck? )
now the image right beside it to the left is the image ( I can actually see ) and it looks good.
why is finder bringing up a bogus tiff ?
Thank you for your help. Need to be up and running. Need these ! gone , please help.

  • Computer doesn't recognize card reader

I am having trouble downloading images from the SD card used in my Canon S3IS using a LaCie card reader. Tonight I downloaded images from a 1Gb SD card from my Canon SD800IS, the card reader worked perfectly. Then when I tried to download from the 2 Gb SD card from my S3IS I couldn't get the computer to recognize that there was a card plugged in. I have an Emac using OSX 10.3.9. I have been using the Image Browser software that I had installed when I had a Canon S1 IS, it had been working fine, but now I'm not getting any response from the computer. Tonight I installed the software supplied with my S3IS and downloaded the images from the camera, but I still can't get any recognition of the card reader with the 2 Gb card. When I have the 1 Gb card in the reader I get a driver icon in about 2 seconds, but I don't get any response when the 2 Gb card is installed. I had thought that my USB ports weren't tight and didn't get a good connection but the 1 Gb card shows that the problem is elsewhere. Are card readers limited in the size of card you can use with them? I have used this card before even though sometimes I had to plug and unplug the card reader into the computer several times before it worked. I should mention that the power light on the card reader always comes on. The images download just fine from the camera and there doesn't seem to be any problem with the 2 Gb card. Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help.
    Gordon

    Terence:
That's probably what I need to do, get a newer card reader. I thought I had fixed the problem by "reformatting" my cards. I did some test shots and the reader worked fine. Next day I shot about 150 shots (on two cards in two cameras) and the computer didn't recognize either one.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Need Windows 7 driver for flash card reader

I have changed from Vista to Windows 7 on my Satellite A200-20N, and now I can't use the flash card reader in it. I have already looked for drivers, but I only find one for vista, also tried to install it, but was not successful.
How could I use my flash card reader under Windows 7?

    Hi
Unfortunately I think you can only use the Vista driver and normally they also work on Windows 7.
Maybe you can explain what not successful means exactly
Furthermore you can try a newer card reader driver from another notebook model, e. g. Satellite A300.

  • MSI P67A-G45 (B3) - Problems with USB3 & Updates & card reader, etc.

Hi, I have the MSI P67A-G45 (B3) motherboard and I'm still having problems with it (as from day one).
    1) I still seem to have some problems with stability with the USB.  I updated the drivers for the Renesas USB to the latest (2.1.39.0) from the station-drivers website,
I was thinking of grabbing the firmware update as well.  But I wasn't sure if I should.  The page also shows firmware updates for uPD720200 & uPD720200a, and I'm not sure which one is in my motherboard.  Should I update?  If so, which one is in my MB, uPD720200 or uPD720200a?
    2) I'm also having trouble updating the Intel ME Driver and the Intel INF Update (although I'm googled that the INF update doesn't really matter).
    3) I can't seem to get the firewire port working with my WD Home 2TB external HDD (it works through USB though).
    4) I have an old internal flash card (SDHC/MS/MMC/etc.) reader from another desktop that I wanted to add to my MSI one.  Is it possible to do so?  Where would I plug it in?
    5) Is there anything else I need to update: software or firmware?  I've generally updated the stuff listed in the Live Update (except for the stuff I never installed).
Thanks.  Please answer any of the questions if you can.

Thanks, Renesas update seems to have taken.  Let's hope it's more stable.

What PC is the card reader from? Some of those card readers such as from Sony & Dell will only work in the respective brand PCs they came from and not any other. I have one I removed from a Sony and it will not work in my rig. If the card reader is a normal 3rd party model purchased from a store it should work but may require drivers from the manufacturer of it. As far as plugging in a card reader they go to an internal USB header on the MB.
The old desktop was from computer maker Cisnet.
I plugged the 5-hole (or rather 4 holes, since one is blank) plug into JUSB1, but it seems to keep connecting and disconnecting in Windows 7 x64. Windows made drives for all 4 card slots, but whenever I put a memory card in, it would just connect and disconnect and the memory card would never show up.  Is it a driver problem?
It's a Foxconn internal card reader, except I can't seem to figure out which model it is despite googling (not indicated anywhere on the card reader).
Don't really want to cough up $15-$20 for a new card reader, so I'm hoping to get this one to work.  Thanks.

  • I have a Panasonic FZ38 HD camera. I can load and view my hd movies onto iMovie with no problems via my camera or a card reader.  When I try to copy my hd videos from my old Windows pc to my new iMac, the picture speed has doubled but the sound is normal.

I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ38 HD camera and have lots of hd movie clips stored on my old Windows Pc using Photofun software supplied by Panasonic, which I want to transfer to my new Imac computer.   I am able to copy my most recent movies that are still on the memory card from my camera onto Imovie and view them with no problems at all.  When it comes to copying my old existing hd movies stored on my Windows Pc (and which are no longer stored on a memory card), I discover that when I view them on the Imovie, the speed has doubled but the sound is normal.   In order to transfer my old movies I have copied them back  onto a memory card (SDHC - the same card as previously used) and then put the card back into my camera and then copied them onto my Imac via the camera USB.   I have also used a card reader but get the same result.     If I view the same movie through my camera, or look at it on my old pc, it plays at normal speed.    Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening please?

have you read and watch the Tutorials..? :
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#imovie
iM is a bit.. iffy, when it comes to the definition, what a 'camera' is. historically, only tape based machines were a movie-camera. nowadays still-cams allow movin' images too..
but, as mentioned above: the intended workflow is: material from photo cameras (even when they move) => import via iPhoto; material from video cameras (even when they don't move.. ) => iMovie
when the import is done, you'll notice in all iLife apps the 'media browser' - in iM09, on the very right, the icon with a camera on.. click it, presto, all (incl. your 'videos') your iPhoto Library at hand for usage in iMovie.

    Hi Iolenslooker,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
It's possible you may need to replace the shortcut to Aperture that is on your Dock. I would suggest first closing both applications.  Then open Finder, and in the Applications folder, double click on the Aperture application.  If the Aperture launches, then you can delete the shortcut from the dock, and create a new one by dragging the Aperture icon from the Applications folder to the dock.  The article below will explain more:
    Mac Basics: The Dock
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2474
To remove an item from the Dock, drag its icon an inch or more off the Dock and wait a couple seconds, then release; the icon will disappear in a poof of smoke.
Don't worry, you aren't permanently removing the item from your computer; you simply got rid of its Dock icon. If you want that item back in the Dock, locate the application, file, or folder in the Finder (or with Spotlight), and drag it back into the Dock.
    Cheers,
