New catalogue?

I have had LR for 2.5 years and have almost 170,000 images in my one and only catalogue. Everything seems to be running just fine. I am trying to decide whether it would be wise to open a new catalogue entitled 2011 and place all photos starting Jan 1 into the new catalogue. Is this a logical plan or is it unnecessary? What are the pros and cons of creating this new catalogue based on the year and, if this is a good idea, should I do this annually thereafter?

I would advise against creating a new catalog.
Why? Because it's so very practical to have all your images in one catalog. That's why we have LR. Different catalogs in LR is similar to have your images in Bridge in different folders - to find an image you have to remember where it is located.
Whatever method you chose for separating your images in different catalogs, many images will not fit neatly in one or the other category. So, either you have to put them in more than one catalog, or you "force" them into one. But months/years down the line, when you try to find a certain image, will you remember in which catalog you put it? I often remember that I took a certain image, but when? 2004? 2005? Hmmm.
If you want to order your images by years - and I can see only one valid reason for it, namely when you go back to a certain place and photograph it again and again in different years  - do it within one-and-the same catalog and separate your images by folders, collections, keywords.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • Export Folders as a New Catalogue

    Hi,
I have a catalogue with all of my photos. I now want to take three folders out of that catalogue and creat a new catalogue with them. When I choose the three folders in Library and choose Export this folder as a new Catalogue, it will only export one folder of the three chosen.
If I create a new catalogue and import the files from their original location, they lose the keywords, etc.
How can I creat this new catalogue without losing my keywords, etc.?
    Thank you,
    Gloria

Is this still an extant problem?

  • New Catalogue from selected images in other Catalogues

    Hi Guys,
I have several Catalogues in Lightroom 2.5. I would like to select several images from each Catalogue and put them into a new Catalogue.
The reason – In each Catalogue I have flagged the images that I want to print. I want to create a new Catalogue with only the flagged images from the other Catalogues in order to do a contact print or multi images on one sheet of paper.
I know that I could create one Master Catalogue, select the flagged images and then print but I would like to just have a Print Catalogue that I could add images to, from other Catalogues.
Its there a way to do this ?
    Thanks for your help.
    John

In each catalogue, select the images and select File > Export as Catalogue. When you're finished, create a new catalogue, and then use File > Import as Catalog for each of the exported ones.
When you're finished doing all this, do put some time aside to think what else you could have done with all the time you've just used up. With a single master catalogue, you would already have been admiring your prints and having a coffee, with your feet up on the desk too.

  • Implementation of new catalogue

    Hi,
We have the requirement of implementing new catalogue in the lines of catalogue like HP catalogue.
We are using the SRM version 3.0 nad SAP 4.7C.
Is there any documentation available where in I will come to know the sequence of steps involved in the creation/implementation of new catalogue.

    Hello Ramchadra,
    In addition to Masa,
If you want to configure the SRM-MDM Catalog then you can refer the SAP Note - 1057316 - SRM-MDM Catalog 2.0 - Installation & Configuration. Also refer the SRM-MDM Catalog Business scenario Guide which is avialable on SMP.

  • LR 3 move/copy image to a new catalogue

I need to move/copy images from the master catalogue to a new catalogue. when I select the image and in File/export LR asks for a catalogue name and then proceeds to copy the entire folder I am in.  How do I copy JUST ONE image? the instructions on the help don't do anygood becuase it indicates options which don't show up.

Thank you, but the problem arises from the LR Help file..What I really want to do is to create a new catalogue of selected images. The Help file says exactly what I want to do BUT:
    Export as Catalog
"You can export one or multiple photos as a new catalog.
To export individual images into a new catalog, they
must first be selected. Then, from the File menu, choose Export as Catalog. Also, if
you press Option or Alt, you’ll see the standard Import and Export buttons (bottom
left, Library) change to Import Catalog and Export Catalog; see Figure 9–14.
In the resulting dialog box you must type a name for the new catalog. A folder
will be created using that name. Inside the folder will be the catalog and preview
package, using the same base name. In the Export as Catalog window you also
    have the following options:
Export selected photos only: when this is checked, only selected photos will be
exported to the new catalog. Otherwise, all photos from the currently selected source
will go into the new catalog. A text display above the checkboxes indicates this.
    Figure 9-14
    373
    ADVANCED TECHNIQUES
9 Export negative files: in this case, “negative” simply means the image files on disk.
When this is checked, Lightroom will make copies of the files and the new catalog
will link to those files, not the originals. If this is left unchecked, the new catalog
will remain linked to the original files on disk.
Include available previews: when this option is checked, Lightroom will also copy
the previews from the old preview package into the new one.
You can also export entire collections and folders as catalogs. Right-click or
Ctrl+click the folder or collection and from the popup menu select “Export [folder
or collection] as catalog”. For the export, you will have the same options described
    above.
    Export catalogs to share them
Exporting catalogs is a great way to share work between different people, multiple
    computers, etc."
Nothing likes this actually appears. So what to do??

  • Lightroom 5.2 - catogue is corrupt and wont save a new catalogue

Got the <Unexpected error opening catalogue> dialog when starting Lightroom 5.2.  Will not allow me to save a new catalogue. Deleted old catalogue thinking that might prompt Lightroom to create a new catalogue or allow me to create and save a new one. Create Folder with New Catalogue allows me to enter a new catalogue name but then Select Catalogue dialog box is empty. Program wont open!

Update - I deleted Ligtroom 5.2 and reinstalled 5. Undeleted my previously deleted catalogue and it now everything seems to work. The catalogue contains about 200 images or so when I briefly started Lightroom 5.2 for the very first time a few days ago. So whats the problem with 5.2? Do I dare upgrading again?
I am a Lightroom newbie so these first impressions are very disappointing. I have spent 4+ hours on this - I previously used Elements from V3 to V10 with absolutely no problems.
Any ideas would be welcome. Is this a bug in 5.2 or was i just unluckly with a random instal error?
Absolutely underwhelmed by the response to date. How do I get official Adobe help or does it not exist?

  • Have I lost my Collections? LR3 insisted that I install a new Catalogue....

....but when I did everything had moved back in time to March, 2010. I'm a daily user of LR3 version 2 and have no idea why I was prompted to install a new Catalogue, but I wasn't given a choice. I was able to re-import all the post-March, 2010 folders but the Collections have disappeared.
    Any thoughts?

You will have moved your existing catalogue - that's why LR "insisted" on creating a new catalogue. Look through your folders for that catalogue, or restore it from your backup.

  • When should I start a new catalogue?

I have 21,000 images on an external hard drive that is now fill.  I am adding a new external drive.  I am using Lightroom 4.1.  Is it better to start a new catalogue or should I continue with my exsisting catalogue and just load the photos to a new location?

    hundin06-
i think it really depends on the user like Rikk Flohr said above.

  • HELP! I opened a new catalogue (LR)

HELP! I opened a new catalogue (LR) & saved files into a collection set & then sent them over as a catalogue to Shoot Dot Edit to be edited. When I got the files back I opened them up a brand new catalogue (SDE) & managed to locate all the edited files in there as per the usual & did my usual tweaks.  However I so stupidly changed the file names of the original photos in the first (LR) catalogue & now the new (SDE) catalogue with the edited photos cannot locate it's originals...I'm so desperate as I dont want to have to edit 350 images again!!!  HELP!!

The file should be in your recently used catalog list (File, Open Recent).
If not then use your operating system to search for all files with the "lrcat" suffix.
Failing those we might need to know the LR version and your OS.

  • Iprocurement - new catalogue

    Hi all,
Is there a way I can add a new custom catalog table for iprocurement? Have a new requirement but not sure how it should be done. Thanks.
    I am running, EBS v12,

    Hi,
We are creating a new catalogue in our SRM version 4.0. We are stuck in getting the correct unit of measurement. Currently in the description field, the dimension/quantity is sent as OCI parameter.
Now, the new catalogue technical team wants a new Key/field to be passed in the OCI parameters for this requirement. How can we add the new key/field/parameter in the existing OCI parameters?
In a nut shell, How to maintain the OCI parameters? Can we maintain any customised fields here?
Any feed back will be of great help.
    Thanks and regards,

  • New Catalogue for 2008

After seeing 2007 as a "learning curve" for Adobe Lightroom, I would like to start 2008 with a "clean slate" and intend to start with a new catalogue for my work in 2008. I have read so many opinions of the "ideal" way to set lightroom up, database on different drives to raw files, dedicated hard drives for processed files etc etc. I run a Dual core pentium with 2 gigs ram, 2 internal hard drives, 1 c drive for system and raw images, another for processed files and a number of external drives that images are backed up to after submitted to clients. Its not "cutting edge" but not "stone age" either, and I'm a bit dissapointed at performance. Essentially what I'm asking is, is there a "ideal" way to configure Lightroom 1.3 given my setup? I have also read that there is a problem with nVidea Desktop manager and I should uninstall it. Is that correct and if so, how?
Apart from issues mentioned above, I noticed when I explored the System Info in the Help toolbar in Lightroom I noticed that Ram Available to lightroom was 712mb as against the 2gb installed on machine. Is that correct or should I somehow allocate more ram to Lightroom, if so, how"?
Kind regards and a regards for the new year.
    Kevin Wright

You do not need to uninstall the
    b nView
Desktop Manager. Just disable the features by clicking the Disable button. If at a later date you require some of the features click on the Enable box. (Bring up the dialog by R-clicking the nVidea settings icon on the Windows task manager and choosing nView desktop Manager > nView Properties.)
Finally I would not be particularly fussed as to having the Lr database on a physical drive separate from your photos. Just make sure you have fast drives. Organizing your directory structure for photos is more important.

  • Should I create a new catalogue ?

    Hi there,
I saw some youtube seminar from some top guru in Lightroom. I remember his advise was not to create a multiple catalogue and always stick to one catalogue.
I intend to follow his advice but I am now face with this problem below:
My 20TB Drobo 5D external harddisk which I usually uesed for Video editing will be getting full soon. I realise that it's getting filled up so fast because for the last many months, I have been putting timelapse raw photos into the Drobo 5D. All these timelapse raw fotos are catalogued in Lightroom
So, now I intend to moved all these raw timelpase photos into another harddisk so as to free the space in the Drobo 5D. I believe once I moved the raw timelapse fotos from 5D to a new harddisk, will the catalogue be all messed up ?
So what shall I do now ?
Thank you and appreciate the advice of experts here.
    Thanks again

    dj_paige wrote:
Let me give you the opposite advice. Keep everything in one catalog. There are rarely benefits to multiple catalogs. If you want all photos, time-lapse photos and videos of a particular subject, and they're spread out across two catalogs, you can't retrieve them easily using multiple catalogs. In one catalog, this is a simple search.
    ONE CATALOG ONLY.
You can move photos and videos to another hard drive without messing up the catalog by following these instructions: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
Thanks dj_paige for your advice which is the same as the guru i saw in the youtube.
I read the link you gave me twice. The author is suggesting we copy the files in a new disk. That means now we have two identical folders at two different disks. This is a good precaution against corrupt files. But surely, after when you load Lightroom, it will be able to locate the files ... which is why I don't understand the section about ? folders and ! files and then do a locate ... Surely the ? and I would not come out since we are copying he same files over to another disk. (remember the author said we delete only when we are satisfied the files in the new disk are not corrupted ?)
Sorry, I am a bit confused about the link. Thanks

  • Lost my crop settings with new catalogue.

I did have all my images in one catalogue but have now split them into a catalogue for each year. At the same time I created the new ones on a different disk drive to the images themselves as this seemed like a sensible thing to do and I have more free space on that disk.
Basically it went as I expected but in Develop I have now lost my user defined Crop ratios. As far as I can tell that is the only settings I have lost. Develope pre-sets and print sizes all seem to be there. I can soon put them back but just out of interest, can someone tell me where these settings are stored please. Also, I see my identity plate has gone. What else is catalogue specific, other than keywords which I know about?
Finally, is there anywhere to display the catalogue on screen?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

I should have added that I am using a PC with XP.
Also I know where the non-catalogue specific user settings are in C:\documants and settings\user\application data\adobe\lightroom\
    Thanks,
    Dave.

  • Creating new catalogue

Hi, I've just got a new pc with windows 7 (previously running XP), when I run lightroom 3, it asks where I want to create a catalogue and seems to want to install it on my C drive, it wont allow me to create it on my external HDD where all my previous images/folders still are. Is this correct? am I confusing library with catalogue?

Thanks for the responses. I've located the catalog file - but it seems it's located on my external HDD, which on my old pc was under a different path (i have less HDD's as moved to SATA) - so when I try to open light room on my old pc (which is no longer attached to the HDD) I get this error message (which helped me track down the catalog file)
However now when I go to that folder on my new pc and click the file I get another error
Any clues as to what to try next?
