New category in the iTunes Library
I'm not sure how video intensive anyone else is with their iTunes, but I use it for basically everything and I'm brand news to it (Dec 07'). I've come across something I've found annoying and emailed Apple's support section about it... but it's in regards to creating a 'Clips' section under the Library contents with Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Radio... in order to separate short little commercials, video game clips, videos I get in email... etc... from my actual movies like they did with TV shows. It makes sense to me, but I'm not sure how many other people are using their iTunes/iPods as a one-stop-shop like I am... I've just noticed if I have a playlist of video clips and then 3 or 4 movies, the playlist of video clips might have like 200 little clips in it and it takes forever to try and find the movie. It's a very minor thing, but functional, it just seems like it would be very useful to me... I'm curious if anyone else would.
Turn all your clips into a TV Show.... It's a bit of a drag setting the Video Kind one file at a time - create a playlist for your clips and *Get info* on the first one, select the Video Kind drop down and choose TV Show, now click next, the Video Kind drop down will still be selected. Press the cursor down button twice (I think - can't check just now) on your keyboard, click next, cursor down twice, click next, etc. Either that or hunt for a suitable script...

Can you make a new category in the movies library? I put my home movies into the "Home Videos" category. I put movies into the "Movies" category. I would like to make a new one. "Work Videos" . Is this possible?
You Cannot make a new Movie Media Kind, they are set by apple to be Movie and Home Video. However under Genre you could create a new Genre and call it whatever you want by typing in the Genre Box in the Get Info , Info page. This will then be available for future selections.
I am sure there are other ways to achieve what you want with different naming convention - it is up to you but you cannot add another Media Kind like Home Video -
I can't get my music from my Ipad onto my new laptop into the itunes library
I cannot get my music off the Ipad into the itunes libary on my new computer.
If I tick the box it says that I will loose all the music.
I did a test run on my I 5 and lost all the music.

1) From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

I have an Ipod touch and recently added new music to my Itunes library. When I sync with the library, the new music does not show up on my ipod. The sync process seems to be working and there is still plenty of space on the Ipod for new music so I'm not sure what the problem is!
What happens when you try to sync?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

I am trying to home share with my new MacBook. The music library I am wishing to share is not displaying anywhere on my new laptop under music or library. My computer is authorized and I have tried restarting itunes, etc. Any help/ideas?
Are you using the same ID for homesharing on all devices.
By the way shared libraries don't show up under either 'Music' or 'Libraries'. -
I just upgraded my mac book to 10.6.8 and downloaded the new version of itunes. When I try to open it and error message appears saying, "The iTunes Library file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder."
I have tried a few things but iTunes closes right after i click okay. Anyone know anything?Look in your Home > Music folder. There should be an iTunes folder there and it should have a number of files and folders including one called library.itl You want to guide iTunes to that file. If you don't see that file or folder then in your next post you will have to be very specific as to what you do see or how you have your iTunes set up because that's where it should be according to default settings.

I have an ipod touch 5th generation 64g . Just bought a new laptop and authorised it to use itunes library. When i try and sync my ipod it says it can't do it because there isn't enough space on my ipod to hold everything in the itunes library. I already know that i can't fit everything on my ipod but when using my old laptop i was able to choose what i wanted to sync. Now i don't seem to have the option of choosing what i can sync, it just refuses to do it as there isn't enough space. Why is this???

I built an Itunes library for my Shuffle on an old laptop which no longer boots. I have since built a new library on my main computer and want to transfer the library that is still on the Ipod to the new library so I can add some new tunes. How do I do that? Thanks!
You can't transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases on the iTunes Store Purchased page). However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your new computer, drag the files (or the folder containing the files) to the iTunes window to add them to the iTunes library. -
I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive that was connected to a PC, now I would like to connect that hard drive my new iMac and load the iTunes library onto that computer, can I do that? Looking for a solution that keeps me from re-ripping my CD collection.

I transfered music from my ipod to a new itunes library (new PC). The music plays in itunes but when I sync my ipod and try to drag songs from the itunes library to the ipod it wont load. It shows a circle with aline through it.

I just purchased a ipad 2 and have not sync it yet. I have an old pc and would like to move the itunes library account to a newer pc that I have. Can I move the library to the ipad and sync ipods to the ipad and/or move the library to the new pc?

But I must point out that leaving the iPhoto Library on the external is worth considering. Your internal drive would be better off without having to carry the photos.
When you booted with the external connected and you were asked for the library, did you try navigating to the Library in on the external drive? -
Can anyone help me with this problem. ITunes message," The iTunes library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." I have administrator account and transferred files from old PC. I downloaded new iTunes program on new PC. I synced my iPhone to new PC, no problem. I deleted old account after indicating shared files to new admin account. Can anyone help?
A belated reply, as the problems itunes has have discouraged me from using it much. If you uncheck the "read only" box, it doesn't stay that way! Next time you use it, the box comes up checked.
I'm still having that problem, even when I open iTunes as administrator.

I have a macbook pro from fall 2010. I have been using my external HD as my primary itunes folder for the past 7 yrs ( i.e it is organized by itunes default categorization, etc). However, there is some overlap between my external HD itunes folder and my comps original itunes folder (probably 20-30% of my current library's media files were already duplicated there from when i first bought the HD and transferred files to the external, however they are mostly referenced from the external now). Also there are files in the comp's itunes folder that are not on my external (probably due to organizational mishaps and podcast downloads when not connected to the external, etc). I do not know how many files this is the case for.
Recently, i decided that i wanted to consolidate all of my itunes music into one concise folder on my macbook's HD to avoid these issues going forward. I also just bought a new external which i will use to back up my comp's itunes folder once i consolidate everything to the comp. But i plan on using the itunes folder on the comp going forward or at least using the consolidate fcn to avoid these issues.
Here is my dilemma. Prior to learning of the consolidate feature today, I changed the default itunes folder in settings to the original itunes folder on the macbook and then manually dragged all of the media files from my external itunes folder to the macbook's itunes folder. There were a ton of duplicates or overlapping folders with similar artist names, so i opted to have them merge all folders where possible. After doing this, i realized the itunes library still references these files that i dragged and dropped from the external since that is where my default itunes folder used to be. At that point i then read and learned of the consolidate itunes feature which seems like the best way to do this. But i am afraid that if i consolidate my library to my macbook's itunes folder now, will it create duplicates of the 4000 + media files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder which are already in the itunes library but being referenced from the old external??
Question: Is there a way that i can make these files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder become the ones referenced by the itunes library through the consolidate feature without creating duplicates of these 4000+ files? I want to avoid having three copies of these files (two duplicates in the itunes and the originals on the external). Furthermore, is there a best way to find out which files in the macbook's itunes folder are not being included in the library after consolidating everything to the computer's HD? Then after that, what is the best way to start backing this all up to my new external, so that this overlapping issue doesnt happen again? Im assuming i just need to make sure to consolidate first when changing itunes folders going forward. Thank you. I know that was a lot to read but hopefully someone can help with this issue.In general:
- The best way to check if files are in a library is to drag the whole media folder to the library. If something was missed it will be added. If it is in the library is won't be added a second time.
- If you have a second copy of a file and iTunes does not currently list that specific file in its database then even if it is identical to one already in the database it will add it a second time. So if you have file xyz on the internal drive and the external drive and add them to iTunes you will end up with two entries for the same thing in iTunes because you really do have to copies of the files. While this can happen with two copies on a single drive, it will almost definitely be the case when you have a copy of a file on two drives because iTunes really sees them as two different things.
-Unless you know how iTunes works, avoid moving files yourself. Let the consolidate feature do all the file moving. Manually moving files can really mess up iTunes unless you know what you are doing and have iTunes set to not try to do it itself.
- There's no clean and easy way to delete duplicates. The best thing is to change practice so you don't create them. Here are references:

I have followed the Apple Support Section Article HT 4527 and have moved itunes media onto an external Hard Drive. The complete file is 103GB in size.
I have downloaded the latest itunes onto my new PC.
When I follow the article and try moving the itunes file onto the new PC, I am informed that there is insufficient space on my new PC.
In any case, like my old system, I want to leave my music on the external HDD and just have the music library displayed in itunes when I click on the "Music" folder.
How can I get itunes on the new computer to interogate my external HDD to just list the library and leave the music on the external HDD?you can do this by keeping the external hard drive connected and doing the following
-hold shift key down on computer while opening iTunes and a prompt will appear to choose a library
-select choose library, iTunes should bring up your explorer windows where you can search for the external HD
-after you find the external HD find the iTunes folder you just copied to it
-after opening the iTunes folder look for the file that says iTunes library.itl or if you can't see that extenstion just look for a document looking thing in the iTunes folder that shows up as a database file
-double click the database file and boom iTunes should load your library without having to copy it to the computer
PS: do make sure that if you are going to do it this way, make sure that the external HD is connected at all times, because if you don't then you will get exclamation marks next to your iTunes songs
double PS: if you are unsure how to find out if the iTunes library file is a database file just right click it and choose properties and under the type it should say database file
