New Cinema Display

got a new display a couple of weeks ago and it keeps making intermittent clicking/crackling sounds... anyone else having this problem?

Just guessing...
I'll bet the glossy display only options we see from the new MBP's and the new 24" foretell the future pretty much, and it's because they are greener than what can be done with a matte screen. Making Apple product environmentally friendly is a big push at the company. That is the reason Apple is turning to them I'll wager. We should to support them in this effort I think.
That said, a 23" full screen pixel for pixel HD playback with an MXO makes real sense for a lot of us.
I have a 23" in my own system, and have used many of the 20" displays. There is definitely an improvement in work flow because of the extra pixels, full screen playback notwithstanding. My favorite setup is 2 23" displays. I've never worked with the other displays mentioned here, but because of who posts about them, I'll bet they are very nice indeed. However a glossy display is every bit as nice or better as a matte as long as you can control the light. In most fixed situations, it is controllable I'd think.

  • New Cinema Displays on an (old) G4-867???

Hi. I have a PPCG4 867 MHz (OS 10.4.8, 512MB RAM) with factory installed NVIDIA GeForce2 MX with TwinView display card. I'd like to upgrade to a new cinema display, either a single 23" or dual 20" setup. I do not do heavy graphics or gaming, but just would like a bit more screen real estate. Three questions:
    1) Will my current system support the 23" as a simple plugnplay?
    2) Will my current system support the dual 20" as a simple plugnplay (I'm not sure what the nomenclature "TwinView" implies), or do I need to purchase a different graphics card? If the latter, any specific suggestions?
    3) Any other ideas that I should consider?
    Thank you!

Yes, if you have done the firmware update
    <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/nvidiafcodeflasher.html>
For the new 23" you will need the ADC to DVI adapter

    2) Will my current system support the dual 20" as a
simple plugnplay (I'm not sure what the nomenclature
"TwinView" implies), or do I need to purchase a
different graphics card? If the latter, any specific
    suggestions?
No. Your card has one digital (ADC) and one analog (VGA) port. Apple displays are digital only. "TwinView" means both ports can be used at the same time. You would need a graphics card with two digital ports to run two 20" Apple displays. There are no new cards suitable for your G4 (the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac Edition 256MB does not work in many older G4s). You may be able to find a used board, such as the NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX Ti, or get a non-Apple display with a VGA input.

  • Since connecting my new Cinema display, I can't open Final Cut Express because I don says Quartz extreme, Since connecting my new Cinema display, I can't open Final Cut Express because I don says Quartz extreme

Since connecting my new Cinema display to my new Mac Pro, I can't open Final Cut Express.  I get the message that I need Quartz Extreme to use it.  How come it isn't in my brand new computer or monitor??  I could use FCE fine with an old monitor.  HELP!

I finally called Apple support on Monday (couldn't on Sunday - it surprised me that they don't have 24/7 phone support).  Tech had no idea, so put me onto a 'supertech' (in America?).  He instructed me to reset the whole computer - turn it off, unplug it and then hold down 4 keys while it rebooted.  That worked.  I can now open Final Cut Express and iMovie.  There's no reference to 'Quartz Extreme' in my 'About This Mac' display info, but I don't care, everything works now, hooray!  (Now if I can only get my Mac mouse to work properly...)

  • Some bad news about the dust issue occuring with new cinema displays

Hi. Just wanted to share what I went through today. I received a new cinema display for Christmas (early gift exchange with my gf) and was very shocked when I hooked it up to my MacBook Pro and noticed a long piece of dust under the glass (resembled a short piece of string). Once I confirmed it was under the glass, I packed up the display and brought it to the Apple Store in midtown. The Apple reps at the store were friendly and understanding and gave me no problems with an in store exchange request (the original display was purchased online). Upon receiving my second display, I hooked it up in the store to make sure there were no issues. Guess what...DOA. The Apple reps were shocked and slightly embarrassed and went to the back to get me another display. Once display #3 was brought out, we unpacked it and hooked it up to make sure everything looks alright. As soon as we turned on, 1 dead pixel and multiple pieces of dust behind the glass (5-6 dust particles). Once again, the reps say the dust issue is not acceptable and they go into the back to get display #4. Repeat routine and guess what...even MORE dust this time. Close to 9-10 particles throughout the monitor. Unbelievable! I ended up clearing out their stock so we had to leave the store empty handed (gift card equal to the amount of the display for future purchase).
So what to do now? The manager and staff were very friendly and helpful and told me I could call in next week to see if they replenished their stock yet. Once replenished, the manager will check the monitor I am going to purchase prior to me stopping by the store so I don't waste another trip. I have a feeling this issue will be ongoing until it is addressed by Apple but we shall see. I really want this monitor for my new MacBook Pro so hopefully this will get sorted soon.
Anyone else have this problem? Anyone purchase a good display?

I'm glad there are others out there who are also seeing this stuff. My local apple store manager was more concerned about her stores sales rather than making the swap and getting me a new one. They held one after I was on the phone with them for 45 minutes, and this process required me to call back the next day again to make sure it was put on hold because even though they were closed, she couldnt place it on hold. Then, this monitor had dust behind it, and they were out of stock and were very unhelpful. I contacted apple and they have since been shipping me a new monitor. The first one came two days ago, cluster of 4 stuck green pixels noticeable on a black background, backlight issues, and there was some dust.
I've said it before and will again, Apple you make great great stuff, but the displays are going down in quality. I've had iphones, new MBP's, and now cinema displays with dust under the glass. I dont know if they feel that most people don't catch this, and this is worth the price of doing busisness, however, its a shame to waste my time in hopes of getting one eventually that is perfect.
Everyone who I talk to at aplcare is very nice and helpful. It just seems a huge waste of money for them to keep shipping monitors out with this issue when they are ultimately spending more to let me win the lottery so to speak in getting a display that doesnt have issues.
Hopefully apple will see these posts and escalate them. Because I am bout to drop another 6,000 on a 2nd macbook pro and the new imacs when they release, and I pray that I dont have these issues. I would love to know who the vendor is, because they have been very sloppy lately.
Maybe I could get a job at apple working quality assurance? That would be a dream job, playing with all thier new product and doing something useful, and getting paid.......

  • New cinema display on Mac Pro monitor keeps turning off/going dark. Support told me a keyboard shortcut (something like option R L)... I'd appreciate it if anyone knows it. I had this problem when i 1st bought it 2 months ago.

My new cinema display fro mac pro just went dark. When I 1st bought it, the display wouldn't turn on.I called support and they gave me a keyboard shortcut - something like Option+R+L - that you held down for 2 restart cycles. Then it magically turned on. I can't remember the sequence and I'm afraid to guess! I'd appreciate if anyone knows the trick. I'm also wondering if I should bring this display back...

Cassandra from Apple Support ROCKS!!!! She's a supervisor somewhere and should have a raise. Pleasant, smart and professional with a customer who wouldn't take "I don't know" for an answer.
If your cinema display goes dark:
    1. shut down computer
    2. restart
    3. immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously for a few minutes (seems forever)
    4. keep holding keys for 2 startup cycles
    5. release and go back to work if you're lucky to have a restored screen

  • New Cinema Displays compatible with MBP 17 inch Core 2 Duo?

Hi, I want one of the new Cinema Displays to act as external monitor for my 4 year old Macbook Pro 17 inch Core 2 Duo. Is there a dongle adaptor yet that will connect the display's Mini DisplayPort with my computer's Dual Link DVI? Or am I SOL.?
    Thanks

A component such as this one can be used to connect that display to a DVI port.

  • Kitten + New Cinema Display = need cord replacement :(

Well, my cat chewed through the USB cord that is part of the set of three cords that comes out of the beautiful new LED Cinema Display that I bought. Not the nicest morning surprise. I will be covering the cords or shutting the cat out of the office from now on. In the meantime, the USB cord is no longer functional. Fortunately, the power cord and the Mini Display port cord are fine. I am able to plug my keyboard directly in to my MacBook Pro, and use the display that way.
My question is this: Since I rather expect that either the power or the Mini Display port or both could end up fraying, getting chewed, not working, etc. - are there replacement options for these? Really, I'd like to have the USB cord working, too - so if it's an easy thing, I would like to get the cable replaced now. I am very worried that I will lose $800 worth of equipment because of a need to have a new cable. (The cable doesn't appear to be removable - does anyone know?)
    Thanks for your help.

Apple could replace the cable, but it won't be cheap. Find a local computer repair store and see if they can cut the end off a new USB cable and splice it on to the display's cable. There are only four wires in the USB part, and if they use shrink tubing over the splice, it shouldn't look too ugly.

  • What is causing a sound problem with new Cinema Display 27 ?

My new 27 Cinema Display intermittently won't play sound when connected to my MB Pro. Restarting the computer doesn't fix it, and all the display audio settings are correct etc. Phoned Apple Support and the fix was to unplug the power from the back of the cinema display to reset the screen controller. This keeps happening - is this a software bug ? Hardware problem ? Is it fixable or something that is a legacy of the 24 inch cinema display problems ? I really like the screen size but don't want a display that I keep having to plug/unplug in order to watch hulu, play itunes etc. Apple won't declare my screen to be defective even though this has happened a few times but can't tell me how to fix the problem either. Am going to send it back for a refund - don't know whether a different display will have the same problem or if this is a generic cinema display defect. Thanks for any insight.

There are threads in this forum and MacRumors where numerous people are having this issue. When I contacted support they had me reload the software update and reset the power. I am encouraging everyone to contact Apple every time it happens so we can get a fix for the problem. It is the general consensus that this is a software issue that can be corrected if we can get Apple to work on it. I agree with you I expect my $1000 monitor to work properly all the time.

  • New LED Cinema Display calibration

Will there be any hardware or software differences necessary between the calibration of the currrent LCD models and the new LED model?

I can say that I am using the same old Eye One calibrator on a CRT, a Cinema Display (CCFL LCD), and a MacBook Pro (LED LCD), so I guess calibrating the new Cinema Display LED LCD should not be a big deal.

  • MBP with New Apple LED Cinema Display

Does anyone know whether it will be possible to use an early-2008 MacBook Pro with the new Apple LED Cinema Display? I know that the new display is made specifically for the latest MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air with the mini-display port, but I wondered whether there will be some type of adapter offered so that an older MacBook Pro may be used with the new display (or whether this is even possible).
    Any input is appreciated.

  • I have a 27" Flat Panel Cinema Display with a failed LED panel. How much would this cost to get fixed?

Just wondering if it's worth it to get fixed, or if I should just save my money for a new one. It is currently out of warranty. Any information would be great!

Save your money.  The repair costs will be the same as buying a brand new Cinema Display.  Dell sells the same IPS display with different connectors, but they include a 3 year warranty.

  • Cinema display with mac book pro 15" using bootcamp

Hi all, thank you in advance for answering my question. I just got a new mac book pro 15inch with the new cinema display, i am gonna use bootcamp to install windows vista, y question is will i still be able to use the cinema display when i am in windows system? thank you

I have the same set up, but I must be doing something wrong, because when I set up the monitor to mirror the laptop the 24" LED screen is blurry and bright. When I have it set up as dual view the 24" LED screen looks good, yet, I have to drag everything over to the larger screen.
How do I set it up as primary screen? Or make mirror screen work?
    Thanks!!!
