New Clips at Every Scene Break

whenever i upload video from my DV video camera, the whole video comes out in one clip. i set the preference to make it make new clips at each scene break but it still doesnt work. i was wondering if maybe i need to update imovie by getting ilife or something.
thank you

So it would seem no one has a real solid answer as to why this happens? Not trying to be argumentative, but I meet all of your aforementioned 'requirements' for scene clipping and it still doesn't work for me. BACKGROUND: The first experience(s) I had with iMHD6 was with my friend's Sony camcorder (it's gone now so model no. unknown), and I made movies/DVD's, from their DV camera, for them. Yada yada...my point being is that I clicked 'Import' in iMovie and the scenes were all automatically clipped on their Sony. Fast-forward a few months later (no pun intended) and they replaced their Sony with a Canon ZR830 (DV tape-based camcorder). Now, both the Sony & Canon cameras are mid-range and nothing fancy. The Canon camera (the date/time and time zone were all set correctly) imports all 56 minutes of the tape in one chunk; no scene splitting! This stinks for me cuz I have to go through and manually cut the segments up. So my Q is...is there anything else I can check in the camera to see if this can be remedied? Can you guys confirm that scene-splitting is simply just time/date based i.e. there is a gap greater than 30 seconds between two frames? Because that doesn't seem to be the case here when the Canon camera's time/date are set properly. Is it possible that this camera is NOT time-stamping the video? I'm thinking this might be my problem. Thoughts?
PS. I hope this makes sense...I've been working all day and my brain is dead, blah...trying to drink coffee to wake up.

  • Where is the import option for "Start a new clip at each scene break" in iMovie 2013?

I am currently in the process of importing several mini-DV tapes via firewire into iMovie 2013. I have the most recent version of iMovie and am using a Sony Handycam to facilitate the transfer. The problem I am having is that when I hit import, iMovie splits what is supposed to be a single scene into multiple scenes ranging anywhere from a second to 5 minutes. I am left with several scene chunks that I cannot combine into one. I did a little research and found that iMovie is probably deinterlacing my scenes as it mistakes them for multiple scene breaks. In the older iMovie options, all I had to do was to go to "Preferences" -> "Import" -> then deselect "Start a new clip at each scene break". However, this option doesn't appear to be available in iMovie 2013. Is there a way I can force iMovie 2013 to import a single scene from my mini-DV camcorder without breaking it into multiple clips? Thanks!

1st : this is the wrong forum, this is iMovie for ipod/iphone and ipad ( iOS is the OSX mobile Operating System )
2nd : iMovie 11 is the current OSX version.  iMovie 06 was the last of its kind, all newer, including iMovie 09 have complete new workflow, so functions of 06 are gone and have replaced with others.

  • How to make FCE make a clip at every scene break?

My video seemed to be imported straight as one big continuous clip instead of a clip at every scene break.
    How do i do this?
Has it got to do with the configuration of the video camera itself?

You use the DV Start/Stop feature, then use Make Subclips.
There is info already on the forum.
It works by using the start/stop points on your tape. If the clock (on the camera) was not working or the battery was flat then start/stop wont't work either.

  • Automatic new clip at each scene break iMovie08

I wish to import a completed movie into iMovie08 and share it. Unfortunately iMovie starts a new clip whenever there is a change in the time code. Then to make things worse it appears to sort the clips into time code order. I wish to import the whole movie as one clip as the movie has already been edited etc and is complete. As in iMovie HD is there an option which allows you to stop iMovie08 splitting the movie into separate clips.

Thanks for your response. I did resolve the problem by capturing the video with Final Cut Express then exporting to QT and then to iMovie08 which to my mind was a long winded way of doing it. I have since discovered that I could also have capture the video on QT thus leaving out Final Cut Express.
Perhaps it is not possible to do what I wanted todo and that was using iMovie08 for a seamless result.
    Thanks again

  • Can't stop "Start new clip at each scene break"

I have gone to Preferences/import and unchecked the box TWICE, yet when I start importing it invariably ends the clip at 19:54:06 then stops importing. If I click IMPORT again, it brings in another 19:54:06.
What do i have to do so it will import without stopping?

Hi minutemantechs - welcome to the forum!
This is not a limitation imposed by iMovie. Check your external drive's format - it must be Mac OS Extended. Yours is probably formatted for PCs. Note that re-formatting will clear everything stored on the drive. re-format via Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.

  • Can't set clip length to scene break

iMovie 08 default seems to be set to 5 second clips, I'm used to, and prefer, the old way of a new clip when the recording has been paused. iMovie help tells me I can do this in preferences>import>select start new clip at scene break. But when I select preferences I get a completely different pane with display timecodes, show date ranges....,use large font......,plus lots more, but no where is option to set clips to scene breaks.
(just noticed our mac models need updating, following alocal storm and lightning strike the induced emf in the wired network damaged every piece of kit on our home network, so we're on silver iMacs running tiger now courtesy of the insurance company, oh, and we've gone wireless)

when the video is taken into iMovie from the camera it appears in the space next to the event library list in 5 second chunks, i've found the slider that that changes the 5seconds to something else. (these are the thumbnails?)I used help to see if I could set preferences to show clips as single continuous (no pause) recordings, (one thumbnail) help says yes can do this by selecting "start a new clip at each scene break" in iMovie preferences>import. When I go to iMovie preferences the pane content is nothing like help says it is, the"start new clip etc" option is not shown. My question was really why cant I find the options that help says are available.
I think your answer tells me whats going on. I guess there is an iMovie update that help hasn't caught up with, I can see that by setting the slider to its extreme right setting I get a single thumbnail for a continuous record run on the video, and given a blank space between two thumbnails where the camera paused or was turned off gives me the information I'm looking for. I guess if my first import had included pauses I'd have seen the gaps and figured it out and not confused myself by going into help.
    thanks

  • Time Lapse import creates new clip for every frame!

I shot a time lapse film - five hours reduced to 4 minutes ie one frame every 4 seconds. The iMovie Import wizard created a separate 'Clip' for every frame, (which is unusable), and then crashes the program every time I try to open it, I guess because there are too many 'Clips' to handle.
Is there a way to import these discontinuous shots as a single clip? If iMovie can't do it, any ideas on a better way? I couldn't get Quicktime Pro to do any better - it opened thousands of separate windows on the desktop.
Fortunately, the original is on DV, though each frame has a different time stamp on it.
    Thanks for any ideas!

    FYI
I found that iMovie 6 was able to handle the multiple files and I could export them as an MPEG4 file. iMovie 08 bombed big time.

  • During Import, scene breaks are not starting new clip.

Imovie HD: When importing from my camcorder (Mini DV) scene breaks are not starting new clips. The video is going into one clip which I then have to manually split each scene into individual clips before editing.
My preferences are set to: Import/Start a new clip at each scene break=ON..
The last time I used Imovie4, this same thing occurred. Prior to that, in Imovie4, it worked as advertised.
Could it be my camera settings?? Panasonic PV-DV910

    Problem solved.
I normally do not have the date and time displayed in the camera's viewfinder. So, I didn't realize that the date/time had been reset to 1998 and not active. After setting to date/time to the present, NEW recording - when imported - was being split into individual clips at the scene breaks.
However the previously recorded video would not.
My punishment for my lapse is to manually do the "split". But I am a much wiser videographer.

  • Start New clip a scene break

I am importing HD footage into IMovie HD I have selected start new clip at scene break but all it does is import as one huge file and does not start a new clip at each scene break. I know the importing has to be done at 1/4 speed because of my older mac G4. Is this the reason it does not start a new clip at scene break? Is there another setting besides in preferences I need to adjust?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
And there is no sceen-detection program in the Mac environment at all to my knowledge.
Rumour says that there is such a program on the PC-platform. But how this is done
and how many clips that a panoramic (panning) recording would split up into is
    a bit of my curiosity.
    No Not in iMovie
    Not in FinalCut Express
Not in FinalCut Pro 6 (Studio 2 bundle)

  • Video clips not starting at scene breaks

When exporting to iMovie5, video clips did not start at each scene break. I checked Preferences and "start a new clip at each scene break" was activated. In "Help" it suggested I reset the time on the camera. It had the correct date, but was off by 1 hour. I reset the camera time and test exported a portion of the original video, but still not breaking at the different scenes. I do have 4 very large clips, and will proceed by "splitting at the playhead", but this is onerous and not conducive to effective editing. Any other steps I may take to get clips out of the existing video?

Sorry for not responding earlier, away until now. The video I imported into iMovie was straight from the camera. Shot as normal with each individual scene recorded. More than one scene may or may not have been shot in any given sequence, before the camera was shut-down. Each scene would have had its individual timecode, but they were not recognized by iMovie. I had 4-clips when there should have been over 100. The camera is a Canon, digital video camcorder (Optura) and imported via firewire. It's a mystery.

  • New Scene Break

When logging and capturing, is there a way to make new clips for every time that the scene changes in the tape? Or do I have to capture one entire 1 hour long clip and break it up into all of the different scenes?

  • FCP not making new clip on timecode break

I want FCP to make a new clip every time I start/stop recording...
I have "make new clip" set on timecode break in the User Prefs...
Why is it not making new clips?

Becuase it doesn't do things like iMovie... and there shouldn't be a TC break everytime you pause the camera. If there is one though, FCP will create a new clip there if the preference for this is set in the user prefs.
BUT there is a way to get the long captures broken down into subclips and they act much the same as clips in iMovie.
Capture a tape. Select the clip in the Browser, and then from the Mark menu, select "DV Start/Stop Detect. FCP finds all camera cuts and puts a marker there. You can rename them anything you want, select a marker and drag it to a bin, and it creates a subclip containing only the material from that marker to the next. This only works with DV=25 formats... miniDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO...

  • On timecode break:  Make new clip NOT WORKING

My footage was recorded on a Sony Z1U in HDV, my deck is a Sony HVR-M10U, computer is a Dual 2ghz with 10.4.11 install and I am working in Final Cut Pro 6.0.2.
I have selected create new clip on time code break. When the tape gets to a timecode break, the deck just stutters. It can never get through the first timecode break.
I have about 50 tapes that need to be log and captured and I would really like to figure this out.
    Thanks in advance.

I have had this problem with Sony consumer HDV cameras.
You can research this discussion list to find the specific answers to this problem but basically when capturing HDV (unlike capturing SD) footage a timecode break will result in either a "Stream Error" or time code break. In either case the capture stops.
Why this happens is beyond me--in my case is seems to be intermittent and correlated with solar sunspots.
One work around is to use an Easy Setup choice called "non-controllable device". Search your FCP PDF manual and it will explain where it can be found and how it is used.
Have you tried to fix the usual suspects: clean your camera recording heads, use new tapes, lots of prayer?

  • Start a new scene at scene break doesnt work

I'm using iMovie HD and when I import footage, a new scene/clip doesn't start up. I've checked and unchecked the prefrence, quit iMovie and I still can't get a new clip to start from where I hit pause record on the camera.
    Thanks

"..your saying set the date and time on the camera and the scene break will work.."
It will work for any new footage shot AFTER you've set the time and date, because the camcorder will then write a new time & date on every new scene.
However, that won't magically fix anything shot BEFORE the time and date were set. So it won't fix old footage, but it'll stop the problem from happening in future.

    1. Why don't you purchase it from Apple? I'd be wary with eBay sellers - and, after all, Apple posts their stuff everywhere, even if you live in a country without a localized Apple store webpage or local (physical) Apple stores.
    2. when it comes to adapters / cables like these, NEVER purchase ANYTHING non-Apple-manufactured! Most of the cheap(er) knock-offs don't work! That is, don't try to save on going for a cheaper alternative - it most likely won't work.
