New Color Cartridge-- prints B&W

I have the HP Deskjet D1420.... I just bought a tri-color ink cartridge-- my printer holds both a black one, and a tri-color one. I have BOTH cartridges in. I installed the tri-color one as I usually do, aligned it, and my printer still only prints in black and white. I changed my printing options to color numerous times in Microsoft Word, I restarted my computer, I even removed the black cartridge completely... which it printed nothing but blank paper. I need the color for school stuff. I need help please.

  • LaserJet 2605dn washed out colors with new color cartridges

I loaded the 3 new color cartridges, the black still has ink.  Now when I print, the colors are washed out .  I calibrated color and ran the cleaning utility.  Strangely, the demo print page with the bright blue and orange looks just fine.  I investigated further and found that printing from Adobe is okay.  So it looks like I only have the problem when I'm printing from MS Office applications.  Any ideas?  It was working fine yesterday, before the toner change.

    Hi Thomas,
With my iP8500 I leave it on, so it appears to be specifically the behavior of the Pro9000. I did a little more testing last night as I recently re-calibrated my system, and have another method you can try. Instead of turning off "Black Point Compensation" which can leave photos with lots of shadow detail a bit too dark, open up the "Printer Settings" window and go to the color management options. The only thing you can change here is the brightness setting. Change it from Normal to Dark, leaving BPC turned on. I think you'll be pleased with the results. Good luck!

  • New Color Cartridge Won't Print

Hidy! This is my office printer, and it cannot be replaced because of strange budget rules so I HOPE we can get it fixed. I went through every troubleshooting thing imaginable. When I print a test page (where you open and close the lid four times), it prints in color. When I print from the troubleshooter to re-align or clean, it prints in color. When I print from ANY program, and I've tried Word, Adobe PDF Files, internet pages through Firefox, everything, it only prints in Black, as if Grayscale is on (which, I look in every single Printer Dialogue Screen just to be sure, it is NOT on. Is there another place I could be missing? I've unplugged, removed, restarted, to no avail. This is just...odd. I know sometimes it will just stop working, but the fact that it's working from the HP software has me stumped. Please help!!! I was SO close to having my print jobs done!

    Hi @knmcnulty
Running the Print and Scan Doctor might help. The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps to quickly resolve common printing, scanning and connectivity issues including but not limited to:
    Connectivity:
USB: Verifies that the USB connection from your computer to the HP product is working correctly.
Network: Verifies that the network connection between your computer and your network is working correctly.
Device Status Test: Checks for device errors such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, and paper feed issues, and then provides instructions for fixing the error.
Driver Check: Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
Device Manager: Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
Device Online: Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
Print Queue: Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).
Port Match: Checks the port settings for the HP product.
Device Conflicts: Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
Ink Issues: Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
Print Settings: Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.
Test Print: Prints a test page for print quality evaluation, and provides options for cleaning and aligning the printhead if necessary.
Scan Tests: Checks the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.
Source:Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows
Click here to download and run the Print and Scan Doctor> >>>>> www.hp.com/go/tools
If that does not resolve the issue, post back and let me know if there are any symbols other than green check marks and what they are next to of course. The wrench is not always easy to spot as the wrench and the check mart are in the green circle.
If you see only green check marks (), the tool did not find any problems.
If you see green wrenches (), the utility identified an issue and corrected it automatically.
If you see yellow exclamation points (), the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
If you see a red X (), follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
    If the issue persists, you might also consider removing the driver from the Server Properties and then re-adding it again;
    1. In the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder
    2. Choose ‘Print server properties’.
Win XP – With no printer selected, click ‘File’ then ‘Server Properties’.
Windows Vista – With no printer selected, press ‘Alt’ then click ‘File’ then ‘Server Properties’.
Windows 7/8 and 8.1 – Select any printer in the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder and click ‘Print Server properties’ above.
    3. Click on the ‘Drivers’ tab at the top of ‘Print server properties’ window
    4. Choose the printer you want to uninstall and click ‘Remove’
    5. Choose 'Remove driver only'
    6. The next screen will give a warning, letting you know that deleting the driver package will remove it from the system. Click ‘Yes’ to say that you are sure you want to do this.
If documents are stuck in the print spooler, you may see an error, cancel any documents pending in the print queue, or try restarting the print spooler, then try to remove the driver from ‘Print server properties’ again. If it still won’t remove the package, restarting the computer and the printer should resolve this ‘in use’ error and allow the driver to be removed.
After the driver is removed, open Start > All Programs > HP folder > Printer folder > HP Setup and Software (or the printer icon).
The Setup and software screen will open and you can click on Connect a new printer.
Thanks, I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Deskjet 9800 doesn't recognize new color cartridge

When my Deskjet 9800 printer reported that the color cartrridge was out of ink and I replaced it several months ago, I put in a replacement cartridge (#97) from a new package that I had in reserve.  The printer failed to recognize it, continuing to report that there was a problem (left print cartridge light blinks, power light on).   I figured the replacement might have been faulty, and tried another new cartridge.  Same result.  I put one of these cartridges that it rejected in another printer I have (a Deskjet 6840) and except for not being willing or able to tell me the ink level in that (because it was moved from one printer to another?) it worked fine in that printer.  I have tried at least three new HP ink cartridges, including a freshly purchased one with an expiration date two years in the future, and I get the same result from the 9800 printer.
Unfortunately, the "top open" sensor in the 6840 broke so now it thinks the top is open all the time and I can't print with it, either.
The tape on the cartridge has always been removed before installation, I have tried "hard resets" several times, and I have tried cleaning the contacts in the cartridge holder and on the cartridges (which don't look like they have any stuff on them, and which I never handle)
    Questions:
    1) is there anything else that might explain this behavior that might be fixed, either by me or by some repair service?
    2) is it possible to get repair parts or repair service for the 6840 printer, or is this now junk?

    Hi Monteverdi,
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ .

  • Brand new color cartridges won't work.

I recently replaced all my ink cartridges (3 color and 1 black) in my Photosmart 6510. The printer status shows full ink on all cartridges, but it will not print in color. Everything prints black, or just a blank sheet of paper. I have tried re-installing the cartridges, turning off the printer, unplugging the printer. I get an error message when I try "aligining the cartridges".

    Hello kimchamard,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Photosmart 6510 will not print color ink. I will do my best to assist you! Please follow this entire HP document on Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems.
Try printing a print quality diagnostic page to verify if this comes out with color or not. If not, please try cleaning the printhead which should improve the quality.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Re: Not printing black ink after new ink cartridge installed (HP Officejet Pro (edited)

Well 1 to 2 years later I have the exact same problem described by the posters with my OfficeJet 4020.  My black printing started to deteriorate as the cartridge went empty, put in the same HP cartridges I have been buying at Costco since I bought the printer there 2 years ago, first new black cartridge printed poorly then just started to come out blank as described above.  Put in second new cartridge  Also ran all the cleaning and alignment tests and functions. no improvement and no malfunction found. While doing this I used up the three color cartridges which printed okay, it was just the black. Even went out and bought a third new cartridge from Staples to make sure the Costco ones weren't just bad.  This HP replaced a Canon that lasted for ages and it's a problem already.
Did anyone ever find a solution to the HP black cartridge blank printing problem?

What is the model of your printer - there is not an Officejet 4020 that I can find.  Is your model an Officejet 4620?  If so I suggest you call HP support regardless of warranty as described in the post here.  If you are in the US call 1-800-HPINVENt, elsewhere see the contact information here.

  • Officejet 7110 won't print black only with empty color cartridges

There is a similar thread on this for the Officejet 6700, but I wanted to put it out there for the Officejet 7110 too.
When one of the color cartridges is getting LOW on ink, you start getting error messages for black and white printing. A prompt asks you if you want to print in just black ink, even though you have set all the settings in the dialog to black ink only. Strange, but at least you can keep printing in black ink only. Until...
When one of the color cartridges becomes EMPTY, you get totally cut off from printing in black ink only! You will be allowed to print NOTHING until you put in a new color cartridge!
I don't actually need to print color on this printer. I use it for half size check plots of engineerings drawings. Why on Earth would I need color cartridges to print black ink only checkplots? This is a total scam by HP to milk every last penny from the consumer.

I signed up for this forum just so I could respond to this thread.
After looking for an HP email address for support (that was also a joke), turns out its not simply a printer setting you can disable.
We also purchased this OfficeJet 7110 printer for strict use of black at the office.
Years and years of everyone saying, "Don't buy HP products, stop buying HP products, HP products are inferior." - to rephrase nicely.
Thought I would give it a shot, right out of the box the alignment was screwed up and took about 8 hours to fix and reprint the testing sheet (further sapping the colour cartridges). Now I can't even print in black. This nonsense about mixing colour to create a more true black, that's the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Let me print in gray if the ink quality you supply is so terrible.
Will not buy another HP product again, and I will joint he hoard of many who will spread the good word.
To put it bluntly; HP - get your **shhit-frawking-bleep** together.

  • New TriColor Cartridges not printing blue

I use #60 TriColor and #60 Black cartridges in my HP Deskjet F4235 All in One printer.  It has been an excellent printer.  I put in a new tricolor cartridege a week ago and it did not seem to have any blue ink.  Never had this to happen.  But,  lo and behold, I put in a xecond new color cartridge today and the same thing is happening - no blue.  (Pictures are faded out yellow.)  Is this a cartridge problem or do I have a mal-functioning printer problem?   Thanks for any help you can give me.  Paula in Texas

I would suggest gently blotting the printhead against a damp tissue.  A good cartridge would give a strong blot of cyan, magenta and yellow.  If the cyan is only a weak smudge or missing completely the cartridge is the issue (likely).
Is the cartridge an original HP or a reman/refill?  The HP cartridges have a warranty as described in the document here.  Refill/reman cartridges have generally poor reliability, see the study here for information: http://www.buyerslab.com/products/samples/HP-Inkjet-Cartridges-vs-Refilled-Cartridges.pdf

  • Photosmart C4640 installing new ink cartridges

In the past, I typically install the multi package (both black and color) into the machine when it runs out.  Once, I installed only the color cartridge (because the black cartridge still had plenty of ink in it) and the printer would not accept the new color cartridge.  So I took out the full black cartridge and installed a new color and black cartridge and then I was able to proceed with my printing.  My question is.....is that normal to have to replace BOTH cartridges when only one needs replacing?  It would be less expensive to replace only the color cartridge....the twin package of color and black usually runs about $40.00!!!!  Is there an alternative to $40.00 a pop!?  I use my printer alot.
    This question was solved.

    Hi @ted48,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you were unable to continue printing unless you replaced both cartridges instead of one with your HP Photosmart c4640. I am sorry to hear that, but I am happy to look into this for you!
This is definitely not normal for this printer, for you to have to replace both cartridges. It is a possible sign of a hardware issue.
In the meantime, I would recommend this guide, A 'Cartridge Problem,' 'Cartridge Failed,' or 'Incompatible Cartridge' Error Message Displays on the....

  • Officejet 7410 shows "Remove and check color cartridge" on display.

I have removed and checked the Color Cartridge and replaced it.  No change.
I carefully cleaned the cartridge contacts with distilled water. Still no change.
I went and bought both a new Color Cartridge (#97) and a new Black Cartridge (#96).
Installed the new Color Cartridge. Still no change.
Tried changing the Black Cartridge as well. Still no change.
I carefully cleaned the cartridge contacts and printer contacts for both of the cartridges with distilled water. STILL no change.
So, after spending close to $100, I still can't use the printer.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I know this thread has been around a while, but I figured out a solution last night when I had the exact same "Check color cartridge" error message stuck on my HP7410. I found someone else online with a different problem on a different HP printer, who used a very similar repair procedure as listed here, but with one extra step. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried it and it worked, though you have to reenter the current date/time and your network info, because it wiped out the memory and went back to factory settings. So...
    1) Unplug printer power cord from printer.
    2) Hold down the # and 6 key while plugging printer cord back in. Continue to hold those keys down until printer says SEMI FULL RESET (it doesn't give you any other choices, and it does NOT say SEMI-NVM (non-volative memory RESET - I don't know how to get that) so just wait til SEMI FULL RESET comes up).
    3) The printer will then turn off by itself.
    4) Turn the printer on.
    5) The printer will want you to set language, but don't do it yet.
    6) Press the * and # key at same time.
    7) Press 124. You will see "UNDERWARE: and a series of letters and numbers."
    8) Press the right arrow to scroll through all the possible system setting categories once, and hit OK.
    9) Scroll through them again to set the language, change the day/time and re-enter your network settings (network name/ID and password) and I suppose anything else you need to do, like set fax settings.
It's possible you may need to power off and power on again between steps 8 and 9 - sorry, can't remember if I tried that but I don't want to do this again and risk messing anything up.

  • Need new ink jet printer for Mac G4 with classic

I've searching for a new color inkjet printer for my G4 with Classic and have found only 1 by Epson, the R800. However, I'm getting different answers from various techs. One said I just need to get a print server. A tech at Epson says it probably won't work for my classic mode if the OS 9 software is booted up with an OS 10 driver. I don't know the answer to this or exactly what it means!!! Most of my printing would be done with OS 9 software. I have been using an HP laser printer and an HP color inkjet on all 3 of my networked Macs with no problem. Can anyone tell me if the Epson R800 will work? Thanks, Ann C

I don't have it, but the specification page says
    +Windows 98SE/2000/Me/XP, Mac 8.6-9.2, OSX 10.1.3 or later+
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&in foType=Specs&oid=37472319&category=Products
Plus, there is a driver for Mac OS 9 available for download here
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid= 30501&prodoid=37472319&infoType=Downloads&platform=All
So I see no reason why it would not work.

Hi - A couple of things to try:
    - Unplug the power from the back of the printer.
    - Open the top cover, and slide the carriage to the center.
    - Remove the cartridge and try reinstalling.  Make sure the ink cartridge snaps in and is firmly held by the carriage.
    - Plug the power cord back into the printer and power it on.
If that doesn't work, try repeating the steps above, but this time, remove the USB cable, which will completely isolate the printer and narrow down the issue.
    Hope that helps.
