New Color Cartridge Won't Print

Hidy! This is my office printer, and it cannot be replaced because of strange budget rules so I HOPE we can get it fixed. I went through every troubleshooting thing imaginable. When I print a test page (where you open and close the lid four times), it prints in color. When I print from the troubleshooter to re-align or clean, it prints in color. When I print from ANY program, and I've tried Word, Adobe PDF Files, internet pages through Firefox, everything, it only prints in Black, as if Grayscale is on (which, I look in every single Printer Dialogue Screen just to be sure, it is NOT on. Is there another place I could be missing? I've unplugged, removed, restarted, to no avail. This is just...odd. I know sometimes it will just stop working, but the fact that it's working from the HP software has me stumped. Please help!!! I was SO close to having my print jobs done!

Hi @knmcnulty
Running the Print and Scan Doctor might help. The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps to quickly resolve common printing, scanning and connectivity issues including but not limited to:
Connectivity:
USB: Verifies that the USB connection from your computer to the HP product is working correctly.
Network: Verifies that the network connection between your computer and your network is working correctly.
Device Status Test: Checks for device errors such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, and paper feed issues, and then provides instructions for fixing the error.
Driver Check: Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
Device Manager: Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
Device Online: Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
Print Queue: Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).
Port Match: Checks the port settings for the HP product.
Device Conflicts: Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
Ink Issues: Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
Print Settings: Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.
Test Print: Prints a test page for print quality evaluation, and provides options for cleaning and aligning the printhead if necessary.
Scan Tests: Checks the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.
Source:Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows
Click here to download and run the Print and Scan Doctor> >>>>> www.hp.com/go/tools
If that does not resolve the issue, post back and let me know if there are any symbols other than green check marks and what they are next to of course. The wrench is not always easy to spot as the wrench and the check mart are in the green circle.
If you see only green check marks (), the tool did not find any problems.
If you see green wrenches (), the utility identified an issue and corrected it automatically.
If you see yellow exclamation points (), the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
If you see a red X (), follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
If the issue persists, you might also consider removing the driver from the Server Properties and then re-adding it again;
1. In the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder
2. Choose ‘Print server properties’.
Win XP – With no printer selected, click ‘File’ then ‘Server Properties’.
Windows Vista – With no printer selected, press ‘Alt’ then click ‘File’ then ‘Server Properties’.
Windows 7/8 and 8.1 – Select any printer in the ‘Devices and Printers’ folder and click ‘Print Server properties’ above.
3. Click on the ‘Drivers’ tab at the top of ‘Print server properties’ window
4. Choose the printer you want to uninstall and click ‘Remove’
5. Choose 'Remove driver only'
6. The next screen will give a warning, letting you know that deleting the driver package will remove it from the system. Click ‘Yes’ to say that you are sure you want to do this.
If documents are stuck in the print spooler, you may see an error, cancel any documents pending in the print queue, or try restarting the print spooler, then try to remove the driver from ‘Print server properties’ again. If it still won’t remove the package, restarting the computer and the printer should resolve this ‘in use’ error and allow the driver to be removed.
After the driver is removed, open Start > All Programs > HP folder > Printer folder > HP Setup and Software (or the printer icon).
The Setup and software screen will open and you can click on Connect a new printer.
Thanks, I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • 5520 New black cartridge won't print

Just installed a new HP 564xl black cartridge in my 5520 and it will not print anything in black? Shows that it has a full black cartridge? I've run diagnostics and cleaned and alignged and still nothing in black, only color?

Hi - A couple of things you can try.  First, follow the steps in this document - at least solution 3 since you've already replaced the cartridge.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, try following the steps, beginning with solution 3 in this document, which will walk you through resetting the printer and cleaning the contacts - even though it is a new cartridge.
    Hope that helps.

  • Brand new color cartridges won't work.

I recently replaced all my ink cartridges (3 color and 1 black) in my Photosmart 6510. The printer status shows full ink on all cartridges, but it will not print in color. Everything prints black, or just a blank sheet of paper. I have tried re-installing the cartridges, turning off the printer, unplugging the printer. I get an error message when I try "aligining the cartridges".

    Hello kimchamard,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Photosmart 6510 will not print color ink. I will do my best to assist you! Please follow this entire HP document on Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems.
Try printing a print quality diagnostic page to verify if this comes out with color or not. If not, please try cleaning the printhead which should improve the quality.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
    Have a great night!

  • C6380 two cartridges won't print

Photosmart C6380.  OEM cartridges.  Tried to print a picture but it came out pink and black.  Software said all color cartridges were low (I don't believe this) so I replaced all four color cartridges with new HP cartridges.  Still prints everything pink.  Ran self-test, the cyan and yellow blocks are blank.  Attempted printer head cleaning but it failed.  Test pages stop printing after the letters and the pink blocks.
    Thanks.

    Hi Ciara,
I ordered part number CN643A as you recommended ($29.44 plus $11.25 S&H), and it arrived today.  I eagerly followed the directions, cleaned the contacts on the printer, opened the package, carefully inserted the new printhead, and started re-installing the cartridges.  This is when I first noticed that the new printhead only has four spaces for cartridges, three color and one black!  No space for photo black!  I tried installing the cartridges but it would not accept the 564XL regular black cartridge.  Obviously this printhead is for a different model.
I went to HP's parts ordering site and entered my serial number, no printhead came up in the list of available parts.
I guess I will call the 800 number on the invoice and see whether I can exchange this for the right printhead, if it is available.  If not and they won't take it back, I am disinclined to spend another $40 for another new printhead, the $80 I would have spent just on the printhead replacement could have been spent toward a new printer that works.
[Bob, I had already ordered the new printhead before receiving your advice.  I will continue to pursue the new printhead option for now, but will keep your advice in mind as a last resort.  Thanks.]

  • LaserJet 2605dn washed out colors with new color cartridges

I loaded the 3 new color cartridges, the black still has ink.  Now when I print, the colors are washed out .  I calibrated color and ran the cleaning utility.  Strangely, the demo print page with the bright blue and orange looks just fine.  I investigated further and found that printing from Adobe is okay.  So it looks like I only have the problem when I'm printing from MS Office applications.  Any ideas?  It was working fine yesterday, before the toner change.

    Hi Thomas,
With my iP8500 I leave it on, so it appears to be specifically the behavior of the Pro9000. I did a little more testing last night as I recently re-calibrated my system, and have another method you can try. Instead of turning off "Black Point Compensation" which can leave photos with lots of shadow detail a bit too dark, open up the "Printer Settings" window and go to the color management options. The only thing you can change here is the brightness setting. Change it from Normal to Dark, leaving BPC turned on. I think you'll be pleased with the results. Good luck!

  • Hp 99 Photo Color cartridge won't fit h470

I purchased an H470 mobile printer.
In addition to the regular ink cartridges (Color 95 and Black 98)  I also got the photo ink cartridges recommended (Gray 100 and Photo Color 99). The #100 cartridge fits fine, but the Color Ink Cartridge 99 will NOT fit, yet The package lists the H470 as a compatible printer for this cartridge.
Comparing the tops, the ridges at the top of the 99 Photo Color Cartridge are different from the 95. I feared breaking the thin plastic lever and stopped trying to install the cartridge.
    What do I do now?

Here is some additional information from a previous post I wrote that explains the choices for color, photo and photo gray cartridges.
This can be simple or complicated depending on your threshold for "best" photo's.  I will describe the various cartridges and their uses, then suggest a few options.
The 98 cartridge is pigmented black ink.  It is used for printing text and some plain paper of inkjet paper graphics.  It is not compatible with glossy photo paper and is not used for printing on these media.  This will be the best choice for printing text.
The 95 cartridge is a tri color cartridge containing cyan, magenta and yellow dye based inks.  It is suitable for printing on plain paper or photo media and can print respectable photos.  When printing graphics the 95 cartridge may be used to print black in some modes because the dot size for the 95 cartridge is smaller than the 98, so the 95 can produce better looking grayscale graphics than the 98.
The 99 cartridge is a photo cartridge and is swapped with the 98.  It contains light cyan, light magenta and photo black dye based inks.  Unlike the 95 cartridge the 99 cannot produce the full range of colors by itself, it must be used with a 95 color cartridge.  When printing photo's the 99/95 combination can give better results in light areas sugh as sky tones and faces.  The results may be less grainy than when using the 95 cartridge by itself.  While the 99 can be used to print text it will be a poor choice as the dye based ink is not as good on plain paper for printing text.
The 100 is a photo cartridge  and is swapped with the 98.  It contains dye based black, gray and light gray inks.  The  100 cartridge can print excellent B&W prints by itself.  When used with the 95 cartridge it can provide better detail in dark areas than the 95 by itself.
So... the suitable combinations would be as follows.  I would suggest printing the same photo with different combinations to see if you find a difference or advantage for a particular application.
98/95  Best for text, best for all around printing.  Best on plain paper.  Respectable for photo's on photo paper.  Unless you print a photo using one of the other combinations and compare side by side you may think they are perfectly fine.  Most economical
99/95  Best for photo printing on photo paper.  Less graininess than the 98/95 combination, this will be most noticeable in light areas such as facial or sky tones.  Can be used for plain paper printing but not really optimum for this.
100/95  Best for B&W photo printing on photo paper or enhancing color prints.  May be better detail then the 98/95 or 99/95 combination, especially in dark areas.
I have some 99 and 100 cartridges but rarely use then as I find the 98/95 combination to be suitable for my casual photo printing needs.  I do notice a difference in photos put side by side from the different options, but given any one of them standalone it would look fine without a "better" option to compare with.

  • New black cartriges, very poor page output, new cartridge, won't print black

Purchased 3 pack of XL black (not color) cartridges. First one had very low page output, just died in the middle of ink showing available. Next cartridge had wiggle down the page. Some print would be jogged with the font. Vertical lines looked like bricks jogged. Next cartridge had wiggle but ran till out of ink, almost normal output, new single purchase of cartridge replaced. Went dry this AM purchased another one within an hour and there is no output period from this one.
Very VERY expensive to operate, very low output. Three pack was wasted $'s, threw more than 1/2 away.

The document here has troubleshooting steps that may help resolve black not printing on your Photosmart c309.  Be sure to check the vents, if they are blocked the supply will only give about 20-30% of the ink before it fades out when printing.  If the above does not resolve the problem the post here may help.

  • Hp Photosmart 1215 color cartridge will not print.

    I have a photosmart 1215.
The color quit printing so I purchased a new print cartridge
    hp c6578d
and that cartridge would not print.
I performed all the cleaning procedures as set forth on this site.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Did you remove the protective tape from the cartridge?
Is there any trace of color on the printed page?  If not try gently blotting the nozzles on a damp tissue.  Does this leave a strong stripe of cyan, magenta and yellow on the tissue?  If not then you have a defective cartridge.  If there are no stripes of color on the tissue then the cartridge is defective.  If there are stripes of color on the tissue but no color prints on the test page or cleaning pages then the printer will likely require service.

  • Check print cartridge - won't print

I have an HP1317. I have just replaced the black cartridge so it should work fine but just get 'check print cartridge message'. I've taken both out several times and put back. I've turned off power and re-booted. I've tried everythin I can think of but still message appears. H E L P!

    Hello @paulhoward,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you are having a problem with your PSC 1317 accepting the new ink cartridge.
    I would like to help.
The following document should help with your issue.
    Check Print Cartridge Light Blinking
You have already completed steps 1-3, so I am posting step 4-5.
Step 4: Clean the problem cartridge contactsIf the light is still blinking, clean the electrical contacts by the procedure below:
Gather the following items to clean the cartridge and print carriage:
Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available.
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper with the nozzle plate facing up. NOTE:Try to clean the contacts quickly enough that the cartridge is not outside of the printer for more than 30 minutes. The ink can dry and clog the nozzles if the cartridge is outside of the printer for too long.
    Unplug the printer.
Dip a swab in the clean water, then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should only be slightly damp.
Clean the print cartridge contacts. The illustration below shows these contacts. Avoid touching the nozzles.
Figure : Clean the print cartridge contacts
Clean the contacts in the print carriage, inside the printer. The illustration below shows the carriage and the contacts.
Wait ten minutes to allow the cartridge to dry, then reinstall the cartridge, plug the printer back in, and close the cartridge access door.
    Figure : Print carriage
Figure : Clean the gold-colored contacts in the print carriage
Step 5: Repeat reseating and cleaning steps
If the print cartridge light keeps flashing, repeat steps 3 and 4 above.
Step six is to replace the ink cartridge or call HP.

  • HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Won't Print PDF Files

I recently encountered a problem where my HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction would not print PDF files.  I tried printing from Preview, Adobe Reader, Word and PDF Pen Pro and the document would not print.  But the printer had no problem printing other formats such as JPG, DOCX etc. from the same computer both before and after.
What happened is that the computer indicated it sent the document to the printer and the printer screen showed "Printing Document" momentarily - but then the the printer screen would return to the Ready screen and the document would not print.  There were not indications that the printer was having a problem.
I reinstalled the HP drivers - no change.
Finally I was able to print the document by opening in Photoshop and saving it as a JPG.

    Hi 5teve,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand you are unable to print PDF documents.
I will be happy to help you.
Check the driver name. If it shows HP Laserjet CM1415 - Airprint it would be the Apple driver.
Delete it and add the new driver in for just the HP Laserjet CM1415. You might have to click on the drop down to select it from the list.
Here is a screen shot for a example. Different printer showing though.

  • Color cartridges used when printing black only

    Hi HP
We have had  a 6600 printer for about 13 months.
The color cartridges are used up when only printing black only
Recently we replaced all three colors cartridges - week before thanksgiving - 2014 and the cayan and yellow
cartridges are totally empty - the black cartridge is full and the printer does not let us print.
we did not print in color at all.
    what can be done?
    Please advise
    Thanks

    Hello SteveKowaliw,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you have some concerns about the colour ink cartridge usage.
I am going to give you a document that will assist when you Cannot Print When One of the HP Ink Cartridges is Empty.
I am also going to point out one section of the document so you have a better understanding on how the printer works.
"The printers listed in this document cannot print when an ink cartridge is empty even though the other ink cartridges have ink.
Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. A little ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature".
    Thank you for your time.

  • Deskjet 9800 doesn't recognize new color cartridge

When my Deskjet 9800 printer reported that the color cartrridge was out of ink and I replaced it several months ago, I put in a replacement cartridge (#97) from a new package that I had in reserve.  The printer failed to recognize it, continuing to report that there was a problem (left print cartridge light blinks, power light on).   I figured the replacement might have been faulty, and tried another new cartridge.  Same result.  I put one of these cartridges that it rejected in another printer I have (a Deskjet 6840) and except for not being willing or able to tell me the ink level in that (because it was moved from one printer to another?) it worked fine in that printer.  I have tried at least three new HP ink cartridges, including a freshly purchased one with an expiration date two years in the future, and I get the same result from the 9800 printer.
Unfortunately, the "top open" sensor in the 6840 broke so now it thinks the top is open all the time and I can't print with it, either.
The tape on the cartridge has always been removed before installation, I have tried "hard resets" several times, and I have tried cleaning the contacts in the cartridge holder and on the cartridges (which don't look like they have any stuff on them, and which I never handle)
    Questions:
    1) is there anything else that might explain this behavior that might be fixed, either by me or by some repair service?
    2) is it possible to get repair parts or repair service for the 6840 printer, or is this now junk?
