New Comp:Importing iPhoto library from other comp via TimeMachine

Hey I sold my MBP and bought a Macbook recently. I had all the stuff on my MBP backed up onto an external using TimeMachine. I got my macbook and opened iPhoto and went to import photos to library, found the iPhoto library photo on the time machine of my MBP and couldn't open it. Is there a way to import my old iPhoto library or are the pictures lost? =(
Thanks in advance!

Gary:
While in the Picture folder enter the Time Machine. Go back to the time when your iPhoto Library is shown and restore the entire library. You don't import it. This will give you your library complete with albums, keywords, titles, descriptions, slideshows, etc. intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

how can I import my iPhoto library from my old mac to my new mac?

Use the Migration Assistant, either on its own or while setting up the new computer, or move it through an external drive with a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, or over a network, or use Target Disk mode.

  • Mavericks can'i import iPhoto library from MBP

Trying to import an iPhoto library from an older MBP running Lion onto a new Mac mini, I follow instructions to upgrade the old library, so the newer version of iPhoto on the mini can see it. Downloaded the upgrader and run it but iPhoto quits. Going back to the upgrader it says that the library is already upgraded. When I attempt to open iPhoto it goes back to examining the library for a couple minutes, then quits.

What's the easiest way to do this?
Connect the clone, open the Users folder on it, and then your home folder and Pictures. Next, drag the iPhoto Library to the corresponding location on the iMac.

  • Importing iPhoto Library from Time Machine

I am trying to restore the iPhoto library from my Powerbook G4 and put it on my new Mini. I have entered Time Machine through ctrl clicking the icon and using the gear wheel, dropdown menu to "restore iPhoto Library." (long story short...the "restore" button is not highlighted in Time Machine so this is a workaround)
after I click "restore iPhoto" it asked where I want to put the folder...I am unsure where to put it. When I go to the Mini's picture folder, there is an existing iPhoto Library which is faded out.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Put it on the desktop and then when the restore is done you can check if you want to keep the one in the Pictures Folder, or merge them or whatever.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive via airport extreme base stat

I can't seem to open my iPhoto library from my external USB drive that is hooked and being shared through my airport extreme base station. If I plug the external drive directly to my mac via USB it works but not when going through the base station.
This only started happening when I upgraded from iLife'06 to iLife'08.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

That's a problem that many are posting about. Haven't read of a solution yet. Be sure to report the problem to Apple at: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Got new iMac, can't import iPhoto library from portable HDD

    Hi all,
I just bought a refurbished mid 2012 iMac.  I had kept my iPhoto library on a portable HDD.  When I tried to import the pictures I was first told the files needed to be updated for the new version of iPhoto.  It read it would take a few hours so I let it work overnight.  The next morning, none of the pictures were imported.  In iPhoto there looked like there were event boxes but no images in them.  Now the iPhoto file in my HDD is greyed out so it won't recognize it anymore.
Any ideas what to do.  Got 11 years worth of pictures on there and I don't want to have to pull out all those CDs and do the red eye correction and rotating.
    Mike

There's no importing involved in upgrading.
What format is the external disk?

  • Corrupted Photo Hides iPhoto Library from other iLife apps

I was recently using iMovie HD to create a movie for church and wanted to insert some still images given to me by the pastor. I imported the images into iPhoto, but found that iMovie reported that I needed to "Launch iPhoto 2 or later to populate this list."
I am a regular user of iPhoto 6 for my own personal needs, and have launched it dozens of times on my computer, so this puzzled me. I checked the help files and found under the article entitled "I don't see any photos in the Photos pane," which simply says that I must be using iPhoto 4 or higher and have opened iPhoto at least once, both of which are true, but I relaunched iPhoto just in case, but to no avail.
Checking to see if the problem was with iMovie, I found that I also had no access to my photos from iDVD, so the problem seems to be with iPhoto.
I also checked out Apple's support database, and found the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75491, "iLife: Cannot See iPhoto Files in Other iLife Applications." Following these instructions, including the recreation of the XML file, yielded no positive results.
After some experimenting with iPhoto/iMovie on other computers and in other accounts, I found that when I imported a particular set of pictures was when the pictures disappeared from iMovie. I tried deleting these pictures from my own main iPhoto library, but the problem was not solved. I finally found out that once the corrupted photo had been imported into iPhoto, nothing I would do would allow the iPhoto pictures to be viewable from other applications.
I eventually solved this by renaming my iPhoto library, using GraphicConverter to convert the suspect files in batch mode and importing the converted files into a new iPhoto library. This at least allowed me to get the movie finished, but I now have two iPhoto libraries on my computer, only one of which is visible to other iLife applications.
I found out that if I held down some keys while launching iPhoto, I would be given the option to rebuild the iPhoto library using four checkboxes: Rebuild small thumbnails, Rebuild all thumbnails, Rebuild Library database and recover orphaned photos. I've done all four to no effect.
So, after all of that, my final question is, is it possible to restore my iPhoto library such that I can again access it from other iLife applications without losing the many albums I've created?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

So far, no go with iPhoto Library Manager, although the program and the help files that come with it have suggested some leads.
First of all, when I open iPhoto Library Manager, it reports:
The album data file for this library is malformed.
    XML parser errors:
Encountered unexpected character k on line 59525
    Old-style plist parser error:
Malformed data byte group at line 1; invalid hex
So I opened AlbumData.xml in BBEdit and checked out line 59525 (as suggested by the iPhoto Library Manager help files) and found that it looked like this:
    <string> <key>274</key>
    Above it is the line:
    <key>771</key>
Most <key><string> pairs look like this:
    <key>XXX</key>
    <string>KeywordName</string>
So for some reason, the problem line isn't closing the string tag. I tried editing the keyword that came after the problem line, but it didn't fix the parse error. From what I can tell, manually editing the AlbumData.xml file won't solve the problem, as iPhoto only writes to it for other applications, and doesn't read it. The next time I launch iPhoto, it would simply write the same data.
I also checked for the string 771 in the file as that's the keyword ID that appears before the parse error, but it's only found in relation to an album and a roll.
Because of this, iPhoto Library Manager can't rebuild the library. However, the help files do offer the author's email address, and it's obvious that he's spent time looking into this type of problem (the help files describe exactly the problem behavior I'm having with the error message seen in iMovie). So I'm going to zip up the AlbumData.xml file and send it to him. While I do that, I may look through the keywords more closely and see if any of them look like they have suspect characters. Perhaps renaming them will solve the problem.
Of course, this keyword clue doesn't explain why importing un-keyworded photos would cause the problem in the first place, but if I can get it fixed, I'll be happy.

  • How to import iphoto library from macbook air to imac

    Hi
I have been searching the support section but have not had any luck finding an answer to this. If someone can point me in the right direction to a link for directions that would be great.
I have just returned from a holiday and have been uploading all my photos to a macbook air iphoto library.
Now that I am home I want to import that library into my existing library on my imac.
Is this possible ? and how exactly (in no techno speak please - I am still quite new to Apple).
    Thanks in advance.

Do you want to replace the iPhoto Library on the iMac with the iPhoto library on the MBA?  then simply Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
But if you want to move selected (the new) photos from the MBA to the iMac then you need iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  it is the only way to move photos between libraries without losing information
If you want the photos only without history then you can export from the MBA (see the user tip on exporting for details on the options) and then import the photos to the iMac

  • Difficulty  importing iPhoto Library from 5.04 ➠6.06

Ihave about 10,000 images that I had saved on a DVD. They were from iPhoto 5.04. When trying to import into my iPhoto 6.06 I get a message➠ 'examining photo library' Then the following statement appears: "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto Library folder. Then choose file➠get info. Make sure you have read and write permissions for the folder and apply this setting to all enclosed items."
OK. At 'get info' I do everything and it tells me, then I get a message that I do not have permission. WOW. All is entered correctly. Password and all.
Have been very frustrated over this as I had enought to back up my iPhoto Library. I have done it with other iPhoto Libraries, but this last one is creating a horror.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

    Doc:
Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
See if that will free up the library.

  • How do i access iphoto library from other apps?

I'm trying to upload a photo from iphoto to my blog through safari, but finder won't allow me to access the iphoto library. In the past the only way I've been able to do this is by dragging the photo from iphoto onto the desktop, then using the jpg from there. I have duplicate photos, which can't be right...
When I'm networked with my pc, I can click on iphoto library and up comes the years and folders inside.
Please don't tell me my pc is better than my mac...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Read Terence Devlins's treatise on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It will tell you exactly what you need.
As far as dragging to the desktop to use that is one way and then delete the file after you've uploaded it to its destination.

  • How to unload my iPhoto library from other computer's Time Machine backup?

A couple of months ago we could tell my Macbook Pro was biting the dust (bum HD) so I made sure to back it up via Time Machine onto an external hard drive. The HD then crashed and we purchased a Mac Mini in the meantime. I partitioned the external hard drive and started backing up the Mac Mini on the external. I manually pulled a few files out of the Macbook Pro backup with success, but trying to unload the iPhoto Library has been unsuccessful.
When I enter Time Machine, it only gives me options for the Mac Mini backup and I'm unable to select anything remotely related to the Macbook Pro backup. However, all of my personal photos are locking inside the iPhoto Library and I'd like to take them out! We have a wedding coming up shortly and, well, we need the classic slideshow.. I've searched many threads and tried their suggestions, but nothing is working. Please help!

  • I have copied Iphoto library from other MAC using the migration assistant, when starting Iphoto the rebuild however stops half way (no progress after 24 hours)

Using the migration assistant I copied my users from an old MAC (2007) to a brand new on. After a few attempts and software updates this worked. For Itunes and mail for example all data was available. On starting my Iphoto however there was a problem. When starting there is the message that the library, to be able to work with the new Iphoto Version, needs to be updated. In the process of doing this the programm seems to get stuck after 40 % of progress and even after 24 hours does not continue. I have tried to use the I-Photo First aid, but before starting any of the steps it wants to re-allign the old library to the new Iphoto version ans subsequently get's stuck on the same spot again !! Is there any advice you could give ?
    Thanks,
    John

    I have tha same problem.
iPhoto asks for updating, then it shows a bar about the conversion in progress, then it shows that it is working on faces library and then the circle spot stop to turn on faces library and starts in the middles of iPhoto window.
    After three days nothing changed!
    Any help?

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

You can copy your iPhoto Library to an external hard disk, USB flash drive, or other media (depending on the size of your iPhoto library). Then, you'd copy the iPhoto Library from that media to the same location on your iMac.
Using the Finder, navigate to your Home folder (or click on Go from the menu bar and click on Home). Open the Pictures folder, select your iPhoto Library and then from the menu bar choose "Edit" and then "Copy". Then navigate to your external disk, click on "Edit", and then click on "Paste".
Then, insert your media on the iMac, and copy the iPhoto Library from your external media to the same location on your iMac (the Pictures folder located under your Home folder).
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • How do I import an old iphoto library from an external hard disk while keeping my editing and organization in tact?

I am running iPhoto '08 on a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel C2D (MacBook Pro 3,1). I backed up my hard drive contents onto an external hard drive, then formatted my computer and installed Mountain Lion. I then re-installed iPhoto '08 and ran all the updates. Now, I would like to import my old library from the external disk onto my computer without losing my editing and organization; however, when I select "import to library" from iPhoto, the old iPhoto library is not a selectable option.
I know how to "show package contents" and import directly from the Original and Modified folders, but I don't want to lose my organization. Can I simply drag the content of those folders into my new Original and Modified folders? Will iPhoto read that correctly?
I tried to open the old library from the external disk, thinking to export them all to a folder and import from there, but that just opened my new library and none of the old photos were imported or available.
I'm running out of ideas and would appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!!

    You don't import it.
Just drag the iphoto Library from the external to the Pictures Folder.
    Then open it:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
