New computer help for Lightroom 4

I've ordered a new computer to edit Nikon D800 files. It has 32 gb ram, Asus motherboard, Nvidia video card 1 gb, Intel i7-2600 cpu, Intel SSD 120 gb for Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and Lightroom 4, 1 tb 7200 rpm internal hard drive for storage. Could you explain to me the best way to set up the computer and Lightroom 4 to get the most out the system without complex tech tweaks (i.e. over-clocking). I'm a novice so detailed explanations are good. Thanks for your help.

  • New computer help for a idiot

Hi I have looked on the forums for an answer but I cant seem to follow them. I get really confussed by all this stuff. Could anyone help me with this question. I have just got a new computer after the last one died and I want to get the tunes off my ipod into the new itunes. I saw that lots of you recomend a third party sysytem but what do I do first? I havent downloaded itunes yet. Do I do that then plug in the ipod or download the thrid party thing first? Could some kind and patient soul help.
    Thankyou

I would first read the directions carefully for whatever third party program you choose.
It may depend on the one you plan on using, so if you told us that, then i might be able to be more specific. But i would download itunes first, and then follow the instructions. If you plug your ipod in with itunes it will ask you to sync with the library, DO NOT do that, it will erase your ipod. but like i said you need to tell what your going to use first before i can be specific

You definitely need to resurrect the old password associated with the Apple ID you used to purchase the music.
    Go here: https://iforgot.apple.com
An email will be sent to the email address associated with that account with instructions regarding resetting that Apple ID's password.
If you no longer have access to that email, the resolution to this problem becomes considerably more difficult. In that event you would need to contact iTunes Support and explain your dilemma.

It sounds like two Apple accounts were used in the purchase of songs, yours and hers.  Assuming she won't give you her password, you're kinda stuck.  For $129 or so you can repurchase them all.
By the way, if she has the computer and it has your account info in it, you ought to change your password.

  • Help me buy a new computer suitable for Arch

    Hello all Arch users.
About 1½ years ago, a mate convinced me to try out Arch Linux. It was about the same time as I also bought myself a TFT monitor. I've grown rather fond of Arch since then, and refuse to use anything else (except at work where I have to use Windoze).
But I've also been having some eye-problems for the last year or so, and I'm blaming partly my Phillips 190S monitor, and partly backlight/brightness settings in Arch, which I have been unable to change. Last thursday these eye-problems accelerated and gave me so much trouble I was unable to use a computer or TV or even go outside for days. I can't live a life that boring! :-|  I have to be able to use my computer 25 hours a day.
I've searched a bit on the forum and found that I'm not the only one having some eye-problems with Arch. One solution apparently is to use xbacklight command, which just doesn't work on my system. I found another graphics-card which I tried, but it used the same drivers, so still no xbacklight command. Anyway, I don't want to make a big story out of it either, since I've decided to buy a new computer and monitor now. I want a low-noise system anyway, so....
The monitor will be some expensive stuff that should be very kind to the eyes, so I'm pretty sure that part can't be better. But should you have a recommendation for a great monitor that's kind to the eyes, do share.
I'm thinking that the hardware otherwise might not be compatible with Arch for reasons I'm sure I wouldn't know about. Also, I'm interested in knowing if there's any graphics-cards that suits Arch better than others. And finally, my Arch system is a little broken, and a fresh install probably isn't a bad idea. (I'm no Linux hardcore user, but I definitely know I prefer any Linux distro over Windoze).
So I decided to put down the stuff I'm thinking of getting, and maybe someone will tell me if they know of any problems with that hardware and Arch, or maybe recommend me something else.

    Samsung 250GB SATA II Harddisk
    NorthQ NQ-6803 52-in-1 Cardreader
There's no graphics-card on that list, because there's a built-in one one the motherboard, and I don't really need it for games, but rather system-development and such. But if you believe that a certain graphics-card will improve picture quality, or be more kind to the eyes, then do tell me. (I doubt it, but if you think so, lemme know).
Any other advises regarding brightness and be-kind-to-your-eyes-stuff is also welcome. So far I've installed www.sharpfonts.com, but it's too soon to say if it helps.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the answers.
I'll definitely look into that flourescent lighting thingy, although I think/thought I had enough light around me already.
I have also tried having brightness at 0, and even contrast at 0 also. Also using the nvidia settings.
Anyway, it would seem I've found one of the reasons. Apparently, for some weird reason, Arch hasn't offered me 60hz, but rather lower odd numbers such as 53hz. So I've been using a rather lower frequency, which logically should explain at least some of the reason.
While Windows lets me go as high as 75hz with this current 17" monitor I've tried instead of my 19" monitor, Arch won't even let me have 60hz. I've tried various xorg.conf settings, and even got one mailed to me which doesn't change anything. So that's two monitors I've tried where Arch doesn't deliver the hz I want, but where Windows does fine and more. That can't be right. I'm using the nvidia drivers, and have tried two graphics cards.
I'm buying a better monitor regardless though, something that's extra kind to the eyes somehow. I'm thinking 19-22" with some fancy techniques to reduce whatever it tough on the eyes. Maybe a fresh install of Arch will help getting the hz needed. I need to do that anyway on the new computer.
I also tried booting Ubuntu from a CD to check how that seemed, and while the Ubuntu desktop and fonts did seem more calm and eye-friendly, I must admit I'd been looking at it too much at that time to be sure I wasn't just kidding myself.

  • I have purchased a new computer I have Lightroom 3 disc however I purchased an upgrade to lightroom 4 online so i don't have the disc. I have the serial number for lightroom 4 but don't know how to download the programme without the dics

I have just purchased a new computer. Some time age I purchased Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 package which includes the disc. Since them I upgraded to 4 online without the disc .How do I upload without the dosc, I have the serial number for version 4 and have been using it on my old computer.

You will need both License Keys the Lightroom 4 upgrade key and the Lightroom 3 key. You can download the latest LR 4.4.1 from the site below. Just make sure you get the appropriate one for your operating system.
Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh
Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows
Install then you first enter the LR 4 upgrade serial number and then the LR 3 serial number when prompted.

    Hi Everybody-
I have a new laptop and wanted to start using it as the main computer to sync/download for my iPod touch. So I download/install the newest version of iTunes, I plug in my iPod touch and it sycs my music, but not my podsacts and other items.
Queation 1. How can I get all the items off my old computer iTunes and loaded into the new one on my laptop ????
Question 2. is it possiable to sync the full contents of the ipod touch to the new computer.
if it helps, I have authorized the new account on the new laptop, and selected sync all podcasts,,,but I got an error message regarding that it cannot sync them.
Thanks for looking and I thank you for your help.
    Sincerely- Doug

    Hi There-
Thanks for the advise, I did that option and it brought over all my apps, but still none of my podcasts. the message says that it con not sync the podcasts because it says, the podcasts selected for syncing no longer exist. I guess I'll have to re-subscribe, but I think there has to be a better way to get what I have on my iPod to iTunes,,,just like the App's and my Music.

  • Keywords not transferring with pictures on copy and paste to a new computer. In lightroom on old computer but not in lightroom on new computer? Not all pictures, but a lot of the new ones.

Keywords not transferring with pictures on copy and paste to a new computer. The keywords are in lightroom on old computer but not in lightroom on new computer? Not all pictures, but a lot of the new ones.

I actually found under  EDIT then Catalog settings / then metadata that the automatic write changes to XMP had been unchecked. Once I check this, it updated and connected all the keywords to the pictures. Now when I copy and paste the keywords show up as I can now detect them in Adobe bridge when before I couldn't see them even though they were in lightroom. . Thanks for your input.

  • New Computer Specs for CS5 Photoshop

I am in the market for a new computer. The main use for it will be my amateur photography work using Photoshop.
    Current Idea is:
    • Genuine  Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
    • Intel(R)  Core(TM) i5-750 quad-core processor [2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3  cache]
    • 12GB  DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [4 DIMMs]
    • 300GB 10K rpm  & 640GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s - two hard drives
    • 512MB ATI  Radeon HD 4350 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]
    Message was edited by: DNB224
I am wondering whether I would be better off with two 7200 RPM drives configures as raid 0.
Also is there any reason to upgrade the graphics card. The one specified is listed on the adobe website as being certified for use with PS CS5.
    Thanks for the help.

I had a bad experience with nVidia.  When I moved from XP to Vista I had a VERY expensive nVidia Quadro FX card, and I found out the hard way that they don't support older cards well at all, no matter how much you've paid.  I futzed with it for months, then bought into "the other guys", at which point I got fast, rock solid reliable Windows operation - as it turns out, for a year and a half, then another 5 months on Windows 7 with no trouble.  Lore has it ATI has better hardware too.  All I can say is it works for me, and works well.
As far as I've been able to see Photoshop works equally well with ATI as nVidia.  They use OpenGL which has been around on both platforms for a long while.  Even if Photoshop CS6 uses OpenCL ATI is right there on the forefront with nVidia.  I really like what AMD did when they bought ATI.
C: is RAID 0, on which I keep Windows and my data.  I have a 3rd non-Raid 1 TB drive as D:, left over from a prior system, on which I put the Photoshop temp file.  It's not screaming fast, but then CS5 doesn't seem to use the disk much.  I just don't see the system waiting for the disk.  Even opening huge files (I work with 1 GB .psd files in my astronomical image processing sometimes) is not slow.
Trust me, the first time you fight through a hard drive failure and spend days getting the system back in order (assuming you do backups) you'll wish you'd gone for reliability.  A terabyte is a HUGE amount of data.  Just doing backups and restorals to/from an external disk takes hours upon hours!

  • New Computer needed for Premiere Pro

I am not too tech-savvy when it comes to some computer specs, but over the years of using Adobe Premiere Pro, I have used many computers with this program, and while all of them met the system requirements, I have had problems in each instance.
I am currently using CS4 on a Dell Precision T3500, which has been pretty good so far, but now I am editing much larger projects that have extensive data and files, and now my system has slowed down to the point where I can no longer render my media without Adobe freezing up and crashing. For reference, the size of the .prproj file is 15M, and is using over 10G of media, and is freezing up on me.
A simple solution would be some sort of add-on to my system to make it work faster with preview files and can render & export quickly, but realistically I will need a better computer overall to accomplish this. Would a specific graphics card solve this problem?
If I were to start from scratch with a brand new computer from Dell.com, what would be the best OS, Processor, Memory (any noticable difference between 4G and 6G?), and anything else needed to allow Premiere Pro to function smoothly with large projects? I would like it to be cost-effective, but what's most importand is getting PPRO to work the way it is meant to for professional, high-end projects.
I don't need to dissect & learn the interworkings of my car in order to drive it. I wish the same could be said about Adobe Premiere Pro and the computer specs needed for it...
Thanks for your time and effort to help me out. Much appreciated!!
    -Rick

    Rick,
You may not need to know all the inner workings of your car to drive it, but buying a new (or used) car these days involves quite of bit of research just to understand all of the various option packages!
Let me start by completely agreeing with both wb_martin and Bill Gehrke comments, although neither is suggesting you buy a stock Dell! I know enough to build and support my own systems, but ADK indeed rocks for anyone who wants a cost effective turnkey system customized for their specific video (or audio) editing needs.
I also agree with Alex's comments and his "hybrid" recommendation regarding a Dell or HP workstation with a nVidia gamer's series GTX video card. You cannot however order those from Dell's or HP's web sites though since they normally only offer the Quadro nVidia cards on their workstation series offerings.
I will assume that you are editing DV and/or HD and not RED 4k or larger media.
Dell has systems in both their gamers line and workstation line that would work pretty well for large projects assuming you jump up to Adobe's CS5/5.5/6 software which supports use of both cpu and gpu (video card) processing to really speed up editing and renders:
    Workstation - Dell T3600
    Xeon E5-1650, 6-core, 3.2GHz (3.8 GHz turbo), Win7 Pro 64-bit, $1629 base price
    635 watt p/s $35
    32GB 1600 MHz ECC RAM $819
    Quadro 5000 2.5 GB $1309
    4TB RAID 0 $252
    Blu-ray burner $222
    TOTAL = $4266
    Gamer's Alienware Aurora
    i7-3930k factory oc'd to 4.1GHz, Win7 Pro 64-bit, $2119 base price
    32GB, 1600 MHz RAM $450
    GTX 680 2GB video card $450
    4TB RAID 0 $250
    Blu-ray burner $125
    TOTAL = $3394
The workstation option is a really solid system (like your T3500) and Dell's workstation support is pretty good.
The gamer's option is significantly less expensive and faster. I personally think that its also pretty UGLY!
IMHO Dell and HP provide very nice workstation base systems but then charge really inflated prices for memory, hard drives, optical drive upgrades, etc. So, that brings you back to a "hybrid" option if you would be up to it. That is, buy a base Dell (or HP) workstation and then add 3rd party RAM, graphics card, and hard drive(s). That will not void your warranty, but will not be a completely turnkey solution either.
BTW, HP makes a killer workstation pre-configured powerful enough to edit Red 4k. Unfortunately it costs almost $10k!
    Good luck with this adventure!

  • Ipod mini, new computer help

    hi,
I recently got a new computer, I downloaded itunes, then plugged in my ipod to get the songs on the new version. Well it would only transfer songs I got from itunes, not songs I got from my cds.
The problem is, when I transfered songs to my itunes, it took them off my ipod. So, now I have songs I purhased from itunes in my itunes library, and songs that I got from my cds on my ipod. How do I get all songs on both my ipod and in my library. Whenever I plug my ipod in to my computer, it doesn't do anything. It will recognize it, but it won't do anything with the songs, even when I tell it to sync.
I did download copy pod to get songs off my ipod and into my library, but now those songs are no longer on my ipod either, just in my library.
    Help!!
    Sam

For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • New computer ~ Help with setting up

    Hi everyone, Newbie here!
I am going to set my new computer up tomorrow. The computer I am using at present was installed and set up by someone else so this will be a great learning curve for me. Also I had Infinity installed by the engineer.
Is everything I need to install relating to my broadband available to download? What do I need altogether? I spoke to a BT chap on the phone and he said he would help by remote access. I am a bit nervous of this!
I need to ensure my computer is safe and secure and it all seems technically daunting. Norton security came with  my Microsoft Office package. Is this better than McAfee (Net Protect Plus), do I need both? What about a key code scrambler  (someone mentioned this to me). As you can see I need reassurance and help arghhhhhhh.
A step by step guide would be great!
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is best not to install any of the BT software, just connect your computer to the BT Home hub using an Ethernet cable, or by using the wireless key, if its a wireless connected computers.
    See http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14964/~/getting-started-with-wireless
Using a direct cable connection is best, if you want to get maximum speed.
I would not allow anyone remote access, but if you have no choice, and cannot resolve the issue any other way, then make sure that it is as a direct result of you ringing BT, and not some random person ringing you at home, pretending to be from BT or even Microsoft.
Many people have been caught out by that type of call, and had their computer infected with spyware.
If you already have a trial version of Norton Security, then by all means use it until it expires, then uninstall it.
After that, you have the choice of using the free Microsoft Security Essentials, which is preferred by many forum members, or using BTs Netprotect which is free with some broadband packages. This has been known to make computers run more slowly though.
    That is all you need.
If you have any problems, then please return here.
If you have any problems with BT Infinity, then please visit the Infinity board on this forum.
