New computer -how do I transfer from ipod to itunes?

I have just installed itunes on a new computer. On my ipod are hundreds of tracks but of course the newly installed itunes is currently empty. If I connect my ipod will it transfer from ipod to computer of will I lose all my tracks?

If your iPod is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

i purchased a new computer, how do i transfer all of my itunes content from the old computer to the new one with out loosing songs, apps, pics ...ect

Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer to move iTunes content.
As for pictures, copy them from where there are on the old computer to the new computer... this has nothing to do with iTunes.
Alternatively, if both computers are Windows based, use the Windows Easy File Transfer Utility to move everything.

  • Computer crashed... how do i transfer from ipod to itunes

My hard drive died and erased all my files. I did not back up my itunes and wanted to know how to transfer my files from my ipod to itunes. I have a new hard drive and downloaded itunes. When I attempted to sync my ipod, it asked about transferring purchased music only. I didn't sync it because I was scared it would wipe out all the music I transferred from my cd's. What do I do? Please help. Thanks in advance. BTW, I have a 30GB 5th generation video ipod.

  • New computer - songs will not transfer from IPOD

Ok....I know that this is probably a common issue but I have a new computer running iTunes 7 and Windows Vista. I cannot seem to transfer my existing music files from my IPOD to my iTunes 7.0. I have attempted to drag and drop, use Consolidate Library, etc. I am not automatically syncing music because I do not want to lose my entire library of music on IPOD. Can someone help?

However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 and Vista so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described for instance also it won't transfer playlists. However if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated that will let you transfer individual tracks then there are a number of third party utilities that will do what you want. You can use these to retrieve individual music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, check for Vista compatibility as they may not all have been updated yet. • HT1386 new computer, how do I transfer from Iphone to new computer itunes library?

I purchased a new computer.  Thought I backed up to Itunes before but nothing shows in music library once I log in.  How do I preserve whats on phone to itunes on new computer?

iTunes will only transfer music purchased from iTunes from the phone to your iTunes library.  Music from other sources can only be transferred from your phone to your iTunes library using 3rd pary software such as Touch Copy.  Your only other options would be to re-import this music from other sources (such as CDs) or to copy the entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one, using one of the methods outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527.

  • HT1473 My daughter has a new computer, how do we transfer her ipod music to the new laptop.  Sync seems to want to delete it all

Sorry the question was in the title.  A new laptop for christmas...I thought by downloading itunes to it when I plugged in the ipod it would just download the music to het itunes library as they are on the same apple id.  does not seem to be the case....is there an easy way or not?  It is a compaq CQ58 and has all the itunes up to date.

Connect the new iPod to the computer she used to sync with the old iPod. The restore from backup. The apps and music have to be in the iTunes library to be restored to the iPod.
For how to restore see the restoring topic of:
    iOS: How to back up
If the computer does not have her iTunes purchases they can be redownloaded by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

While that may work, it is extremely time consuming and unnecessary.
Copying the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer will keep the library intact.

I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video) that I had connected to my computer with iTunes.  That computer crashed and the only place my music is stored is on my iPod.  How do I move that music to the iTunes program (version 8) on my new computer.  When I connect my iPod to my new computer the music shows up in my iPod's music directory but I can't move it to the library.
