New computer--how to transfer library?

I want to move my library to a new computer. Is there a way to do this? I tried just syncing the ipod onto itunes on the new computer but it gives me the message that the ipod is already with another library. HELP?!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved also it was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described. Also it won't transfer playlists or videos as far as I know. However if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
TuneJack Windows Only
iPod2PC Windows Only
iGadget Windows Only
iDump Windows Only

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I have moved to a new computer and want to transfer my ipod library to the new computer. Can I do this?

    You have two options:

  • New computer-how to transfer iTunes library?

I am changing computers, and have my music on my old computer's iTunes library and my existing (good) iPod. If I sync my existing iPod to the new (blank) library I will lose my songs.
I have not yet erased the iTunes library from the old computer. Can I transfer it via the iPod? Some other way? Thank you.

    Hi Peter,
I recently changed computers myself. I did the following:
    1. I copied the entire iTunes folder (including the 2 data files as well as my music) created in 'My Music' (or wherever you told iTunes chose to set it up initially - to find out where you have stored your iTunes folder go to Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced and you will see it in the iTunes Music folder location section) onto a CD.
    2. When I got my new computer I set up the iPod software (do this first!) and then iTunes.
    3. Once I had set up iTunes I then copied all the contents of the iTunes folder on my CD including the 2 data files set up by iTunes into the new iTunes folder. When you open up iTunes all your songs will be there
Make sure you set up the iPod software on your new computer first before iTunes though. At first i didn't and loaded iTunes first, but I had problems with iTunes not recognising my iPod.
    I hope this helps!

  • New Ipod and new computer-how to transfer

I just got the new ipod video and had the 20gb. I now have a new computer and new ipod. How do I transfer my songs to my new ipod and computer?
    any help would be appreciated.
    D

If you transfer your library from the PC to the Mac, and then plug in your new ipod to the new Mac, a question will pop up asking you whether you want this computer's library to be transferred to the iPod. Click Yes, and it will start synching with whatever is in the library.
You can also use some programs, like "Senuti" (for mac, freeware) to rip off the contents FROM your iPod TO your new Mac. I personally like Senuti since it has an iTunes-like interface except in reverse.

  • New Computer:  How to transfer files including thumbnails from old computer to new.

I am getting a new computer and wish to backup my files including thumbnails
and transfer them to the new computer.  What is the best way to get all the information from the
    organizer onto the new computer?
    Thanks.

The best way is to use an external hard drive or other removable storage.
Open the Organizer and click File >>Back-Up Catalog (or Ctrl+B) and make a full back-up.
After installing the software on the new computer open the Organizer and click file >>Restore Catalog.

  • Got A New Computer - How to Transfer it all

Well I really didn't get a new computer, but I dual boot Windows XP and Windows 7. What I have always sync'd my iPhone on Windows XP but I'd like to move it to 7 now. My questions is if I move all my stuff to Windows 7 will iTunes think I'm on a whole new computer and my licenses might not transfer? Aren't licenses for movies and music for only so many computers?
    Thanks for the help guys!

More than likely it will count as two computers, which doesn't make any difference - not unless you have 4 other computers that you need or want to authorize with your iTunes account leaving you one short. You can always de-authorize an authorized computer when switching from one to another especially when you already have 5 computers authorized. If you forgot to de-authorize a computer before selling it or giving it to someone else or before an authorized computer has a failure that prevents you from using it and de-authorizing it, once you reach 5 authorized computers, you can de-authorize all followed by re-authorizing the computers you are currently using with the same iTunes account. It is 5 authorized computers for a lifetime - only 5 computers can be authorized with the same iTunes account at a time.

  • New Computer - can't transfer library

I have a new computer, the old one is out of action. Any advice I can see for synching my IPod with new computer requires access to the old on which isn't an option for me. Oddly, I can synch purchased music but not non purchased - does anyone have suggestions? Thanks, Scotlad

  • New computer, how to transfer purchased songs not on ipod?

we had to get a new computer because our old one crashed big time. luckily, i had backed up my itunes a few weeks before the big crash. but there were a few songs i purchases after backing up and never got around to updating my ipod with them. itunes has a purchase history -- is there anyway to put them back into my playlists if i haven't saved them but there's a record of my purchases?

Use the form on this page to request a free redownload, or use the Transfer Purchases feature if applicable. If neither of these works, you will need to purchase the content again to get them back; Apple needs to pay the copyright holders for each download from the iTunes Store other than podcasts, album artwork, and iPod touch/iPhone applications.

  • New Computer: How to transfer apps without losing data & in-app purchases?

I just bought a new MacBook. I've moved everything from my old PC to the MacBook, but now that I hook up my iPhone, iTunes is telling me that to sync my apps with the new MacBook will mean replacing all app data on my iPhone with data from the computer. Will this erase my data such as finished levels or high scores in game apps? More importantly, will I lose my in-app purchases? Please help! Thanks.
(I tried the Search function but could not find anything.)

Do File > Transfer Purchases. All of your in app purchases will be transferred over. It should also back up the data.

If you only copy your Files you will lose your favorites. The best Way to copy your Library to the New Computer is to Export your libery (you can find the Export in the menue). This will copy your Wohle Library on cd. If you Out in These cd's in your new Computer iTunes will copy it with all informations.
While that may work, it is extremely time consuming and unnecessary.
Copying the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer will keep the library intact.

Had to buy a new computer, how do I transfer all data from my iphone4 to new computer?

    - Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - To transfer other music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
