New computer-install Elements or copy photos first?

I will soon be getting a new computer using Windows 7 (I am currently using XP). I have all my photos and a backup of the Elements 8 catalog backed up onto an external hard drive. Should I copy all my photos from the external hard drive to the new computer first, and then install Elements 8 and restore my catalog; or should I install Elements 8 first and then copy my photos to the new computer and then restore the catalog? Or does it make no difference in which order I do this?

OK, I want to be sure I understand this. I should do the following steps in the order listed, right?:
1. Backup the Catalog on an external hard drive.
2. Install Elements 8 on the new computer
3. Restore the Catalog on the new computer using the Catalog backup on the external hard drive.
4. THEN copy all the photos (media files) to the hard drive on the new computer?
And when doing the Catalog restore, do I select New Location, Preserve existing folder structure?

Does she have any photos in the iPhoto library on her new machine?
What version of iPhoto does she have?
The general answer is to trash the iPhoto library on the new computer (assuming it is empty) and drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert the library

  • New computer Bought elements 10 have canon 3ti software what to use to upload & catalog

I'm starting with a new computer and blank slate on it. I bought Photoshop elements 10. I have that loaded. I did not load my Canon software that came with the t1i yet. I want an easy way to upload and organize my photos and not duplicate pictures or storage needed.
I used an earlier version of elements but bought this to start over. I also use an Olympus camera also and will want to upload pictures from that. With my old elements I made slide shows but they wouldn't work on others computers.
Are they stored in My pictures and elements drags them from there. Is there a link to information on this site that I can access. I just spent 2 hours last night reconnecting because I moved some pictures the wrong way, and all the numbers were off then.
I also used to put my pictures in yearly folders and use sub folders of the same for each year. Elements wouldn't let me do that. I don't know where to start and I need some help, please.

    Thanks for replying.
I am fairly tech savvy when it comes to computers, but am relatively new to using my Mac for recording/uploading video, so I appreciate all the advice I can get.
I know what you mean about the email limit: I tried toi use the "upload to email" option, and though iut halved the size of the file, they still got rejected by the recipient's filter.
One question I have: is there a way to reduce the size of the files when I initially record them?
Quicktime seems pretty easy to use, but it doesn't offer a lot of choice (or information) regarding relative file sizes for different upload/recording options.
One of the options I see is "upload to itunes". What will this do? How could I use this option to share the video?
I know I can upload to youtube to share, but I don't really want to share my videos with the world (yet), but am more interested in letting a couple of my acquaintances take a look at them first.
What would be my best way to accomplish this?
I suppose I can place them in a dropbox folder and share with my buddies, but at 200MB a pop, I may need to upgrade from my free dropbox space!

  • Transfer Catalog to new computer after I've deleted photos on old

I still use Photoshop Elements 5.0 since it does the basic things I need, although I could upgrade if necessary. My problem is that I want to transfer the CATALOG from my old XP computer to my new Win7 but I mistakenly deleted the photos (not the catalog) from my XP already! The photos are on my new computer but most of the catalog is not. Can I back up the catalog only, restore it to my new computer, and have it reconnect to the photos on my new computer? I have already seen the help articles on “Use Backup, Restore to move catalog” and “Common catalog upgrade issues”, but I don’t want to backup and restore the catalog and get everything messed up! BTW, although all the photos are on my new computer, the Win7 catalog references only August 2010 and May 2011-July 2012; the XP catalog contains references from July 2007-April 2011 (August 2010 is on both).

Hi again, Ken. Thanks for all your help with this issue. I wanted to test my various ideas before responding to your latest message.
Since I had a conglomeration of different images and captions on each computer, I defined what was where for each folder. All photos were on my new computer, some captioned many not, but most were not in a PSE catalog. Some but not all photos were on my old computer after I loaded photos from an incomplete flash drive copy, either captioned or not. I was afraid to do any backup and restores in case I messed things up further.
Since I had more complete files on my new computer, I decided to work with it instead of backing up and restoring from my old. I decided to start with my new computer to “Get Photos” from folders not in a catalog; that includes most of my photos. I tested these depending on whether or not they were captioned and whether or not they were already in the catalog. I created a matrix to determine how to handle each “type” of folder: HD only, HD captioned, PSE only, PSE captioned, and various combinations. Don’t try to parse this! I tested each type of folder to determine what I had to do for each and made notes so I can complete the job as time permits.
Soon I will perform a full backup. When I have “completed” the restoration task, I should be able to do an incremental backup and have everything on a 16GB flash drive, right?
Yes, complicated, but I have learned a LOT about working with Photoshop Elements, and your comments have helped me with that. So, thanks for your attention to my problem. I still have a bunch of work to do, but I think I know what I’m doing now. At this point I can delete all photos and catalogs from my old computer (a 2005 Dell Inspiron 6000) and give it to a friend whose computer is even older (a 1998 or older computer that is barely operational).
    Again, thanks for your help!

  • New computer: how do I retrieve photos from different Time Machine backups?

I use Time capsule to back up my iMac & my Macbook Pro. My old Macbook Pro "died" last week and right now I'm setting up my new one. I have copied the files & documents I need from my old laptop and my iMac without any problems (though it took a surprisingly long time considering the small amount of docs I copied). I have however not copied any applications or photos.
My question is: how to I retrieve photos from the different Time Machine back ups (iMac & old laptop) to my new computer without messing up? It would be especially "cool" if I could retrieve only some of the photos.
(I don't know if this has any importance, but my old Macbook Pro was & current iMac is running on Leopard and the new Macbook Pro on Snow Leopard).

Your best bet is to start over; erase the new Mac's internal HD, reinstall OSX, then use Setup Assistant to transfer your stuff.  It's the fastest and most reliable way to do it.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?, especially the green "Second Chance" box.
Otherwise, to see the backups for a different Mac, see #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  To restore selected items, see #15 there.

  • After restoring my photos in PHOTOSHOP 5.0 to new computer, cursor spins and no photos appear

I restored my photos to my new computer from an external HD. I updated to the 5.02. The problem I am having is that PS will not put these photos on screen in the Organizer. The cursor spins. I am using Windows 7, coming from XP. How  can I get my photos to appear in PS?

I presume you are talking about Photoshop Elements 5, and not "PHOTOSHOP 5.0".

  • How to import the catalogue onto a new computer in Elements 9?

I have a new computer and was using ELements 9 on the old one.  I have downloaded the programme and aslo copied the catalogue over from the old computer.  How do i import the catalogue?  When I click on Import, it doesnt mention catalogue, only Frame for Video and Wia support.
    Margaret

Thank you very much.  The only problem with this is that there is no option to “restore catalogue” in the drop down File menu in my newly downloaded PSE 9.  There is no mention of the word “catalogue”.  There is an Import option but this is only for “Frame for Video” or “WIA Support”
    With best wishes

  • Editing with photoshop elements my copy photo colors change

When I have a photo open in Aperture and I select "edit with Photo Shop Elements", Aperture makes a copy of my photo as it is opening up PSE9.  The copy photo changes.  I can look at the histogram and see they are different.  Why isn't this copy EXACTLY the same?

The file format of the newly created file (it becomes a Master) is set in Aperture Prefs.  Is it different than the file format of the existing Master?  Is there any chance the change in file format accounts for the difference you are seeing?

  • I got a new computer and want to transfer PHOTOS Is this possible?

I'v got all the photos from my old computer onto my ipod but now when I plug it into my new computer, it tells me that i can not sync 2 librarys and I have to delete the stuff on the ipod to update....does anyone know a way around this? Is it even possible? (it seams that even though I have the latest addition of itunes on both computers that I used to have an option to do this but now I cant figure it out.)
    Thanks for ANY help
ps: maybe you know a way that does not involve the ipod OR slowly up-laoding them all to the internet?

You can manually manage music like this, but not photos. You need to transfer these photos to your new computer and then sync them to your iPod from that computer.

  • New Computer Install

Several years ago I purchased Lightroom and downloaded it onto my computer at the time.  Now I have a new computer.  How do I download it onto it?  Additionally the computers in question are Macs.

Go to the following website and download the trial version of the SAME version you have been using:
Adobe - Lightroom : For Macintosh
You can activate it with the serial number that you already have. You can move your catalog and your images the new computer. If they are not in the same disk location as they were previously you might need the following:
