New Computer -- ipod wont import songs

Hi,
I had to completely rebbot and reformat my computer.
Now I have re-installed i-tunes etc.
I imported a few cds into itunes.
But now, when I plug my ipod in and it updates...it doesnt import the songs.
I never had any trouble with it before...I used to just plug in the ipod and anything new in the library would go to the ipod.
I am also asked a question something like "this ipod is linked to differnt library...do you want to replace you existing songs..."
Sounding like it will erase all stuff on ipod and replace with the few new discs I have.
Any help is great!!!
Jason

Hi Lee,
Here's the Windows ways to do this copying (that's your OS, I see):
You can't directly sync or drag music from your iPod to iTunes library. This is because iTunes' software is made for default one-way transferring of songs from your iTunes to iPod.
If your iTunes is set for "Automatic" in "Preferences -> iPod" (the default setting), connecting your iPod to iTunes now would automatically delete all the content off your iPod. This action cannot be reversed.
Instead, hold the "Shift" and "Ctrl" keys together for about 20-30 seconds as soon as your iPod displays “do not disconnect” to prevent this automatic syncing from happening.
Now, onto the transferring. There are a couple of ways to copy the songs over to your computer.
You can try the method of manually copying songs from your iPod to your computer by accessing your iPod's hard drive.
See this link for the details:
MacMuse - Transferring iPod songs to iTunes
If you would like a program to do this for you in a more automatic way, then select one you'd like to use from this list.

  • New computer, want to import songs from iPod

Can anyone help?? I recently got a new computer and I plan on giving my old one away but I need to get my music onto the new one!
I tried to "export song list" onto a flash drive but that just came up with a text file. I plugged the iPod into the new computer and it wouldn't do anything either.
    HELP!!!!!!

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • How do you transfer songs from my iPod Classic to my new computer? The only songs that transfer are those that I purchased on iTunes. Is there a 3rd party website or something?

I am trying to transfer 3000 songs from my iPod Classic to my new computer. The only songs that transfer are those that I have purchased on iTunes (242 songs). All of the music from my CD collection that I have on my iPod Classic will not transfer. What (if any) is the best 3rd party website that will assist?

Is there a way to get Itunes on my new computer to retrieve purchased songs without connecting to my old computer or using disks?

If you have those purchases on an iPod, simply dock the iPod & you will be asked if you want to sync your purchases iPod back into iTunes.

Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • I imported files from an external hard drive to Itunes on a new computer.  they imported & play fine, but the ratings & playlists are gone & i am unable to update any info.  I found a file name playlist on old drive & imported now most files are missing!

Can you locate the iTunes Library.itl file on the old drive? Ideally you would have simply copied over the entire iTunes folder structure from <User's Music> on the old computer into <User's Music> on the new one to transfer the library will all playlists, ratings, play counts etc. intact.

You are looking at the drop-down menus at the top of iTunes e.g. on a Mac :
If you are on iTunes 11 on Windows then press Alt-S and the Store menu should appear at the top.

  • How do i get my ipod to import songs from a computer that it is not registered to without losing all my current songs?

my ipod was registered to my old computer which i no longer have. I now have a new computer and would like to add songs to my ipod however when i try to import songs to my ipod i get an error message that states, "This ipod is registered to another computer." Does anyone know how i can import new songs to my ipod without losing all the songs currently on my ipod?

This really isn't an iTunes Store question and would have been better asked in the iPod classic forum, but anyway, you'll need to reformat your iPod to use it with Windows. See:

    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method I've seen posted. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.

  • New computer won't take songs from ipod, how to register new computer?

My hard drive crashed, I had to buy a new one. All my songs were on my old drive. Except for what is in my ipod. I bought a new hard drive, but haven't had the $$ to have files removed from old drive yet. Installed itunes onto new drive, plugged in Ipod and it says it will either replace all 400 songs from my pod with the 1 song in my new itunes, or it can only take itunes purchased songs from my pod, which is only about 5% of my songs on my pod at the moment. How do I register my new pod to my new harddrive??? Help!

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • New computer...transfering songs from ipod?

i just got a new computer and was wondering how to transfer my songs from my ipod to my itunes on my new computer. it seems like it should be simple but i cant figure it out! please help

Officially there is no way to transfer music from the iPod using itunes, but there are loopholes.

  • HT1391 how do i get my itunes library off ipod to new computer?  only getting songs purchased not downloaded from cds etc.

How do I get my itunes library off an ipod onto a new computer?  I am only getting songs purchased but not loaded from home cds etc.
    thanks,

" I am only getting songs purchased but not loaded from home cds etc."
That is correct.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  The ipod is not a backup device.
Copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Reinstalling iTunes to new computer; Concerned for current songs on iPod

Alright, so my last computer just died November 29th un-expectantly. (It suddenly shut down while in the middle of a conversation with a friend and wouldn't turn back on since). At first I hopped that it was possible overheating because of that week, it had been on from morning to night none stop.
Yet, it soon showed that it was completely fried.
I hadn't backed up any of my music and so everything that wasn't lost on the computer is still on my ipod. Today, my grandmother gave us one of her good computers and I am prepared to reinstall itunes to it and start over.
But I am concerned on what will happen to the 700+ songs still on my ipod when I sync it. Will I lose them when I sync my ipod and if so, is there a way to save them??

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer.
