New computer, itunes backed up on portable hard drive,  how to transfer?

I have just received a new laptop. I connected my portable hard drive on which i had backed up my itunes library from my old pc. On the new computer i used the "add folder to library" function in itunes. All the songs from my hard drive appear in the iTunes library on my new laptop, but when i try to play the songs, iTunes asks me to locate each individual song file on my portable hard drive. i have tried using the consolidate library function but this hasn't done anything. I don't want to have to "locate file" for each of the thousands of tracks i have stored on my portable hard drive.

if you want easy point and click stuff Home Sharing is pretty easy.

  • New Imac, has problem using previous portable hard drive

Been using a Seagate portable hard drive on various apple computers for 3 years. had a new one for school this year, and went to use it on our new computer. it does not recognize the hard drive, when you plug it in. did I forget something here?

Illaass, yes I have used this drive on MANY apple compuers from Imac, to mac pro's and my laptop at home. it has worked flawlessly on all of them. It is formatted to Mac. appears to be in working order, and works fine when I transfer it back to my laptop. "problem" laptop does not hold Photoshop, and I have work to do.
It appears to be spinning, and cable apears functional.
noyt sure about the last question though? I do not find the drive ANYWHERE on the new computer.

  • Can I drag and drop a copy of my iTunes library from a portable hard drive more than once?

Can I drag and drop a copy of my iTunes library from a portable hard drive more than once?  Not copy it, but actually drag and drop it into my music folder on my computer more than once if needed?

Nothing is going to stop you from dragging it in multiple times, but what exactly are you trying to do?  Are you trying to get iTunes to look through the folder and pick up newly added song files?

  • My computer that my iphone 4 is backed up on crashed... I bought a new computer as well as the iphone 5. How can transfer the my data/pics/notes/songs etc to my new phone?

Use the backup you have of the old computer and restore that data to the new computer. Also and backups that you have made of your iTunes library (it has a method to back it up as well) can be copied back over to the new computer. If you attempt to sync the phone to the new computer without the data, it will delete that data from the phone. The iPhone is not designed as a storage/backup device and as such will not sync music from itself to a new computer.
If by chance you had not been backing up the computer and/or iTunes, you can google for some third party software, such as Touchcopy that will do some of what you are asking.

I recently had to back up itunes play lists to external hard drive whilst computer was fixed. reinstalled itunes but dont know how to reinstall my music from external hard drive. help?

The same way the library was copied/moved to the external drive.
Copy it from location A to location B.
Then point iTunes to the correct library.

  • Do I need to back up itunes library to a portable hard drive?

I'm in my late 50's and I'm totally new to ipod & itunes. I have just purchased the ipod classic 160g mainly because I want to store all my CD collection & download all the new stuff too. Have loads of tunes in my library & have been given mixed messages about backing up. If iTunes is stored online is the sole purpose of backing up just incase laptop goes down? Also, can I access my iTunes account from another computer?

I would definitely back up your iTunes on a seperate hard drive, iTunes is only stored on line if you've either bought the music from iTunes or if you subscribe to iTunes Match. Even if you have iTunes match, it isn't designed to be a back up, besides, why trust a third party with your valuable music?
You can have your iTunes account on 5 seperate computers. I wouldn't try to download music to a different computer using your iPod though, it might work if you sign in to your account on the other computer first but it'd be better to transfer from a portable hard drive.

  • My Itunes is on an external hard drive, how do I access it on a new PC?

I have my iTunes library on an external hard drive. Very soon I will be getting a new computer, and I am wondering what steps are involved in accessing the library on the new computer.
After I download iTunes on the new computer, is it as easy as starting it and holding shift when I start it to specify the library on my external hard drive?
Or do I have to do something on my old computer first? Back it up or transfer it or something?
    Thanks.

+is it as easy as starting it and holding shift when I start it to specify the library on my external hard drive?+
Yes, if your itunes database file is already on the exHD, that's all you have to do, is a shift-start of itunes and choose the ITL file on the exHD.
I'd make sure both PCs are running the same version of itunes, though....just to make sure everything goes smoothly. If it was my PC, I'd also assign the same drive letter for the exHD.

  • Back up to portable hard drive rather than discs - how?

Can i back up my itunes to my portable hard drive rather than disc as 'help' suggests? How do i do it?

Like CTJon suggests, just use Windows Explorer to copy the iTunes folder and all its subfolders over to your portable drive.
You can't do it using iTunes. iTunes only has the disk backup option.
For incremental changes, you can use SyncToy from Microsoft. It's free software and really easy to use. There is no way to make it automatic, though, so you need to remind yourself to do the regular backups.

  • Can I put my iTunes Library on a portable hard drive?

    Inspiron 1100 Windows XP

I thnk this link from MacMuse may be just what you need. I ran iTunes off an EHD on my old PC due to lack of HD space & it worked great.

  • Backed library onto external hard drive, but after transfer, playlists, playcounts ect haven't saved?

On my old laptop I backed up my music on to an external hard drive ready to transfer over to my new laptop.
After copying the folder from my external to the new laptops' own drive, I duly followed instructions to restore the library.
I thought all was well and good but I noticed that it only copied the songs.. no song history or playlists. I added a new album to the library (an annoying experience after the new update in Feb) and noticed that when I went to sync my ipod (classic), all it did was charge my ipod.
So basically all my itunes is, is just a brand new library with my songs pasted in. Theres no history of song playcounts or playlists.
Needless to say im very irritated, as I have had no problems in the past and seem to have lost over EIGHT YEARS of history :/
The old laptop has been reformatted and wiped so I can't even go back and start again. Is there any way of moving my info from the ipod itself to the laptop?!! Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Ah sorted it. Basically I had renamed my iTunes folder in the hard drive, so when I transfered to My music there were two folders. I have since renamed and deleted the original iTunes folder and it works now. Thank you

  • Itunes backed up on external hard drive now corrupt

My 2000+ songs were backed up on an external hard drive. It suddenly gave me a corrupt error message. Ran the check disk. It advised me that I needed to /fix to correct problem, but it wouldn't accept that command. Went to Geek Squad & they tell me drive is empty, but for a fee they can send it off for more extensive recovery. For whatever reason, some of my iTunes files are also on my 13-year-old Windows drive, but not all. It's random music, too. Some recently purchased, some not. Trying to explain this to an Apple person has proven to be difficult. I had already tried all the "tricks" they have suggested.
Half of my library is "purchased" music, but trying to retrieve them from the iTunes Store is not happening. It still thinks they are downloaded. The songs that get the exclamation points then clear when I exit iTunes & then restart it. Then when I try to play them I get the exclamation point.
    Any other advice?
    Thanks!

I honestly thought they were backed up, along with a few hundred pictures. I actually went in and manually did a back-up a couple of months ago, because it didn't appear that it was following the schedule & auto-backing up. I'm just a 55 y/o, non-computer-literate mom, who now has adult children & am doing this computer thing on my own!! My computer is really old. Bought it when Windows ME came out!! HA! Saving for a new one, but our daughter's wedding this summer got in the way.
I thought about the delete-thing. Wasn't sure if that would work. Going to try (test) that now.
Thanks for your quick response & help.

  • New computer, itunes 7 trouble, music saved on dvd--how to get it to work?

I bought a new computer. On the prior computer had itunes 6. The music was saved on a data DVD, and it is also still on the ipod. New computer, installed itunes 7 and the same problems others had-- freezing and locking. Have yet to be able to put music on new computer.
Much time spent. Uninstalled itunes 7 and reinstalled 6. Still with freezing. Uninstalled 6 and quick time and prior to that delelted ith .itl file. reinstalled 6. Was able to load a music cd into the library,as a trial, and it loaded. HOwever, when I tried the data dvd to reinstall the library, froze again. Currently have unistalled itunes, QT, and cant find andy ipooder update. I have a new itunes folder with itunes music library, itunes library.itl and and itunes music file in it. Within this file was the trial music (and therefore is a back up).
    1) any ideas on what to do to get itunes 6 running (and right). No itunes 7 for me until all the other problems figured out.
    2) if no answer to 1), is there a way to comtact tech suport at apple to get help. I cant even find that.
    Thanks
Im running windows xp an a gateway with computer associates security.

Sounds like a part of a plan. However:
1.Should itunes work so I can use by CD/DVD
drive--and how should I set up my itunes 6 so that it
    does work.
    2. Along the same line, since I dont have any music
on my computer yet that I need to save or protect,
and considering all the hassles I (and everyone) has
had so far, any suggestions on what steps to take?
    Thanks
Dale I'm not sure I understand your questions. I'll respond with what I think you may be asking.
It should not make any difference if iTunes is installed and working in order to transfer files from your DVD to your hard drive.
First create a new folder on your main drive and give it a name. Then put your DVD in your drive. In My Computer right click on the drive your DVD is in and chose Open or Explore. You should now see all the files that are on your DVD. At the top of this window select Edit and in the drop down menu click Select. All the files will highlight. Select Edit again and click Copy this time.
Now go to the folder you created on your main drive. Right click on it and select Paste. All the files from your DVD should now transfer into the new folder you created. Depending on how many they are it may take a bit.
I don't know what format these files are in as you never made any mention of that. If they were iTunes protected format you won't be able to use them without iTunes. If they are MP3 you should be able to play them using any player that is installed on your system that plays MP3 format.
If these files were your entire iTunes Library before let me know.
Sorry it took so long to reply. I was in the mist of a reformat and was offline for a bit.
    Hope that helps.
