New computer need to transfer songs from ipod to library

My old computer crashed and it had all of my songs in its library. I have those songs on my ipod but now i am trying to put them on my new computer's itunes library. What can I do?

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
PodPlayer Windows Only
iGadget Windows Only
If your iPod is set to automatically update, when you connect you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual. Your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes after reinstalling your operating system.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • Computer crashed, have new one, need to transfer songs from ipod

My old computer completly crashed and it had all my itunes songs on it. I did not copy them to a CD or anything. I now can't turn the computer on or anything. I need to somehow transfer my songs from my ipod to the itunes on my new computer. The itunes on my new computer has nothing on it. When I plug my ipod into my computer, the ipod does not come up in itunes and itunes seems to freeze and doesn't work until i unplug the ipod. Yet the do not disconnect comes up on my ipod. I tried to use yamipod and sharepod but both of them could not find my ipod when it was plugged in, even when i had itunes up too. I have Windows Vista and the computer is a Dell Studio laptop. I do not know what to do, but I really need to get all my music on my computer. I have over 4,000 songs and can not afford to lose them. Please help!

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

Be careful when your iPod does connect, If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities for copying content from your iPod (such as YamiPod etc.) it needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone

External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • New computer won't take songs from ipod, how to register new computer?

My hard drive crashed, I had to buy a new one. All my songs were on my old drive. Except for what is in my ipod. I bought a new hard drive, but haven't had the $$ to have files removed from old drive yet. Installed itunes onto new drive, plugged in Ipod and it says it will either replace all 400 songs from my pod with the 1 song in my new itunes, or it can only take itunes purchased songs from my pod, which is only about 5% of my songs on my pod at the moment. How do I register my new pod to my new harddrive??? Help!

  • New computer, want to import songs from iPod

Can anyone help?? I recently got a new computer and I plan on giving my old one away but I need to get my music onto the new one!

  • New computer...transfering songs from ipod?

i just got a new computer and was wondering how to transfer my songs from my ipod to my itunes on my new computer. it seems like it should be simple but i cant figure it out! please help

Officially there is no way to transfer music from the iPod using itunes, but there are loopholes.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod to iTunes.
