New Computer, new file storage plan - How do I get iTunes to see files?

I've built a new computer, and decided to store my data files (including "My Music" and "iTunes" folders) to the D:\ drive instead of the C:\ drive as I did previously, reserving the C:\ drive for only operating system and program files. I've copied all my data files from my previous computer to my new D:\ drive; however, iTunes is still looking on the C:\ drive. I've configured Windows XP to put the "My Documents" folder on the D:\ drive rather than the C:\ drive. I have changed the location of my iTunes folder in Preferences to the new location. I also experimented with the iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl files by having WordPad find and replace every instance of "C:\" to "D:\". Didn't work. I have a personal folder/filename system and want to keep it. What's the easiest way to enable iTunes to "see" my music files (still in the same exact structure, only on the D:\ drive rather than the C:\ drive). My workaround was to copy all my files back to my C:\ drive, but that won't work for long since the C:\ drive is small (70 GB) and my digital music library is growing fast. I don't want to have to re-add everything from my D:\ drive to my Library since I have over 4,600 files as well as 41 different playlists, and it took me some time to make it that way. Don't want to have to re-do all that work (not even sure I could replicate it, actually). Thanks for any and all advice!

OK.
As indicated, one (or more) of the music files has too long of a name (or complete path/name combination) and iTunes is choking on it. Could also be an improper character in the name as well. If you can find and correct it (or remove it), you may be able to continue.
You may not be able to proceed with the 'standard' file migration for this reason and your 'custom' file/folder structure.
As you have the Library working on the C: drive, here's a way to save the Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attribute, then import them back into the Library when you Rebuild it on the D: drive.
You can keep the Ratings, Play Count, and Last Played attributes with Otto42’s SaveRatings tool:
http://ottodestruct.com/iTunes/SaveRatings.zip
See: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=428299&messageID=1275577 for directions (also below):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”
- Run the above 'Oto' process on the working C: drive Library
- File=>Export' all your Playlists to an XML file (one for each PL). We'll import them into the Library later to recreate the Playlists you have now.
- Move all the folders/files to the D: drive as you desire them
- Completely erase all the C: drive song References from iTunes
- 'File=>Add Folder' and add the D: drive songs into iTunes as References (make sure that the 'Copy files to Music folder' selection is unchecked
- Run the 'Otto' SaveRatings tool and bring in the ratings, etc. to the new Library
- 'File=>Import' into iTunes all the saved XML Playlist files into the new Library
That's about all you can do given the situation you have. It should recreate the Library fairly closely to what you had before.
Post back with any questions.

  • How do I get iTunes to see my music on a server

    Hi,
I have alot of music on a seperate server, how do I get iTunes to see this. I have tried adding it as a folder however when I shut the computer down and come back to it again it can't locate the music. Any ideas?

Apple provides repeat downloads as a convenience, not a substitute for your computers being the primary source of file transfers.  All your iTunes information such as playlists, ratings, etc. are in a file on your computer, not in the Apple Store.  Typically when you move computers you copy the whole iTunes folder and everything it contains to the new computer.  Moving media files can be done with a drive, or by Home Sharing.  You can also redownload media but let's say somebody desiced Apple may no longer sell a certain album; it cannot be downloaded again but if you already have it on a computer you can move your copy of the file.

  • I have a personal email calendar kept on Outlook, I also have an Exchange calender on outlook.  I want to sync both calendars with my Iphone 5 /6.1.2  but ITunes only sees the exchange calendar. How can I get Itunes to see both calendars

I have a personal email calendar kept on Outlook 2010, I also have an Exchange calender on Outlook.  I want to sync both calendars with my Iphone 5 / 6.1.2  but ITunes only sees the exchange calendar.
How can I get Itunes to see both calendars?

    Hi,
you don't need MobileMe or anything fancy. I personally sync my Outlook calendar and my Outlook address book with three computers (two at the office and one at home)and besides I run Office 2003 on one, Office 2007 on the other and Office 2010 on the third, so it can't get more complicated than that, but it works 100%.
First sync Outlook with iTunes on one computer, having done that when you try to sync it to another machine, iTunes will recognize that it is synced with another computer and ask you if you want to merge the data, say yes, That's all there is to it.
It does not work for music as you rightly say but as far as Calendars and Contacts are concerned it's flawless and transparent.
If you hit a snag talk back to me.
    Cheers.

  • I imported a cd that I purchased and I can't get it to sync to my phone. All the songs have a grey circle in front of them and the names of the songs are grey as well. How do I get iTunes to see them so they can sync to my iPhone?.

I've imported 3 cd's to my iTunes, but they continue to be "grey-ed out" with a dotted grey circle in front of them. The music will not sync to my iPhone. How do I get iTunes to recognize them so that they will sync?

    Thanks Chris CA.
In the Gen 4 they offer "Settings" then "Reset Settings"  Then it asks, "Do you want to reset your iPod?"  I click on "reset" but then nothing resets. :-(  This is what makes me think it might be locked or something....

  • How do I get iTunes to see my content from "iTunes media" ?

All my content is in iTunes media folder after transferring from another pc as I followed instructions how to transfer to another pc off this site, but iTunes is reading from a  from a previous library, as i was getting the cannot find or locate .itl so again i follwed instruction on here to get itunes to work (shift+open itunes then locate most recent itunes library) now opens but only some off my media. When I look in iTunes folder all my content is in iTunes media folder, how do I get iTunes  to read from media folder so I have all my music films podcasts etc? Or so it's all in the right place. The is in advance

i followed the instructions to manually manage songs and playlists.
Drag playlists from iTunes in the Source to the iPod.
If you want to delete a playlists from the iPod, in the Source in iTunes, click th eDisclosure triangle in front of the iPod name to display the playlists on the iPod.
You should edit the playlists in iTunes and then drag them to the iPod.
If you edit them only on the iPod in iTunes, and have to reload your iPod, the playlists will disappear.

  • I clicked and drug music into my itunes library folder inI clicked and drug music folders stead of adding it with itunes. how do i get itunes to see the new music?

I drug music folders into my itunes folder instead of useing the add folder feature in itunes. What do I do now to allow iTunes to see and play this new music? There is now about 40 gigs of music like this in a 140 gig library.

    NTG,
Dragging them into the iTunes folder does not add them to the library.  However, you can still add them to the library by finding the new location you dragged it to, and using the command File > Add folder to library.

  • We have one computer and two users. How do we get itunes to keep our apps separate for our iphones 3gs?

I'm new to iphones and Apple in general. I'm not tech savvy at all. My husband and I just got the iphone 3gs (separate phones). Itunes wants to put the same apps on both phones (one computer). Can we stop this? We don't want the same apps on our phones. Thanks.

Instead of syncing all apps just select the ones you want on your device. I am assuming your using the same apple ID. Just plug in phone select it from the left side of itunes then select the apps tab and uncheck the apps you dont want. Itunes will remember settings for each device.

  • How to i get itunes to see what songs are on my phone?

I deleted some of my songs off of my phone to make some memory room. I plug my phone into my computer to get the songs i deleted back on to my phone. When i try to sync it, itunes sees that all the songs i deleted are still on my phone. So itunes thinks all the songs in my library are still on there, so it wont add them onto my phone. What do i do?

Just hit the arrow to the left side of the ipods name then highlight "Music" "Podcast" ect ect

  • How do I get iTunes 11 to see ALL my music?

Upgraded to Windows 8 64 bit System. Only music purchased on itunes is added to library. All imported CDs and music purchased elsewhere does not show up in the library. There is no previous library file saved. How do I get iTunes to see ALL my music?
    APPLE... Please FIX this!

Do you have a working copy of the library anywhere? The key file is called iTunes Library.itl and normally exists inside <User's Music>\iTunes. This is the file that knows what is in your library and each of the playlists, and holds ratings, play counts etc. Changing the media folder path in preferences tells iTunes where you'd like it to store media in future. It doesn't magically connect iTunes to any media that might already be there, or fix links to media that has been moved, or make it pick up a non-existent library file. If the worst comes to it you will need to import the media into the new empty library.
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have any of these to recover ratings, play stats and playlists, and to associate your device with the new library.

  • How do i get itunes to recognize my external dvd ?

I have a 3yr old iMac and the internal SuperDrive has given up the ghost.  I just bought an external dvd burner/reader and connected via USB.  When I insert a CD I can see the drive and the .wav files in Finder, yet I can't access the music CD from iTunes.  How can I get iTunes to see the external optical drive so I can import cds into my library ?
The external dvd writer is a(supposedly) Mac compatible Samsung SE-208

    Hi,
It adds the files to my iTunes as WAV audio files, but takes forever to do so and also doesn't do any of the clever things (such as looking up the track names with Gracenotes) as when I used to just put the CD in the imac drive slot.
I tested this specific cd in my wifes mac laptop, and it just recognises it, identifies the album and track names and starts importing - so at least I know this is just a regular music cd.
If it's a true audio CD, then the files on the disk cannot be WAV. If they're WAV on the disk, it's not a standard audio CD. Standard audio disks are PCM which will appear as AIFF when viewed in Finder on a Mac. I'm a bit suspicious that there's something else amiss with your system, but right now I can't guess quite what. Perhaps someone else will have an idea.
