New computer-system wants to erase current songs

I have a new computer. When I go to sync new songs, it tells me that if I procede, it will erase all of my old songs already on the Ipod.I thought there was a way to back this up. If anyone knows, I would appreciate the answer. It has taken me over an hour just to get to this forum. No one at Apple to email of course. Right now I wish I had never loaded music on this piece of ****.

Hello DesertLady,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your iPod is still associating itself with your older iTunes library that is no longer available and I am assuming you have your iPod set up to sync automatically instead of manually. In order to get the iPod working with your new library, you will have to restore the iPod via iTunes.
[Restoring iPod to factory settings|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339]
However, if the music on your iPod is not in your new iTunes library, there are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and into your new iTunes library.
The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • I found an old iPod classic of mine.  It's not synced to my new MacBook Pro.  How can I get the music and photos off of it and on to my new computer?  When I plug it in to my new computer it wants to erase what is on it and transfer from my new computer.

I found an old iPod classic of mine that is synced to a computer that is long gone.  I want to get the music and photos from this old iPod onto my new computer.  Every time I hook the iPod up to my new computer it wants to delete what is on the iPod and replace with the contents of the iTunes that is currently on the new computer.  I don't want to do that.  I want to keep what is on the old iPod and transfer it to iTunes.  Any help?  Thanks!

Syncing shouldn't trouch you photos unless you have photos in a Photo Library album.  These would be photos that were synced to your phone from your computer.  If you do have any, you'll need to use an app like PhotoSync to transfer them to your computer prior to syncing.
If you prefer to backup your camera roll photos prior to syncing, open iTunes and go to Preferences>Devices and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".  Then connect your phone to your computer and import them as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Then, to minimize data loss, follow the steps in this user tip: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.  To follow the steps, first open iTunes and go to View>Show Sidebar.  Also, Transfer Purchases is now located in File>Devices.

  • Ok...i just baught a new ipod touch and synched it to my old computer to get my music off it...but when i synched it to my new comp it wants to erase everything thats not baught from i tunes....how do i keep the music in order to sync to my new comp?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I just got a new computer and want to import my music from my ipod classic and keep my current play lists. How do I do this?

You can go to the pictures folder on your old computer and copy the "iPhoto library" file and copy it to a thumb drive or something like that and then just open it on your new Mac.

  • I have a new computer and my nano erased my library from it.  How do i get the songs onto my nano?  It will sync the new purchases but not the original music

My nano original music was erased from my nano.  How do i download the music again?

if you had non-purchased music on your ipod nano and synced with a new computer it does an erase and sync as it can only be synced to one library at a time - if you have not yet done the erase and sync then you can google some kind of ipod extractor software to see if you can get the non-purchased music off the device - back to the computer - and back into itunes - good luck

  • Bought New Computer - Don't Care About Taking Songs

I bought a new computer and would like the new one to be the host for itunes and software for my IPOD. I have all songs backed up on an external hard drive, approximately 30 gigs or so keeping existing songs or transfering as they are is not the issue. How do I tranfer my ipod to a new computer and reinstall all my songs on the ipod through the new computer? Is there a way to format my Ipod and wipe clean and just do a new install?

*Is there a way to format my Ipod and wipe clean and just do a new install?*
Yes there is, you can restore your iPod on the new computer. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

Make a smart playlist of your whole library but only checked songs - #4 on  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1801
Highlight all files in that playlist, then drag to the other drive.  This isn't preserving any playlists or whatever, just copying files from one drive to another.
You might want to delete the smart playlist this once you are done because it will probably gobble up resources with that many files.

If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

  • New computer system, printed colours are wrong, please advise.

I recently bought a new computer system inc Dell U2711 monitor and purchased LR4 and CS6. All was well, or so I thought, until I got some prints done. The prints from my old system (with which I only used elements 10) look fine. Those from my new system look awful, the colours are just wrong. My workflow is RAW image opened in LR then finished off in CS6 before saving as JPEG. The saved images look alright but when I either click view/ proof colors or if I use an image as a desktop screensaver, it gives the same washed out appearance with wrong colours. I'm at the limit of my technical knowledge here, does anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks for that link, I will read that. I've been going through the settings on LR and CS and I think I begin to understand. I've been looking in LR preferences and that gives three options for color space: There is Prophoto RGB (the default which LR recommends as it says the other two don't give the full colour range available in LR) then there is sRGB and lastly Adobe RGB (1998). There is no such option that I can find in CS6 preferences but, when I export a TIFF file from LR4 into CS6 and then save it from CS6 it shows the color as ICC profile Adobe RGB (1998). I also notice that in this setting using the view/ proof in CS6 the colours are slightly askew (they were way off when I had the LR preference set to ProphotoRGB). If however I set the LR preference to sRGB and then export to CS6, using the view/proof the colours stay the same so I'm still a bit confused. Maybe I'm just thick, it's a lot to take in.
I've processed a RAW image in the recommended ProphotoRGB, exported it to CS6 then before saving gone into edit/ convert to profile/ sRGB: the colours have stayed the same and using the view/ proof or save as desktop background = no change and everything looks good. So, is this the way forward and should that format work when printed? (I've only got a crappy basic two ink printer which I wouldn't trust to print anything other than text). Also, is it possible to get CS6 to save as sRGB by default or do I have to go through this routine for every image I want to save and print?
