New computer, transferring files, G4  10.4.11 to imac Snow Leopard, 10.6

Hi,
I have a new computer and need to transfer files. The old one is an imac Power PC G4 1 Ghz running 10.4.11 to a new imac 3.06Ghz Intel i3 running Snow Leopard, 10.6.
Which cable do I need, the 400 to 800 FW?
I understand I get only one shot to run Setup Assistant. Do I load iWork and the new version of Office onto the new computer FIRST or AFTER I run Setup Assistant?
My printer will no longer work ( Epson RX 580, not supported ) and programs like Quickbooks Pro Version V9.0.6 R7, and Quicken might need upgraded. Should I contact these companies first to see if they are still capable of running on 10.6? If I need new software, should they be loaded on the new computer BEFORE transferring files?
Can I back up Home Folder, Documents, iTunes, iPhoto etc to my external HD, then disconnect the HD before the transfer? Exactly which files need backed up externally?
Its been 7 years since I switched to a new computer and am rusty, plus everything has changed. Hope these questions make sense.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure that I can answer all the questions...
If your old computer has FW 400, then you need a FW 400 -> 800 cable or a FW 800 -> 800 cable with a 400 -> 800 adapter. They're available in Mac stores or online.
If you have already gone through the setup on your new Mac, Setup Assistant will no longer be available - that is only available during the initial setup. What is now available is called Migration Assistant (Applications -> Utilities); the difference between the two is that the Setup Asst. will initially create one account - if you wait and use the Migration Asst, you have already created an account, so there could potentially be some problems. I used it and it took me quite a while to get rid of duplicate folders, permissions problems, etc.
Also, since you're moving from a PowerPC to an Intel, there will be certain apps that may or may not work with the new OS - have you checked all your third party apps to make sure they will work not only with an Intel, but, more importantly, with Snow Leopard? If they will work with SL, you may still need to install Rosetta (you will automatically be prompted and it should then download and install) - that little app will allow you to run the PowerPC apps.
And yes, you should make a complete backup before attempting to transfer - just in case. You could, if necessary, just drag 'n drop some of your own files/folders. I would also do the transfer first and then update individual apps.
Here are a couple of threads/articles to help clarify:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12146345
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070117075034219
Because I've read that Migration Asst isn't the best way to transfer from PowerPC to Intel, I'd say either start over with your new machine (reinstall and use Setup Asst when prompted) or, if possible, use the drag 'n drop method which might be safer.
Can't address the Office or Quickbooks questions because I have neither.

transfered Itunes library via clickfree backup. New computer Tech support(Premier PC) did this, Now can not play library within Itunes. Message says "The song " song name " could not be found. Would you like to locate it? Same Tech tried different things via on line support could not fix and said call itunes support and say Itunes will not play on new computer.

I was given the option to locate the file where the song is held. If so select "locate" and direct it to the folder / file where the song is and open it. itunes then will give you the option to use this process to update all of your library. OK that as this will do it automatically instead of doing them one by one. I hope this helps.

I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

need to boot a new macbook pro (yosemite 10.10) with an external drive (snow leopard 10.6.8). Toshiba canvio 1TB, USB 3.0. Have formatted it for mac already. Actually works when chosen as the "boot drive" on my 2009? macpro desktop with snow leopard 10.6.8. OS. I still need to work from FCP 7.0.3 as we have many projects from the past that must be "re-edited" from time to time. The macbook pro sees the drive from the systems preferences as a "boot drive" but nothing happens when it is selected. Have also tried from start up, holding option key until drives appear for boot. Will only go as far as the grey screen with apple logo when selecting external drive.

    Try using a virtual machine.

Hello, I have macbook pro, late 2008, OS X 10.5.8 and I want to upgrade to new soft, which one is the proper one for me Snow leopard or Mountain Lion, and what is the differences between those.
What do you recommend at this time for me.
    Thanks a lot

You can upgrade to Mountain Lion, but you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade. After upgrading, open Apple menu > Software Update and install the most recent version. Mac OS X 10.6.8 includes the App Store, so open it and purchase Mountain Lion. See if your programmes are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • **Transferring project to new computer - EMPTY FILE FOLDERS??

I had a previous post on render issues...the render was coming out   very glitchy and fuzzy and like nothing I've experienced before...
So what I'm doing now is taking my CS4 project and transferring to a much better computer...that has CS5 Premiere Pro.
The project opens up fine but when it asks for the files - and I locate them on external hard drives...the folders are empty.
The files of these folders are absolutely fine and present when I open them from the hard drive on the computer.
I   also transferred the files from the hard drive to the desktop of the   new computer and the files are present when I open from desktop.
The only issue is when I'm in CS5...it's saying the folders are empty but they're definitely not.
This   doesn't occur for all the files...I grabbed some images (still images)   without a hitch...but the video's aren't pulling up and the voice  over,  music and sound FX aren't either...
So basically the only thing that works are the images.
I think I've experienced something like this in the past but I don't remember how I fixed it.
What's this all about and how do I correct it immediately.
The quicker the input the better....so I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could get back super quick!
Thanks - I really appreciate the help

David - wanted to let you know that your suggestion worked...well kind of
I found out that the issues were mainly with my computer - regarding the original post about intermittant fuzziness.
About the files not importing/folders showing up but not the files...
I opened an original  project. When I did that, the files within the folders magically...were  present.
    But it wasn't that easy.
I  had to get the original project into the newly created project so  the  easiest way that worked was copying and pasting the original  project  into the new project timeline.
But then, the files didn't show up again after I did this...
So  I forget what I did because I went through a ton of attempts but  I  finally got the files to show up and I linked each piece of media  with  the timeline elements.
All but one of the media elements linked.
It gave me an error message for the one that didn't:
The  selected file does not contain video media used by clip references in  one or more sequences. These video clip references will be deleted, and  cannot be undone. Do you want to continue?
That was an AVI video that didn't import but the rest of the AVI's with the exact same settings did import.
And the  computer I was on didn't play AVI video's (only the audio) -  which is what about 3 of the video elements in the timeline were  composed of. I donwloaded  codec's from DivX and I think Microsoft  codecs and maybe one more set of  codecs that all were supposed to have  AVI within them but the computer  still only played the audio.
So I rendered that portion (video file that didn't  import) on old  computer at super high data rate to combat the fuzziness  and brought  that video into the timeline and went on with the rest.
So I don't know what was up but I kept going til I found a way.
Thanks for your help David and everyone else

  • Bought new computer, transferred iTunes but lost all playlists

I recently "upgraded" from an HP desktop with Windows XP to a Dell Studio XPS with Windows vista. I saved iTunes to an external hard drive from my old computer and then tried to transfer to my new computer. Ended up having to re-download iTunes and then it found all of my transferred music files, but I lost all of the playlists that I worked so hard to build. They are still on the old computer. Is there a way to transfer them? If I sync my iPod with the old computer, will it restore the playlists or delete them from the old iTunes? Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you copy all your data from the old computer to the new computer?
For iTunes, copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ folder on new computer.
That is all you need to do (for iTunes).

  • New computer, transferred old iTunes library, now cannot edit track info?

On my old laptop (Vista) I ran my iTunes library from an external hard drive. I have now got a new laptop (Windows 7) and transferred the iTunes library information to the new computer. The media files are still stored on the external hard drive, but I am unable to edit any track information; it is all greyed out.
I have changed folder permissions and administrator settings and ensured the files aren't read-only but still can't find a solution. Anyone know what I'm missing?

Did you grant yourself and system full control of the media folder and all files & subfolders? See this post...

  • New Computer, transfering ipod library

I recently purchased a new computer and put my old one in a different room. The different room has no internet access, but i can still see my old itunes library. I just downloaded itunes on my new computer, and I purchased new songs that I want to add to my shuffle. However, it keeps asking me if I want to Delete all old songs and add the new. No I want them in addition to the new!
I know that I can set it to manual mode, but since I have no internet access in the different room, and it's an older version I can't find that option.
    please help

I had the same problem. I was given a shuffle as a gift. A bunch of music was already loaded on it. However, when I went to transfer these songs to my iTunes library, I could not do it. The only option was to wipe out all that good music.
What I have learned is that Apple intends the shuffle to work on only one computer. However, I found a workaround. Try this, and hopefully it will work for you...
    1. Make sure iTunes is not open.
    2. Plug your shuffle in.
    3. You should see a Windows Explorer screen that shows the iPod and its folders and files.
    4. Go to the menu bar and click on "Tools."
    5. Then click on "Folder options..."
    6. Select the "View" tab.
    7. Now go into the "Advanced Settings" window and find the item "Hidden Files and Folders."
    8. Click on the button for "Show Hidden Files and Folders."
    9. Click on the "OK" button.
    10. Now there will be a hidden folder that shows up called "iPod_Control." You can tell it's a hidden folder because the folder icon is less pronounced than for a normal folder.
    11. Right-click this folder and select "Open."
    12. Now you will see two sub-folders "iTunes" and "Music."
    13. Right-click on the "Music" folder and select "Open."
    14. Now you will see several sub-folders, named "F00" and "F01" and "F02" and perhaps more. On my 512 shuffle there are only these 3 folders, but maybe yours will have more.
    15. Right-click on these folders and select "Open" and you will see your music files. You'll notice that Apple has re-named the files with 4 letters. Just ignore that.
    16. Now, to get them from the shuffle to your pc, start by clicking "Folders" view in the open Windows Explorer window (where your shuffle music files are shown).
    17. Create a new folder in your C: drive. Call it "My M4A Files" or "My MP3 Files" or "whatever you want to call it."
    18. Now copy all the files from your F00 folder on your iPod to this new folder on your C: drive. Do this by selecting all files, then moving them with your mouse while holding down your "Control" key.
    19. Copy all the other files from the remaining folders (F01, F02, etc) over into this new folder on your C: drive.
    20. At this point you should have all the iPod music files on your C: drive.
    21. Now remove your shuffle from your pc.
    22. Open up iTunes.
    23. Click on "File" and then "Add Folder to Library..."
    24. Find your folder (the new one on your C: drive) and press the "OK" button.
    25. Your files should now be transferred to your iTunes library.
    26. Once you verify that all your songs are there in the iTunes library, you can safely erase them from your shuffle. (As you know, iTunes will not work properly until you erase all those files that were on there from the "other" computer.)
Try this and tell us if it works for you!

  • Question re: moving iTunes library to new computer where files have different file path?

    Hi everyone-
I just got a new laptop and need to transfer my iTunes library to the new computer.
On my old computer, the hard drive was partitioned into a "C" drive and an "F" drive. The new laptop is just "C."
Since my iTunes library was on the "F" partition on the old laptop, the file path for all the files is going to change when I transfer to the new laptop.
I can find dozens and dozens of articles online about how to move iTunes to a new computer, but none of them seem to address the file path issue.
Does anyone know where I can find detailed instructions on how to make this work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Quit iTunes.
Move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the F: drive.
    Hold Shift & launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you moved to the F: drive.
    Everything should still work fine.
Now go to iTunes prefs > Advanced.
Set the iTunes media folder location to the iTunes folder you just moved to the F: drive.
iTunes menu File > Library > Consolidate library.
This will copy all your media into the iTunes folder (F:\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder)
    Let it finsh.
    Quit iTunes.
Then you can copy the F:\iTunes\ folder to the new computer.
If you copy it to /Music/ folder, just start iTunes and it'll work.
If you copy it elswhere (such as another drive) hold Shift, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder.
